The Strange Aeons Adventure Path begins with "In Search of Sanity," a mind-shattering foray into horror where the heroes awaken within the walls of the eerie Briarstone Asylum, their minds wracked and memories missing. Working together to recover their missing time, they soon learn that their amnesia is but a symptom of a much greater cosmic menace. As they struggle to retain their sanity, the heroes must ally with other asylum residents and fight against the monstrosities that have taken over the building and plunged it into nightmare. Can the adventurers defeat the terror that stalks the halls and free themselves from their prison of madness?

This part of the Adventure Path sets the perfect start for a Lovecraftian horror setting. It is very clear cut who is good and who is evil, making the Players believe it is always very clear, which is where we want them, so we can surprise them later!
It is one big dungeon crawl, which can be a bit tedious, but otherwise an amazing adventure and a great start. Not too much prep-work needed, so you are able to focus on stuff like soundscape, handouts etc.
I am a "true fantasy monster fan", doesn't mean I am a "true horror fan". Besides there are plenty of movies that use elements and even creatures from his books.
So I'm curious.....is there any point in generating a "back story" for characters in this AP ? Or is it going to be assigned in some fashion....for example based on the AP trait you choose for the character ?

There will be a point, yes... it's something we're still working on and which will be covered extensively in the Player's Guide, which should be out around the time Gen Con starts.

I'm really excited to hear more about this. Without tipping your hand, are the PCs likely to have all been in a similar place prior to waking up in the asylum, or is it more diverse than that? How do the campaign traits tie in?

I can't say more WITHOUT tipping the hand, and since it's still stuff we're working on the fine details of... just know that we'll figure it out and have rules and advice and all that for it, but at this point we can't tell you more because we don't know 100% how it's going to work ourselves.
I appreciate the excitement and anticipation, but it's not something I can address now. Ask again in the week before Gen Con! ;-)
I wish this was the AP that was releasing now instead of Hell's Vengeance.
I wish that what ever AP comes after this one was released instead of this one. But no one will like everything published.
I am sure this will be well done but it is not something I will GM as horror does not fit my gm'ing style and I remain uncertain of the suitability of Pathfinder as a medium for a horror game, I may not buy it but if I don't at least one reason will be that it is something someone else in my gaming group could run much better than me.

Well I hope this means we'll be paying Ustaluv another visit soon in PFS...
I also wonder if while this is going on there is another adventure path where the players are furthering the dark goals of strange beings from beyond the stars...

There WILL be a couple of NPCs from Lovecraft's writings who have roles to play in this AP... but I'm not gonna say who they are, now that I've already said that Herbert West isn't in the adventure (of course, the timing doesn't work out for him, since he's met his fate years before the events of Strange Aeons...).
You'll find out soon enough!
Didn't West come back as a disguised alien in Through The Gates of the Silver Key, though? Or do we, like Lovecraft himself, not talk about that one? ^_^
I hope this AP is a real character grind. I have played the Call of Cthulhu RP game, and you literally lose characters on a weekly basis to horrific demises or you go insane. I'd hope that the characters that most players start with are not the ones that they end up finishing the campaign with...

I'd say that'd be very antithetical to Paizo's design philosophy.

Looking forward this. I hope that later in the AP any sanity mechanic will have Will saves appropiate to the level of the characters. That was kind of a problem in Wake of the Watcher, where the Will saves seemed way to low for the character level and I had to raise them substantially to even threaten the player characters with some sanity issues.
Wait, what? How have I not heard about this Kickstarter before? Dude. O_o
I'm still curious about who the other two Iconics will be for this AP. Feiya is our Arcane, and Erasmus is I guess our de facto Skill Monkey (the adaptability from his choice of spirits), so we need Divine and Warrior. Who hasn't seen action lately?

A "Sanity mechanic" is not really appropriate to Pathfinder and won't be part of the Adventure Path. Insanity will be handled as part of the story and as GameMastery Guide's rules as afflictions.

Or that. Although apparently it was appropiate to Wake of the Watcher, as layed out in the side bar of that volume of Carrion Crown on page 29.
Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu game uses a Sanity mechanic to track madness, and if you’d like to replicate this experience during this adventure, you may use the following as optional rules.
Also, as James has said before, they are allowed to change their minds between past and future products.
And those optional rules use the Gamemastery Guide, as James just said.

In fact, feed back and how it worked out in Wake of the Watcher is what helped me decide it wasn't appropriate. AKA: Think of the inclusion of a sanity mechanic in that volume as an experiment, and the results of that experiment are that sanity mechanics don't work well for Pathfinder/fantasy games.
Announced for August—do you know where your Sanity score is at? Product image and description are not final.
That guy with his hooked serrated sickle thing reminds me of someone... Hmmmmmm.... Looks almost like a question mark. And his robes are yellow! HMMMMMM! Who could that be?
