Chapter 6: "Sound of a Thousand Screams"
by Richard Pett

With the dangers of the Stolen Lands brought to heel, the PCs rule as lords of that realm. But from an unassuming corner of their kingdom, a centuries-old plot takes shape, turning the land itself into a deadly enemy that threatens to bring their entire nation to ruin. As the boundary between the Stolen Lands and an insane other world begins to break down, it’s up to the PCs to save their people from nature gone mad and the emissaries of a reality beyond imagining. But can they retain their kingdom—and their sanity—against the fury of the First World?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path brings the Kingmaker Adventure Path to its dynamic conclusion and includes:
  • “Sound of a Thousand Screams,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 15th-level characters, by Richard Pett.
  • Nefarious plots and high-level challenges to keep your Kingmaker campaign running after the Adventure Path’s end, by F. Wesley Schneider.
  • An exploration into the First World, home of the fey and land of impossibilities, by James L. Sutter.
  • Battlefield revelations and unfortunate truths for would-be Pathfinder Ollix Kaddar in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Jay Thompson.
  • Five new monsters, by Gareth Hanrahan and Patrick Renie.

Pathfinder Adventure Path is Paizo Publishing's monthly 96-page, perfect-bound, full-color softcover book printed on high-quality paper. It contains an in-depth Adventure Path scenario, stats for about a half-dozen new monsters, and several support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the standard 3.5 fantasy RPG rules set.

Excellent ideas, lacking in execution

3/5

I ran a few encounters and used the maps from the final chapter of this adventure as a single-session finale to my Kingmaker campaign for my group of 5 players (4 experienced, 1 novice). We chose to condense the adventure substantially because they were tired with high-level Pathfinder play.

The adventure absolutely oozes with flavor. The NPCs were so cool I really wished I had the time to introduce the PCs to more of them. The final adventure really does tie in to the rest of the campaign well, as long as it is properly foreshadowed. The final encounter really felt climactic.

Unfortunately, the adventure is definitely lacking in parts. Many of the encounters with lovingly-detailed backstories boil down to either a single mid- to high-level opponent (who has little chance due to the action economy) or a large number of lower level opponents (who have no chance due to the disparity in AC / attack). Several wilderness encounters are missing maps entirely. For the indoor encounters the grid on the maps is also hard to see in several places, which made copying and using the maps difficult.

The back matter is good, but nothing to write home about. The ideas for continuing the campaign were interesting but Kingmaker is so open-ended that they may not fit with your campaign. The monsters are not particularly inspiring and only 1 or 2 tie in to the adventure directly.

YES!

4/5

What an awsome final chapter to the epic saga that is Kingmaker! I would have given it 5 stars but the final boss always felt a little "tacked on" and I feel the overall story would have been better had the king of Pitax been the BBEG at the end, but still WHAT A STORY!

Kingmaker Reaches a Crescendo!

4/5

A unique dungeon, unlike any I have seen since Advanced's "Land Beyond the Mirror." Still, one quibble; it didn't seem to fit the rest of the other five. It felt a bit like making an Owlbear with taxidermy...outside of that, it was brilliant. Check my full review: Sound of a Thousand Screams

It's a pre-authorization - it doesn't actually bill your account, it just pops up to let you know that this and that amount of $ is going to vanish next week when Paizo ships the stuff.

If your card is linked to a bank account, banks will often put on a hold on your account. The hold usually goes away after a few days, but it is a little annoying if you aren't prepared for it. I have mine linked to an actual credit card, they handle it a little nicer.

Expect to get access to your PDF sometime next week. The shipping schedule is a little odd this time because of Gen Con.

Yar... my bank has had a 'hold' on the money for three days now.

So we'll finally get the straight dope on the Golarion fey in this book? 'Bout time, given all the horrid and stomach-churning hints we've been getting ever since 'Bloodsworn Vale' and 'Carnival of Fear'. Yay for Paizo, for finally giving RPG fantasy fey the brutally evil nature they so long deserved!
Calling all fey "Brutally evil" is like calling all humans "warmongering savages." There are certainly SOME fey that are evil, but not all of them. Not even all of the First World fey are evil; there's some that are good, and most of them are neutral.

Well, it's a nice shift from the Disney-esque fey that always seem to show up in popular entertainment.

The Kingmaker's are going to the fey home-world!?

*is terrified*

What is that dragon on the cover about to get it's back-scales handed to it by Valeros? It looks like a mix of the 3.5 Blue and Black dragons... and it's still not as scary(to me anyway) as home-world fey!

Well, actually from everything that been described around here, it sounds like the First World is coming to them... which is probably worse

Spoiler:
The black dragon is Ilthuliak, the little pet of the fey-queen Nyrissa. The dragon has her lair in the First World. So I think the PCs face her there - and also Nyrissa. Scary.

A quick note about art:

We DO provide our artists with references to base their work on, but at the same time... they're artists. They sometimes do their own things. If they go TOO far off what we order for art, we have to choose to either tell them to fix it or we decide to go with what they did because it turned out cool anyway.

True! In human terms she would have a Charisma of 3 or less.

Ah, but Charisma and appearance are two different things in D&D. Gorgeous people can still be shallow bores, and even the homeliest folks can be beloved leaders.

The very definition of charismatic :)

The homliest folk can become the leader everyone need too. :)

The chick on the cover looks like a mix between a plant, a peacock, a human, and that one chick in Frankenstein with the weird stand-up-ish hair. It's like she put in too much plant-mousse. :P

She does look decent though, although the beauty part is gone as soon as you get to the hair.

To slightly misquote Sir Terry Pratchett...

Fey are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Fey are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Fey are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Fey are glamorous. They project glamour.
Fey are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Fey are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said Fey are nice.

Got my ship notice! Looking at the PDF now :)

Still no #36 for me... :'(
I hope it'll ship soon!
Cheers guys, I know you're busier than usual!

Wow, looks like a very nice adventure.

And the artwork on page 31 is beautiful.

I wonder who wrote this fine offering ?

Oh, Richard Pett.

Wait.

Pett ?

Pett.

Pett.

*Today in the morning, the police in Poznan found a dead body in the house of a 29-years old PhD candidate. A source told us that the young man had his face frozen in an unspoken horror, and the walls of his room were covered in thousands of carvings of a mysterious word: PETT."

Hey Paizo, it would be realy nice if you would setup a free PDF download of the new Mass Combat Rules found in the Kingmaker part 5. That way, my players can have a copy on hand too, who will need to know how they work as well as the GM.

Anybody else feel the same way?

Jim

Supposedly it shipped on Thursday July 29th, got billed a week prior to that. Today on day 10 I'm still waiting. Couldn't use it on my gaming Friday so I had to substitute Castle Ravenloft, and promise my rabid gamers that if the evil nymph uses the "see her naked save or die" trick from the old school write up I'll bring a dozen chocolate donuts next time we play.

Since I don't do the PDF thing has anyone else gotten their hardcopy of this delivered yet?

I emailed customer service but as this is the weekend i figured I might get a faster response from here.

You could just print or copy/paste the necessary parts though.

That's what I did with the Kingdom building rules.

(I guess this post should go in the War of the River Kings thread though.)

Did anyone else get some amusement from the picture of Queen Amiri on page 56, keeping her harem boy shackled to the throne?

I just saw what the Zomok was, and that's a really awesome monster.
