Can you determine the random location before deciding to use the book?

I'm leaning towards no but it's not clear to me why either way.

I would say no.

This falls into the Choices Matter section on page 29 of the [Mummy's Mask] rulebook. It also follows this FAQ entry - the response (but not the resolution) says that "[you] have to make the choice and live with the results." You choose to either ignore the effect that would move you to a random location [before determining a random location] or you move to a random location. Granted, the FAQ entry is about closing locations, but I think that the intent applies any time you have a choice.

Just my guess.

Yep no... you have to use it before you Are moved. IMHO.

Brother Tyler is totally right. Mike clearly explained many times that when you have to make a decision, and that depending of the decision you'll make you will or not have a random outcome happening (roll a dice, reveal a card...), you must take the decision to act a certain way before knowing what the random outcome will be.
Actually, if you decide to not discard a card for the Fasciculus you will NEVER know where you would have landed.

While I agree on the Fasciculus , the above seems to not always be true (and does not follow from any explicit rule, I think?)

Aa example would be (iirc) Corruption Demon (with Curse-like display power), where you roll 1d4 *first* and *then* decide if you want to bury that many cards (though I believe it was FAQd to be more explicit in that regard, but I be damned if I can find the FAQs with the new site layout...)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

From any page (I think) click "Help" in the upper right, near the cart symbol. Then, on the page that loads, look for the appropriate FAQ in the menu on the right.

Here is the corruption demon FAQ.

I think the fact that Corruption Demon was considered to need a FAQ to work that way makes it even more evidence if anything that you normally have to choose first (though I guess it could just need a FAQ for being ambiguous).

Was hoping there was something a bit more explicit, but I agree the general principle seems to be to choose first wherever appropriate. Plus I suppose one could argue it's no longer a "random location" once you've determined which one it is :)

Exactly my point:
- If a card tells you explicitly in which order you have to do things, then it's obvious you have to do it that way (e. g. the FAQed Corruption Demon).
- If it doesn't and offers a choice between action A and action B and the result of A and/or B depends on some roll/draw..., then you need to decide between A or B before you roll/draw.

Think about that example:
At the start of your turn, reveal a card to examine the top card of your location and you may banish it if it's a boon, or discard a card to examine the top card of another location and you may banish it if it's a boon.

Would you say you have the right to both examine the top card of your location and another one before deciding which one you banish? I guess you'll agree that it is certainly not the case.

Other example, say a character has this power:
For your combat check, roll your Divine +1d8 or your Arcane +1d10. Would you allow me to roll both and take the result I prefer?

If you go this way, If a Monster has "check to defeat Combat 10 or Divine 6", I should be able to roll both my Melee and Divine skills and take one of the results.

Or maybe I could roll the whole combat check to see if I would win it before deciding to evade?

I know it's not exactly the same but my point is that the whole rules are written as "Unless told otherwise, chose action first, compute results after". IMHO

Not mentioning that thematically it makes no sense (if we know before attempting the jump if I will or not make it to the other side, you can just delete any random part of that game... I mean you should even get rid of everything that even remotely look like a playing card :-))
