Well I'm still ecstatic that the game with all these characters and chemistry actually got revived from the grave! I'm still not exactly sure how that happened, but it was a wonderfully pleasant surprise to me, and one I want to commit to and protect.

I can understand frustration and inconsistency with posting. It positively killed a powerfully strong and meaningful Kingmaker game I was in (my first PbP experience). Of course in that game the inconsistencies and drops in posting rate were measured in weeks and not days, so I know that's not the exactly the same scope of issue.

Actually, I could never commit to meeting a daily posting frequency all the time myself, except in short bursts to keep up combat or keep a player dialogue going. I know I never would have joined this game originally if a once/multiple posts-per-day frequency was required. I've seen some games that go super-fast and have depth, though mostly I've seen shallow gameplay with bad writing and zero character development with those types of frequencies. Maybe to be good and fast it just takes a job type that I simply do not have.

None of that really addresses Giuseppe's need here - and not fully certain if the desire is more consistency rather than frequency - but just putting my own PbP style cards on the table as it were. The good news is that from what I've seen, the players are as interested in posting interactions with each other as well as with NPC's, so it allows for more posts. That issue where the players only really want to interact with the DM is something I'm wrestling with in my own Zeitgeist game.

Hehe it's funny you mentioned it, as I've run the near-entirety of it in my monthly tabletop group game for the past seven sessions or so...should be wrapping it up by February. It's been a great module to DM, but I miscalculated and thought it would only take 3-4 sessions to run, not 8!

I apologize if I misread your posts and took your watch. It would appear the conversation was always meant for you as well. Just ignore Hama's reply to Beorn I guess.

Nah! Totally fine Ravingdork, totally fine. I mean that's just what happens when we do these scenes and some players take the scene in a different direction is all - that's part of the fun to take what's written and then play off of that in a way that keeps the story flowing and makes sense, preferably in a way that adds to what came before it. Sometimes its just a bit chaotic and messy to figure out, but that's part of the fun.

So for talking to Beorn I just "assumed" there was some time in there somewhere after getting to Oleg's and before Hama's first watch that we would have that little chat. Nothing major, so I flex-tagged it (that's what I call it but referencing the time and place and who involved so it's not jarring to read with other things going on in the scene), and I think that works pretty well.

Generally speaking I'll always try to stay in the current timeframe and scene with Kas, and use flex-tags to go 'back in time' if I really have to for something interactive.

By the way, very SUPER-CREEPY-COOL post w/ Hama and her watch! Wow! I mean Kas would despise that obviously, but the way you wrote it means to me that it happened and everyone else was either asleep or elsewhere doing tasks. Hehe, Hama's got a lot of issues, but lack-of-creativity isn't one of them!

Howdy All!

I'm Vorduvai and GM Wicked asked me to go ahead and pop in here and say hello. Just a quick PbP background on myself: I started playing PbP back in 2011 in a long-running Kingmaker game (taking over an existing PC when the player went missing) with a lot of rich story and in-depth narrative elements to it. I've attempted to join only a few games since then, and regrettably two that I've joined had GM's who went AWOL...but one of them was with Something Wicked as a fellow player, and I've always kept tabs on reading the CotCT game that GM Wicked was running. My main activity on the PbP front has been GM'ing a Zeitgeist: Gears of Revolution game since late 2014.

Anyway, I've been wrangling over a Hunter (divine hunter archetype) concept since yesterday, thinking that might be a good support melee fighter + utility person to augment what you're all putting forward. Basic concept is as an athletically handsome but not-too-bright follower of Kurgess who's come down south over the years in a mixture of daring exploration, friendly competition and getting into trouble, being in Hyrantam for only a few months or so. He's been a sailor deckhand (profession: sailor), small boat guide (rowboat included!), hunter of creatures, occasional mercenary scout (survival/tracking) and other odd-job type - whatever allows him to journey and see new sights, that sort of thing. I see him as a bit of a bravado but only where it adds some humor to the game - he's just not as smart or charismatic as he thinks he is to pull it off, and is more happy-go-lucky like a Caydenite might be. I see him living currently to start in his rowboat tied up somewhere, complete with tent and odd bits of waterproofed tarps, where he can feed his animal "friend" and such.

I'll get a profile here going today for him...mechanics-wise he's got some helpful utility spells such as: air bubble, faerie fire, CLW, touch of the sea, barkskin, protection from energy and communal water walk. Working in both a CLW wand and endure elements wand for the group as well. At 7th Lvl I can get water breathing and something else fun that's helpful to the group. Combat-wise, I see him as a support fighter tandem with a trident and javelins...thematically I was trying to work in an unarmed combat option (Kurgess hunter with strength and all), but just can't make it work from a feat viability standpoint. I'm struggling with his magic choices and trying to get him to be combat-viable (mainly to-hit and AC issues), so still a work in progress.

Cheers!

One thing that I'll go ahead and mention in terms of the story and in-game RP side of the house, is that I'm not opposed to a bit of drama and character conflict in-game. Especially early on - we've just dropped five strangers with a tenuous charter into a life-and-death situation, for themselves and at least two/six others. I can already see potential conflicts in how Beorn is trying to reconcile strong sacred principles with reality, not to mention Hama and a whole oxcart-load of baggage (with a couple of secrets mixed in), with other characters trying to figure all of this out. Kas himself is designed to be a very amiable and easy-going character despite his holy "mandate" as a divine agent of Shelyn, but he too has areas where he'll compromise and where he won't.

So all in all, this could spell some early divisions and strife within the party, that they're going to have to work out over time as they travel and save each other's lives periodically. Some of this is going to morph into what each PC's role is for a fledgling land later. I'm also a fan of strong in-game friendships and personal ties...but obviously it's got to evolve through time and experiences if it's not going to feel cheesy and forced.

Of course, all this means that the PLAYERS need to be really understanding of what's going on with the characters, and make sure any character conflict is understood and has parameters that are accepted. As you said Ravindork, good communication and working any miscues out are key here.

The other note from my (player) perspective is that there need to be the non-action RP scenes to allow that to play out from time to time. Otherwise, (a) too much happens with flextime "in the past" postings that get wonky when trying to also deal with current scenes, or (b) the character motivations and essences have to be implied and shelved, leading to shallow "action only" characters.

So that's my 2 cp for the morning :)

Sorry, am I being too pushy? I wasn't sure if you were alluding to a potential out of game problem there or not. Don't hesitate to let me know if anything I do rubs you the wrong way. I'm all about communication and getting things worked out.

Nah Ravingdork, that's strictly PC in-game thoughts there concerning Kas. With Hama coming in as the conscripted driver and supplies bearer of the expedition (and not yet revealing her true talents), the events of Hama's strong vehemence towards bandits, her snake "friend" and now the ease by which she just lured a bandit sentry off to give away the camp's secrets would raise said eyebrows.

From Kasimyr's perspective right at this point: either Hama is much higher up in the bandit food chain than what she hinted at (even though Kas believes her vehemence at the bandits was heartfelt and legitimate), or she has other powers that she's not who she appears to be. She's taking STRONG initiative to go after these bandits and now run this ruse, which again stresses to Kas that Hama is not who she initially appears to be (i.e. not a 1st level commoner or expert).

So this is what he's reacting to in my narrative, though it's setup for RP for later, after however this goes with the bandit camp.

Semi-grognard reporting in!

For the first several months I didn't realize our "D&D" playing was just my friend making stuff up while we rolled dice and moved tokens on ad-hoc graph paper dungeons, but eventually that year I got to see a 1st ed. Monster Manual and played in an A2 'Secret of the Slavers Stockade' adventure!

One of my favorite finds on my bookshelf is an shrink-wrapped copy of the D&D Basic boxed set (grey, not pink). That being said, I never did see the original D&D or Chainmail rulesets in my time.

It was hard for me to move away from Greyhawk after so many years imagining stories in it, even after converting fully from 2nd ed. to Pathfinder.

Respectfully, if the banned user had not replied to the moderator's e-mail in such an emotionally-charged, inflammatory and aggressive manner, the ban probably wouldn't have happened. Even if the e-mail reply had some level of emotion to it (Ex. "I'm angry about my posts being deleted...") but also had some level of balance or understanding to what the moderator was trying to accomplish, it might have gone differently. As it was, the banned user is directly responsible for the e-mail reply sent to the moderator...and whatever consequences would arise from sending it.

Respectfully, this is a good example of why it's just not a wise idea to write an e-mail (response) in anger - whether in business, personal life, etc. Or write the e-mail, walk away from it before pressing 'Send' and then come back to it later and delete it.

Concerning the employee (moderator) who represents the business point-of-view, I can certainly see from the quoted text why a decision was made to say "just not worth it" and part ways after receiving that emotional e-mail reply, regardless of the perceived "right" or "wrong" of the situation that led up to it.

Hi Gang,

Once again my apologies for the impromptu hiatus from this game, and I appreciate your patience on this. In full disclosure I am in my final week of a fourteen-year job, which is interesting as I prepare for finding the next one. I should have a bit more time to write actually! For various reasons I've been experiencing a writer's block over the past two weeks, though over the weekend I feel rejuvenated and eager to write once again. So action coming soon after I review the last half-dozen posts or so today.

Cheers,

Well, that is an intriguing idea, and if the majority of the players agree then I can be counted upon to devote the time to it. I really enjoyed the foundation that we players had built here with our chosen characters...and even since it became clear that Crusty was perma-AWOL I didn't have the heart to try and go for another game - certainly not another Rebels game with Galen. I have one other PbP game that I am DM'ing, so I do have availability without overreach.

So I'm in if we can get the majority of players back to try it out as well. If not that's understandable of course.

Well I'm glad the new house isn't affected and that the family is all right. I've not seen anything like that directly since San Antonio in the late 90's, but the scenes remind me of a mixture of that and when the Mississippi River floods. The rains don't seem to be slacking off this week either.

Hey all, I took the deep plunge and no longer play MMOs, I ended my SWTOR subscription on March 8th. Of course, I can not completely give up computer gaming and play single player games like XCOM 2 and Fallout 4 but at least I don't have to worry about schedules and the endless grinding ... :-)

Congratulations Anderlorn!

Honestly, as Cromlich and I could attest to since 2011, it's a great decision and a liberating experience to get away from MMO's. I wrestled with it for quite a bit, but ultimately I found it was a profound change to let me do things that were more fulfilling to me...including getting enjoyment out of PbP's and creative writing as a more healthy fulfillment of free time. I did play a lot of Skyrim though, and a bit of Civ from time to time, but as you stated its easy to hit the pause button on non-MMO games.

Cheers!

Galen had his eyes shut tight when the man’s head came clean off from Darian’s blade, blood spraying in a bright crimson line across the street even as the man’s body still shook and stood for a moment before collapsing. With his dagger in one hand by his side Galen has his other hand at his mouth, his eyes clenched shut, trying not to vomit. He’s seen violence and blood before, but nothing like that. Like before at the Aria, he feels as if lost in some nightmarish dreamscape that he cannot quite wake from, the surroundings familiar but distinctly separate from what he considers his own true reality. Sounds are muffled and indistinct, though he picks up voices that are shouting and screaming all around him. His face is flushed and his heart pounds hard in his chest.

The word ’home’ from Avrora stirs something in him, and the pragmatic orders from Isabel give him something of a mental ladder to cling to and to climb out of his waking nightmare. Galen forces his eyes open, turning so as to not look at the swath of blood and the stump of the thug’s neck right before him on the street. He sees “Davis” with Isabel hefting up his beloved behind him, and in the alleyway “Charles” with “Julius” bringing up the unconscious man that they all chose to fight…and kill…for. There was nothing for it now – bodies and bystanders were everywhere on the Stirling Way.

Thankfully, he knew exactly where he was and how best to at least attempt to get them to a place of safety.

”Okay,” gulps Galen weakly, once again finding his throat dry. He shakes his head as if to clear it and looks to the others. ”Okay right!” He looks down Stirling as if deciding whether they should go farther down that way before turning in, but with the number of people pointing and gawking he decides against it. With sudden alacrity he runs out of the middle of the street and into the same alleyway where Varian and Darian have recovered the unconscious man, passing by both of them nimbly and taking the lead. ”This way!”

****************
They head down the alley towards the center “courtyard” of the four old, two-story dilapidated buildings with old columns that make a shape like an octagon; the bottom stories are boarded up and the buildings appear unused, though they can hear footfalls and activity above them on the second story walkways which cover the bottom floor entirely. Galen takes a right-hand turn and is off down a skirting side alley, which eventually angles around and down to another right-hand turn on another alleyway that heads east towards the cemetery of Old Kintargo. Yet they don’t stay that course for very long, taking the very next left alley back to the south, down a worn muddy path between two run-down boarded up buildings where most of the cobblestones have either eroded or been taken out for other purposes; the alley reeks of filth and garbage strewn about, with rats and mangy cats scurrying away from them even as a few dirty beggar-children run away as well, evidently attempting to use rocks to earn a few pinch with Thrune’s first proclamation. ”This way!” says Galen undeterred by the reeking filth of the garbage-strewn alley as he picks his way through it with practiced ease, waving with his hand for the rest of them to follow.

Coming out to a larger east-west alley that is still not large enough to be called a street, the six unlikely compatriots still find themselves in the run-down living area of Old Kintargo with its leaking roofs, worn-away facades and musty smells of rotted wood mixed with the salty air of the ocean. Yet there are vast differences from where they were just a couple of streets and alleys over – here they see scraps of bright colors in cloth and dyes that break up the drab browns and greys of old wood and stone. Sounds of music, shouting, talking and laughter can be heard from open doorways and collections of poor-garbed people sitting or standing out on swept wooden porches. Children laugh and play in the alleys, even as other children carry goods on errands or place dead pests in sacks with slings in their hands. To their east the alley runs straight as if it would head back towards Olmer’s Smithy, but at its end seems to be mostly blocked by several parked wagons with a group of burly men talking and sharing a makeshift bonfire. Doorways on the bottom floors of dilapidated buildings as well as windows on upper floors often have bundles of dried herbs hanging from them, or even hand-woven dreamcatchers in some places. The sounds of people talking is not all understood, revealing the people that live on this street are not native Cheliaxians.

”Welcome to Little Lowcleft,” says Galen with an air of affection in his voice after they all emerge from the nastier-smelling northerly alley that is somewhat blocked by ropes with old sheets of sailcloth to obscure the view. ”Not much to look at I’ll grant you, but those from my former homeland do their best to live here and make do. Community is the lifeblood of the Varisian…Lowcleft is a common but lively district in Magnimar you see…one can always find something that suits their fancy in the Lowcleft…anyways let’s head west another block and then left down the next street.”

As their group moves down the northernmost street of “Little Lowcleft” they can definitely tell they are the largest attraction of interest, with numerous women, older men and children looking in their direction from various downstairs doorways or upstairs windows. Galen nods and waves at a few of them, getting a few nods and even a few that respond with ’Galen’ or ’Zephyrus’ as he passes by. Given they carry two unconscious people with them and have stains of blood and battle however, the faces they pass by are grim and stern. By the time they make their next left there’s already a small group of children that are running ahead of them giving out what are probably warning whistles, with another small group of tough-looking men trailing behind them about sixty feet behind.

The small street they turn down has clotheslines strung overhead between two upper levels of rickety wooden dwellings, many with balconies and even makeshift catwalks that allow passage between the buildings lining the street. Colors are even more vivid here than on the prior alley, though the children bear only mild-colored scarves that are dyed a single color, whereas the adult men and women have more brightly dyed kapenia scarves of multiple hues. To their left are a series of local shops and craftsmen workshops on the bottom floor, with living areas on the second and third stories. To their right is a free-standing single-story market hub that looks like a general store of sorts, with an old worn three-story, double-winged larger building just behind it. Galen makes a decisive turn to the right to the near side of the general store and towards the larger three-story structure, towards an open doorway with a creaky wooden porch that is swept but clearly needs new boards for repair. The doorway has an etched ‘V’ across the top in painted colors of green and red that have almost completely faded from the sun. Two younger women with worn wooden brooms on the porch say nothing as the group passes into the edifice, nodding at Galen but with visible scowls.

Just as they all enter into what appears to be a large common room area with at least one stairwell and two hallways leading off from it, Galen forces a smile but whispers at them, ”Best if you let me do all the talking, alright?” Inside are a group of six older women all sitting around a heavy bed quilt they are collectively sewing, with a few young girls seated on the floor watching them or tending a low fire in the fireplace where a few teapots are tended to. It is clear that the boarding house owner has a good handle on who enters or leaves here, at least by the front entrance.

Galen says hello in passing and gestures to make for the single stairwell leading up, but he is called out about halfway across the room by one of the oldest quilting women with a bright red and green kapenia scarf, and long hair that has long turned white. Her blue eyes, however, are sharp and penetrating.

”Galen! Now I have given assent before of your young student friends when they come to call, but never so many and dressed as…” The old woman stops short, seeing the unconscious young woman and other man being carried, followed by the armor and shield of Avrora and the beggar’s clothes of “Julius” as well as small spatters of blood across several of their clothes. She seems to recognize Dany’s unconscious face, and stands up abruptly from her wooden chair as well as several of the others. Two burly men now step up onto the front porch behind them, no weapons in hand yet but looking tense. ”Galen…what has happened to your girl Dany? Why is she…who are these strangers that come into my house armed so?”

”I’m sorry, Madame Violca, truly I am! There was violence at the Aria just now and these men just started wading into the protest with maces and clubs…and they hit Dany and…and there was violence done…if it hadn’t been for these here I would have been killed and Dany with me…”

Madame Violca claps her hands once to interrupt him, putting up her hand for silence. She nods to the two men out on the porch, who promptly turn to block the door from anyone else coming in from outside, waving others over and speaking low in Varisian. Madame Violca likewise starts speaking in Varisian to Galen, with him replying to her in a tone as much as a grandson would speak to his grandmother.

Varisian:

”The Dottari did this?”

”Yes, they and ones who call themselves “citizens” of the Lord-Mayor, with maces and armbands of their allegiances. Thrune called for them to attack the crowd.”

”You did do violence then? On one of these citizens that attacked you and Dany?”

”I was involved, yes. Killing was done in self-defense. More than one. I think. Up on the Stirling.”

”Tell me all, Galen. Quickly.”

Galen takes the next minute to relate what happened at the Aria to Madame Violca in Varisian, with the old woman simply nodding and waving her hands at him to be quick in his explanation. When finished she snaps her fingers and points to two women to start carrying a table and chairs outside, as if to barrier off the front of the boarding house in an appearance of doing work on the front porch. A bustle of activity occurs in the common room as old women and young girls all start moving with purpose even while staying quiet.

As for Madame Violca, she has a final few words with Galen in Varisian.

Varisian:

”Were you seen coming here from the Stirling?”

”I don’t think so – I took a varied way and saw no one following, coming in by the Path of Refuse to throw off any scent.”

”Clever boy. By my vow to Mireli’s spirit I would spill blood to protect you, young Galen, but I cannot risk my family or the others in my clan for these others you bring here. You understand the limits of my aid to you?”

”Yes, Madame Violca. But they saved my life and Danyeren’s and I cannot abandon them.”

”Of course not. But you are giving them the trusted oath of your family for anything they do here, and you must take responsibility.”

”For whatever my family name is worth, I freely give the oath of hospitality to them, taking on any burdens they should make as my own.”

”Very well. Take them upstairs to your room. I shall have Ylenia and Sorinah bring you food and strong tea soon. You know the whistle calls describing numbers and location. We will keep the Dottari and these citizen dogs befuddled and confused should they come to our streets. If they do come here though, you know the sounds of the cat fight, yes? The one used before when Greedy Karl made a botch of his pilfering the Cheliaxian merchant last year?”

”Yes, Madame Violca. I know it.”

”Good. If you hear it take your outsiders down the back stairs to the old basement level and out that way towards the cemetery. If necessary, Madame Mihaela here will hide Dany as her own – she has always loved her singing you know. But I will not hide this other man, so your friends must make a choice if it comes to it.”

”I understand, Madame Violca. I’ll make sure they understand.”

”Good boy.”

Madame Violca turns to the rest of the group and says sternly, ”Galen Mistbringer has given his Varisian oath to shelter you, taking responsibility for all your acts that you do here in my house. Do you understand? I shall try to hide and shield you, but if the Dottari or their henchmen come to my doors you must leave quickly and quietly. Galen knows the secret ways should this come to pass. Now go, and I shall have food and drink brought up to you soon.”

****************
Up the stairs to the second story, they go right down a hallway and around a corner, passing by a number of doors that bear no numbers to them, though each has a marking or splash of color on it that seems to differentiate one from the next. A few feet from the end of the hall where a shared washroom exists they come to a door with a stylized ‘Z’ carved in the doorframe, at which Galen opens a rather poor-looking latch and enters. The room is larger than expected but still a single room, with a lone window on the far end draped with a ragged cloth windowshade tacked up at the top. The room is poor and sparse but surprisingly clean, smelling faintly of a pleasant aromatic incense. Two rickety wooden chairs stand next to a pine wooden table fashioned from spare wood and ends of logs, a lone candle worn down to the nub sitting atop it. A wooden sidetable holds a few wooden mugs and plates, though they all look to be clean and stacked neatly. An old couch sits on one wall, all its upholstery long gone but padded with blankets and a rather colorful though worn patchwork quilt. On the other wall closer to the window lies the bed, old wood with a broken-down stitched mattress to it, but otherwise clean and made up with another patchwork quilt. A heavy clay chamber pot with a matching lid stands in one corner by itself. The walls are bare except for near the lone table where several parchments are tacked up with sketched ink drawings of various scenes of Kintargo, as well as a portrait of Galen himself. Though poorly furnished, there are a couple of exceptions that do not fit the lifestyle - a finer-made oaken bookshelf holds about a dozen books of various sizes along with several collections of loose parchment and quills, and a heavily engraved oaken footlocker chest sits at the foot of Galen’s bed which was clearly not scavenged. Finally, a lone wooden shelf on the wall above the bed displays a pretty glazed ceramic vase of blues and greys, along with several figurines made of carved wood or polished stone depicting various types of small animals.

”My home is your home,” intones Galen formally as they enter, before he wearily sits himself down on his own floor, offering the chairs to his guests. ”If you can set Dany on the bed…and this other poor man on the couch I suppose…I can start up some tea for us that I happened to buy earlier in the week.”

I've stayed away from much of this for the past few weeks, as I needed to not dwell into the negative and focus on other creative aspects of my role-playing hobby which I enjoy greatly. Lately I've digested these discussion posts as well as what's on the messenger app. I've also talked with Cromlich and why he left the game. At this point I think I've distilled down what's eating at me with this game, and what (as a player) I need in order to invest the creative time and energy as Verik.

Lorekeeper and Steven, I can both understand your viewpoints and your reasoning behind them (I suppose I will add Shane to this from third-hand knowledge, though he has not posted here to know for certain). I just don't agree with where they put the Kingmaker game at in a continuity and pacing sense, or the consequences to those players like myself that want to post with greater frequency and/or consistency.

Simply put, if ALL the players have this same outlook there would be no game to play - it would be utterly impossible to carry on a shared story experience in writing if every player is writing once every two+ weeks, or gone for weeks or months at a time with no communication of leaving or returning. That scenario has plagued the current Eye of the Cyclops chapter at least three times now, which is why we've had to engage in a rehash of players last fall season. The disappearance of more than one character in a scene - social or combat - creates issues of momentum where the scene becomes flat...or falls apart completely. The perceived inequality of participation creates ill-feelings and trust issues among the players. Eventually, the posting devolves down to a series of player-to-NPC solo interactions, and is no longer about a group experience.

Yet if DM Barcas wants to allow some players to interact infrequently or at their own pace and choosing, who am I as a player to say otherwise? That has essentially been the truth of the Jemini character for several years now since the middle of Rivers Run Red. When we've had five or six other players that can write and keep the game going it simply didn't matter as much - I just object to the heart of the story arcs running through that character when other characters are left as utterly peripheral (which I believe happened with the Borodin character). Perhaps there is room for multiple play-styles and levels of interaction if DM Barcas wants to spend the time to run different characters at different levels and storylines in the campaign. All I can do is clearly state what I need in order to fully participate in this game with Verik and be fine with it.

So for me to have enjoyment and interest in Kingmaker, I NEED three or four players besides myself to be actively participating two-to-three times weekly in the shared story my character is engaged in. That's what I signed up for back in 2011 when I took over Verik from Rellen's departure. That is what I strive for. I want to look at the boards DAILY and see "something" is going on by "someone" so that I can think about it that day or night and play off of it the next time I sit down and write for Verik. With four or five players doing that together, the scenes and the story arcs are moving forward each week, whether in dialogue, combat or narrative. It's interesting. It's fun. If I have trouble figuring out an interaction for my character in a scene, the other players posting tends to give me creative energy or an angle I didn't see before, so that I in turn get enthused and write something cool. Which in turn helps for another player to write for their character. Four or five players can keep any scene going...and usually bring in unique elements that pumps up the DM to be more enthusiastic and creative. That's what I've seen works, and is what I strive for in my Zeitgeist PbP game.

That's what I need to continue with Kingmaker as a player. Four-to-five core players including myself, consistently posting multiple times weekly, with adequate communication on departures or absences over a week in duration. That core group should also have the principal/primary arc stories and threads running through their characters. If other players besides that core group are allowed by the DM to run characters at different frequencies and commitment levels, either as PC-to-NPC solo roles or with a couple players on their own dedicated side-arc, I wouldn't personally object as I'm not forced to play at that pace (it would be fun to read actually in the context of the main storyline play).

All of that though puts a lot on the DM to setup and maintain. I cannot assume DM Barcas has either the time or the inclination to do it. All I can do is to honestly describe what I need out of the game to continue to write and play my character.

Good Evening,

Tonight (12/17pm EST) as I was working on adding description to information on my Zeitgeist campaign's Campaign Information Tab (NPC description information for the campaign), I discovered to my surprise that the site was automatically deleting the bottom-most text information from the tab! I'm assuming it is due to size limitations on the tab, but there were absolutely no warnings given about clipping text, nor were there any errors given in saving the tab with updated data. The bottom-most text of the Campaign Info tab has simply been culled and cut out.

This is very frustrating, as I have lost written material the GM and players refer to without even knowing it. In times past I thought that hitting a size cap on a profile tab would simply error upon saving, but in this case the save occurs without issue and the system simply cuts off a portion of text arbitrarily. Is this normal and expected for the Campaign Info Tab of a PbP game? If so, how does a GM know when they are approaching a theoretical limit to avoid losing precious material added over time?

Sincerely,
Anthony Springstun

I get the feeling there's going to be a convergence soon and we're not continuing on separate tracks, so I'm not sure we should skip forward in time at this point. Are we all about to be asked to join Aylene today or some such?

Well you all know which way I like to play it, but I'll defer to the rest of you of course. I have a couple more I'd like to write tonight, as well as kingdom turn mechanics stuff. However, I can always put them in a spoiler once the current timeline moves forward.

I'll be out on a beach excursion from today through Monday - I'll be checking in over the weekend but won't have my array of books/maps/sheets/etc. for any Kingdom Turn tracking or what-not. Heh maybe I can get some time to get those interim posts done that are rolling around in my mind...

Yeah that's pretty interesting for a Jemini development there. I want to play off of that on an interim post in an early Spring month, but haven't gotten there quite yet (as I have two others at Varnhold rolling around in my head). I figured I may play off of that in conjunction with Verik going through the crafted magical items he's doing for a few folks.

As Steve and I are handling the Kingdom Building turns for this go-around, as mentioned above I've gotten all the tracking and summary sheets ready to go. After talking with Steve I'm going to go and take the first turn for 10/4712 (Lamashan), which was the month we were in to-date for Eye of the Cyclops.

Some thoughts before I post the turn here:
* Berrin mobilizes the main forces of Newhaven (1st Army & Mounted in Sanctuary, 2nd Army & Mounted in Dragonswatch) after the 25th of the month. Given this, I'm not including any consumption increase yet for the armies in the field. However, starting in Neth (11/4712) the consumption rate will go WAY up (+39 to consumption rate) since they're not garrisoned. So, this makes the last full month of "normal" improvements and expenditures. DM Question is how long the armies are 'in the field' from a week/month perspective - thru Calistril (02/4713)?

* Not sure if it is in Neth or Kuthona, but it appears we'll be adding the 14 hexes of Varnhold to our realm soon, increasing our control DC and consumption further - though some of the hexes are improved and such. Between that and the armies in the field, we're going to be stretched for winter. I'm assuming once we get to that we'll know how to add Varnhold city in its post-disaster form, as well as any other changes to Varnhold hexes.

* We were one turn away last time from adding a couple new towns to the south "Near Tuskdowns"(hex 03.13) and north "Moorvale" (hex 01.02) areas, which represents the Galtan refugees from the year as well as solidifying Newhaven on the Tuswkater/Candlemere lakes. Given what is about to happen in the Pitax-Mivon dispute, this looks to be pretty timely. In the north a fort will be converted to the settlement of Promise, which will get a couple of free buildings (barracks, stables) out of it. In the south will be the settlement of Candlewatch, with Candlemere Isle in the distance.

* It's a little fru-fru, but I'm spending BP on magical streetlamps and an everflowing spring for the "All-Faiths" Cathedral in Sanctuary's southern district, just to capstone the magnificence of that achievement. We're probably not going to be able to spend much on Sanctuary after this month. I'm also putting in a Shrine at Dragonswatch to represent Calistria there, and a Stockyards to take advantage of all the farms around the town.

Anyone up for some interim posts of the next days/weeks/etc. ? Maybe a dialogue or how things look a couple weeks later in Varnhold, that sort of thing?

Verik will stay in Varnhold, defending it and starting the rebuilding plans and working to make camps and such until sufficient help arrives from the west. Also in his mind are plans for the winter that is soon coming (Neth would be like November I think).

Don't mind me...nothing to see here citizens...just digging up some of last year's RRR posts on our last Kingdom Turns for Rova 4712 (09/4712). These were the latest examples we used for those taking the kingdom turn as well as the "after-turn" summary with all the updated stats and such.

There's a Kingdom Turn Spreadsheet that I have as well to calculate all the stats and such once each turn is taken - I can make that available via Google Docs if desired.

Oh and also a link to my image gallery where all of the hex and city grid maps are kept for the turns.

Pretty cool when I started looking back through it - we ran through 24 turns last year with Steven, Sigz, Celeador and myself.

Yeah, I agree with you there that it's probably the best option. I do that now for our RotRL tabletop campaign that uses a modified (thrown out armor/weapon attunement) version of Automatic Bonus Progression. I think with respect to the armor and weapons specifically, it might be easy enough to just make them all +x to equal what one's progression tier is. I'm going to mess around with it on Verik this weekend.

EDIT: One small issue I found with perm adjustment out of the Personal Tab is that save bonuses don't have "Resistance" as one of the drop-down choices. Which is weird. I picked "Enchantment" bonus instead, but I did have to be careful if I happened to encounter something else item-wise that had a Resistance save effect (in my particular case a Sidhedron Medallion from RotRL).

I'm a big big fan of this. I think for our KM campaign this is even more FUN than Automatic Bonus Progression, because of the ability to make progression choices. The example provided is a great example, because even though I know what it is, it can still be hard to get one's arms around the changes.

Like Unchained's Automatic Bonus Progression (which I believe this system handles armor/weapon attunements soooo much easier and better by the way), the only "wrinkle" I see we need to self-police is in not going for a "golf bag" of variant energy-type or bane weapons, because the now-lower pricing for enchanting just the armor/weapon effects. It's meta-game and cheesy, and I think the players can have a mutual agreement to keep magic weapons meaningful and not go that route. I'm certainly fine for Isaac to come up with a short list of banned or price-adjusted effects if/as he feels appropriate with a system like this. Since we play with a more stringent magic item crafting requirement anyway (i.e. all the item creation requirements must be met), I think this poses less of an issue for our campaign.

Hehe, this will somewhat blow up HeroLab use, but we're all certainly able to calculate our statblocks and combat bonuses without the HeroLab crutch (or should be)!

Silver Crusade

Male Human 8th Lvl Expert

Hmmm...WBL is continuing to kill Jemini (and Nikolai I expect) due to certain items introduced early on. Which I suspect falls into the "not fun" category.

Though it would hurt Verik's crafting a bit and I'd have to redo some of his crafted stuff downwards, is there any possibility we can discuss a modified Automatic Bonus Progression from the recent Pathfinder Unchained book? Maybe where we keep WBL as-is but sub in that system w/ exception of armor and weapons (in other words IGNORE the armor/weapon attunement because it's counterproductive to the point of the alternate rules in the first place). Hand-waive out the cloaks of resistance/amulets of natural armor/rings of protection/stat belts & headbands and put them on the static level scale.

Just my 2cp on that to try and make WBL less of an issue with cool stuff we've had to dump or pass on in the game.

Well it's not your fault you don't score a crit on demand to even the fight. I'm hoping Cromlich can get a good shot in next, and then at least Nikolai and Borodin might get an AoO opportunity if she moves to Jemini or tries to cast another spell-like ability from there. I'll keep an eye for a flanking setup if there's a chance for me to set that up next round.

So...I'm not sure why everyone is leaving the combat? I guess I'll start thinking about a new character.

I offered a ranged weapon to Jemini to smite, and I attacked her because there's no elevation note on the map and she just flew down to touch me.

So..before Nikolai dies, I'd like to know if the has to roll spell resistance to get past the protection from evil effect, and whether anyone else is gonna fight her. The smite would beat her smaller DR and a few full attacks should be all we need.

Just to throw this out there in open discussion - Cromlich and I had agreed last round that we were going to show our characters backing up to the hall, in order to demonstrate a need to get out of the town square and bring the fight indoors - perhaps draw her into a corridor or such. Up until this very last round, she's clearly demonstrated she can just hang out up there and blow us apart from range no matter what we do. After she didn't swoop down from Jemini's first Antagonize (Diplomacy) and our non-empowered insults, I'm quite frankly surprised she came down to melee range with Nikolai...but then again I didn't know she had CL12 Slay Living either, so there's that.

Borodin is 20' away so he can easily attack next round (top of Round 6) - his last round (top of Round 5) she was 30' up in the air so there's no loss on his part. I'm sure he'll get back into it next, but with all the energy resistances my thought is that he's somewhat nerfed in his assault unless he gets a lucky crit-hit.

Verik tried to go for the burn on an 'Approach' Command - that would have been so very cool if he had got it done, but realistically it was only a 20% chance even after breaching SR with a Hero Point. I'm not ashamed of the attempt - a final 3d6 channel isn't going to mitigate the damage we're taking. If the valkyrie stays in melee in Round 6, I'll probably burn the last channel I have to Grayflame the blade and do as much damage as I can before falling. I won't have Verik run away from this one.

(Edited first paragraph to make it clearer where we were trying to move to)

Kept my 3 channels, subbed out all my spells but AoE buffs and debuff removals, used the curing wand as appropriate. Those HP's at the bottom of my post should be accurate, so adjust your sheets/HeroLab profiles as needed.

I didn't expend effort to heal Jemini, though I certainly can if needed - I don't know what her current Oracle CLW spell use (5/5?) is or LoH uses left, though assuming it's done (0/9) today after the multiple channels and the haunt.

At high levels, even Tier 1 is an amazing force multiplier. Mythic is simply that good, especially in the hands of a number cruncher.

Yeah, that was my experience with letting in Tier 1 Mythic to my campaign as well. While I wouldn't say it was over the top for me, it definitely caught me by surprise in my encounter planning. As others have stated here, for my group it was the mythic feat choice, sometimes in combination with the mythic path ability choice. Mythic Power Attack + Impossible Speed ability was one, Mythic Weapon Finesse + Mythic Arcane Strike (per Extra Mythic Feat path ability) was another combo for a rogue/arcane trickster type, the crafting wizard took Crafting Mastery path ability and was able to retrain several feats (per Ultimate Campaign rules) to beef up combat spellcasting as he never had before. My first encounters after their Tier 1 ascension were pretty woeful, and I had to rethink it a fair bit.

I still think it was fun to do and not insta-ruin for the campaign, but I did not expect that much of a plateau bump-up in power from it.

I've run GMPC's in most of my games for twenty-five years now, and my buddy has done the same in his games he helms. It's truly never been a problem. In the end, the characters all feel like characters in an epic story, where all of them matter, and they all need each other. In a small group such as ours, it allows for a fully realized group AND allows for the GM to play "on the other side of the table" when another player runs a small stretch of non-arc sessions as a "guest" GM. Is it harder to pull off correctly as a GM? Yes. Are there potential pitfalls and traps to be avoided with it? Sure. Yet they can be easily understood and avoided with the right group of dedicated and mature gamers.

Like so many topics on these boards and with role-playing in general, the issue has much less to do with the stated issue, and far more to do with the maturity and chemistry of the people that make up the gaming group.

Yes you are -- lalalalalalallalalalalaa not listening! I like my life right now free of video games where I am actually interacting with my wife and kids. Plus my home PC is like 3+ years out-of-date for any decent quality games coming out these days.

Also, what can I expect to happen at JUST level 9 tier 1?

It's interesting you asked that, as my own homebrew campaign introduced Mythic Tier 1 to the characters as they were at 10th level. Similar to your initial expectations going into it by reading the book and making some standard assumptions, I figured the encounters needed to be bumped up by +1 CR or something along those lines. I found that was woefully inadequate, and that even at Tier 1 the PC's having Mythic qualities was a game-changer. It really caught me off-guard as a DM I must admit. It wasn't the ability to use 5 mythic points to surge d20 rolls that was the big deal, or even the choice of mythic path ability to get in an extra attack or spell with those same points (though they trumped Hero Points for the players which was somewhat anticipated). To some extent it was the PC choice of their mythic path abilities (as some are definitely more powerful than others), but mostly it was the choice of the Mythic Feat for each PC. Choices such as Mythic Power Attack and Mythic Weapon Finesse transformed our supporting marital characters into much more serious martial threats, chewing up the standard encounters, and Mythic Arcane Strike wasn't bad either.

Currently my game has them at 12th level, so I've seen just a couple levels of the Mythic impact there. I'm not saying it was a campaign wrecker by any means, but as a DM I have to really think about the encounters in a different way than I did before. From a story standpoint it's been as fun as I thought it might be, but let's just say when a player asked "hey do you think we'll get a shot at Tier 2 soon" my response was a resounding 'nope' without much thought. At least for the time being.

How about a Hunter? While on the surface having an animal companion may seem "too much" with handling it, the player will get quickly used to working with the animal companion on a constant basis, and the leveling up is pretty straightforward for it. Lots of skill points, has divine spells to contribute with right away but narrowly focused with spells known. Can be ranged and use the pet in defense or attack without feeling completely vulnerable on the front-line, and does some different damage than the barbarian and magus. Only snag would be perhaps for you to help him with narrowing choices on the animal focus ability to just a couple until he gets comfortable with it in a couple of levels.

Addressed to the Players:
Respectfully, it's time to rekindle some old habits and tailor yourselves to checking the Kingmaker game much more frequently, and posting much more than once-weekly to get momentum going again.

The game is waaaayyyyy too slow again right now, and not sure if it's because everyone is waiting around for someone else to jump first, or thinking the scene has to be tailored perfectly for the character (instead of finding your own opportunities or creating new ones), or reticent to post because you think it has to be a huge perfect post every time, or what. If it's because there's work and school and family and house "stuff" I certainly get it to a point, but let's be honest that there's always that going on at various levels for everyone involved in the game.

Personally, I think the interim period between RRR and Eye got players out of posting habit. Which happens of course, but if so it's time to refocus those habits of posting. Too few posts = too little synergy and creativity = less posts = game stall. Let's reverse the trend here. Not every post has to move the arc plot along, and any type of post shows what the character is doing or thinking, which creates opportunities for reaction. Some of our best stuff has been the sideline talk that brings out character depth.

Anyway, we have a scene here set before us to where we've all met back up and have some new developments going on, before we suit up and potentially get into a combat scene. Let's make the most of it and stop the drifting.

Answer to OP question - YES

Converted from AD&D 2nd Ed. to it, finished an off-and-on twenty year campaign with it, started a more recent 3yr campaign with it that is now winding up, looking to delve into one of the AP's for the first time, and got into PbP here with it. So far my home group has no reason to go away from it, aside from a few small homebrew "tweaks" which is nothing monumental. Any issues I have with Pathfinder have less to do with the game and more to do with Golarion concepts and consistency, but that's not a reason to gripe about the game itself...and some of the Golarion lore has grown on me in the last couple of years.

To be fair, while my gaming group and I like to build strong capable characters in these campaigns, none of us look to explore the wrinkles in the system that could unbalance it in gameplay. Then again, I personally see that issue as less about game mechanics and more about player attitude.

@Lorekeeper - Just in case you haven't seen it in the OOC kingdom turns for months 7-8, there's a hospital and cathedral for Sanctuary. Sigz had a great idea for the Cathedral to be a massive cooperative effort by the "All Faiths Conclave" to construct it for all "good" faiths that have a presence in Newhaven, with a leading (financial) influence by the Iomedaeans, Shelynites, Abadarians, Irori monks...and the recent arrival of a host of Sarenrae followers from the south. Though it is more than just the trinity of deities that Jemini reveres, she now has all three of those faiths firmly represented in Sanctuary and Newhaven.

I figured the Hospital is built and overseen by the Sarenrae faithful, and now gives a proper home for those that have been rescued as well as the sick and injured. We even figured this would be the time that Doctor Atago could be returned and given a role at the hospital.

So what do you think? Do you want to name the hospital and do you have other thoughts on how you want the Sarenrae faction/All-Faiths Cathedral/Doctor Atago/Hospital to develop in the last months of the interim?

Looks really good. Note we have a wrinkle we'll have to adjust in turn 10 where our Promotion Edict is only 1/2 cost due to the Cathedral, so consumption is at a .5 mark - we can increase the edict in next turn to even it out.

Only other wrinkle is that we technically claimed 8.11 "Warg Valley across the Gudrin. If that's a problem in that we 'wouldn't have done that' we can always substitute hex 3.08 in place of 8.11. Or could be that they moved south and east for wilder claims, but we should clarify where their boundaries are on the map for future turns.

Celeador has Turn 9 at bat right now, so from my perspective it's on me and Sigz to get our prior-month summaries done in 4712. I have a long one for months 1-2 that I'm doing right now, one that I think will be a fun read.

EDIT: Month 9 4712 is the last one right? Or do you want Month 10 done even though we're going to be playing in that month
