So in the vehicles section on the SRD there are two affordable boats. The 50gp row boat which is 8- to 12-foot-long boat with two oars holds two or three Medium passengers. Then there is the ships boat which costs 500gp but says nothing on how many people it can carry. I was curious on if there was a ruling on it somewhere.
Kwesi Akerele
Ship's boat is up to 16 Medium creatures as a combination of crew and passengers, as per here. It does require a crew of 4, so it doesn't quite fit the big-ish single person boat niche. A couple of rowboats would cover the entire group, though, and I was definitely planning on having some kind of permanent small-ish boat.
I've picked up a narwhal and an otter as pets - I've paid the usual price for each to keep character wealth fair, and I've got a high enough Handle Animal to automatically train them for the purposes I've given them. The narwhal I've trained for protection (combat training plus the trick to attack weird things) and the otter I've trained to help me with harvesting (hunting purpose plus the trick to attack weird things).
Kwesi Akerele
Yeah, folding boat is probably the best bet, to make sure we don't get separated and that the boat doesn't float away. Although roleplay-wise it'd make most sense to pick that up after circumstances have brought us together, since none of us can afford it on our own, so I'll still probably have a rowboat.
Malorrem Dovar
Deaths here. This is at least most of my barbarian. Sorry he turned into a streaker. I have not slept much so weird things happen. If there is stuff that people do not like then let me know. Also my math should be good but I do not trust me on a good day.
I think I have my skills where I want them and I am still organizing my loot. So I should have that done after work tonight.

Howdy All!
I'm Vorduvai and GM Wicked asked me to go ahead and pop in here and say hello. Just a quick PbP background on myself: I started playing PbP back in 2011 in a long-running Kingmaker game (taking over an existing PC when the player went missing) with a lot of rich story and in-depth narrative elements to it. I've attempted to join only a few games since then, and regrettably two that I've joined had GM's who went AWOL...but one of them was with Something Wicked as a fellow player, and I've always kept tabs on reading the CotCT game that GM Wicked was running. My main activity on the PbP front has been GM'ing a Zeitgeist: Gears of Revolution game since late 2014.
Anyway, I've been wrangling over a Hunter (divine hunter archetype) concept since yesterday, thinking that might be a good support melee fighter + utility person to augment what you're all putting forward. Basic concept is as an athletically handsome but not-too-bright follower of Kurgess who's come down south over the years in a mixture of daring exploration, friendly competition and getting into trouble, being in Hyrantam for only a few months or so. He's been a sailor deckhand (profession: sailor), small boat guide (rowboat included!), hunter of creatures, occasional mercenary scout (survival/tracking) and other odd-job type - whatever allows him to journey and see new sights, that sort of thing. I see him as a bit of a bravado but only where it adds some humor to the game - he's just not as smart or charismatic as he thinks he is to pull it off, and is more happy-go-lucky like a Caydenite might be. I see him living currently to start in his rowboat tied up somewhere, complete with tent and odd bits of waterproofed tarps, where he can feed his animal "friend" and such.
I'll get a profile here going today for him...mechanics-wise he's got some helpful utility spells such as: air bubble, faerie fire, CLW, touch of the sea, barkskin, protection from energy and communal water walk. Working in both a CLW wand and endure elements wand for the group as well. At 7th Lvl I can get water breathing and something else fun that's helpful to the group. Combat-wise, I see him as a support fighter tandem with a trident and javelins...thematically I was trying to work in an unarmed combat option (Kurgess hunter with strength and all), but just can't make it work from a feat viability standpoint. I'm struggling with his magic choices and trying to get him to be combat-viable (mainly to-hit and AC issues), so still a work in progress.
Cheers!

Ohai Vord! Welcome! The character sounds neat - I'm intrigued to play with him. :)
GM Wicked
Welcome Vorduvai! So pleased to have you join us for this salty adventure. Vord and I had a great time in a short lived Hells Rebels game and I'm very excited to play with him again.
Busy day! I'll try to sit down tonight and catch up with the thread.
GM Wicked
@DAA: let's save knowledge of DR for the appropriate knowledge checks. Malorrem looks great! Clever choice on the aquatic combat feat--I hadn't even thought about that!
Boats - if you're going to buy an expensive boat, one way to make sense of pooling funds at the beginning might have you all living in Hyrantam for a couple of months prior to the campaign beginning. It would mean you all already have some local knowledge and ties, but also explain how you'll pool all that money into a massive vessel. The folding boat is within your limit if everyone contributes equally. But remember the recommended mode of travel is rowboat, which the enclave can provide. I hate to give spoilers, but the folding boat may not be used enough to justify the investment.
A couple of other things:
First, who's PC is already set up to be native to the city, or at least been there for a couple of months? I know Kwesi and Malorrem, how about the others?
Second, please visit the Roll20 link above and make sure you can log in alright. You might need to create an account, but it's easy and free to do so. I have a paid membership, so you'll have mobile access to maps. Let me know if you have any problems with that.
Other stuff? I'm sure there's lot to discuss but I've got to run!
"Dima" Dimaratis
First workup of Dima! Not the best avatar but it will do. It's funny what you get wrapped up in - I'm very proud of Dima's rowboat "house" hehe. Dima's animal friend is an alligator, so I think that will do nicely. More to come on appearance/background/personality/etc. soon.
Malorrem Dovar
Glad you liked him. Since this place has so much water and his swim skill went so high I figured the feat would be worth it.
Welcome Vorduvai/Dima! The hunter seems like an interesting class and Dima looks like fun!
I have gone to the Roll20 and check out the maps. I am JessicaH. The little octopus with a top hat. Cause I am fancy like that :)
Since I am going for the flotsam housing, because nothing will go wrong there, what amount of gold should I shell out for it?
Shearwater
Welcome, Vord/Dima! It seems that we've had very similar experiences with PbP, but I won't bore you with my autobiography. Suffice it to say that any friend of Rennai and GM Wicked is a friend of mine. :)
Shearwater, I really want you to be excited about your character, so if you want the fancy bow please take it.
No need to worry about me. I'm totally hype! After some rumination, I think I'll stick with the changes. The more I think of it, the more sense it makes to focus on the thing I'm actually good at.
First, who's PC is already set up to be native to the city, or at least been there for a couple of months? I know Kwesi and Malorrem, how about the others?
Assuming Schist just got dropped off a ship, Shearwater might have been on board as well. Out of everyone here, he seems like the one Shearwater might have known previously.
"Dima" Dimaratis
I'd say that Dima will be in Hyrantam for a few months, finding a good spot for his parked rowboat and doing odd-jobs as ferryman, guide, fisherman, rustic healer and critter hunter/remover. I've just had a chance to read Malorrem's background - perhaps they have come to know each other while trading favors for services or competing in the 'who's the best swimmer' wager or two!
Malorrem Dovar
"If your northern blood can handle the head of that tropical water!"
I am perfectly fine with it. The two seem like they would get along rather swimgingly :D haha I slay me... I need sleep so much.
Kwesi Akerele
If we aren't going to get good use out of a folding boat, let's call it good with rowboats and a swan boat feather token or two and let everyone have more cash on hand to play with. :) Roll20 works fine for me, and I like the sound effects - adds atmosphere while staying low-key. ;)
Kwesi's been in Hyrantam all her life, and is part of the Gozren priesthood (such as it is) in town, so I imagine most people would have at least heard her name if they're not stepping fresh off the boat. She's not necessarily the most sociable, though - her contribution tends to be more practical than spiritual, and she tends to opt for tasks that let her keep to herself as much as possible. The attack she suffered when she was twelve or thirteen and the following changes are somewhat of an open secret, and the scarring and physical alterations from that can make her look fairly daunting, although I'll leave it to Wicked how much the general public knows what's happened.
Contact with other party members/townsfolk through working together is probably the most likely. Since she's one of the most confident in the water (due to being one of the freakier things in it herself) it'd make sense that they'd send newbies like Malorrem and/or Dima with her if they were looking for physical work. And if Dima's skilled with animals himself, it makes sense that he and Kwesi would have met up at some point to compare notes. Btw, Dima, she probably wins the swimming contest, what with being able to fairly easily work up a 50-foot swim speed. ;)
I'm working on getting more fluff up for Kwesi now, and I've still got some money-spending to do as well. I should be finished by tomorrow evening.
Malorrem Dovar
Where you getting the idea I am newbie?
Kwesi Akerele
From a strange, fictitious memory deep in the recesses of my faulty brain, it seems. It's been one of those days. :)
"Dima" Dimaratis

"You wanna put a wager on that brash talk there, Kwesi? You may have the locals 'know, but I've come onshore first from Magnimar to Kintargo, from Corentyn to Azir, to Drenchport and Port Peril in the Shackles!"
Hehe, I'm sure Kwesi does win the swimming contest, and Malorrem may as well with his powers. I think it will be fun to see Dima in dismay the first couple of times we go all-out from one island of Hyrantam to the other :)
Logged into Roll20, so all set there!
Malorrem Dovar
Nope. Swimming contests are for fun so no rage would happen. It would be mortal against mortal. I need to give you a fighting chance Dima!
Kwesi would a challenge that he knows he is likely to fail. But stoves for anyways.
Malorrem Dovar

"Kweis, you are luck you are not the type of priestess who took a vow of sobriety."
Malorrem Dovar
Would I be able to keep a great sword in a efficient quiver? There is one slot that hold up to six long weapons. Like pole arms and bows. I only have one pole arm, a ransur, and a longbow. So there is space.
Also other than the header thing Malorrem should be done.
Kwesi Akerele
Ok, Kwesi should now be done (barring possible slight gear adjustments and header). Her fluff has been hashed out and expanded upon, and is available for anyone who wants to peruse it. Wicked, I ended up having to use name substitutes a lot for the elders Kwesi works with - are there any particular names that stand out among the Gozren priesthood in town? Having a particular friend/sponsor among them would be nice to make her feel more connected.
GM Wicked
I'm about to PM some additional information for our "natives" Kwesi and Malorrem, as well as the recent resident Dima.
When would you all like to begin? We could start this week, or wait until the Bloodsworn Vale game closes?
Kwesi Akerele
I'm good with starting this week. Truthfully, Bloodsworn Vale's very near done; I was close to narrating the entire castle in a fell swoop yesterday, but I wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to do what they wished in the throne room. (But if you guys want to wait for it to finish up, totally fine, too.)
Malorrem Dovar
But 'lands, titles, and gold'
I am good either way honestly.
GM Wicked
Your sword should fit fine malorrem!
I'll finish the intro post and have it up by tomorrow. I'll let you guys describe your journey into town and kick off where every great adventure begins, in the pub.
Just a couple things to keep in mind:. It's a small town, so the locals should know each other very well. Shearwater and Schist are also arriving together and have some familiarity with one another.
Have I missed anything? Any other pre-game questions???
Malorrem Dovar
Awesome! We are going to be swimming best buddies :D
GM Wicked
Dima looks great! I'll have first post up by this evening!
GM Wicked
All sheets to the wind! We're off! If you have questions about how to enter the scene, let me know. I've intentionally left it open ended to allow you to describe your PC to us.
Kwesi Akerele
Gods, I love shanties.
I had a heck of a time getting the Paizo site to cooperate earlier, so this is the first chance I'm getting to look over the introduction and compose thoughts. (Curse you, Humble Bundle! She says as she tries to talk herself out of buying it this instant.) I'm working on a post, but it's the end of a long day and I may not be able to get it finished until tomorrow.
Malorrem Dovar
Not enough sleep was had to do my post. I did all my other games and my brain is getting so foggy. This will be the first one I check when I wake up from what I hope is the first full night of sleep in nearly two weeks.
Apparently no sleep for me makes a streaking barbarian. Who was almost an occasional drunken cross dresser. Lack of sleep is bad. So good night all!
Shearwater
I think I'll let Schist take the lead and riff off of that. That is assuming that he and Shearwater did arrive on the same vessel at the same time, and Schist's player is okay with the two being acquainted.
"Dima" Dimaratis
So hope you don't mind Rennaivx, but I had an idea of writing a bit of a rocky start for Dima and Kwesi where it also indirectly ties in Malorrem. The intent is meant for humor, so please play it up or play it down as you want to with Kwesi!
Schist Goldcoal
Sorry, life got incredibly hectic these past few days and I'm behind on all fronts.
Shearwater: I'll be posting today, and am fine with our being acquainted. What kind of general impression would Schist have formed of him from their stint sailing together?
Shearwater
He is a good-natured fellow with an extremely positive outlook on life. Quite level-headed and practical in most cases, but always willing to help others, even if it means putting himself at risk. So in short, not your typical pirate or smuggler. I imagine that even if the other members of the crew were somehow repulsed by Schist (either due to his looks or his personality), Shearwater would have made it his mission to be nice to him, even at the risk of becoming unpopular by association. He is kind of freaky looking himself, so there might be some kinship there.
As for his religion, Shearwater doesn't make a huge deal out of it (and he certainly doesn't seek to convert anybody) but it comes up often enough that Schist would be aware of who he worships and the general extent of his powers.
Kwesi Akerele
Awkward and testy meeting sounds perfect, Dima! I'll respond appropriately later. :)
Malorrem Dovar
Sleep was glorious. I feel like people again. And wow the lengths of those posts. I am gonna start on my joining the wonderful story :) I also like the songs!
GM Wicked
Wow, great start everyone! It's so nice when the players take the story into their own hands and run with it, especially when it's a group of such good writers! I'll have to sit down in a while and compile a list of all these NPCs and relationships.
GM Wicked
I managed to create a rough compilation of NPCs over in the Campaign tab, as well as some additional info. I've run out of time now, but will try to get a post in tonight!
Kwesi Akerele
Hopefully I'll have another response post in by this afternoon, too. Busy-ness happened.
Malorrem Dovar
No big deal my friend. Life sucks cause it gets busy. Oh and supposedly I should be getting bad weather, though is it clear now, so if I vanish that means I have lost power.
Schist Goldcoal
I'm loving your posts, Wicked. Such great writing. I don't often have to look up words, but you've been challenging me. Case in point: curtilage! Never heard of it before. A synonym for 'grounds'? But used here, perhaps, because 'grounds' would mislead the reader into thinking of land, whereas curtilage more accurately represents the boardwalk or encircling veranda around the property?
GM Wicked
Thanks!! Honestly I'm just trying to keep up with the rest of you.
You're correct! I learned the word through law, describing the area outside the home in which the occupant still maintains an expectation of privacy, even in those areas not technically part of the "house." It typically includes things like porches, fixtures, and enclosed spaces like detached garages.
BTW if I didn't already say, we'll treat your water blast like hydrokinetics, avoiding the harsh underwater penalties. I think it's so much like Kwesi's ability that even if RAW it should suffer terribly underwater, RAI it just feels wrong to make it do so.
Malorrem Dovar
I will second that I am loving the posts. And I love learning new things and that is a word I had not heard before.
