Lists and Wishlists

Today I get to mark two items off my todo list: Lists and wishlists.

Wishlists

Wishlists allow you to track products you'd like to buy, or—if you make a wishlist public—to have others buy for you.

To add products to a wishlist, go to that product's page, then click the "List This Product" link just below the "Add to Cart" button. When you add an item, you can specify the quantity you want, and add comments.

If you want people to be able to buy things for you from your wishlist, be sure to specify a shipping address. This address is only visible to you—it shows as "So-and-so's Address" on the purchaser's order confirmation page and order history. To preserve privacy, shipments to wishlist addresses are not trackable even if the purchaser selects UPS as a shipping method. If you don't select an address for your wishlist, purchasers will need to deliver those products themselves.

In addition to keeping track of how many you want of a particular product, wishlists also keep track of how many were purchased from paizo.com. If someone buys you something on your wishlist from your friendly local game store, you can adjust the quantity received for that item yourself. If you add an item to your cart from someone's wishlist and that item gets purchased by someone else before you check out, we'll highlight that product in your cart so you know it might not be wanted anymore.

By default, new wishlists are visible to everyone, but you can edit your wishlist to make it private. To make your wishlist easier for others to find, fill in the "full name" field in your profile. (Click your name at the top of the page where it says "Welcome, your name" to get to your profile.) There's a new "wishlists" option in the search box.

You can have more than one wishlist, and you can move items between lists by editing the list. You can also add a description for your wishlist (wishlist descriptions and item comments can include standard messageboards BBCode markup). If you don't want a particular wishlist anymore, edit that list and click the "Delete This List" button.

Each wishlist has an RSS feed so people can be notified when it's updated, and there's an RSS feed for your wishlists page so people can find out when you create a new list.

Lists

Lists work pretty much the same as wishlists, except you can't specify quantities wanted and there's no shipping address. But you're not just limited to products. Lists allow you to track products, product categories, blog entries, messageboard forums, threads, posts, and even other lists.

To add a product category to a list, click the "List This Page" link at the top of the page (next to the RSS feeds). Forums and threads have a "List This Forum" and "List This Thread" link. Messageboard posts can be added to a list by clicking the "List" link (next to the "Flag" link). Blog entries have a "List This Entry" link alongside their tags.

I'm really excited about the possibilities offered by lists, and Lisa's come up with a great one to launch this new feature: Lisa Stevens' items used in her Burnt Offerings game sessions.

In the future we'll make lists more discoverable, but for now, if you've made a list you think others will like, add a link to your list in this thread. (Don't use the "see what others see" link, just click on the name of your list and copy the URL from your address bar.)

Let the lists begin!

Many thanks, Gary. The fulfillment was even better than the anticipation (and I did some serious anticipating!).

You know what they say about gift horses, but...

It would be really great if there were the ability to move items quickly from a shopping cart / "save for later" list to a wishlist. Also, if I click "done with this list" will I no longer be able to add things to that wishlist?

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Hmm. That's probably a good idea.

Clicking "done with this list" just removes it from the ListMaker box in the sidebar. You can always add and remove items from a list or wishlist.

Dark Archive

I've just added 19 items to a wishlist, here are a couple of comments.

1) It would be nice to be able to add products to a list from the category listing pages, rather than having to go into every single product description page....Although this is less painful with tabbed browsers, and if you implemented Yoda's idea, that would also work as a workaround.

2) It would be nice to be able to add both print and pdf editions of an item to a list, as it is, listing print, removes the ability to add pdf.

Otherwise, me likey!

Ho do you set an address for a wishlist?

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Click on the name of your wishlist, then click the "Select a shipping address so people can send items directly to you" link.

Great job getting this out there. I'll be creating my wishlist soon so I can direct friends and family to it for upcoming birthdays and events.

I do have a question though, is there a way to:

a) let people buy things from the wishlish, but send to themselves so that they can wrap as a gift and give in person?

b) specify that if someone buys from the wishlist to send directly to me, have those items combined with existing shipments to reduce shipping costs? It's great that I can do that with my own orders, but hope that others can do with a wishlist.

Yes, during checkout the purchaser can select either the address you've assigned to the wishlist or their own address.

Purchases sent to your wishlist address are marked as gifts, and we don't combine gift shipments with other shipments.

Great addition Gary! I have spread the word in the Twitterverse. Stuff like this is why Paizo rocks!

I've been waiting for something like this for almost two years and now I'm going to put it to good use.

Hazzah!

Sweet!

The Lists feature seems like a pretty handy way to keep track of threads you like to check on, especially threads that may drop off your Recent Posts. It's a little strange to click on "Wishlists" to access messageboard threads, so I wonder if it makes more sense to link Lists and Wishlists separately. I guess "Wishlists" are more familiar to people than "Lists" and people are not likely to look for a wishlist within a feature named "Lists".

Is "Done With This List" the same button that is now labeled "Delete This List"? If so, the new label is more clear :)

Nice features.

Gary - A couple of lists that would be REALLY useful to the community & Paizo ...

1) Out-of-Print Flip Mats

2) Out-of-Print Map Packs

3) Out-of-Print ???

Now that OoP materials have been pulled from the store, these lists would serve two purposes. First, they would allow collectors/traders a reference for OoP materials they find. Second, it would allow the community to request an OoP product go back into production. Paizo could set a pre-order threshold (maybe public/maybe not) for each OoP item (ie. Map Pack: Village) and once enough people add it to their cart from the list, a print run is set.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Well, I could make a list like that, but it would look empty to you because products that have been removed from the store also don't show up on lists or wishlists. (Which means that if you add a product to a wishlist and it later gets removed from the store it will disappear off your list.)

It would be nice to have out of print items show on lists, but read "out of print", similar to how Amazon wishlists work. It's still handy to refer to when scouring ebay or used book stores for items.

I've got a stupid question: how do you edit your lists, add comments, etc? I can't seem to find the links/buttons for these features.

Also, when viewing my lists it looks like the far right part of the screen is cut off, but no horizontal scroll bar appears to scroll to the right.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Hmm. Maybe that missing scroll bar is part of the problem for you. Click on the list you want to edit, there should be an edit button on the far right.

I've replied to this in a new thread here, because I didn't want to take this thread off topic.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here is a couple of ideas
how about an electronic tool box, like the old 3.5 e-tools? and what about converting Dragonlance stuff?

Unless Wizards of the Coast licenses Paizo to convert Dragonlance "stuff" they can't. Either way, it's not going to happen since Wizards of the Coast is only interested in 4th edition, not 3rd.

As for the "electronic toolbox" try PCGen. It's free and Pathfinder compatible.

This is a wonderful idea, many thanks! I'm forever finding cool things to buy that I don't want to purchase right now, it's super convenient to be able to keep a list together of everything that I'm interested in. Plus its nice to be able to point my non-roleplaying friends & family to a wishlist they can get me gifts from. :D

Edit: Also, the wishlist goblin is disturbingly cute! I'd buy her a kitten, but I'm worried my house would be burnt down as a thank you...

I borrowed that artwork from one of Crystal Frasier's Paizo Blog posts (which actually had nothing whatsoever to do with wishlists). All of her blogs to date have similarly cute li'l goblin illustrations.

I have the same problem: no horizontal scroll bar, and I can't see any buttons off to the right. Changing the screen resolution doesn't seem to help, either.

Are you by any chance using Opera?

Well, you should actually only have a scroll bar if you've set your window to be really narrow. But you should have an edit button.

Do you get an edit button if you use a different browser?

I have no problem with Firefox.

When I use IE8 at 100% zoom level, I can now see half of an edit button off to the right hand side (it wasn't there before I edited the name of my list in Firefox). When I zoom out to see the whole button it disappears. Weird.

Anyhow, it's not a problem for me but I'm sure you want to fix it.

EDIT: Now half a button is showing up at any zoom level.
EDIT: Now it's not again. Weird.

I only have the one browser: IE 8. No amount of fiddling with View > Zoom, View > Text Size or changing resolution via the Control Panel gets me even half an edit button.

My cat *ahem* "assisted" me to create an unwanted second Wish List, which I cannot delete.

Hello Garry

I was wanting to build a list of Australian Paizonians using the profiles. Is it possible to make profiles listable.

I was going to create the list in response to another user asking if there were other players in Sydney.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Right now you can't add user profiles to lists, but something along those lines is planned for sometime in the future.

Gary Teter wrote:

Thanks for the prompt reply Gary, I hope Lisa and Vic appreciate your eyebally tentacleness.

Any chance we can have an option to remove the "tutorial" from the top of our list view? It's helpful when you are just figuring out what the list does, but once you know what you're doing, it just wastes space and bandwidth — particularly if you are accessing your lists for PbP updates on your cell phone.

Also, it would be nice if each list item had a link to go to the most recent post even when there are no new items to show.

Silver Crusade

I have my own wish list for the List function.

I think it's great, and I'm sure you know so much more could be done with it if you had the resources and time...

My one wish for the List is that it show the last post date on the messageboard items on the list, instead of (or as well as) the date listed there, which is (I believe) the post creation date.

This would allow me to look at all the threads I am following and immediately see if any recent posts have been made to them. As I said, you could do more, such as highlight any in the list that are unread, send email updates, etc. But just having the last-post-date would be a great start.

I'm sure you know the site is often very slow, and that you're already working on it....

Thanks for a great website!
Mike

Liberty's Edge

I love this feature. I have one public wishlist and two private lists so far. However, I have one rather silly and somewhat stupid question. How are other people supposed to find my wishlist? For the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

If you fill in the "full name" field on your profile page that should get your lists to show up for anybody searching for your name. However I just checked and it looks like that isn't working the way it should.

For now, the best way is to email a link to your wishlist.

I like having a wishlist so others can see what I want and I can keep track of items I want. But the process seems very complicated on getting an item to a wishlist. I can click on a link to add something to my cart, why can't their be a link that says "Add to Wishlist" that I can click on? I don't want to go through steps to get an item on my wishlist, I want it to scream at me that this is the link to click on to get an item to my wishlist.

Lantern Lodge

There should be a little link when you are looking on the product page that says "List This Product". It should be under the add to cart stuff and above the twitter/facebook/email icons.

Gary did just mention that the link will not be there if you are not logged in.

in my wishlist is for the half-dragons can be usa as pc race to pick from as started race and dump-down a little too.

I had a wishlist. It was as complete as I could make it after going through tens of thousands of products and only adding items I would truly want. I spent several days checking and comparing products until I had finished making the list. Now it is gone, no notice, no explanation, no excuse acceptable.

Paizo Employee PostMonster General

taulsk, please check your email.

Wishlist has been mostly restored. I honestly did not expect this to be possible. Thank you.

Scarab Sages

Where could a person suggest a new product or a revision of an old 3.5 book that you would do?
