Hey everybody,

I'm sorry for going missing on you. It's been a very hectic couple of weeks. At work we had two back to back short notice and short deadline extra projects added on top of our regular work. With what free time I've had I really needed to do other things than sit in front of a computer yet more.

Things should be getting back to normal now, and I'll be catching up on reading up to date on posts and posting myself. Within a day or two I should be all caught up and back in the flow.

Hi everyone, very sorry for the absence. Work has been very heavy and I really needed the long weekend to do things other than the stuff I usually do.

I'll get caught up and post tomorrow or the next day.

"I'd suggest we do it first thing in the morning. After closing might be alright, but probably less ideal. Between patrons wanting their drinks served and those that have already had too many, things could get complicated of there are too many people around when we take him."

Veda had long figured Razelago to be something other than human, but ew, damn, that's nasty!

Since touching fire is generally a poor idea, Veda lets several others proceed before her to see how it goes. Since none of them seem too badly affected, She steps forward to touch the ember as well.

"I swear my absolute allegiance to Archbaron Darellus Fex, Her Infernal Majestrix Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune, and the Empire of Cheliax."

She says the words in a rote manner, showing neither particular interest or emotion. Afterward she looks at her hand, mostly to decide whether it will need a healing salve soon or it can wait a while.

I think Cheliax is "under the protection of" Asmodeus. Each ruler in turn has a contract with Asmodeus, but does not head the church.

Veda has remained silent and observed until this time.

Less money in this deal for sure. But it would be stupid to think that kind of pay was going to last forever. Instead we get reliable, no more wondering if each job is the last.

"Sure."

Veda decides to coattail Jerax.

"Yeah, if we were on retainer we could do this full-time. Good work. I could quit my day job for it. Archbaron Sir."

Can't hurt to be sweet about asking...

I think things are running very smoothly with this game from your end Snowheart. No complaints or suggestions.

Most of my trouble is my own. Partially it's being overburdened at work, which cuts into time, and sometimes energy for posting.

The bigger thing for me is that I haven't quite gotten inside Veda's head so far. It's early still but posts are a bit difficult because I'm usually pretty quick to figure out how a character will act or what they will say in a situation, but I don't have it yet in this case.

I think the evil part is what's giving me problems. It's harder to work with than good or neutral.

Female Changeling Alchemist (Vivisectionist / Chirurgeon) 2 | HP: 17/17 | AC: 17 (T: 13, F: 14) | CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | F: +4, R: +7, W: +0 | Init: +3 | Perc: +5, SM: +0 | Speed 30'

Although it takes second, Veda figures out Cimri's reference. Although she doesn't answer her directly, it does seem to calm her down a little. She regains her poise.

Yeah, let's whether you can pass a test Ashel.

Veda presses up against the cell bars holding onto them with her hands. She pushes her face right in between the bars she's holding, as close as she can get without trying to force her head through into the cell.

Her voice is overly sweet and mocking.

"Well, I can say this about corpses Ashel. At least they get stiff for a while. That's more than can be said for the men in this sad little dump of a town. Maybe I'm better off. Huh Ashel? Can't offer better can you?"

Veda answers back with a double rude gesture. No point in letting a hand go unused.

"Well that's the thing isn't it Ashel? I always was a creepy lil' thing wasn't I? You think I never caught on to what people think?"

Veda advances on the cell, her voice rising angrily and looking like she might go at the man through the bars.

"Let me ask you, when did my neighbors ever NOT turn their backs on me? You F+*%!"

Veda snorts mirthfully at the prisoners. "Jail? Prison?"

She makes a mock-exaggerated attempt to locate a dictionary, looking all around the place including up at the ceiling.

"Sorry, I just don't know the difference. New at the job you see. Don't really have a good handle on the finer points of it."

Sighing and shrugging in pantomimed embarrassment she tells them helplessly "You'll just have to to be patient as we figure things out, we're all in this together you know. I guess you're in whatever we say you're in until we know better. Har har!"

Veda finds a place to get comfortable and settles in.

Right, HP is always rounded up. Generally other rolls round down. For example average HP by level for a D6 class would be 3.5 HP, which will become 4.

However using a two handed weapon with a 13 strength yields a damage bonus of 1.5, which will be rounded down to 1 rather than up to 2.

Chirurgeon:
Infused Curative: At 2nd level, a chirurgeon’s extracts of cure spells automatically act as infusions, and can be used by non-alchemists. When a chirurgeon prepares his extracts, he may choose to render any or all of his infused curatives inert and prepare other extracts to replace them (unlike infusions, which continue to occupy the alchemist’s daily extract slots until consumed or used). This ability replaces poison use.

Vivisectionist:
Torturer’s Eye: At 2nd level, a vivisectionist adds Deathwatch to his formula book as a 1st-level extract.

Also, in case people are starting to wonder at this point, Veda is thoroughly apolitical. This is very much a job to her. She totally does see Asmodeans as mostly 'leg humpers' who are trying to ingratiate themselves to superiors so they can slither up the hierarchy.

Veda is much more a character in the Amos Burton or Bronn mold. She's only mildly evil (at this point at least), mostly because she has sociopathic tendencies. She's lawful not because of affirmative beliefs, but due to certain weaknesses.

Oh, Veda doesn't 'get' or 'grow' claws. They're always there. She's just very careful to disguise them as well as possible by keeping them immaculately manicured and polished. I have a Psychic Detective Investigator in War for the Crown and that's how we've played it. Some spells like Telempathic Projection, which she has used to buff allies in social portions of the game, become almost impossible to use otherwise.

While she can't stand right there beside someone while using it, as long as she's subtle in her behavior there are no manifestations that signal a spell has been used. Mostly that means finding a quiet spot where she's not engaged with bystanders so she can concentrate on the target without being closely scrutinized during the casting.

It preserves the ability to use mind affecting spells without detection in crowded conditions, but it can't be done on the fly. The burden shifts from hiding an effect to having to prepare the right circumstances before casting.

Veda watches Lily take off as she helps wrangle prisoners.

Huh, she's awfully eager...

When Jerax raises the question of the two bodies Veda has the answer.

"As it happens I know just the place. We can drop them off on our way."

Veda takes a couple of bits of paper and writes the names of the deceased on them. She then stuffs the correct name into the clothes of the deceased.

"Alright, we can deliver them and then get back to the other stuff."

She leads the group to her house. Although she doesn't volunteer to help carry a body, she'll do so if needed. At her house she directs the bodies to be dropped outside the door. She gives the door a solid thumping with her fist and yells inside.

"Dad! Delivery outside! Police work! Send the bill to the Sheriff's Office! See you at dinnertime!"

Turning around she asks the others "Alright which next? Jail or notices?"

Sorry for being so slow!

I missed this from a while back. Sorry Lily!

Earlier:
Veda doesn't immediately pick up on Lily's line of questioning. "I didn't throw a punch, I threw a... Oh!" Veda shakes her head, a little embarrassed. "That's not what you meant."

She pulls out a small stoppered bottle and holds it up.

"It's this. It's a sort of 'pick me up' I mix together. It's really gets me going. Kinda hard to describe what it feels like. It's feels like power and ecstasy exploding inside my body like my skin won't be able to hold it in." Veda's excited description trails off for a loss of adequate words. After a pause she sums up. "It's better than the best sex you've ever had. Trust me."

Veda's smile and the light in her eyes shows Lily she isn't just bragging. Veda sincerely believes it.

Veda really didn't think it would come to this.

From her place outside Veda watches Rhona leave without comment. She doesn't really care one way or another about how Rhona feels, but she sees some value in letting things move onward as smoothly and quietly as possible.

That's why she dislikes Ameliya's comment. Nobody in town seriously believes Rhona wasn't good at her job. Ameliya's words to the contrary make the whole thing seem political which isn't helpful. Veda gets that the mice are always glad to see the cat go, but theres always another cat.

She presumes there will be another sheriff soon enough, and the reason for the new sheriff is they'll take a hard line on any hint of sympathy for the rebellion. That's what the pairing of Rhona's removal and the notices they're to nail up suggest. Fair enough, but Cimri's feeling about Rhona aside, the new sheriff could still be a disadvantage to them simply because the person is an unknown factor. Rhona could be handled, who knows about he new sheriff?

Besides, if this political motive is laid bare the people of Longacre are less likely to see some 'business as usual' reasons for removing Rhona. They will be more agitated in many cases. It's something that might motivate people, possibly strengthen support for the rebellion.

Veda thinks it's hard to say one way or another, but if Longacre's citizenry feels wounded by Rhona's removal, there's no reason to poke the wound with a stick for petty personal satisfaction.

Veda fails to notice the trouble brewing inside the sheriff's office.

As she walks to the Ash House the next morning Veda resolves to do things differently today. Cimri is busy with other people, so she'll not think about her at all.

She can do whatever she likes, none of my business. I won't care about any of that anymore. I've got my own things to worry about."

Veda decides she should try to branch out herself, today she'll talk to the other people instead of Cimri. The Asmodeans don't suit her well. They're way to satisfied with themselves, pompous and oily in their in their eagerness to leg-hump their way up that chain of command. Madam Ameliya seems okay in some ways, but she's too intimidating. Veda can only imagine the Lady laughing at someone like her as soon as her back was turned.

The halfling seems alright, and Lily. I'll hang around with them today."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Veda is surprised by the notices only in that they make some big moves very quickly. Razelago's connection to the Archbaron was already the more likely of the two possibilities concerning him Veda had settled on. If he wasn't doing the Archbaron's bidding, he could only be an agent provocateur for the rebellion. But it didn't seem their way, and Razelago just didn't seem their guy.

During the discussion of posting the fliers and delivering the letter to the Sheriff, Veda can feel some undercurrents but can't put her finger on what exactly is shifting. She can read Cimri well enough to know she's less comfortable today than yesterday in her dealings with Razelago, but that could just be about the move against the Sheriff. It is a deeply personal subject to her after all.

Veda's inclination is to follow after Cimri when she leaves the room early. But, she stands firm, adhering to her earlier vow. She's glad she did. Razelago's comments about Cimri are really something to chew on. Maybe there will be a reason to talk to Cimri later after all.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Veda really preferred the idea of splitting up, with some people posting fliers and some delivering the letter. She's rather be nailing up fliers. But she settles for staying at the back of the crowd when they all go to the Sheriff's office together. She keeps her mouth shut to compensate for her height not letting her hide very well by staying in back.

This will take some thought. I'll submit this as a placeholder but I might yet find a slightly better match.

Veda does have one thing to say to Slenk before she goes though.

"Nah, we do nothing about it at all. You gotta think in small town terms. Just let it marinade for a while and people will move onto the next to do about nothing. Doing something is gonna require someone else to do something. You gotta learn to let the little things sink into the muck of lingering suspicions and bad feelings that give this place it's particular aroma. It'll all just become part of the background."

Oh barf! Not if Veda can help it!

Cimri's post-brawl behavior mostly baffles Veda. She offers up her view on things after whatever-the-creep-behind-curtain-is turns out to be gone.

"I'm not getting it Cimri, why is this bothering you so much? I mean seriously, who else would your aunt think it might be aside from us? Louslik saying anything more than absolutely nothing is going to point our way as least a little. She might be bothersome but she's not daft."

But otherwise Veda just lets it go. She's already said her piece on Cimri and Jerax (Ugh! GAG!) and it seems to have made no difference.

Veda''s beginning to think Cimri doesn't listen too well. She's also more erratic than Veda had noticed, or had the chance to notice, before.

She might not be thinking very much about things ahead of time, or have any good idea about what to do about what.

All this depresses Veda some, and she decides to call it a night, heading home.

Sense Motive (Is Cimri in her right mind?): 1d20 ⇒ 20

Sigh, and that's where all my good rolls go, used on things that don't need them. That Sense Motive attempt was more or less a joke. :p

"Well Slenk, I wasn't able to finish eating. Are you offering to fix that?"

Veda says it with sincerity on the long shot chance the halfling might accommodate her. But she's joking.

Veda lets the men pass. No need to keep kicking on them, point made.

She giggles at Ameliya's question.

"Nothing that won't be forgiven and forgotten tomorrow."

Oh wow! I forgot we were using Elephant in the Room! Not that it matters in the brawl, throwing the bowl was by far the most fun option.

But! I was tinkering last night with Veda's advancement and was assuming she was going to have to spend feats on dex combat. With that out of the way, I would like to throw out a question in case anyone might have some advice.

I've been thinking about taking a 1 level monk (or brawler?) dip a little later to pick up Improved Unarmed Strike. I'd also pick up Feral Combat Training so I could use combat style feats. Anyone know their way around the style feats and have any suggestions for something that will work well with natural weapons and sneak attack?

I'm thinking Kirin Style looks pretty good....

Veda starts sauntering toward the door. Knowing it would be wrong to leave with one of Bolgart's bowls, she throws it to smash it into the back of the head of the man confronting Jerax as she passes by.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Damage: 1d2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

I believe I have the modifiers right. Veda has the Throw Anything feat so no penalty for improvised weapon, just straight dex to hit. +2 strength to the damage and 1d2 for small item? I don't think I can get sneak attack damage on it...

Veda fills Cimri in on developments.

"Bolgart's on his way. It's about time to go."

She then steps back. While holding her bowl in one hand, Veda take out a small flask and downs its contents.

I thought the drunken lout would crumble under the gaze of a pissed off 6'8" tiefling, but nope these folk wanna fight. And Jerax was defending Veda's friend, Cimri.

Maybe the tiefling needs to learn something about taking more care to be sure he can finish what he starts.

Cimri didn't need defending until Jerax escalated. Veda isn't getting paid to throw in on fights that didn't need to happen until Jerax decided showing off was an ace strategy.

Besides, Veda might not be pissed off at Cimri anymore, but that doesn't mean she isn't still jealous of Jerax. ;)

Veda tries to ignore the lout who approaches the table, and is doing an excellent job of doggedly sticking to finishing her meal. But when the tiefling stands up and starts shouting too, she has to take action.

She picks up her bowl of stew and slides out of the way so she can continue eating in peace.

Everybody just HAS to be an a$@*+@& don't they? I'm off work and didn't ask for this crap. Maybe the tiefling needs to learn something about taking more care to be sure he can finish what he starts.
