All I am saying here is even if your characters did not know what to do next about this conundrum, their lives would go on, and they would not sit around waiting for the next plot advancement event to take place, would they?* So what would they do? Would they leave? Would they seek advice somewhere else? Would they give up? Would they seek employment around Grimmsgate? Would they run for office and become sheriffs of Grimmsgate? Would they fund an Adventuring Company and hire out as bodyguards for eventual caravans? All these are valid actions that you can take.[/i]

Sly would run for office. Poacher turned gamekeeper :)

I'll get Darcy converted over to Bloatfinder (At least Core only makes it playable :-)) this weekend. Still trying to decide if she's a fighter / rogue... or a Rogue fighter, or just a Rogue or just a fighter. I was thinking a strangely constructed Monk... but keeping her with a low WIS, and CHA isn't really coming together yet.
With a 20 point buy, I guess you don’t NEED to have low Wis or Cha? ;)
I know. I just kind of like her that way. I can do a 9 in both, and perhaps her development as a character will increase them.

Gotta agree Scan - I've kept Sly with 7 CHA and 9 CON as I want him unlikeable and reflect the fact his Constitution is shot from imbibing poisons... Ended up having to drop 17 on 18 DEX just to chew up the build points :S

@OSGMO: Done. 1HP it is

Sly looks at his companions, equally browbeaten or barely breathing.

"I apologise friends. I fear my actions have sealed our fates... However should we, by some twist of fate, escape the gallows-jig I will ensure proper recompense is given to you both."

20 point Sly Basterd has been generated. Quicker, Smarter, just as unapologetically unlikeable.

Inside their makeshift gaol, Slygol sits quietly... smiling.

Perception (Listening if there are any guards): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly as he stands is essentially a 7 point buy lol, so 15 will make him super Sly :)

Was waiting to see if Sly's words had any other effect on the group or peasant mob... Seems not.

Eyes affixed on the deputy, a smirking Sly unbuckles his weapons belt and places it on the ground.

"Will be interested to see how this all plays out... There. All surrendered for you. You and the rabble get to be all tough now..."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

At the mention of the widow, Sly smirks and shrugs;

"By all means go inform the good Widow she is free of her husbands shackles. I am sure she will be beside herself with grief... Oh and while you're at it give her back the coin that sits under that dead basterd's tongue. Tell her it was money well spent."

When Woy suggests trial by combat, the assassin's rictus expression widens;

"Trial by combat is a justified means to ascertain guilt or innocence. Especially where the law is no longer... able or willing to be enforced. I've seen nobles in civilised places like Troye settle judicial disputes betwixt champions. In my line of business it pays to know what's what in such matters."

As he speaks his hands remain gently poised o'er pommel of dirk and shortblade. His eyes back to the surviving deputy when he says willing.

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly's smirk widens at the priests words;

"Lay down our arms? I think not. Turn ourselves over to your provincial sh1tehole justice? You have no Shire-Reeve... The deputy there is complicate in Dreng's corruption, so whose justice? I'll pass... As for who I am to take the life of another... Lets just say we all our callings Pater. Some guide the flock. Others cull the wolves."

The assassin pauses, the nods towards the downed Ārwulf;

"Tend to him and I'll honour your request. I want his voice heard in this clamour of the witless and worthy..."

He rests his hands upon the pommel of his belted daggers.

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly keeps his cold stare affixed on the Deputy;

"Lies eh? Escorting us for what was it? Vagabonding and loitering... Nothing to do with the good sheriff's dealings eh?"

He pauses, sneering smile growing wider;

"His throat was indeed opened. He felled our friend... We fought. Pater - was it not you who said Dreng was a brute, who cowed his wife and was unsavoury? He got his. I cut his throat and his shadow both: Umbra mortis nihil timet malum."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly pays the holy man equally no heed as he tends to the dead sheriff. Instead the assassin affixes his hard gaze upon the still living deputy;

"Murderers you say? We defended ourselves after exposing the Shire-Reeve's corruption! No we are no murderers... Were we so, you would not be breathing to bleat your lies... Were we so you would be endangering yourself with such open accusations... And as murderers we would be compelled to find you and butcher you in your home..."

His rictus smile flashes momentarily. before faux stoicism is returned.

"... but we are not such men... Lucky for you."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Ah if Ārwulf is still ko'd then let's leave him on the ground - safer and looks more sympathetic.

Sly looks down at his fallen comrade with mock concern as the clamor of a village approaches...

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Actually makes sense to stay with the bodies. Deputy Lucky doesn't know what befell the Sheriff as he bolted before the coup de grace... besides we we're acting in self-defence. Sheriff didn't like that we had questioned his wife... flew off the handle and the big lads cleaned house.

Sly eyes both men as he helps Ārwulf stand;

"Right lads. Let's face the music. We acted in self-defence. Accused the Sheriff of taking coin from Rayne as per his wife's account. He flew into a rage and attacked. You boys dealt with it... at some cost. Make sense?"

He eyes the huge warrior with a hard smile;

"Woy - you understand big lad? The Sheriff. Attacked us. First."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Dunno - was mulling the Sheriff's wife widow's place, but too many eyes most likely. Waiting for the others possibly? Lots of ideas - none of which will win hearts and minds of the Grimmsgate folkels... Ārwulf needs healing - wether its coerced or not doesn't matter to Sly. If the good Pater won't give it willingly I've some thoughts on how to convince him.

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly slips the dagger free from the dead man's boot and belts it alongside his blades.

He then moves to heft Ārwulf to his feet;

"In a past life I'd have left you to take the ire of the villagers. Not now... I'm a better man... with a better shadow..."

The assassin smiles to himself.

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly watches the man expire, his smile rictus as he places the widow's coin under the dead shire-reeves tongue as he mutters an oath:

"Take his shadow. Gift the coin. A transaction complete."

The assassin nods appreciatively as Woy shows keen direction in stripping the still warm body of anything of value.

"We are being watched Big Lad. Best we grab what we've earned and get Ārwulf up. I've seen the type of justice served in these rural sh1te holes before..."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Kneeling by the downed shire-reeve Sly stays the big man's hand with a rueful smile;

"Too late big lad. This one's gone..."

(Unless stopped by Woy) He then slips his shorter blade across the lawman's throat...

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly watches the deputy bolt with a bemused look upon his sallow face.

As Woy tends to Ārwulf the lanky assassin moves to where the Sheriff lies. He sheaths his longer blade, then kneels beside the downed lawman.

Is the Sheriff dead or just mortally wounded GM?

Seeing one of his meatshields brave companions get dropped spurs Sly into action. He brings both of his blades to bear on the Sheriff, attempting to gut the lawman;

Shortsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Well 2024 you bode well...
Dagger, Off-Hand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Dagger Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Makes sense. Noted on the ranges...

Seeing things get messy Sly hefts both blades and moves toward the Shire-reeve to even things up in melee...

Draws blades as above and moves into the danger zone

PF1 is an old coat for me chief os no issues pulling that one on. Core is fine, but honestly think the strength of PF1 is its variety... and I love traits lol. Sly will be a Rogue working to Assassin prestige class.

Apologies - was convinced I'd posted in the fight - will get on that.

Still wearing his rictus smile Sly draws another dagger and his short sword.

"Deals? We have made many deals... Others made are more... binding..."

OSGMO - Know I can draw and move, but presuming drawing 2 weapons and moving is a stretch?

At the edge of the village Sly halts, then turns to the Sheriff;

"I would say its been a pleasure, but your little arse-of the-world village isn't even worth burning down... though my friend here might disagree. Least your wildlife is interesting..."

He nods to himself, cruel grin widening as he surreptitiously attempts to draw a dagger...

Slight of Hand?: 1d20 ⇒ 2 (baws...)

"Foxes, two headed calves... oh and Squirrel!"

Regardless @ the mention of fluffy tailed rodents Sly will attempt to throw aforementioned dagger at the lunk with the crossbow

Attack: Dagger (Thrown) @ Crossbowman: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage (P): 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly raises his hands in mock defence;

"Don't shiv the messenger Mr Shire-Reeve! We we're sent, so we came. You know our Boss - not a man to trifle with..."

He sighs, and looks to the edge of the village;

"Best we do this nice and quite like. Don't want the tattlers dining out. Come on lads... Let the good Shire-Reeve an' his hencheejits march us back empty handed..."

The assassin claps the board shoulders of his companions, then trudges reluctantly to the outskirts of the village, mindful of making a show of dragging his heels but keeping the Sheriff and his men close.

Am presuming they'll escort out us out of the village? Going to let Ārwulf and/or Woy chime in before we put Operation: Squirrel into action...

At the Sheriff's hail Sly's smile widens, and he seems, like the two warriors beside him, unphased by the implication of violence;

"Well met Shire-Reeve. We're Rayne's men, so lower that flatbow eh? Been sent into town for supplies... odd stuff at that... We was told you would handle any credit we needed..."

The assassin's long fingers tap the twin pommels as his waist - sword and dagger.

"The Boss don't like to be kept waiting. Says he needs what he needs quick sharpish..."

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Slygol eyes the incoming trio and smirks;

"Best we wait. See what's what and whose who."

Sly accepts the coin, marking it with his dagger point as he turns toward Woy with a wicked grin;

"Woy lad... You are the storm..."

Clapping the big man's meaty shoulder he wanders to where Ārwulf stands vigil;

"So Chief. Got some interesting details. Also got a little sideline..."

The assassin displays the marked gold coin to the big warrior;

"...Her husband's now a marked man as we say in the trade."

Slygol pockets the scoured coin with a shrug and a hard smile.

Sly smiles knowingly;

"Of course we are not here to cause you trouble. Quite the contrary..."

He fetches a gold coin from his belt and hands it to the woman;

"Speaking of payments. For your time and words..."

The assassin pauses, leaning in closer, rictus smile hardening;

"The Pater mentioned your husband is ill-tempered. Know that you can be released from his shadow. All it would cost... A single. Gold. Coin..."

Slygol steps back head bowed; his hand that offered the coin now inverted to potentially receive one.

Sly smiles, not a warm one, but a hard, rictus grin;

Excellent. Shadows are revealed in the light.

"North ravine you say... If we can press you further... Where did your husband meet this man? Was he sought out or met by happenstance?"

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

"The Good Pater mentioned you had seen a man speaking with your husband. A tall, gaunt man with deepset facial features and a pale complexion yes? Middle aged, with black hair and a fine trimmed black beard?"

The assassin preempts the woman's question;

"We have an interest in this man... You need not know why, other than it is justified. We humbly need to know what you know of him... Know we act with the Pater's blessing and cannot leave without the knowledge we seek..."

Dice if Needbe:

Sly nods slowly, eyes cast to his boots;

"We do. My friend and I were... men of ill repute. The good Pater saved us."

He smiles wistfully;

"He personally delivered me from the... shadows... and into the light. He is a saint in my eyes."

The assassin pauses, eyes narrowing;

"May we speak more frankly?"

(Not sure if you need any rolls from me OSGMO? Assassins are "adept at information gathering & persuasion" according to OSR rules.)

Sly watches the exchange all the while wearing his the laconic smirk, which widens at Lewill's parting advice;

Rethink my ways!? I originally planned to the poison the wells and holy wine...

At Ārwulf's instructions he refocuses, nodding in agreement;

"We'll get right to it Chief. Big Lad... lets go."

The assassin meanders towards the cottage threshold, slipping a dagger free as he goes, before rapping its pommel against the door...

Slygol smirks and tips the nod toward Woy;

"Right then Big Lad. How about we see if we can't loosen her tongue, and see what she is hiding."

He pauses shooting a look toward Darcy and Lewill;

"If she runs to her husband then you two can scoop her up?"

Male Human Rogue 1 | HP 1/7 | AC 15 T 14 FF 11 CMD 15 | F-1, R+6, W+1 | Perc +5 | Init +4 | Move: 30ft. | Sneak Attack +1d6 | Conditions: Bound

Sly pauses, his smirk wavering momentarily;

"Agree. Not going back to the kirk... So some are watching the stone. Rest are buying pickling juice. I need to confirm what the Shire-Reeve's wife knows... If it's Rayne she saw."

He sighs;

"If time is of the essence, perhaps a more direct questions with the right... encouragement is required?"

The assassin shoots a look toward the group;

"Don't worry I won't kill her. Just threaten to kill her..."

Slygol notes the interplay between Ārwulf and Calhoun with interest. As the group send Darcy (or anyone else) to engage the Shire-Reeve's wife, he mutters a reminder;

"Check if the stranger she saw speaking to her husband matches Rayne... but best not mention my quarry by name."

Slygol mulls the discussion;

"We best keep an eye out for Rayne and his muscle also. Been told he's tall, gaunt man with deepset facial features and a pale complexion. Middle aged, with black hair and a fine trimmed black beard. No idea what he's telling folk he does for a living... but the reality won't be good."

He smirks;

"Not that I'm one to talk."

He finishes the last morsel of egg then looks to the others;

"So we find Yanissa see what she knows, then get the pickle juice for the stone. The old fart mentioned the Pebble. You lot been there? Inn or tavern?"

The lean assassin listens to Ãrwulf's rationale;

"Fair call. If Rayne has investigated without the Pater's knowledge then he'd have to be in with someone. This Shire-Reeve makes sense."

Slygol smiles at Lewill's passion;

"I'm not in the charitable business either. Reckon my paymaster is likely a wizard or a Guild fixer, but he revealed little."

Outside Sly begins to unpeel another boiled egg liberated from the church's bounty as he exited.

He returns Ārwulf's nod;

"So it won't surprise ye I'm not here to see the sights. Been tasked to find someone... fella named Rayne D’Anzeray who has sour connections to the Wizard's Academy. Tracked him to Endhome, then he hired muscle and headed here to Grimmsgate. He had some interest in the chapel, but if he did and came here already, then Old Father Honesty inside isn't letting on..."

The assassin flashes a hard smile;

"Hence my question 'bout your "employer", since you lot more than fit the bill on hired sellswords..."

Slygol takes a bite of the egg, then between swallows continues;

"Am guessing Rayne could be the stranger conversing with Shire-Reeve Dreng. So... while I prefer to work alone... if you're not his muscle and Dreng is in cahoots, then reckon I need your help to even the odds. I will help you lot in this "pickle the stone" quest and you help me in my job?"

Slygol takes in the info with a smirk and a nod;

"Oh you've given me all I need Pater. For that I thank you."

He then affixes the priest with a hard look;

"Purpose served I no longer need to suffer your sanctimonious ramblings and leave your hallowed hovel with my own Lady's wisdom: old sins have long shadows... You would do well to remember that."

The assassin turns and leaves, pausing to address the adventuring company;

"Should you still wish to work with me I'll be outside. I have some information that may prove useful to those that do."

When the Father mentions Sheriff Dreng and his meeting, Slygol's eyes narrow and harden as he mutters an aside;

"I would be happy to distract the Sheriff... so you all can question his spouse..."

He directs his thoughts at the Father;

"Tell me Pater. Does the good Sheriff have any vices? Does he work alone or with constables? I would hate to take up his valued time and leave the village in the grip of lawlessness in his absence..."

The assassin's cruel smile then returns;

"Tell his wife that the Mistress of Shadow can also grant her a divorce from his shade should she wish it... Let her grow anew."
