And if he lives if he's judged guilty he can spread the word. The surest way to keep a secret is to kill the other person keeping it. At most I can hope to slow the spread by impressing the need for silence upon those who would be jury, my people's safety must come first especially with something like this. We have gone many years simply trying to survive. And I felt my word would be good enough. But your words do reach me. But a true code of laws hasn't been written. Actually innocent until proven guilty is a more modern concept iirc. The previous rule was more along eye for an eye.

Sam's grief changed the man we once knew. It turned him into something else. Something we cannot afford to have among our people. Unlike the man who attacked his wife while drunk, Sam knowingly and purposefully murdered another man. We cannot afford to give him a chance to spill more of our people's blood.

I feel that such a force would play itself up in an attempt to inflame my paranoia, instead it uses the same tactics as I imagine Sam fell to. As to my guards, perhaps you would be willing to help me test them.

My training included spellwork. Though there are others better suited I am hardly unlearned. But this thing, it already attempts to seek out my weaknesses. It attempts to offer me back those I've lost. There's no telling how long it offered the same to Sam before he gave in. It's destruction would seem prudent.

To be fair he needed a compound that wouldn't dissolve in the water. There's a reason water's called the universal solvent. The disturbing part though is I think I could make a transceiver with the materials on the island. We all have. That's why we're all here. But it's so distant. So maybe another type of pain will do. 13 years ago I ripped myself away from my family to gain strength. My brother and sister think I'm dead. And it will stay that way. I left to gain strength to get revenge on the giants and I've become a monster. Spending the night outside of our sanctuary with no knowledge of the dangers that await, choosing to place yourself in more danger than necessary to exert your independence when our people need us, those are things you chose to do. You put your wants above the needs of our people, the people we grew with, the ones we survived with, the closest thing to family we have left.

You choose to be independent rather than to be depended on and eventually you will find a situation where you'll have no one at your back when it's needed. And since it pleases you so much, I'll choose my people over a dragon's snack. Perhaps when others choose to have your back, you will value them more. Rose moves towards the forest looking for the closest source of water to see who it has fared.
