I appreciate the transparency of this matter. It tells something about the community, although I still think that a person who votes for Pax Golgotha, but intends to play with Pax Aeternum with his main character, is breaking the rules. If there are such persons, they probably know who they are. Some personal judgement should be used in the case involved also.

It was also said that someone could trade their vote if they liked. Everyone who pledged at a qualifying level gets a vote. If they voted for TEO, Pax A, or T7V in the Paizo-board thread, they've spent it. If not, they can vote for whomever they like. There are a lot of unaffiliated players who haven't chosen or formed a guild, and if existing guilds want to buy their votes, they could.

Hey, Wizard101, a totally different game than this, has an awesome name creator too. First time I played it, I spent almost an hour going over the various name combos.

When I finally made a survivable storm mage, I called him Colin Storm, just so his battlecry when he brings up his Tempest spell was "I'm Colin the Storm!"

My niece showed me that game and I played it with her for a while. I miss that... ah well.

But anyway, while Wizard101's mix-n-match name system did prevent rude or gibberish names, it's still possible to make names like "Luke SkyWalker", "Kevin Smith", and "Alicia SilverStone". :P

Cærux Khaiognos (the true name of The Seventh Veil - Seekers of True Knowledge) and Koinonia Emporou (Merchant Society) are both derived from Greek. Would they be acceptable as well? I'm not asking for a ruling to hold you to later, just trying to gauge if it's an obvious "No" already.

It's not as direct a match as some of the others, but Azlant sounds like it was heavily inspired by Plato's story of Atlantis, so I think Ancient Azlanti = Ancient Greek is reasonable enough.

I enjoy seeing names that make sense and show the variety of peoples within the setting. Forcing everyone to name things in Common (Taldane) is both nonsensical and boring.

For the non-English names, one of the guidelines we've been working under in designing the game is avoiding non-English derived words as many languages that we would draw from (latin, for example) don't exist in Pathfinder. Which makes naming things like alchemy interesting since so much of it is Latinized (that and we found some awesome 15th century German wood cuts on sword fighting that we pulled attack names from but had to translate).

Now out of the Guilds we already have, things like the Pax Aeternum and Golgatha, those aren't what we're worried about. And the Finnish one I can't hope to type from memory works because it sounds like it could be in world, just means Brothers in Arms, and could go in a book. It's when we get into really long names, or names where people use the language to hide other rulebreaking, that we get into trouble.

Looking at the lore, it's not hard to justify the use of many Earth languages because there are often Golarion cultures & languages that are strongly analogous to them.

From the description of the old Jistka Imperium and the note that its alphabet has become the basis for the writing of multiple modern languages, Latin = Jistka seems likely.

If you look at many of the place & character names from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, it looks like Norse = Skald.

Though they're lumped into one group by most people in Avistan, the Tian actually contain at least seven subgroups. Looking at the sample names given for some of them, you can tell that they're analogous to real-world groups. Tian-Min = Japanese, for example.

GW originally said the landrush poll here on this forum wasn't going to be used. As the original post illustrates, it's trivial to create sock-puppet accounts here. I think the real landrush should have started after GW had a system to ensure that one account = one vote (pioneer being 1 account, buddy being 2, etc.), but maybe speeding things up by a couple weeks was worth the estimated margin of error. It's pretty likely that the top 3 would have been the same anyway.

Golgotha had no idea what this apparently ad-hoc landrush system would be before they decided to become a member division of a larger community. They wouldn't have done so if they'd thought it could cost them their entire identity, but kludge tends to cause issues, and all we can do is adapt around them. Evolutionary development systems get messy like that.

A tribe of goblins or a xenophobic human settlement, would both be watched for aggressive tendencies. If they began attacking people we would first try and communicate with them, make them understand the error of their ways. If they refused then we would respond with force.

My point there was that both may be docile at a certain distance, and hostile if you approach. If you choose to approach, knowing it will trigger a fight, what then? If they have rights to claim and defend property, your trespass could make you the aggressor, even if you don't attack first. I'm not questioning your intent to act virtuously, but you may have to prioritize some virtues over others. Does your freedom to travel outweigh another's right to defend their territory?

Liberty's Edge Goblin Squad Member

A little more on topic this time... ;)

In regards to life, freedom, & non-aggression, what sorts of beings are covered by these principles? It could be construed as only applying to humanoids, but there are sapient things which are far from human likeness.

For clarity: Anything which is able to have a subjective experience (pain, pleasure, etc.) is sentient to some degree, and those who can experience themselves as individuals are sapient to some degree. Both sentience and sapience are matters of degree, so any line you draw would be somewhat arbitrary.

Do horses have the right to freedom or can they be property? They feel pain, but some people use spurs or whips on them, or even eat them. Monkeys & apes are considerably smarter, with a few showing a considerable degree of sapience, but some people keep them as pets and even hunt them as food.

Do intelligent undead have a right to continue their semblance of life? What about extraplanar beings like devils or demons? Dragons tend to be more intelligent than most humanoid races and are mortal, though long-lived.

Does a tribe of ravenous goblins living nearby have a right to non-aggression? Getting too close to them will probably trigger an attack which you could justify responding to, but that may be true of a xenophobic human settlement as well.

(I realize that you'll probably only apply those rights to players and any NPCs which cause alignment hits if enslaved or killed, so this is more of an exploration of your in-character philosophy than your response to game mechanics.)

Hay, no bringing your logical date formats here.

We do Month Day Year because it makes no sense and that is the way we like it!

Cool, let's start writing time as Minute:Second:Hour and really screw with everyone!

I'm not promoting Day < Month < Year as being much better than the scrambled Month > Day << Year system. I prefer Year > Month > Day, like 2014.05.19. It follows the same pattern as the way we write time, and since it still has the month before the day, even 'Muricans will probably get it. Oh, and values descending from left to right also fits decimal notation in general. If I write the day as 19, people generally know it's the nineteenth, not the ninety-first.

Anyway, the title just got me wondering about the ways we write dates, sorry for the distraction. :D

Well, there is the 'monster play' aspect of an alpha pledge, which might allow undead, though we don't have any idea if/when that feature might be added. With so few alpha accounts, it's probably a very low priority.

They might sell access to monster play to other accounts, since they probably need more than 57 players to run events with. If it's too cheap, that would be something of an insult to everyone who made an alpha pledge, but again, we're only talking about 57 people.

Liberty's Edge Goblin Squad Member

.

.

.

Looking back over the 2nd Kickstarteer, I calculated the following:

PFO Pledges
Unknown .... 98
Npn-PFO . 1027
Open ...... 2925
Early ....... 4625
Alpha .......... 57
Total ....... 8732

EE Pledges vs Players
Solo .. 3720 = 3720
Buddy . 717 = 1434
Guild ... 188 = 1128
Total . 4625 = 6282

Total EE Players: 6339

We may have picked some up since then, but we may also have some unfilled Buddy & Guild spots. Since I have no way to estimate either, I'll call it a wash. I'm not sure why there are 98 unknown pledges in the KS total, but perhaps those represent attempted pledges that ended up failing due to bad card information. At any rate, Alpha pledges are less than 0.9% of the expected EE playerbase, so I doubt GW would spend extra dev time on such a minority. The Pit Fighter thing hasn't come out, and the development time frame & frequency of use for monster play were never estimated, so who knows if those will happen. I'd like to believe that alpha pledges were worth it, but my expectations are pretty minimally-viable at this point. The 'not soon, maybe not ever' judgement on flight magic most of a year ago, plus the map design which uses elevation for chokepoints (making 'never' seem more probable) is likely responsible for some of my expectation deflation, but you can look at the numbers for yourself.

Cayden Cailean is CG and the god of drink. Here's the Pathfinderwiki article which may be more updated than the Pathfinder.wikia one. It mentions tavern-like places hosting shrines to Cayden, and it sounds like they often serve in place of formal temples. Seems like that would cover both pretty well.

Quote:

Temples and Shrines

Few buildings exist that serve primarily as a house dedicated to the worship of Cayden Cailean. However, smaller shrines to the Lucky Drunk are common in alehouses, inns, and breweries.

It also mentions running orphanages and donating to their communities, so I doubt they'd be too happy with followers of a deity that wants to destroy the world or one that wants to create hordes of bizarre and vicious monsters.

If I had a choice I would say no, IMO

Probably not, but it may not matter. The existing poll wasn't supposed to be used, because it is too easy to make puppet accounts to get extra votes. I would say someone admitted it privately, but the term 'admitted' implies that there was some recognition of wrongdoing, and the tone was more of a brag. GW should have waited until they could confirm that there was one vote per pledge, even if they couldn't verify that there was one vote per user.

I expect things to be strict for paladins, as they have the most strict requirements. That's part of what they're about. The same goes for monks, to a lesser degree. Narrowing barbarians down to chaotic-only instead of simply nonlawful misses the point of what they're about.

Paladins and monks may be the type to take a vow of celibacy, while barbarians are the type who simply don't give a f***.

Requiring barbarians to be chaotic turns them into some kind of 'opposite-day' parody of monks. "Close is close enough" makes sense for those whose ethos isn't built around strict adherences. A barbarian turning lawful and losing the ability to rage just represents them becoming too civilized to do their Hulk-out trick any more, not some failure to properly follow the rules of not following rules.

As to whatever was discussed about it above, I don't read much of these threads anymore, I just have a few RSS feeds set up for dev posts and only rarely catch up with those.

Tork Shaw wrote:
A paladin and barbarian could not be in the same settlement since they have conflicting alignment requirements (lawful/chaotic).

Unless you're rewriting the PFRPG rules, barbarians don't have to be chaotic, only nonlawful. A NG barbarian is therefore allowed, and could be a member of a LG settlement, unless you've removed that 'within one step' rule. Do diagonals count as one step or two, in regards to the settlement rules? I can understand not wanting everyone to try being a NN catch-all, but it also seems a bit weird to have settlement membership just as strict as clergy membership, and neutrality is usually understood to be the 'default' state of many mortal races.

Clerics have to stay within one step of their deity/philosophy, druids have to stay within one step of NN, and in either case, diagonals are not allowed. They lose all supernatural (Su) and spell-like (Sp) abilities if they drift too much.
Monks can be any lawful alignment, and similarly lose their (Su) abilities for falling out of that category.
Barbarians are fine with any nonlawful alignment, but will lose their ability to rage if they happen to chill the F*** out and become lawful. They generally still know how to put a greataxe through your forehead.
Paladins have to be LG and basically become feat-deprived fighters if they slip too far on either axis.

Rogues *can* be lawful. Rangers *do not* have to be good. There's a difference between non-something and actually endorsing it's inverse. I think we'll have enough to deal with adding a third axis (reputation) to the alignment system without dragging in old or confused baggage from other alignment systems.

Alright, so... new month, new page, new list update & repost! :)
If I had used something a little more advanced than a TXT file, I might have made this thing easier to edit & count, but I don't see a reason to continue the thread beyond the start of EE at the longest, so this is fine. We're getting some more lurkers & hibernators popping in now, and thank you all.

I also appreciate the folks who help keep the thread active and positive by welcoming the newer people who've chosen to make themselves known here. Tangent conversations have been relatively short, and that's good. I would hate to miss someone because I had to scroll through a long side conversation. I'd also rather folks didn't recruit here, as that could quickly become messy to wade through as well. I created the thread for the wider PFO community of which we're all members. When new people show up, welcome them, but please leave any recruitment pitch to a PM.

Or... maybe someone could set up an 'Adoption' thread in which new people could post their interests & what type(s) of group(s) they're looking for, as a request for recruitment pitches. The various guild-communities have their individual threads, and Nihimon has helpfully collected a list of them, but it can certainly be overwhelming to someone who doesn't even know where to start reading. Basic elevator-pitch summaries could be quite helpful to new people, just to give them an idea of who their most compatible options might be.

Anyway, on to the list!

Overly-punitive crap mechanics tends to make the next meaningful choice a cancellation. Rust is pretty random and there are multiple servers with different rulesets. PFO will have one server and require subscriptions to keep running. Most people have something besides MMOs going on in their lives, and making the game practically unplayable to most people seems bad for business.

On the other side of things, how much fun do you think it would be to have every bit of the NPC settlements covered in naked sleepers? Attack them and NPC guards whack you, and they wouldn't have anything worth taking anyway. The creator of the dummy characters loses nothing by making as many as they have slots for and leaving them lying around to passive-aggressively troll everyone in town. They'll have names to advertise goldfarmer sites, defame players and companies, or simply say rude/inane things. Is GW supposed to hire someone to delete them all? It'll either be a very slow process or one high on false positives.

I'm with Lifedragn on this. There are reasons I don't play Rust, and I wouldn't play PFO either if it incorporated a 'feature' like this.

Maybe in this culture, people are more fascinated with 60° angles than 90° ones, so they tend to measure plots of land in hexes rather than squares. I mean, putting historical Earth conventions aside, there's no reason to break everything into 4 categories rather than 6. Then we could just use something like 'standard hexes' instead of miles, kilometers, acres, hectares, etc.

I say keep the metric. This is supposed to be a single-server (or shard) game, and most of the world uses metric. We 'Muricans can use the practice. Besides, if you were to try emulating medieval measurement systems, every settlement should have its own.

On the XYZ coordinates, which one is elevation? I've generally seen X and Y used for the surface coordinates and Z for elevation, but in Minecraft Y is elevation. Is that conventional in 3D-modelling tools or something?
Of course, if you build the map assuming that everyone is grounded, there's no possibility of magical or mounted flight ever being added, and elevation is irrelevant. Without any possibility of flight or even climbing, the map would play as if it's absolutely flat with those big X chokepoints as the equivalent of holes in otherwise-impenetrable walls.

Speaking of walls, how will the edges of the map be handled? I'm more in favour of invisible or translucent barriers rather than a box of bizarre cliffs all around.

Will the mountains you've dropped into the forests be reflected in any new PFRPG materials, or are we in some alternate-dimension Golarion without continuity? Maybe we're in a demiplane copy of the RK, and that's why Pharasma is doing weird things here. :P

I really liked one of Ryan's first statements about offloading the AI processing to a server farm that can be constantly running to determine what the NPCs are doing even while there are no players in the area.

Ultima Online originally wanted t do something like that, but it became too unwieldy to have the server playing with itself when no players were there to care. It still seems weird to me, as It would likely be easier to just put a number of possible status changes on a list and randomly determine which happened the next time the server loads that area.

For example, if it's been a week since the last time a certain hex was loaded, it might jump up to a week's worth of escalation the next time a player enters a bordering hex. Or, if on day one goblinoids came in, then on day four they were wiped out and replaced by an orc tribe, As far as the player who shows up on day seven is concerned, the goblins may as well have never been there at all, they'd just see an orc tribe with a few day's worth of escalation.

Mind describing how it worked in EQ2, rather than assuming everyone knows?

Anyway...
Seems to me that a PvP 'taunt' could work by applying a vulnerability debuff on the target which only works when they have someone else targeted. The vulnerability effect gives attack/damage/other bonuses to the one who applied the taunt. Let it stack up to a point, so the longer they try ignoring the taunter, the worse it gets. Once they have the taunter targeted in return, the debuff effect doesn't apply. It doesn't go away immediately, so people can't simply tab around to clear it. Like most debuffs, it'll fade off over time, or immediately if the taunter is defeated. There should probably be a way for the target to see who has applied taunts to them, and to what degree, since the whole point is to encourage them to deal with the characters using it. This sort of effect could even be used to let mobs taunt, since it is based on encouraging a change in behaviour rather than trying to control it.

So the MMO one was recorded, but the tabletop one wasn't?

I didn't think followers of the Pallid Princess would deem themselves marvelous. :-)
Why would we not?
Marvelous just seems to lack that dark quality...

Tom Marvolo Riddle was such a happy-shiny individual...

The link that Gedichtewicht shared is them, but I think they're currently planning to focus on necromancy and military power, probably as LE, so an Urgathoan with your goals may fit in well there.

Since success in PFO will depend heavily upon community membership, I'd encourage anyone to check out groups which align with their interests so they don't have to scramble to figure out what the various groups are like whenever chartered companies and settlements officially become available. Cards on table: Golgotha is now a Pax division, and I'm also a Pax member (but of the Aeternum division) so take my suggestion as you will. Nihimon has collected a list of introductory/recruiting threads, so you can use that to check out other groups to see if they;re compatible with your goals.

My lady Urgathoa's Portfolio includes both Undead and War. If that doesn't scream out for her Clerics to start raising Undead armies, I don't know what does!

Sounds like Golgotha's shtick. Have you looked into them?

I went to the pledge tool (not goblin store) and tried removing an 'additional player pack' to see if that would make other options visible, but it seems to have only given me $10 credit back instead of $15, so putting it back leaves me with $5 due. How do I fix this?

Given the MVP thing, they might just start with clerics picking an alignment for their core which determines which alignment-specific spells they get, what type of energy channelling they start with, etc. Then over time they can add the trappings and specialized skills for various gods when that becomes a crowdforging priority.

I see no reason for a wizard to engage in god-bothering, so 'none of the above' (or below) for me. Beings that powerful should be able to take care of themselves, so I'm only concerned with what mortals must deal with. Maybe I'll hold some philosophical affinity for what Aroden represented, but one can hardly call that 'worship'.
If I make a ranger at some point for the DT, I might go with the Green Faith style of pantheism, if I pick up some druid-lite spells. People are a part of nature, so it doesn't need personification.

Kios, Daeglin, MrSavarius, H20sw, Harneloot, and LordDaeron added, plus a TVC tag for the poem gnome, thanks & welcome!

Gedichtewicht - TEO ...is in the list.

When has Grickin posted in this thread?

Also, what is 3: supposed to mean?

He meant Grickin in i are also members of the viridian circle.

But ;) as neither of us thought to post that here, how should you know.

I haven't seen a post from Grickin at all, but I can edit your listing if you like. I don't want to list people twice, but I can add an extra affiliation tag to your name, or move you to TVC and add TEO as the extra, whichever you prefer.
