I wish the Journal was more like a travel guide in the veins of those travel guides we have now. Daily Planet etc. This one goes along that way but for a succesful execution of a travel guide gone rpg one only has to look at Ptolus. The last page is what I'd like to see them all being. It's a perfect handout for when the players ask what's in a Pathfinder Chronicle.
We're going to play gestalt, with 25 point buy. I've got the concept I want and it's going to be: Orc Barbarian / Monk. I'm allowed to use whatever is in the PRD. We're starting at level 1 and are going to play Reign of Winter. I'm seeking advice on realising this build since I've never played gestalt. I'm also allowed to take any one weapon as a monk weapon as a trait. So I can take greatsword as a monk weapon in exchange for a trait.
I'm DM'ing a Way of the Wicked campaign and I've got an Alchemist and a Rogue(Archetype) Poisoner who will be wanting to play with poisons soon enough. Now I'm looking at the craft rules and I'm already thinking of houseruling this for poisons to change the progress. I would change this, so that the time it would take to craft this would change from SP to PP if they have the "Use poison" ability or have the "Alchemist" class. My question however is does anyone have good resources for poisons? Or suggestions into collecting and gathering items. My players always ask if they can forage or try and gather components from slain enemies like spiders, etc. They even go so far as to try and bludgeon critters to death as to preserve pelts to sell. So far I've seen this The Secret of Herbs but I'm also interested in other pdf's or books.
Session 1 - 01/11/2013 Trix, Lia and Branden were pushed into a prison cart together and escorted by multiple knights, a cleric of Ordir [God of the sun and justice in my homebrew] and sir Balin they left Talingarde for Branderscar. The trip would take them about five hours, only stopping once to receive some oatmeal. Trix used this opportunity to spit upon the cleric of Ordir who was bringing them their food. This Dwarven cleric accidently dropped Trix' food after the incident. Arriving at Branderscar they saw a shadowed figure on top of the tower watching them arrive. They were greeted by an unpleasantly looking Sergeant Blackerly, who took them in for processing and one by one they received their brand. Imprisoned they saw that two other cells were occupied, a noble born son called Tomas who still believed that his father would stop his execution and see him released from this unpleasant cell. The other larger cell was occupied by a snoring filthy dwarf with greyish skin. They found out that Tomas was to be executed by way of burning for the summoning of a demon that slew two servants and a guard after it escaped into the outside of his mansion. They also learned that the dwarf' cell was avoided by the guards for he managed to bite one of the guard's nose of when he was making too much ruckus and they wanted to make it clear that such behavior was not tolerated. It eventually took four guards to subdue him and from hence they give him one pint of alcohol every night to keep him intoxicated and calm. That evening they received a visit from Sergeant Blackerly asking them if he could expect trouble or that they would be indulging in good behavior for once in their life. The alternative was him tipping the executioner to fumble their executions and some severe beatings for three nights. He saw upon it that they would receive their food that evening, a rather weak stew. Branden asked if it was possible to receive some mind enhancing drinks saw that the Sergeant had just the right kind of seasoning for him. A good mouthful of spit was used to spice up his stew. The next day they were again visited by Sergeant Blackerly who took Trix out of their cell, not knowing what would happen but without any choice in the matter she followed the sergeant and his men. She was brought into the administration room and there she saw a beautiful woman with white-blonde hair. Tien, as she called herself, greeted her as if they were lovers’ separated by this horrible faith. After the sergeant left she introduced herself as a messenger of a powerful individual that would have employment for her and her three compatriots, this would be a mutual beneficial relationship and al it would take was for them to escape Branderscar. She left her with a gift to remember her by and then called the Sergeant to take her leave from the one time lover. Back in their cell they studied the item given when they saw the chance and noted that the veil had many a useful item hidden in it. They came up with a plan to escape and saw to pawns they could use in their escape. First they needed to be molded though and all three started talking with Tomas, slowly, they changed their informative chatter into spiteful insults, calling him an idiot for believing his dad would free him, this went on for about half an hour with Tomas using the last of a few gold pieces he managed to smuggle and hide into his cell to get a paper and ink, to write his father. Laughing at him the whole time their torment of the young man only stopped when one of the guards banged their cell and yelled at them to shut it. During one of the shift changes Lia and Trix managed to hear the guards talk about a card game that evening at the gatehouse and how the stakes would be quite high as Blackerly changed the shift details so that most of the guards would be able to join. After convincing Tomas that the guards had just taken his last two gold pieces and destroyed the paper and that his father would not be coming to perform a miracle they offered him a spell component pouch in exchange for his help escaping. They tried the same tactic with the dwarf but he was not to be manipulated into serving them, he would however be more than willing to aid them in escaping as he had a debt to repay to some of the guards here and especially against Blackerly. They waited that evening until the moon was up and then they started their plan, with the thieves tools Trix managed to open the cell as the two guards who thought they were handling compliant scum went into the interrogation room to catch some sleep. They left the doors open so they could hear the prisoners in case something happened. Quietly Lia opened the jail door and then she called for the guard. One disgruntled guard went to look, with Tomas creating the illusion of a shut door where there was an open one the guard was rushed as Trix was using her charms to call him closer. Before the guard could yell for help he was taken and stabbed to death by Trix and Lia. Dying with a shock on his face they quickly took his chain shirt and longsword, freeing the dwarf and handing the weapons over. The glim of madness they saw in his eyes did not bode well as the dwarf bee hived for the interrogation room. The other guard was unable to summon aid as it only took one surprise round to finish him off. Branden used the time that Trix went scouting to create a few bombs and an extract and then they went downstairs. After finding the armory they quickly armed themselves with weapons of their choice, Brok the psychopathic murderous dwarf took a greatsword and remarked that he would need some guards to get some notches on the weapon. They explored the left side quietly and found Blackerly's room; while they were searching the room of Blackerly they suddenly heard sound from the hallway heading their direction. They closed the door and heard the two servants complaining about Blackerly and the lack of discipline of the men, reminiscing of days gone by. Believing that Blackerly was drunk again and did not close the doors behind them they locked the doors to the storage room and left for their quarters. The five wicked ones went back to the storage room they heard about and Branden saw to his happiness a few big barrels with lantern oil. They now knew they would leave with a bang and placed a few vats at the door, created an oil track and then went to take care of the last hindrance in the castle itself. For while Branden, Trix, Tomas and Brok quietly placed the vats, Trix went scouting again to find the noise they heard through the wall. She found the sleeping quarters. After the completion of their contraption they went to these sleeping quarters. There they found the guards not of to Blackerly's card game. Capturing them unawares they murdered two before the other three could get their weapons out. Alas, for our villains one of the three remaining managed to gain his horn and while wounded with a well-placed bolt managed to set the alarm of. Quickly they went to the hallway and as Blackerly; together with the guards of the card game and a guard dog they sprung their trap on him. A well-aimed bomb of Branden saw the explosion of the vats and coming upon the grisly destruction of the entrance the only survivor they found was Blackerly, who was treated to a permanent smile by our ghastly trio. The explosion of the Prison entrance did however get the attraction of the warden who raced towards the gatehouse. The villains aimed an arrow at the sprinting magician but they missed. The warden retaliated by sending a flaming sphere towards the escapees, Branden saw himself horribly burned and fell unconscious from his wounds. The others left him for now and started the fight in the courtyard with the warden, not taking him up on his offer of mercy if they laid down their weapons. Brok and Lia went prone on the ground laughing with laughter before Trix managed to slay the warden with a selective channeling of negative energy. They healed Branden with their only health potion and then decided that they would ransack the warden's tower and then would burn this place down completely with the remaining vat. While Brok, Branden and Tomas set themselves to that task, Trix and Lia went to the warden's tower. Passing the servant's chambers they came to the conclusion it would be better as to not leave any survivors and after breaking into the servant chambers they killed the scared servants. Before leaving Branderscar permanently they took several guards, branded their corpses and left them in the closed prison cells. With a burning Branderscar behind them they went towards the Guard house, there the guards knowing nothing good would be heading their way barricaded their selves into the guard house and from above used their bows to shoot at the prisoners. Tomas used his obscuring mist however to end the rain of arrows and as Brok, Trix and Branden all three bashed in the door it became a melee of the two remaining scared guards against the homicidal escaped prisoners. One of the guards however managed to pierce Brok and take him down before being slashed to death himself. Our escaped prisoners now, with an unconscious Brok, saw the moors ahead of them now and noting how useful the dwarf was decided to take him along, even though they have to carry him for now. My players keep out: Also unknown to our prisoners the warden also sent his raven familiar to Talingarde before heading out on the battlements.
Our three villains, Trix, for the crime of blasphemy and the murder of a priest of Ordir to be sentenced to death by burning. To be incarcerated at Branderscar Prison until the day of her execution.
Lia, for the crime of quadruple murder by poisoning, to be sentenced to death by beheading. To be incarcerated at Branderscar prison until the time of her execution.
Branden, for creation and trafficking of drugs and manslaughter to be sentenced to death by beheading. [Alchemist]
In this thread I'll place the story and changes of my Way of the Wicked adventure path set into my homebrew world of Aerda. Changes: Tiadora has become a drow noble anti-paladin instead of a devil.
Since there are only three players they've also got one extra cellmate, the diabolist magician Tomas. Asmodeus is the only evil god I have as the gods, demons, and devils work differently in my homebrew world. Those are the changes for part 1. EDIT: I also apologize for spelling, grammar mistakes, I'm from Belgium, so my native tongue is dutch and English is only a secondary language.
I find the production quality of Paizo's books to be rubbish. Both the AP books and the hardcovers. In comparison to my 3.5 rulebooks they seem to be made out of toilet paper instead of decent paper. I mostly use pdf for pathfinder and the real books for 3.5. The wear on my 3.5 books is minimal while my Pathfinder books' spines are coming loose and the corners are damaged. I sometimes wonder if this is due to the printing age from back then or due to the printer they use. (Haven't bought a single book from wotc since they went 4th, thus can't compare between quality now).

Maybe try and track down a copy of Ptolus?
Spoiler:
Is this the Carrion Crown AP? There is a part in there I believe that has the BBEG kidnap a baby. Anyhow, your cleric and paladin are playing under assumption that the deity will decide if the infant is good or not. Anyhow, I'm under the assumption that it's neutral. A 6 month old human baby is barely aware of it's surroundings. It however has bias, it has persons it likes (those that have been taking care of it the last 6 months) and it has persons it does not like (those that it barely saw in the last 6 months). It'll start crying when group 2 holds it. There are enough articles on baby and mother sites that tell you the whole psychological development of babies. Anyhow, they're laying the descission at your feet so they can play sociopath. This is no different than priests doing the old fashioned throw a witch into a pond gimmick. I however see a flaw with the logic of the cleric.
I also would like to see the conversation the cleric has with the N parents that hoped to see their child again. Your child has been slain, but do not cry for it was an evil infant and no uprising you would give could have swayed it from it's evil, homicidal tyrannical path! You should now donate to the church as to give thanks for saving you from being parents to evil baby X Would you think your cleric justify smiting the following person:
I think I would go with nr 2. If you look at the damage you are dealing with the SoSD you need to choose between 18 and 13 avg dmg per round (if my math is correct!) and with a +8 to +6. To hit a character. Brutal for a lvl 2 character. While not a certainty that you will hit a PC I would go out of a scenario where you will hit one of them at least. Of course if you want such a brutal fight with spikes of dmg on the party go for nr 1. I also don't know what kind of fight your players would like
I have to agree, it is a bit heavy on the DM PC, but so are most adventures where you have to travel with named characters. On the one hand they need to be resilient enough so that an orc that passes by the PC does not just behead them but on the other hand they need to be weak enough to not outshine the heroes. I'll be running this one probably after my Rise of the Runelords but the kids will just be adepts/warriors/commoners with cash to their name. Their actions will also be off camera. I have a dislike for DM PC ever that I was a player in a group where they were weak enough to be rescued but strong enough to kick our characters behinds when we did not stick true to the book. I'll be fair that's more the DMs fault for not being able to think beyond the books.
The missing player's character is always in the background, fighting a creature that is also in the background. A lot of things happen in that background... If I would have a TPK then the character is also dead though I rarely do TPK's and rather go the direction of "you wake up in the goblin's prisoner tent strapped to a pole without your items". I just do it that way cause it is easier on me and the players. If really needed I do use his skills etc.
Seeing that my wife is pregnant and only in week 9 at the moment I actually don't understand how anyone can be a decent adventurer while being in the first three months. Outwards it does not alter much, she lost a few pounds but is now gaining a few pounds the big thing though is the not visible, nauseau, constant nauseau that lightens up a bit if she eats something, a piece of fruit or so is enough for a few hours. Couple that with complete fatigueu after going shopping. This is walking to the grocery store, picking everything and for her just walking back (I'm the mule). After a full days of work cause she still works she falls asleep on the couch. IF you're even unlucky like my wife then you can add another thing to that and that's stomach cramps, in a way us men can't comprehend, which our gynaecologist said is normal due to not seeing anything wrong with the pregnancy. It's her womb expanding. Most women only have this a few days or so. Still she got ordered two weeks of bed rest cause this pain could really cripple her and make her unable to do her work. (She attends and helps senior citizens in a nursing home). But then again, our gynaecologist also said that pregnancies differ from woman to woman.
I do not know if other subscribers or purchasers of the Adventure Path books have this problem but I've been noticing a decline in the quality of the spine bindings of my books at least. It started around the time of Council of Thieves, part 1, 2 & 4 that I received had the first page coming loose from the rest of the book. It was not too alarming at that time since it was not too troublesome and being an abroad customer it was just not worth the time & cost invested to really complain. It also was not a problem with the issues that came since nr 4 Since then though one of the pages of part 4 loosened completely and my part 3 of the latest adventure path has the same problem. I am not one of those people to threaten about leaving or the poor quality of the work itself due to the fact I still love my adventure path. I just ask that you talk to your printer about this, certainly since none of my issues before Council of Thieves have that problem. (Well except part 4 of my Rise of the Runelords but that's due to use)
I know what I do with metagaming like that. Take shalelu and kaven's character, level them up to a threat to the pc by taking one of the nastiest PrC I can find and throw them at them in the next adventure when they assault the fortress of the stone giants. Or you could have them hunt for the characters after all, it's a ranger and a rogue. They should know that former allies can become new enemies after enough torture. Nothing like a destroyed mind makes a nice chaotic villain.
I never really understood the "it goes to fast" element of an Adventure Path. Sure it can go fast but it's a series of events that lead to the culmination of such power. Isn't that what it's all about? PC getting thrown into events that are so much over their heads that they adapt and thus grow in power themselves? Yes you could build in, and here a year goes by between events but that's still not really pacing their growth because the events that give them their power are still going to happen pretty much in quick order. Of course I'm the type of dm that does nog give xp through monster killing but rather the dm that says: "now you level". This allows me to throw some adventures in between without having them outgrow an AP. That's probably why I am still in adventure 3 of the RotR :p

Still while I would love this Jade Regent AP, I'm not too keen on having to buy extra books beyond the Pathfinder RPG/Bestiary/Gamemaster Guide. Those three I see as a necessary investment for the PF RPG. From the get go it was always stated that everything you would need to succesfully pull off an AP is included in the AP books. The moment I need to buy supplements to get the complete deal for an AP is the moment that in (_my_ opinion) the AP is losing it's attractiveness to me. Still while it's my opinion I can only guess that I'm not the only one that thinks about it this way. This is probably that fine line that Paizo needs to walk with its AP line.
I wouldn't mind it starting at level 1 again, put it a bit in the future where the heroes can be connected to the original group that defeated Karzoug. Maybe those heroes, knowing that runelords exist, used all their acquired wealth to fund an organization. An organization looking for information on the whereabouts of the other Runelords. They would try and contain them before the would awaken and endanger Varisia again.
I myself would also like to inform as to the status of my order. As my companion book (Cheliax) has been put to go with #28. I also have not yet received the confirmation that my recent issue, together with the other items I have ordered and should be receiving with them, has not been shipped yet. Concerning order: Paizo Order #1280195 If at all possible I would also like to have the companion be a part of that order. (If however this is too much of a hassle at this time please feel free to keep it to go with #28) |
