Hagar here completed and ready for review.

Thanks for the clarifications, I will have Hagar finalized tomorrow. He will be taking The Foreigner trait.

Almost done here re-working Hagar (who was created earlier for another homebrew campaign), just a short question - since we are low on money (starting funds), are Eastern armors an option (specifically I am reffering to Four-mirror armor) or not?

Seamus, look over Hagar's background and see if any ideas might come out?

After some deliberation, I'd like to ask you if I can re-fluff/tweak one of the drawbacks. What I'm thinking is:

Xenophobic: You have a hard time understanding and trusting those with unfamiliar ways and appearances. You take a —2 penalty on Diplomacy and Sense Motive checks made against creatures of a different race or from a different culture.

I'd like to change that, if allowed to a bit different thing - intead of xenophobic (distrust towards other races/religions), I'd say that Hagar shares that kind of distrust to anyone who never served the army or fought in a war. Do, something like:

Army brat: You have a hard time understanding and trusting those with unfamiliar ways and appearances. You take a —2 penalty on Diplomacy and Sense Motive checks made against any and all "civilians".

I say it fits Hagar's character much better - he does not distrust someone based on race, religion or sex, but spending better part of his life in the army, he is not used to civilian life. So, he could potentialy "value" more the opinions of even an enemy soldier, over his own "civilian" chief. Of course, that would not stop him from killing the same enemy soldier should he have to do it, but in the overall scheme of things, it is much easier for him to find a common ground with those who are soldiers, one way or another.

I hope you are able to understand the reasoning behind it, so please do tell me if this is acceptable?

Hagar here was created for another adventure long time ago, but unfortunatelly it died very soon after starting (adventure, not the orc).

He seems to fit the Aspis consortium "profile" for a mercenary quiet well, you can check his background and decide. I'd just need to add trait/flaw, check equipment and he's good to go.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Hagar uses the opportunity to check spider corpse, as well as the place from which the creature crawled out.

perception: 1d20 ⇒ 5

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Feeling some unkown weakness cursing through his veins, half-orc swings again twice towards the spider, missing with his first swing, but connecting with second.

Double orc axe: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Double orc axe: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

I choose to use Monty's Guidance now, if possible

Fort save: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 1 = 13

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Finally free of the cursed web, Hagar swings twice (with both ends) at the creature ahead of him, trying to slash it.

Double orc axe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Double orc axe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

crit confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Once again, Hagar tries his strength. His attempt is additionally helped by guidance from Cayden (Monty), as well as his awareness of the situation he was in. He had to free himself fast unless he planned on becoming spider's new lunch.

STR check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Being entangled in the web-line, Hagar felt very helpless. He could not swing his mighty weapon, and from the corner of his eye he noticed a shadow descending towards him. Half-orc trains his muscles, trying to burst the web around him.

STR check: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 4 = 4 (+4 for STR bonus, -4 for penalty being inside the web)

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

What kind of roll do I need to make to try and free myself? Acrobatics, STR check, RFL save...?

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"Lookie, lookie, little one is set on taking me job!" - with a big grin on his face, Hagar takes over the cleric (Monty), stepping in front of him, his weapons at the ready. His eyes are checking both the ceiling and the archway, looking for any sign of the enemy.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Me also, but it seems that the spider don't want to come to us, so we'll have to go to them, right?

if the reast of you guys are OK with that, I will go and "prod" them?

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Not knowing how many potential enemies were ahead, half-orc has simply chosen to stand in front of Johanna, ready to strike any incoming monster.

Ready action vs. attack - Axe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
potential dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Sorry, for whatever reason I did not understand that it was my turn :-( I'll post soon.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

"It's better if it's big ones. It's the little buggers that I dislike..." - states Hagar, hiding a small shiver - "Big ones are much easier to hit."

With a grin on his face he advances to stand in front of Johanna, ready to strike at any spider/monster coming within reach.

DM Quasimofo wrote:

When Johanna steps through the archway and begins her meticulous investigation, a line of silken filament is fired from the ceiling above the archway...

narrowly missing her.

Johanna, unless you give some kind of a signal, I am pretty certain that (unfortunately) Hagar would not be aware of what (if anything) is attacking you :-(

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"No problem with me leading the way. As long as you padre..." - and here huge half-orc motions towards Monty - "...are willing to stitch me, after I get in trouble"

With a big grin, Hagar continues forward, and then turns to Johanna and adds almost as an afterthought: "Of course, it would help kiddo if you tell this big oaf over here, yes that's me, if I am to plunge head-straight into an ambush or a pitfall. Late Waldo used to do that for me quiet a lot..."

Hagar's facial image changes to a very stern, and he continues inside, much quieter than usual.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"Nice, I like a little exercise after a nap. And we can even have a snack later on, if hungry. Good find Johanna, keep it up girl!" - Hagar turns to Aasimar lady, with a stern and completely serious face.

After giving her a quick, and not so gentle, pat on the shoulder, Hagar continues: "So, wanna continue alone quietly, or you wanna take us with you? We already raised quiet a ruckus here..."

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Seeing that the dogs are attacking his new-found friends, Hagar refocuses his attention to the closest one, hoping to get rid of the wild beasts as soon as possible.

Move action - Move to the nearest dog (not sure is it Johanna's or Monty's)

axe attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
potential dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"Bah, this makes no sense at all. Come'ere you meat slabs!" - Hagar shouts as he charges towards a nearest dog.

axe attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14
potential dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Two questions - Is it Hagar's turn, or do I wait for the dogs to act first? If it is Hagar's turn to act - are dogs in melee or charging range?

This is nothing like the practice dummies back at the temple

Seeing the might half-orc act out towards the dogs, Monty believes this is the way of a warrior and tries to do the same.

Arrrggghhhhaarrr

Monty screams but the action odd coming from the skinny little cleric.

Hehehe, great post Monty, I loved it! ;-)

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Not sure if this is doable, but here goes nothin...

"Graaarh!!!! Run!! You dirty pups, run unless you want to be my food!!" - half orc bellows from the top of his lungs, hoping to scare the dogs away.

Intimidate check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Also here, misunderstood distances.

Hagar will double move towards Johanna and dogs, trying to close the distance as fast as he can, all the while wielding his vicious looking axe. He has a mean grin on his face and a strange glint in the eyes.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Monty, I am not sure if we can react or Johanna only, but I'll follow your suite and post my intended actions just to potentially save on time. If GM says differently than we'll simply adjust accordingly

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

"Nice stabbin' Monty, you're a natural!" - half-orc shouts to the priest, as he follows his suite and close on the wild dogs. Still laughing, he takes a swing at one of them - "Ah, finally some practice"

I'll assume that Hagar had to move for more than 5 feet, so he could not use full-attack (two weapon) option

Double orc axe attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
potential dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"No doors, no windows. Means inside very dark. You may need some light" - Hagar says to the cleric, stroking his chin.

Turning to Johanna - "Yes little one, I think that be a good idea. We'll try not to be to far behind. you want us to wait here, or to follow you slowly?"

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Midday sun was shining bright, and half-orc, overcome by the pleasant heat, constant gentle rocking of the cart and too much to drink last night, was gently snoring. Awoken by cart finally stopping, he stretches himself, yawns mightily and then gets out of the cart slowly. Scratching his head, he hefts his large weapon and asks out loud, to no one in particular: "So, where to now?"

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"Minotaurs, eh? Nasty creatures they are. But them I could fight. It's those nasty screeching creatures that I don't like. Never faced them, just heard of'em. Nasty stuff - lets hope we steer clear of'em." - Hagar spits on the ground, while his eyes scan the horizon.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Well I've had just about enough of "intro stuff", and I would love to skip "to the action", but I'm perfectly OK if others want to take it slow.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Don't know about you girls and boys, but can't wait to finally enter the dungeon (OK, tower, fortress, whatever) and start "the real thing"! :-)

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"You're guessin' right. How long will the drive take? And is there anything you can tell us of this ruined fortress/tower?" - half-orc asks Yuri, not really expecting any "valuable" answer. Yet he is bored, and that sweet wine from last night was very, very strong. Unlike most people, Hagar would rather talk than brood in silence, when he's semi-hangover, like now.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Come early morning, all of his equipment meticulously packed, oiled and double-checked, Hagar appeared at the designated spot near the city gate. He gave a quick salute to Johanna who was already there, and waited in the silence for the rest of the party to join.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Hidden behind a veritable mountain of potatoes, roast, chicken and several flagons of dark ale, Hagar barely finds the time to answer with a loud - "Aye, I'm your orc...half of an orc actually, hrgh, hrgh..."

He burps loudly and continues to laugh at his own "joke", somehow stil not stopping to eat.

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

"An orc I might be, but stupid I am not!" - Harad objects bluntly.

He raises his huge index finger towards the mysterious stranger in front of him and continues: "As I see, what you're offerin' is the followin' - us to stick our necks and go in some abandoned ruin, and then we can hold as reward whatever we find there, or kill ourselves and take from some monsters cold, dead clawss?! Does not sound like much of a deal, even with you provodin' transportation and such, especially since it's me neck, and of these youngsters over here who's gonna be riskin'it!"

He waits for a moment or two and then continues, looking their "patron" straight in the eyes: "But!...Tell ya what - you give us one...no, two things, and then you have a deal. First, give us some healing in advance at least. Some potions, or salves or whatever. Sounds like dangerous business, and if you ain't gonna be payin' in advance than invest in us in this way. Hell, if we survive, we may even pay you back from our share of the loot. And second" - and here the half-orc grins broadly - "pay us this drinks and a dinner to boost, and you have your deal!"

He casts a quick glance towards others, mild disinterest showing on his face, before returning his glare towards their potential patron. I sure do hope this bluff works, or come tomorrow my boots will be on the menu...

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Half orc pounds his fist on the table and exclaims loudly: "By gods, the priest is right! What are we waitin' for!?!"

Hi Monty/Eli/Gyness - Zane (and others) here ;-)

HP 13/13, AC 17, (T12/FF15), Init +2, Perc +0. F+5/R+3/W+1

Good thing that I heard of this job, not sure what I would eat tomorrow... - musing to himself, lost in his own thoughts, half-orc approached the table, eyeing cautiously the people gathered around it.

He quickly grunts something what could be considered as a "Hello" of a sorts, before pulling up a chair and sitting at the table. He places his large, strange looking double sided axe on the table in front of him, and looks around for a waiter.

I will be honest here - I do not consider myself noob, since I have some experience both on these boards (pbp) and in RL. However, if you need some experienced muscle, then please consider Hagar here. Thanx, cheers

Are you looking for Hollow's Last Hope or Haunted Forest? Any preference as to race/class? Are the original recruitment rules still in effect?

GM:
Djivan wrote:

You had me hooked with your story, superb twist. I also like the reference to Senara. On the other hand, two situations are (imho) flaws in your otherwise excellent story: the Order of the Pike punishing people by enlisting in the regular Cheliax army (doesn't seem like a punishment this order would give) and Hagar waking up, near dead, and immediately beheading Samir with one clean swipe.

Question:
What's Hagar's opinion on the Asmodean Church and the shadowy creatures in Westcrown at night?

OK, first of all, thank you for, what I feel is real "constructive criticism".

Now, as to your comments/questions - honestly, I do not know Golarion as much as I would like, so my knowledge of Order of the Pike is rather limited. I will try to read some more, both on that Order and on Senara, trying to make a more logical "entrance" to the story.

Regarding beheading Samir in one clean stroke, I could try and argue either semantics or mechanics here (something like claiming that Samir also was just returned from the dead, so he was not on his full HP, or that Hagar is a seasoned soldier and he was able to use his considerable skill on unsuspecting enemy, or that it was a critical, etc, etc)...but I will not do that. I will just say that it is a cinematic thing, needed for the story, so it just happened. Whether it was pure luck, writer's fiat, or whatever else, it does not really matter. It just "felt" right, so I've gonne with it. If you have some kind of suggestion how to make it better, I am more than open to listen to it.

And finally, your question regarding Church of Asmodeus and shadowy creatures. At the beginning of the story, I would say that Hagar have just "entered" Westcrown, so he is not really aware of those creatures you mention. His attitude towards them would be shaped by his initial encounter, but probability is that he would not like them. Honestly, it depends a lot on your "setup" - depending on how you paint (present) them, Hagar would decide whether he is OK with them or not.

Related to Church of Asmodeus - I would have to say that he is probably "acceptable" of them. He is not a worshipper (probably he will worship Desna, I still have to decide), but if he spent better part of his life in Chelaxian army, then priests of Asmodeus were a normal sight, and he would get to "accept" them in a way. Not really like them, but if you had at least two brain cells, and wanted to stay alive, then you do not speak against them, at least not in Chelaxian army. And I guess that after some time, he would become kind of accustomed to them. Overall, Hagar is rather neutral in his view of the world - he tends not to choose sides, and his attitude towards something is usually coloured by his initial interaction and his own feelings in that moment. I am not sure if I explained that in the proper way...?

Here's Hagar Silun, maybe not 100% by the rules (story I was writing just took it's own turn, and I ended up killing needed NPC). Then, when I tried to "fix it", I could just not do it - this seemed...just right for a character I have envisioned. So feel free to take a look (all details in the character) and comment, criticize or make suggestions. Thanks for your time, cheers

I'll be returning tonight and will try to mix something. For now, I'm similar to Justin - either dreamer or the afflicted. But I think I'd rather play a barbarian...maybe a dwarven barbarian. Will be posting later on, if there's still room left.
