I am looking to build a Lunar-Mystery Stargazer Oracle with the Shadowbound Curse who worships Selûne. Would this be welcome?

How long until you intend to close recruitment, @GM of the Moon? Thanks!

Time is getting away from me - going to have to drop out. Thanks for engaging with me on my questions and good luck to all in the game!

I can work with that…if anything it’s actually less work for me, though I do like the idea of different draconian magic…/sad-face.

I totally relate to old dog new tricks issues - it’s part of why I’ve only tried the tiniest bit of non-3.5/PF1e stuff…

Awesome, but what about an Oracle? A divine character who doesn’t get Channel Energy… my proposed PC is not an arcane caster.

GM Tribute wrote:
You may have me— is it on SRD PRD or Archives of Nethys

I linked it in my original question-post. It’s on the PF SRD.

It’s not third-party. Paizo published, part of the Ultimate Magic book, if I remember correctly.

@GM Tribute - how do you feel about Words of Power? It is an alternate spell system, Paizo published, that is entirely closed (no additional support beyond one book). I have a PC I've not gotten to play that needs it for both flavor and to make sense at the earliest levels.

The PC is an aasimar (mostly human, with the Angel ancestry for the Alter Self SLA) Red-Dragon Draconic Sorcerer who intends to become a dragon (via Dragon Disciple PrC). It's not the strongest of builds, but takes inspiration from two guides I've read: Oterisk's Dragon Disciple Guide (aiming at the "Beast Caster") and Thus She Spoke for Word Casting (please see page 13 of that guide - I'm hoping you would consider the first option if I'm selected).

What this gets is a level 1 PC who can become a "dragon" (Lizardfolk, with SLA 1 minute/day) and a "breath weapon" (Cone Flame Jet). It's not overpowering, really, as it's got 10-ft range for 1d4+1 damage with a Reflex save for half - good against swarms, maybe, but that's really it. What I hope is that it is flavorful and interesting - a "dragon" PC at level 1.

Please let me know what you think. I don't think Words of Power are overpowered - it's lacking a TON of spell options presented in non Core Rule Books (since it's only a direct port of Core spells into the system), but it does introduce some interesting magic I would flavor as "draconic" in nature.

Thanks!

I've done lots of Play-by-Post, mostly on the Giant in the Playgrounds and MythWeavers forums, and certainly agree that the social-commitment is of utmost importance. The folks I usually play with actually consider it first before any submissions are even considered - new players aren't automatically out, but their presence has to be part of planning...

If selections begin and our history matters, I will share links to my profiles on those sites to establish my "pedigree." Until then, I strongly agree with discussions of that sort - the more people who understand this the more we have good gaming experiences with PbP.

PF1e sounds great to me and I would totally consider submitting a PC to join...will have to decide what sort of character to build...

I've always been curious how to make Kingmaker (in particular) work with the Nation-Building "mini-game" part of it. It seems to me that most parties would struggle with this in real life, let alone Play by Post. How do you intend to make this work?

Assuming a good method for handling that, I'd be interested in putting together a PC potentially. Kingmaker is one of the only APs I haven't played at all...

TheLastGhost wrote:
Raam Fargis you have a completed submission, so you are all set right now.

Awesome, thanks for the confirmation!

TheLastGhost wrote:

I also decided to reformat AdamWarnock's much appreciated character list into a "broad strokes" party role format. Hopefully I did not miss anyone.

Depending on your labeling mindset, Raam is intended to be very capable as a Striker (Combatant?) and Infiltrator (Utility Flex?). He's not "tanky" or anything, but I hope that he's resilient enough to survive melee-assassination tactics. Once we purchase gear I also intend him to use Poison somewhat liberally to provide a little bit of an advantage where I can get it.

As one of the players applying over there, I can confirm interest in another FR game. If I’m selected there I would still apply here too!

In my case, I hadn’t seen this game advertisement either. Will try and think up something in the next couple of days.

Thanks! I appreciate the quick answer!

Yes, I follow - but most of the time spending 2/3 of a starting PC's wealth on one item is a no-go.

Is this allowed this time? It's tight, but I think it fits the PC I'm making and her mindset...

@Liliyashanina Is there any issue with my PC purchasing a set of Hellknight Plate at level 1? It's 2K GP, so more expensive than I'd expect, but such a purchase is likely not going to be possible after we start play and is pretty central to my PC...

Thanks!

@TheLastGhost - Most of my RP is on the Giants in the Playground forum. You can find my profile (and from there all the games I play/DM) at the link I provided. I'm currently running two games, playing in several more, and always on the lookout for more.

On MythWeavers I am active in their Living Pathfinder Society (LPF) group with a couple of PCs. There have been other games, but most don't last as long. Again, the link will send you to my profile.

None of the games I've played here on Paizo's forums have lasted very long - DMs quit and the game dies. I'm excited and looking forward to this one lasting for longer!

Legalistic encourages talking a lot and making committments, wolf faced is the opposite, meaning I prefer I greatly the version including legalistic.
Deaf also, generally speaking, discourages talking, so I am disfavored to it.

Message received - I will work on the PC with Hell-Bound/Legalistic today.

Edit: I really like the "Hell's Reject" trait! Totally taking that one!

Alright, so I've got an idea developing that I want to make sure isn't going to stink of limburger...

Oracle (Godclaw Mystery, Dual-Cursed, Deaf (advances) and Wolf-Scarred (doesn't advance) Curses, leading to Hellknight Obedience (Godclaw Order), Warrior Priest, Hellknight Signifier. I will need an opportunity to defeat a higher-HD Devil to qualify for the PrC at some point before level 6.

The intent is to become a melee/tank monster on the battlefield using spells to buff himself and control the fight. He'd worship Asmodeus but would be an outcast from Cheliax due to his deformity (curses). He's devoted to Law and is accepted to the cause (because he's useful and still alive) in the Worldwound area.

(If that Dual-Cursed pairing is too cheesy I would probably swap to a female gendered Hell-Bound (advances)/Legalistic (static) pairing and still go for the same overall approach, just without the Silent Spells.)

I'd likely spend several feats on Extra Revelations (the Godclaw ones are good, the two Dual-Cursed Revelations are awesome, and one extra Revelation from Dual-Cursed before taking Hellknight Signifier won't satisfy the PC's needs!) and always be a bit short on feats as a result, but I think the PC would work well mechanically.

In the RP sense, I think a Godclaw Oracle that worships Asmodeus would be one of the most favorable types of LE Hellknights to work with a Paladin leader. The PC will be capable of healing, give respect to several LG deities, and generally be capable of working well with others. However, they would not be very nice...

Does this sound like a decent fit for the game, @Liliyashanina? Which pair of curses would you be most positively inclined towards?

With a Ninja/Investigator applying I think I will work on the Hellknight wannabe. Now to decide how to build him...

I’m am SOOO interested in this. Would an Asmodeus-worshiping Hellknight Order member-in-training be a good fit? Or are we looking for stealth and spy craft?

If we’re looking for spy craft, how about a Calistrian Cleric who is built to cover the thief’s role? I would eventually head into the Evangelist PrC with her.

Oh, and is experience with the Wrath of the Roghteous AP be a problem? I’m playing in a VERY GOOD team elsewhere…

I still need to set up an alias for my PC, but here are the mechanics and details:

Raam Fargis:
Name and MythWeavers Character Sheet: Raam Fargis

Race: Halfling (no subrace - he's a mutt born of enslaved halflings)
Homeland: Thay, though he has no interest in returning

Classes: Unchained Ninja 4, VMC Monk

Gender: Male
Age: 24
Height: 3 ft
Weight: 30 lbs

Alignment: Neutral Good
Deity: Waukeen

Role: Melee Striker, Infiltrator, Magic Item User

Concept: Small, Unusually-Fast, Unarmed Ninja

Appearance: With greying black hair, intensely expressive eyes, and thinner than most halflings, Raam stands out from other halflings...when you see him. The young man seems to like the shadows and can become almost unnaturally still when he tries - which is often - so he is usually overlooked by others.

Of course, this suits him just fine.

Personality: Raam is passionate and principled. Freedom, justice, and honesty are all principles he holds dear, and he does his best to live up to them. He is very hard on himself, striving for physical perfection and moral excellence. When he speaks, it is usually quiet with a deliberate weight to his words. In the rare moments when he yells (outside of martial arts and combat) he demonstrates natural charisma and command.

Relations: Aurora, Paladin of Tyr who lead the adventurers who freed Raam from slavery in Thay

Background: Raam Fargis was born a slave in Thay. As a child he was sold away from his parents and found himself working in wheat fields near a monastery of Thayan monks. With natural stealth and unusual comfort in darkness, the young halfling frequently snuck away to observe the monks training, eventually mimicking their actions and learning some foundation of martial arts. Unfortunately, he was caught on more than one occasion and was eventually placed in heavy chains to keep him in the fields.

As he grew into a teenager, Raam was eventually approached by some of the other halflings and taught how to defend himself, how to sneak better, and eventually how to pick the locks on his chains. Though he was warned not to do so, he began sneaking back into the monastery and continued his illicit training.

Raam eventually escaped due to the help of a group of adventuring abolitionists who found him years later. After a series of adventures, Ramm was cold, hungry, and about to be recaptured. He collapsed in a ruined farmhouse as his pursuers were catching up to him and woke up in deep darkness. In a moment of panic he blindly leapt up and into the arms of a watchful dwarf and his companions. Once the lights were turned on he saw the first paladin he had ever seen. The young woman was beautiful, poised, and armed to the teeth. "Hush! You are safe for now, but stay silent. By the light, we will not let them find you."

Over the next several weeks Raam learned all he could from Aurora, but found her strict adherence to her Paladin Code to be perplexing. When he was delivered to the next leg of the underground railroad he wept and begged for her to stay with him. When she firmly directed him to go and commit himself to the good fight he dried his eyes and tried...but his skills did not tend towards the light.

Instead, Raam has tried to be good, but finds the faith of Waukeen to be clearer to him. He still adheres to goodness and honesty, but isn't above breaking the law, especially when the law itself is unjust. His adventures led him far away, but he always hoped to find a good opportunity to serve the cause of freedom as best he could.

@TheLastGhost - can you clarify your answer regarding Piranha Strike? The feat itself is similar in many ways to both Power Attack and Deadly Aim (-1 to -5 on to hit for +2 to +10 on damage rolls, only with finesse-able weapons).

When you say, "Piranha Strike is included in EitR," do you mean that it is an option available to any PC to use, just like Power Attack/Deadly Aim? Or is it a feat that still needs to be taken, as is?

Not relevant, but about Wordcasting:
It's a closed system - only ever released in one book and only translating the base-game spells into its system. There are absolutely cool/powerful things it can do, but it isn't even close to the power of many of the stuff that has been released since. The lack of updates is a big deal here.

This guide is the source from which I get most of my interest in it. I think it's an easy read and worth considering as an alternative spell system for unusual casters. Just my 2 cp.

Oh, and it is Paizo/1st Party!

@TheLastGhost - awesome, thanks! I’ll work on the PC details tonight and have something for you by the end of the week.

Sorry, one more question - how does the Elephant in the Room Feats work with VMC Monk?

Specifically, at level 3 a VMC Monk gains the Improved Unarmed Strike as a Monk of -2 levels. In the Elephant in the Room Feat rules there is no such feat - instead it has been merged with Improved Grapple and called "Unarmed Combatant". Would my PC get that new feat at level 3?

Thanks!

TheLastGhost wrote:
DarkOne, the wordcasting sounds interesting, but it is something i am wholly unfamiliar with. Given that I already have a good many house rules in play, and your very first example offers a cantrip that is significantly more capable than standard damage dealing cantrips, I am going to have to say no.

Understood - I cannot imagine it would be an issue at level 4+, but I will certainly not push for a PC that isn't a good fit.

I will work on the Ninja/VMC-Monk and get him put together for this instead. Thanks!

Edit: This PC needs the Unchained Ninja to work. The basic idea is that the Ninja is essentially a Rogue archetype (on steroids), so an Unchained Ninja should be the update in parallel with the U-Rogue. Is this class alright?

Would I be counting the "U-Ninja" as the "free" archetype and have both Rogue and Ninja features? (This seems OP to me - I'm not requesting it.)

If not, can I take the Scout (Rogue) archetype as my "free" archetype?

Is the feat Piranha Strike included in the Elephant in the Room Feat rules?

How flexible are the racial characteristics? Can we swap out traits for alternates? Or only buy with the additional points from each sub-race?

Thanks!

@TheLastGhost - How do you feel about Wordcasting? I have a Sorcerer--->Dragon Disciple build I'd like to try. The PC uses Word Magic (instead of standard spells) because it allows a "breath weapon" at level 1 (Flame Jet Cone, a cantrip that deals 1d4+1 fire damage in a 10 ft cone, Reflex for half damage). He's mechanically an Aasimar, but I'd want to work him towards the Scion of Humanity side of things with the Angel-Blooded heritage (for the Alter Self SLA so he could become a "dragon" at level 1 for a short time each day). I know we are starting at level 4, so many of these things won't be a big deal, but he'd be past the most delicate point in his career (low levels as a close-quarters "dragon"-style combatant with claws and teeth and breath weapons...).

Long story short, he's really into dragons and intends to become one as much as possible. At character level 7 he would start the Dragon Disciple PrC with the intent to finish it.

If this is too much to consider, I've got a Halfling Ninja/VMC-Monk I'd put together. Much simpler, but a PC I'm not as excited about.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Second recommendations for using a more user-friendly forum. GitP or MythWeavers.

Also think a Discord server would be a strong benefit here.

Finally, why not establish a community-setting with this foundation? Allow lower level characters to grow up in the World Serpent Inn, mix in some Planescape and/or Infinite Staircase shenanigans and build it up from the bottom up?

Dotting for interest!

I will be honest, I skimmed your spoiler, DoubleGold, but I am 100% onboard with "smart" evil as opposed to murder hobo. I have a couple of PCs I would be interested in working out for a game of Hell's Vengeance. Is this confirmed for Roll20, or are you planning Play-by-Post?

I won't be up for Roll20 as a scheduled session - real life isn't that flexible for me. Play-by-Post is my go-to these days, so if that's your plan I would like to throw my hat into the ring.

Congrats to those chosen and please also consider me if anyone has to drop! Have fun!

Aaron Tanessen is fully ready to go. /crossing fingers to be selected!

@Chayanne-- looks good; interesting the choice on both Monk of the Mountain and Nornkith, but they can both stack so good to go!

Awesome. I will have an introductory post up shortly.

@The Mimir

I did some more math - selling the stuff Cheyanne wouldn't want from the kit would look like this:

Arcane Adept Package

To Keep -

Combat Gear: Acid (2), Scrolls of Comprehend Languages (2), Scroll of Detect Secret Doors, Scroll of Glitterdust, Scrolls of Identify (2), Scroll of Mount, Scroll of Rope Trick, Thunderstone, Wand of Mage Armor (16 charges).

Other Gear: Ioun Torch, Scroll Box, Silk Rope (50 ft.), Trail Rations (5 days), 3 gp.
---------------------------------

To Sell: Gear valued at 164 GP, 5 SP total. Selling it at half value for 82 GP, 2 SP, and 5 CP back.

To Sell -

Weapons: Light crossbow (35 GP) with 10 bolts (1 GP), quarterstaff (0 GP)

Other Gear: Backpack (2 GP), bedroll (1 SP), belt pouch (1 GP), candles (5) (5 CP), chalk (5 pieces) (5 CP), flint and steel (1 GP), ink (8 GP), inkpen (1 SP), journal (10 GP), magnifying glass (100 GP), mess kit (2 SP), spell component pouch (5 GP), waterskin (1 GP)

How does that sound?
-----------------

I will add the Clueless trait to the character sheet. Other than that, all I need to feel 100% is your approval on the gear question above.

Cheyanne's Character Sheet

Thanks!

@The Mimir - How exactly are we choosing the faction/Clueless trait? I don't understand so far...

Cheyanne will definitely be clueless - she's not book-smart nor deeply philosophical and is a Prime, so she won't know anything really. Mechanically I was hoping to get Use Magic Device as a class skill, but am selecting another trait (Fate's Favored) as my chosen trait.

Alternatively, is the feat Additional Traits available for selection?

The various gear-packages really don't fit monks. I will try to find one that works and edit it reasonably, but would appreciate any advice folks have for this.

Thanks!

Wow, it looks like I'm the slow one to post here - that's what I get for posting yesterday at the same time as the DM and not seeing that I was selected...

I will be reviewing the thread and making adjustments today. Thank you for selecting me!

Edit: Cheyanne will have knowledge of Planes-Golarion and Planes-Axis, unless that doesn't make sense. Axis is where Irori, her divine ideal, makes his home. If in Planescape this would translate to another LN plane, please let me know.

Thanks!

Thank you, all! Good luck in all your endeavors!

I totally understand - I figured it was worth asking.

To be fair, I've been the "victim" of this going wrong before, in several of the ways hustonj describes. I'm just excited about the chance to play, I guess.

Anyway, worth asking. Have a good evening, everyone!

You know there is another Hell's Rebels recruiting thread active currently (here). Both my brother and I have applied - you might watch that thread and see who isn't chosen that might join your game.

@Kintargo GM, would you like some in-character presentations from us, perhaps to help you select PCs? It's easy for this sort of thing to get out of hand, but it can be fun too.

Please let us know - if you'd like this, I know that both my brother, FarmerBink, and I will be glad to present some writing for everyone's enjoyment. There are probably plenty of others excited about this opportunity to play too. It could be fun!

Also, Happy New Years, everyone!

I've been playing and DMing play-by-post (usually on GitP forums, but also here and on Myth-Weavers) for nearly seven years now. It's fun and great when it works.

I still appreciate input from DMs when I'm not selected. I generally don't do open advertisements, but when I do have found the decisions to be challenging. That feedback is important, IMO.

Looking forward to selections soon(?)!

I think we all understand that, @Kintargo GM. Is there any chance that those of us who aren't selected can get some feedback from you if we request it? I am always looking for positive criticism (though I obviously hope to be selected)!

hustonj wrote:
Gotta say, Oracle seems a whole lot less likely to pull off front-liner than a dedicated self-buffing Cleric.

I find when evaluating an Oracle you must consider their mystery and selected revelations. A Battle-mystery Oracle is going to be much, much more focused on melee-style combat than a Lunar-mystery Oracle, for example.

Aaron has Heavy Armor and Martial weapon proficiencies with the Martial Flexibility ability of the Brawler. He's built to be in melee (with the exception of the Medium BAB, which he addresses with Divine Favor and similar buffs).

A Battle Cleric with similar intentions would be functioning much the same way at level 1. From that point on the devil is in the details - how do the two PCs develop and what choices do they make as they level up? But at this level he's pretty solidly front-line capable, by design.

Though Oracles are full casters, I was not imagining Aaron as a caster, really. I saw him more in the same vein as a Paladin - front line combat, tough, and focused on keeping the fight from the back lines.

That said, over time he could certainly develop in that area.

Aaron Tanessen was a PC with whom I started the first adventure (barely). The DM disappeared and he was shelved after one or two encounters.

I will make some edits to get him in line with your character creation rules, but would appreciate any input you have, Kintargo GM.

This looks like a really promising game! My brother (FarmerBink) and I are very active on other forums (GitP and Myth-Weavers) and will probably put together a pair of PCs for submission.

You are still taking applications, right?

Thanks and good luck to all!

I know me and my brother (FarmerBink) are always looking for good PbP Pathfinder games. Neither of us are huge lore-experts regarding Forgotten Realms, but we would be interested in playing, for sure! Do you plan to start at level 1? How are you doing player selection?

My goal was to imagine a PC who could survive - not necessarily thrive or kill or anything, though I want that too - without relying too heavily on inconsistent things like magic items and magic spells. I remembered an old PC for either Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter Nights that was awful by modern standards but survived alright - a monk/paladin/rogue that eventually finished the game by sheer virtue of being hard to kill and stubborn.

I didn’t plan to totally remake them here, but things came together and Irori (deity from Golarion) made sense, so...there you go.

I actually really love the Greyhawk setting. If I were to make a caster I would probably be from there.

Character Name: Cheyanne Julus

Mechanically I am struggling with Cheyanne a bit. There are several fun classes and archetypes that I am finding appealing, including Sacred Fist (Warpriest), Scaled Fist (Monk), and the Champion of Irori (PrC). The character would remain the same in flavor, though. I just need to identify how to get there...assuming I'm selected.

Just FYI!
