Should an Arcanist take a dip into wizard and select a school, does the opposition schools restrictions in preparing apply to the arcanist spells as well? Obviously there is the penalty for crafting with the opposition schools, this is about the spells specifically.

Thank you

Don't worry, this is not a "Does Mage Armor stack with regular armor" question, clearly the bonuses do not stack.

No, my question is if the wizard has something like Deathless Bracers of armor and casts mage armor. Does he lose the Deathless ability as well as the bonus from the bracers or just the bonus, effectivly giving him +4 Deathless armor?

Thank you

So I am looking for some thoughts on the future feats my Tengu will be taking (PFS).

First, he is a Divine Hunter of Erastil. He uses an Elven Curved Blade. He is Dex based. His animal companion is a Celestial Deinonychus.

His feats so far are Weapon Finesse and Deific Obedience. I am not sure if I wanna take him into Evangelist yet.

I was planning on Spirit's Gift (gotta love Fast Healing) but that is not legal.

I could go Power Attack or Combat Reflexes. Thinking Combat Reflexes for the Pet too. However, maybe there is something I am not thinking of that these 2 could use. Thus, any suggestions?

So if a person with an Intelligent Item gets hit with a Charm Person and fails to resist, can the Item force an Ego check in an attempt to gain control of the charmed person?

If yes, can you fail the Will save vs the Ego on purpose?

I know it sounds a little rules bendy, but it seems to be all by the rules. That said, I could be missing something.

Thank You.

Most recently this specific question was raised seems to be a year ago. So I am re asking in hopes I missed a decision made somewhere.

Guy takes Eldritch Heritage at 3rd level.
Then takes DD at 6th level.
(lets assume he qualifies, somehow, without sorcerer levels)

2 pools or stacking or what?

So my PCs need to collect 4 artifacts for the end game battle. I have 3 of the artifact guardians decided on. A Brine Dragon, a Thriae Queen and her court and a Jinushigami Kami (Land Kami).

The observant among you may have noticed the lack of a fire based guardian (Dragon as water, Queen as air and Kami as earth). My problem is, I need a smart fire based creature, preferably Lawful but Neutral is ok. I would prefer to not use a Dragon.

It is not a combat type of encounter so CR is not much of an issue.

Of course, if you think up a strong Water guardian, I can go with the Gold Dragon for Fire.

Yes, I could go dragons all around, or Genies, but dragons are over used and Genies are not strong enough.

Any thoughts?

Grand Lodge

Can you make Specific Weapons, Armors and Items with special materials, even if the description does not mention a material?

I have a low strength character I want to get a Staff of Entwined Serpents and making the staff darkwood would help towards reducing my encumbrance issue(s).

Grand Lodge

Can these be combined?

Or, in other words, can I use Eschew Materials to gain the effect without using the Reagent. I know this does not work on all reagents, as many cost more then 1g (Black Powder for example), but there are ones that it could work for, like Silver.

Grand Lodge

So I am trying to be sure I understand this before I go too far into this plan.

The build is Half Elf Paladin 2/Oracle 1/Bard 2/Dragon Disciple X. Basically, trying to eliminate Wisdom and Dexterity needs.

If I understand it all right, the best route would be to pick Paladin and Bard as my Favored classes. For paladin 2, taking +2 ER. I am undecided on the type of energy yet. For Bard, picking up 2 more rounds of performance. While the bard is a half elf choice, the Energy Resistance is a Human option, which half elfs may pick. (If someone could please confirm that is correct, that would be greatly appreciated)

So 5th level rolls around and I can take the Multitalented Mastery feat. If I do, can I get the HP or SP for Paladin or Bard, or since I got a favored class bonus, I can not get a bonus from MM?

Am I incorrect on this anywhere?

Thanks

As there are already over 500 posts on the blog, I am starting a new thread in hopes it does not get buried.

Are the rules for the Unchained Summoner available anywhere besides buying the PDF?

So if you are swallowed whole by some outsider, and someone uses dismissal or something similar do you get out of tummy free?

What happens if the thing that ate you decided to leave the local and plane shifts (or similar ability) of its own accord? Can it bring it's doggy bag?

Both these assume the swallowed whole person is still alive. Dead, I would assume your body gets a trip the multiverse.

I am building a Wayang arcanist for PFS and I am trying to find some good equipment. I am focusing on Shadow spells and Tenebrous Metamagic and stealth.

So far on my to buy list is:

Staff of the Entwined Serpents
(partially backstory reason, partially to always have an option in combat)
Belt of DEX (highest possible)
Headband of INT (highest possible)
Cloak of Resistance (highest possible)

I have (or will at 8th) a full 24 hours of Mage Armor via a SLA.

Rod of the Wayang (duplicates my racial abilities)

Any other thoughts?

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Does an Orange Prism change the CL of a racial Spell Like ability? Thus a gnome with the stone would be at HD+1 for it's Produce Flame?

On a side note, do I have to specify which Caster Level the Ioun Stone enhances, or does it enhance all of them? (multiclass wizard/cleric for example)

Grand Lodge

So this may seem like a weird question, but here goes.

Can someone with a familiar take the School Familiar archetype without having the school class feature?

Can someone without a patron take a patron familiar?

I am looking at Arcanist with both of these. The Unlettered Arcanist, swap sorcerer/wizard list for witch and gain familiar spell storage. However, I was not taking the school savant or school exploit but do still plan to focus on a particular school (Shadow Illusions).

Grand Lodge

Is this quarterstaff a +1/+1 weapon (ie, both heads of this double weapon are enchanted) or is it a +1/- weapon (ie. only one head is enchanted, the other is masterwork)?

Other question, if the other head is non magical, could you enhance it with some other abilities? A straight + or maybe some fun abilities.

Grand Lodge

I am sure this has been asked before, but I might as well ask it again.

I ran a tier 1-7 scenario last week. I was planning to add this GM credit to my level 5 character, but, as he is out of subtier for the scenario, is it possible to hold the chronicle till he is level 6 or must it be applied now (with him getting out of subtier rewards)?

I had another question about faction rewards. Can I apply say the Cheliax reward for say 5-11 to my DA character (as well as the rest of the sheet) or do I cross out all those faction rewards?

Grand Lodge

In short, the concept I am looking to make for an upcoming character is very similar to the main character of Rurouni Kenshin. As such, I am looking for a sword that deals nonlethal damage. A bonus would be if it could do lethal with a penalty, but this feature is not needed.

Preferably, I do not want to use Merciful. For starters, I would need to wait a long number of levels to get the 8k and FAME req (this is for PFS).

Anyone know of such a blade in the game?

Grand Lodge

So my Hunter has some spare cash and I have Animal Archive and Beast 3. He has decided, he wants a cool mount, even if it will never be used in a scenario.

However, when he settled on a Elk, I did not realize there were no stats for an Elk he could ride.

Elk is on the list of riding animals available for purchase and the Beast 3 entry says this:

Elk Herd Animal wrote:
Some larger species can stand up to 6 feet tall at the shoulder and can be used as mounts by Medium humanoids; these elk have 3 Hit Dice and are Large. [snip river elk] All elk of this size are CR 2.

So I am now uncertain how to stat this mount, if I can even take it. Are they only available for small people? Is there an official stat block for the riding elk? Should I give it the 3rd HD and the Giant template? May I select a feat for it, since it has another feat now?

There may be better options, but I am not all that interested in those. Riding will be a rare thing for him to do anyway (18 games as a player, never once needed a mount), I just wanna be prepared for if I do get to.

Side question, would it be possible to purchase a river elk?

Thank you

So I have been kicking this idea around for a while and now looking for some advice on it.

Cleric 1, Trickery Domain for Copycat 2nd level Divine SLA Spell/early access to MT

Wizard 3, 2nd Level arcane spell for access to MT

MT 1

Evangelist X, this for advancing MT, but with a d8 HD, 6+INT skill points and some Ref bonus and a slightly better BaB (kinda not really, but better then straight MT) and all the class abilities of the evangelist.

I know I could pull some Racial shenanegains for early arcane, but since I am gonna need 5 ranks or 3rd level spell, might as well leave it at wizard 3.

Mostly I am wondering is this just bad/wrong or is it viable and a legit way to do MT better then normal.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So I am getting a Hawk Familiar with my Hunter, (Divine Hunter Archetype, Eagle Domain).

What I am wondering is, would I be able to teach this Hawk tricks like Distract and Bombard or are these as well as other tricks considered basic knowledge all Familiars(well, bird ones for those 2 tricks) can do?

Grand Lodge

So I was looking at the Blackblade and was wondering, can it be a special material?

I can not find anything saying it must be the normal steel some of them are, however, it is a free item, and a hunk of adamantine is about 3k gold, on top of the 2300 price tag of a +1 weapon.

I then reread the Unbreakable ability. If the weapon could not start as mithral, could you reforge it as mithral after it gets broken?

Grand Lodge

It has been posted before, but not in over a year as far as I can tell.

Catfolk boon?

Or better, Catfolk being opened up for general play, much like the races this year were?

Any thoughts on the chance of this?

Grand Lodge

So if you take Aspect of the Beast (Night Senses) you gain a number of abilities.

If your base race has Normal Vision, you get Low Light
If your base race has Low Light, you get Darkvision
If your base race has Darkvision, you get more range for Darkvision

My question is, if your base race has low light, but you traded it away for say Scent (catfolk) and later take AotB, do you regain low light and get darkvision?

The feat says if your Base Race has X, not if You have X. I can however see the argument against it. Half Elf trading Low Light for drow Darkvision then getting the Low Light back and improving their Darkvision. This is, of course no better then a dwarf or gnome taking the feat, except they are not making any shenanigan like choices while gaining the same benefits.

So I have a whip focused magus, specialized in tripping and disarming. During my last game, I had a thought about using the tripping and disarming to deliver the touch spells.

I think this is legal because the FAQ says I may deliver the touch attacks through my weapon during later rounds via a melee attack. I can also substitute a combat maneuver for a melee attack by the rules in Trip and Disarm (as well as others, but these are the 2 specific ones I am looking at)

However, I have not found anything that comes out and says that these actually work together.

Thank you for the thoughts

Yes there was a thread about this the other day. That one was asking if there was a cap.

Grand Lodge

Is there any way to make the assassin class legal?

As it stands, you need to be evil to take the PrC, but evil is banned in PFS.

So I am looking for a boon, weird rule, variant assassins, something to play a good assassin. Something along the lines of "Kill one to save many" sort of philosophy.

So way back at the dawn of time in 3.5 there was a feat that allowed divine casters who did not gain the ability to spontaneously cast the cure and inflict spell. Basically, druids could heal if they needed too with a feat.

There was a similar feat that allowed divine casters who were not able to spontaneously cast summon nature's ally to summon nature's ally spontaneously.

Fast forward many years and we come to the ACG feat Spontaneous Nature's Ally. Now, this feat is a lot more restrictive then the 3.5 version (a domain req, a higher skill point req that used to be 4) but it still exists.

My question, does anyone think we will be getting the Healing (or hurting) version soon? I know my druid would love it.

Grand Lodge

So I am writing up a Shadow Illusion Arcanist X/Wizard 1. The reason I am looking at the 1 level dip in wizard is for the school ability.

Please correct me if I am wrong (as that would be why I am asking for a clarification) but gaining the school via wizard and taking the school exploit means I can use Int instead of Cha for all the school abilities.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So my group played The Confirmation a little while ago. As my First (and at the time only) character was already at level 3, I had to make a new character.

Made an archer inquisitor for the scenario. Did not really care for it (lack or precise shot and a melee heavy group). So I set him on the back burner with plans to rebuild later.

Did that, eventually. Rebuilt into a bloodrager, and since some of the arrows were used, he had a partially used quiver of arrows. He also bought an Agile Breastplate with prestige. Again, did not play the way I wanted to, so back burnered again with another rebuild in mind.

Now I have a Silverhex Chronicle event on the horizon, which will push him to level 2, where I get a lot of my abilities on my new concept to be viable (Arcanist X/Wizard 1, shadow illusionist Wayang).

My question is, am I able to return the Agile Breastplate for the prestige? This arcanist is not going to be able to use it, though I am stuck with the arrows. If I can not, I will just have to kick myself and make it a lesson to cement my concept a lot sooner.

So I am looking at the Lesser Rejuvenate Eidolon and Lesser Evolution spells, and I am wondering, if these spells made into potions need to be drank by the eidolon or the summoner.

My first instinct is that it is the eidolon, as these are similar to most buff spells. However, there is no clear spells to compare it too, considering the special connection Eidolon and Summoner share.

Additional question, would a potion of Evolution Surge or Lesser Evolution Surge have a preset evolution to gain, or is it chosen when drank.

Thank you

Grand Lodge

First off, making a character who is middle aged, do I get the -1 physical/+1 mental from the age?

Second, making this middle aged PC, he did not start his adult life as a pathfinder. Is it possible to take an NPC class at level one, making his second level a player class.

I am making a character who is going through a midlife crisis. He is a gnome (or maybe half elf) whose father forced him into the family business. Now that he is older, he can dump the business on his son and go have his fun. He is going either Alchemist (what is more exciting then explosions) or bard as a reinforcement of his hobby.

I was looking at possible classes to represent his years as a merchant. I came up with Expert and Aristocrat.

Grand Lodge

So, I am making a Tengu Hunter and I am debating on my second level choice.

I get either Precise Shot or Outflank and I am not sure which I want to go for.

One one hand, Outflank is very powerful (+4 when flanking with pet/anyone else who takes it). This more then makes up for the 3/4 BaB for a few levels.

On the other hand, I can take precise shot without needing point blank shot. I can also take Outflank later as a bonus teamwork feat (level 6). I can not take Precise Shot later without expending 2 slots (Point Blank and Precise Shot)

This character is Dex based, with Weapon Finesse as the first level feat, Elven Curved Blade as main melee weapon, and a beak.

I can pick up an adaptive composite longbow to take advantage of the Animal Focus Bull, once I get a Dex belt. I am also looking at an Agile ECB, once the funds allow. Not advancing the beak if I do not need to.

This is also PFS, if that matters on your input.

Grand Lodge

So, with the recent changes to PFS, will we be seeing a new Pathfinder Field Guide?

The old one is probably still useful (I do not own a copy, nor does anyone in the area from my inquiries at the local group) but of the 10 factions it details (again, assumption) only 2 are still available for play. All the others have been retired. This makes about 10 pages of the field guide (assuming the reviews are accurate) completely irrelevant to a new player.

Grand Lodge

So, first off, I understand I can only deploy 1 attack animal in a scenario. My question is, can I get an Eagle animal (playing a hunter with an AC) and teach it to serve someone else in the group?

I was thinking to have it bombard and distract (get to my question on that in a minute) by being commanded by someone else in the group.

Since I have an AC, I know I can not control it directly. Was wondering if this would be a good work around, being that it focuses on the cooperate part of Explore! Report! Cooperate!

Second question. The Falconer Ranger archetype lists 2 more tricks. Are these tricks teachable by anyone or are they exclusive to the falconer only? (Specifically, the Distract trick, for the reason above)

Grand Lodge

So I was looking at the Hunter Pregen, Adowyn and Leryn and noticed this line:

Hunter Pregen wrote:
and if Leryn dies (or if you don’t want to bring Leryn to this scenario), Adowyn can always have one aspect active in addition to a second aspect for one minute per day.

Does this mean those PFS hunters can tell their animal friend to stay home when they go on certain missions? I can think of a few where the Animal companion would not be good for, who brings their pet wolf to a wedding or party (any of the highly social scenarios) or to face undead (Black Water and Among the Living come to mind) or has terrain that the animal companion will/would have trouble with, (Master of the Fallen Fortress would be an example of such).

Course, that line could just be pregen specific, hope not though.

Grand Lodge

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

If I have a trait that lets me use my Intelligence instead of my Charisma for a skill, does that skill still get a bonus form things like Circlet of Persuasion?

Grand Lodge

Can a creature use it's DEX for melee touch spells?

What if it has Weapon Finesse?

Grand Lodge

So druids has access to animals, vermin and plants for their "Companion" (not sure you can really call it Animal Companion anymore)

So then, how long till elemental pets? Start as small, grow to medium at 4th, large at 7th.

Side note, where are the opposed element elementals, Steam and Sandstorm?

Grand Lodge

Can an investigator use inspiration on his day job check?

I can see an argument for both ways.

Against: the bonus die is not a permanant bonus, and has limited uses.

For: the bonus die is on 1 check, the day job is one check. The inspiration represents you working on a particular problem/task all day and having some insight on it.

If you are in the against camp, are you still there if the Investigator has the Investigator Talent: Expanded Inspiration, allowing free inspiration on all profession checks?

Thank you

Grand Lodge

So Paragon Surge allows you to use a feat you meet the requirements for.

Evolution Surge allows you to upgrade the eidolon.

My question is, if you use the above spells to give a feat/ability with a limited uses per day, do you basically have uses per day = to your ability to cast the spell or do you gain the feat/ability with 0 effect then.

Specific examples:

Half Elf: Uses Paragon Surge to gain Improved Eldritch Heritage to gain the breath weapon for dragon (assuming it has the proper Skill Focus and Eldritch Heritage feats). He is level 11 at least. Uses the breath weapon during the battle. In a later encounter, he casts the spell again, gaining the same feat. Does he get a second breath attack?

Eidolon: Same situation, Summoner casts the spell, Eidolon gets and uses the breath weapon. Later spell is cast again, that day, granting the breath weapon.

Grand Lodge

Basically, as title says. Can the Eidolon take Beastiary Feats?

Additional Resources wrote:
Feats: none of the feats are legal for play for PCs, animal companions, or familiars unless specifically granted by another legal source

By that, I would assume yes, as the ban says only PCs, animals and familiars.

Grand Lodge

So I am building a Wayang mage, typically casting shadow spells.

There are 3 options I can see for this guy, Witch with shadow patron, wizard with shadow illusion school and arcanist.

This is a PFS character, so add in all those modifications.

Wizard: Fairly standard and straight forward. Problem is there are few good shadow spells (shadow weapon, but being small and limited weapon proficiency make this difficult). Plans to have cat familiar and Shadowy Dash.

Arcanist: This one looks the most fun, but also seems to be kinda front loaded, with few benefits as it levels. Taking the familiar exploit and either Shadowy Dash or Extra Arcanist Exploit to gain the Shadow Illusion school. I plan to take a level of wizard at second level to get the full benefits of the school, and more spells and Spell Focus as a bonus feat.

Witch: This one looks like it can get the best DCs (witch knife with the spell focus and greater spell focus). However, it will push me to the back seat in combat, making me a healer occasional debuffer. No Shadowy dash however, the -5 is not too big a penalty, and once I can fly, I wont need to move at full speed.

All of them, I plan to grab a Silvasheen Familiar by level 7. Also, I plan to make stealth a priority, hence the Shadowy Dash.

Any suggestions on which of the 3 is more effective or been more enjoyable??

Grand Lodge

My problem: I have an Elven Inquisitor of Erastil at 1st level, 1XP. He went through the Confirmation, lots of cool rewards, BUT, I found the archer style underwhelming. I am sure at higher levels it would be fun, however as he is now, I did not enjoy him.

My Question: Is there a limit in rebuilding him. I know I can rebuild before level 2. He has only been in 1 scenario so that is not an issue. However, what can I change? Feats, skills, traits or Class Features (picking a new deity/domain) or what your class is (thinking bloodrager). How about race? is he stuck as Elf, or can he turn up next game as half elf or tengu or wayang?

Thank You

Grand Lodge

Can a summoner have his eidolon do his daily job check for him?

Eidolon is a near constant effect, with skills.

Specifically, my eidolon would be biped, mostly human looking (enough so that you would think its a tiefling at best). She would be a skilled dancer for job check (Perform [dance]).

Grand Lodge

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate. 2 people marked this as a favorite.

So Slashing Grace is a feat that allows you to add you Dex modifier to damage, instead of Str.

On its surface, it looks like the long awaited final piece to making a dex based melee combatant. However, there are segments of the PF population that cry foul when you try to do this. They scream that it only applies to one handed weapons. Why is this an issue? Because those same people will claim that light weapons are not one handed weapons.

This would not matter except that, based on their interpretation, you can no longer use Dex on your attack. Weapon Finesse (a prereq to Slashing Grace) only allows certain weapons to be used with it. These are Light Weapons (tossed out by the light=/=one hand crowd), Rapier (a piercing weapon, thus not allowed with Slashing Grace), Elven Curved Blade (a 2 handed weapon), Spiked Chain (another 2 handed weapon) and the Whip (the ONLY weapon that can use Slashing Grace and Weapon Finesse).

So it comes down to this. Is the feat useless (lets face it, its a wasted feat if you can only use it on a whip) or are the creators trying to tell us that light weapons are one handed weapons with benefits.
