![]() Thread Necro... I am running the game for my kids and their friends and I was trying to do the same thing, 4 years after you did ;). My resolution was poor though and I didn't want to spend the $80 on something that might not turn out. Do you still have the high def file you used, or was your map "fuzzy" too? kadance wrote:

![]() I have been enjoying Retcon Raider's overview of this game on YouTube (check it out) and have been agonizing over what type of character I want to play - good/evil - class - going for CHA so I can be a good leader or just blaster mage? So many decisions which makes for good replay value. What type of character and class do you envision on your first play through? ![]()
![]() Characters: Pregens of Seelah, Meriesel, Kyra and Fumbus Kids aged 11-13 and 1 adult player
Encounter Overview: Fumbus had knowledge of many rooms and possible encounters, yet still fell victim to many of them. Sewer Ooze - cake walk but did injure 3 players with the area acid damage 4 goblin warriors - they were able to sneak in close and Fumbus tried to talk to them. They attacked but Fumbus set some on fire with alchemical bombs, the enemy goblins tried to run but ended up running into the fungus room - setting off the spore cloud and explosion. More party damage, used some healing. Vermin Den- Deadly encounter. Fumbus went below zero 3 times, Kyra once trying to help him. The centipedes swarmed Fumbus in the first round when he critically failed his bomb throw and it didn't go off, alerting the centipedes to his presence. After this encounter, the rest of the party's healing was used up. Fungus Bloom - not encountered due to goblin warrior setting off the fungus accidentally. Quasits - Fumbus went into the pool and retrieved the idol -HERO POINT (he was evil), gave it to the Paladin to smash and thus set off the encounter. First quasit went down quickly, due to critical hits. The second played invisible tag with the crew. Meriesel was not hit but couldn't do any damage either. Eventually, they grabbed the little guy while he was in centipede form and bashed him down. Falling rock trap - Fumbus informed the party of the trap and they triggered it safely. Goblin Headquarters - deadly encounter. Fumbus went down again twice and Kyra again once. The goblin pyro was deadly with burning hands, but less effective after that. The regular goblins ganged up on the "traitor" Fumbus and took him to Dying 3, he used a Hero Point to recover, only to go down again a few rounds later. The party was so beat up after this encounter they took 2 days to recover back in town and came back refreshed. Skeleton - nuh-huh - no way. Skipped this encounter until they met the BigBadGuy. Choking Sands - Religion check passed to recall a prayer to bypass the trap. The water from the fountain was also clear, so they went back and drank some just in case. Befouled Shrine - Drakus and the (giant)rat [I couldn't find a dire rat entry while running] were relatively easy for a fully charged party. The rat was killed in the first round after charging from hiding. Drakus did some damage to Kyra and Seelah, but the two of them kept him busy and made him switch targets often. Pharasma's Sanctum - they purified it without prompting from me but chose not to take the magical dagger out of respect. They also figured that they were not going to play these characters again until 9th level so why bother? Drakus' Lair - no issues, used the key as expected without prompting and returned the stolen goods to the townsfolk without prompting...amazing! Informed Keleri of the Star and journal. Overall, they had fun and are excited about trying new characters next week for their 4th level adventure. We just finished up a 2 year campaign with this group so 1st level characters were a challenge for them. We had questions about opportunity attacks and spells per round (if you have actions left can you cast more than one spell?) We did lots of looking up rules as we went. A suggestion would be to put those rules expected to be used right in the adventure. "So you want to grab a creature here's what you roll..." ![]()
![]() I love the bat swarm and am happy to see the elemental set completed. I started Kingmaker with my kids group but they wanted to go a different direction pretty quickly and developed their own character goals so I am just pulling parts of KM into their campaign instead. Gotta love that about kids - best plans of mice and all.... ![]()
![]() Heroscape had a few minis also that fit well. For PF and D&D minis we also used a Denizen of Leng, wererat, red mantis assassin, thri-kreen, Inspired Lieutenant, and a few hero clix gunners for the Pre-gens that came out. The only thing that didn't fit great was a drone mini - we used a homunculus ;) But - build a dedicated SF mini set and I'm all in! ![]()

![]() When I do Pathfinder for beginner players, I do replace the Cleric, Wizard and Druid with the Oracle, Sorcerer and Hunter respectively. For kids it is a daunting task to figure out spells and spell selection and memorization. The spontaneous casters are a bit easier to handle for younger players. But YMMV, best of luck and Happy Gaming! ![]()
![]() While it is considered impossible to truly domesticate owlbears due to their feral natures, they can still be used as guardians if contained within an area but allowed to roam and hunt freely there. Also, what happens if you fail to rear an (magical beast) animal? It eats you. Best of luck with your little owlbearlettes. ![]()
![]() There are always consequences, but they don't always have to be for the player's character directly. I say let the players play but the consequences may fall to NPC's, mentors or other factions that indirectly affect the character. Maybe the cleric runs into the family of one of these slaves and the interaction doesn't go well - maybe the character runs into another Cleric of Sarenrae with differing ideals or philosophy and his actions are discovered. Again, let the players play their characters how they want, but turn their actions and consequences into more story. His perception of Sarenrae is his reality - have him run into someone else's reality farther down the road... ![]()
![]() Hello Creative Paizo Mambers, I am starting a group of youngin's off on their first Pathfinder adventure. These kids range from 9-12 years old and are new to the game. I am looking to compile a set of kid-friendly encounters for the group. I understand the combat is a part of the game but want to balance that with encounters that can be solved non-violently also. I'd like ideas ranging from adventures to just encounters. Thanks in advance for your help. 1. The "Overflow Archives" seemed like a good kid friendly adventure 2. (Stolen from an adventure long forgotten) Help a cart driver recollect his lost cargo of soon-to-be familiars (hawks, mouse, toad, snakes)etc. Kids can use their knowledge of the animals to help find them. 3. Rescue the trapped miners. 4. Rescue villagers from a burning building. ![]()
![]() Our DM had us find an artifact ring. If you were wearing it and died, you were resurrected (naked and within 1 mile) from a tree. But...an exact copy of you was created elsewhere in the world but of opposite alignment. You knew of each other's existence but not where the other was. It was used only once and led to great role playing and story arcs. In the end, death sucks for everyone involved. But balance exists. You raised your fighter, but the BBEG raised his champions too. For every tool a player has, the DM has two :) Keep that in mind. ![]()

![]() His backstory had him kicked off a ship for accruing too much bad luck . He was left with no weapons and it is difficult for a tengu to make friends with his appearance, lack of funds, poor social skills and him believing himself cursed. So right now, it's just claws and a beak and some torn pirate pants. Strangely enough, the beasts he's fought don't drop swords or armor like in a video game. :) ![]()
![]() I am playing a tengu rogue with the claw racial adjustment. It is listed as gaining 2 primary attacks with claws. I have a +2 strength bonus. First level, rogue. If I do a beak attack, or a single claw the bonus is +2, right? If I do a full attack, I get a beak ,claw, claw. All at +2? +2/0/0? -5? I took multiattack as a feat, but does that help? One dm said since all attacks are primary, they' d all be +2. The other disagrees. Herolab doesn't penalize the bonus but also isn't taking into account a full attack. Thanks for your help. ![]()
![]() We grew up just north of Lake Geneva, WI so no issues here. One of my friend's parents had an issue with it, but the rest of us were welcomed into each other's homes (basements) and we played regularly with mom bringing us snacks. Our local library even had D&D books. It was more hype than anything else and our crowd was better educated and more tolerant than the typical anti- crowd. ![]()

The multiple intelligence theory is largely outdated and has shown to have no effect on test scores. We all have all of the intelligences listed there (and the new ones they keep adding) to some degree. The basis for MI, though, is that of "engagement". The more students are engaged, the more they learn, apply that knowledge and recall it later. Try the "Gamification of the education and instruction". Your experiment could include aspects of this idea and possibly increase engagement, thus learning. Just my 2cents. I've incorporated these techniques with varying success in my classrooms. One thing for sure, gaming/fantasy language increases vocabulary and RPG's are great for higher level thinking - you need to read, understand, apply, synthesize, judge results, re-read, research, apply math, creativity... good luck and good planning!! ![]()
![]() So for "Pilfering hand". It is Save: no, Spell Resistance: yes (object) If I target a wizards' magical staff of Fire (CL8), and the wizard has no SR, what SR do I have to beat...if any? The Staff's? An arbitrary number? All the posts I find have to deal with magic item saving throws not spell resistance (object). ![]()
![]() Tangaroa, thanks for the build. There's a lot of info there and I appreciate you sticking to core stuff. We haven't picked factions yet, but Qadira has a nice, flexible bonus there. I try to avoid a super low stat for build purposes , but have played then for rp. By the looks of it it seems most public run PFS scenarios expect you to optimize more around the numbers than role playing? At least that's my perception from other Board commenters. Thanks once again. ![]()
![]() Thanks Icy and Magda, I wanted to go universalist due to the hand of the apprentice ability to throw my battle axe arcane bond and get it back a few times a day when low level spells aren't enough. The summoning suggestion is solid, once I get to keep them around more than 1round. The party is big so I'll have protecters, but so far I am the only arcane caster so I do plan on staying a wizard only. We generally don't play min/maxed characters and our flaws are as much a part of the game as our strengths. I'll start building with your advice and see where it goes. Thanks again. ![]()
![]() Hello Esteemed Paizo Board Experts, I am looking for a PFS build (CRB, traits, alt. race features) for a dwarven universalist wizard. Looking for survivability and throwing battle axes build. Prefer abilities at 10+. I have the backstory, motivations and personality - I just need the numbers, traits, feats and possible spell options (again CRB only. Your time and consideration is appreciated. ![]()

These were good (part 4 was the most helpful), but referred to the looser D&D rules, I know PF is really close, but the wording under illusion school is a bit more restrictive, I believe. The smoke/fog thing is still a bit tricky, but I'm going to allow it for now, with an immediate saving throw once anyone enters the area. I don't think I'd allow darkness, that seems to break one or more of the restrictions somehow... Thanks again friends. ![]()
![]() Here's the question that came up during character creation. The sorcerer wants to do this: Free action: drop smokestick (fills 10' cube)
I see no problem with this, it seems to work, I'd even allow a saving throw penalty when his pursuers pass through the smoke into the fake smoke because of the other senses stimulated by the original smokestick. So do enemies get a ST as soon as they pass into the silent image, or do they have to actively disbelieve. Further, if the sorc can convince the PC's of the illusion, can they fire at the enemies in the Silent image without penalty and remain under the illusory concealment? I see no issue with this use of the spell (besides the cost of the smokestick), but is this a case of "Figments cannot make something seem to be something else" ie clear air look like smoke? ![]()
![]() Thanks Malag, your post helped out, but seeing conflicting responses only serves to cloud the issue. I'm all for GM discretion, but when I try to put all of the rules for illusions and specifically for this spell together, it seems more limiting than some posters think. SRD: "Likewise, you cannot make a visual copy of something unless you know what it looks like" My interpretation: I can make a realistic campfire, because I have seen one. I could make a red dragon, because I saw a drawing in the book...but it would look like the drawing. I don't think I could imagine a realistic eye tyrant into existence because you described it to me. This is not a major issue for a wizard but the sorcerer wants to make the best use of his spell list. I have noticed that the D&D and PF versions of illusions and restrictions are not the same, it seems looser in D&D, maybe that's where some of the confusion comes in. Thanks again, I'd still like some more input before I make my decision, but I'm still leaning toward a more restrictive version, not out of spite, but for the sake of consistency for the players. "But it worked last time" is a DM's nightmare. ![]()
![]() I need a few clarifications: 1. Can silent image be a moving image like a campfire swaying in the breeze or a guard pacing back and forth? Or is it simply a static "photograph" you can move within range? 2. Under the illusion rules for figment, you have to have personally seen the image you create. If my character never saw a real dragon, can he conjure one from his imagination? 3. A figment also cannot make something look like something else so... I could make a wall in front of me, but not "cover" a pit trap? I cannot make a fire look like a pool? I can't make a door, look like the surrounding walls. I have a few more examples, but basically a lot of the "suggestions" I see online for using this spell creatively simply are against the rules. So for my last question... 4. Is silent image as versatile as everyone says, or are many people simply using it incorrectly? Thanks. "New to Pathfinder, old-time gamer" |
