Earlier... Earlier that day: a strange figure is slumped in the corner of the Venture Captain's office, snoring loudly. He is covered in tattoos, all of them displaying words in a variety of scripts and languages, so many of them that it's a bit difficult to make out whether he is human or perhaps an elf or perhaps something in between. He is wearing a wayfinder over a set of tie-died pajamas and the pajamas appear to have a variety of notes pinned to them. He startles violently, stretches lazily, yawns, spits, and looks around the room with bleary eyes. "Oh. Hello. I'm - I'm - I'm..." He trails off in confusion. "It's a pleasure to meet you all. I'm..." He looks around the room, as if perhaps he might find some clue or indication, something to get his bearings. He rubs his eyes to be sure that he is actually awake, and gives himself a good strong pinch. "Ow! Hmm, well I'm awake, no doubt about that, but that doesn't help much to know that, if I don't know who it is that is awake, now does it? I don't suppose any of you know? Frightfully embarrassing, I must say, I'm sure that it will come to me in just a moment, but for just now, I have to admit that I don't have the faintest idea who I am or what I might be doing here. Perhaps you can assist me?" Pinned to his pajama shirt is a note with large, bold writing: "Birseko Naam - if found, return to nearest Pathfinder Lodge." Staring down at the note, the figure reads it, and then softly whispers, "Birseko Naam, birseko naam... I wonder if that could be me? I feel so unsure of everything just now, it's as if you wake from a dream and you can't decide if you are awake or still asleep..." He pauses, and then exclaims, "Dreams! Yes, that is one thing I DO remember, in my dream, though it was REAL, not a dream at all, mi'lord appeared to me, assuring me that his time is coming, and that I should go forth to herald him. Lord Ranginori returns! Let all know and tremble!" A look of consternation and confusion crosses swiftly over his brow. "That was real, wasn't it? I saw it in my dream but I'm quite sure it was real, as sure as I am of my own..." He trails off, uncertain, eyes aglow with a mixture of fervent devotion and the straining for memories that seem to dance just out of reach. He looks around at the assembled pathfinders. Given how large the complex seems to be, Birseko doesn't renew his Mirror Image spell when it expires after 5 minutes, but he does cast Acute Senses again and also, when it expires after 10 minutes, uses his wand of Heightened Awareness again. Before they leave the Museum, Birseko tries to grab any of the relics that the group doesn't already have in its possession. When the news arrives from Madame Adenalar, Birseko renews his Mage Armor from his wand and asks for directions to the cemetery. "Perhaps we'll find our nemesis there! I can't think of where else we might look right now."

Birseko emerges from his trance and relates what he saw to his comrades. "I wonder if the murder victim I saw is this poor corpse here?" He gazes down at the body to see if there are any indications one way or another. He also pauses to recall - though this is typically not his strong suit - whether anyone they have encountered so far looks like the red-eyed woman in his vision. GM, these occult skill unlocks have so much potential for fun role play and story telling but I've found that it really depends to a huge extent on the GM. Thanks for working with them!

Oh right, I forgot that I had "remembered" vanish. Birseko makes as if he is looking for a toilet but as soon as he is out of eyesight he turns invisible (Vanish will last for 5 rounds) and then goes to find Riltar and Tabar. Once there, he tries to learn something from the corpse. He'll attempt both the Phrenology and Psychometry occult skill unlocks, using his Focused Trance ability for each one. Phrenology (Knowledge Arcana), Focused Trance: 1d20 + 10 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 20 = 31 Well, I guess that's not an auto-fail in PF1... Still, bah! Psychometry (Appraise), Focused Trance: 1d20 + 8 + 20 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 20 = 36

Using Message to reply to Riltar..."Alas, I cannot speak with the dead but I do dabble in phrenology and might be able to discern something by examining her skull. Shall I come to where you are? I'm not quite sure where that is and it might attract attention as well..." Speak with the Dead is a level 3 spell. I do have some occult skill unlocks that might be relevant: phrenology and psychometry, most likely, and I could also attempt to recall a level 2 (or 1) spell that I don't currently know, though nothing is coming immediately to mind that would be helpful. Can't claim that I've thoroughly exhausted the spell list though in case anyone has any ideas.

As the various conversations unfold around the room, Birseko decides that the most useful thing he can do - besides watching Tabar's dog - is to continue monitoring the thoughts of their various interlocutors. The initial casting of Detect Thoughts would only last for 5 minutes so he'll do the same trick again - using another level 2 spell slot for the better DC (Will DC 18) and also Stylized Spontaneity feat to try to make it appear as if the "source" of the spell is the stuffed animal that Dimak is studying. DC 14 Caster Level check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Before entering the museum Birseko will activate mage armor from his wand and will do so again when it expires in an hour. Before the pathfinders begin to mill about, he casts Message on everyone but Dimak. (Sorry Dimak, I can only get 5 of us!) Birseko gazes around the room, taking in the various individuals that are of interest to them. Then he grows very quiet and nearly motionless, as if he is simply contemplating the displays in the museum. I've never done this before, so GM please let me know if you see any issues... Birseko uses his psychic class ability to cast Detect Thoughts, using a 2nd level spell slot instead of the class' SLA, so the Will DC is DC 18. Duration is concentration, up to 5 minutes. Most GMs I've played with have ruled that even psychic spells are apparent when they are cast, even though they don't have somatic or verbal components. Also, since the spell has a Will save, presumably the targets recognize that they are being targeted. To avoid both of these issues, Birseko will use his Stylized Spontaneity feat to add the Imitate a Dissimilar Spell OR Direction of Spell’s Effect to disguise the spell. I give these two options because I'm not quite sure how you will parse these. If I can use the Direction effect to make it seems as if Detect Thoughts is just coming from an empty spot in the middle of the room, then I'll do that. Alternatively, if that won't work, then I'll use the Imitate effect to make it seem as if the spell being cast is actually Know Peerage (which I suppose might make the target(s) (incorrectly) feel as if they are suddenly very knowledgeable about nobility!). Per the Stylized Spontaneity feat, this requires a DC 14 caster level check or the spell is lost. Caster Level Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 So, if this all works the way I think it should, Birseko will now spend the next 5 minutes attempting to read the "surface thoughts" of the various individuals of interest to us (and pass those on via Message to whichever pathfinders are actually speaking with those individuals). They should each get a DC 18 Will save to resist but if they do so I *think* they will either think that the spell originated from the middle of the room or else think that they have simply been targeted by the Know Peerage spell. I'm curious to see how this plays out - this is the first time I'm playing Birseko since I took the Stylized Spontaneity feat - it seems like it has a lot of crazy potential but I'm still figuring out what do with it - suggestions welcome! :-)
