Welcome Jason Keeley!

Thursday, March 19, 2015

In the last week, you may have noticed Wes introducing two new developers here on this blog. Sadly, this has led the editorial team to the only logical conclusion: the developers must be bolstering their forces in preparation for an assault across the cube wall, in which they'll attempt to annex editor space. I can assure you, however, that the editors aren't about to go down without a fight, which is why we've hired a brand new word-warrior: editor Jason Keeley!

While I go secure the perimeter defenses, here's Jason to introduce himself:

Hello! I'm Jason Keeley, the newest editor here at Paizo. I'm thrilled to be working with this group of talented people.

I was introduced to RPGs shortly after college. Before that, I had only played video games like Might & Magic and Baldur's Gate, so I was familiar with the concept, but I didn't realize how quickly tabletop gaming would become such a huge part of my life. Soon after, I discovered Paizo through Dungeon magazine, and started running the Savage Tide Adventure Path. Many, many APs later (I even ran two at once!), I felt ready to begin contributing to the game I enjoyed so much. I contributed a short story and a monster to issues of Wayfinder, wrote a grimoire of spells for Fat Goblin Games' Vathak setting, and, most recently, made it to the top 16 of RPG Superstar 2015. I would have liked to continue in the contest, but, as you can see, the Golem came calling for me!

Outside of Pathfinder-related material, I edit stories for the swords-and-sorcery e-zine Worlds Without Master, as well as function as the editor-in-chief of my own (small) imprint, Pantheon Press. Our flagship product, Fortune's Fool, a Tarot-based RPG, won a Judge's Choice ENnie in 2011!

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, all kinds of gaming, and looking at funny pictures on the internet. Especially funny pictures of dogs.

Jason Keeley
Editor

Please help us welcome Jason to Paizo! With any luck, he'll survive the initial skirmishes. (If the photo is any indication, he's clearly no stranger to international espionage...)

I had the pleasure of working with Jason on a grimoire he wrote for Shadows over Vathak. He did a phenomenal job and Paizo is lucky to have him. Congrats, Jason!

Hello all and thanks for the welcome!

It was either this tuxedo picture or one of these three pictures:
Me as a baby
Glamour shot
A Halloween costume, I hope?

And they are all far to embarrassing to be shown on the internet.

Oh, wait.

Which Wayfinder monster(s)?

Let me see if I can remember this correctly. I wrote "Cloud of Smoke" for Wayfinder #10 (the Katapesh issue) and created the saurosphinx for Wayfinder #12 (the Osirion issue). Both story and monster just so happened to be illustrated by Andrew deFelice, who is coincidentally a good friend!

Project Manager

Glad to have you on board, Jason. :-)

Thanks for the shout out to Fat Goblin Games Jason, and congrats on the new job!

Welcome, Jason.

I trust your employee welcome kit included armor spikes for your upcoming battle with the developers. They hate that.

Paizo Employee Developer

Nah, it's the other Jason that really doesn't like armor spikes. We developers have natural armor against such meager weapons and don't fear them at all.

I think you've confused them with designers. ;-)

I've always been confused on the difference between developers and designers.

Oh, you are responsible for Fortune's Fool! It was a good read and a nice mechanic. Too bad I never got to play it though.

And welcome!

Thanks! I am rather proud of that game, though Jay Stratton, our designer, did the majority of the design work.

I haven't yet fully figured out my role in this year's PaizoCon, but I was considering running a session of Fortune's Fool there!

Congratulations, Jason! I've enjoyed reading Fortune's Fool, even though I haven't gotten to play it yet.

Mr. Keeley, as a Paizo editor, which spell is better, Chain Lighting or Mad Monkeys?

That is the Independence of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship.

Being a 6th-level spell, Chain Lightning does way more damage, but I do love swarms of things...

I think I just need to know which you like better, monkeys or lightning.

Trick question! The answer is monkeys that shoot lightning!

Thanks, Mr. Keeley.

Please now create the spell: Chain Monkey Lightning.

Effect: A bunch o' monkeys pop out of nowhere and blast everything in a 40 foot radius with lightning and poop. the total damage is 6d6 +1d6 per 2 caster levels; half the damage is of type lightning and the other half is of type poop.

This lasts for a number of rounds equal to your charisma modifier (minimum 1).

Reflex Save for half; handing out bananas dispels the effect.

So, both the developers and editors regularly make raids on you violating your neutrality, and then the other side raids you pretending to be protecting your neutrality while the initial aggressors claim that nothing like that happened?

I may have said Neutral Zone when I meant No-Man's-Land.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

I think Diego may not appreciate that wording.

Mana Waste? Will the Nex vs Geb Adventure Path (when it finally arrives) be an actual transcriptions of bloody struggles for bureau dominance? Or better yet, publish such AP with reporting system included so the players playing that campaign will determine the fate of feud between editors and developers!

I thought the Heffalump was an editorial department thing. We'll have to hire someone new to get it back on our side of the building.

Crystal didn't understand the rules and gave it to Julie when she started. The Heffalump now roams free!

The Woozle is currently curled up in fear and terror in the warehouse somewhere.

Somewhere where the raptors can't reach, the morlocks can't climb, and the triops don't see.
