Pathfinder Encounter: Heaving Kobolds

Thursday, January 07, 2021

This week in The Shroud of Four Silences, the adventurers find themselves in pitched battle in the heart of the Fangspark kobolds’ warren. Enjoy this standalone encounter inspired by these events, which you can add to any Pathfinder second edition game, whether it’s one set in Otari (like Troubles in Otari, the Pathfinder Beginner Box, or this month’s debut volume of the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path), somewhere else in the Age of Lost Omens setting, or a campaign of your own creation.

Heaving Kobolds — Moderate 4

This encounter takes place underground, in or near kobold warrens. An ogre long ago moved in with the kobolds, demanding food and tribute from the smaller creatures. The kobolds have coddled the ogre somewhat, as they realize the brute provides a good defense of their territory, but they don’t realize that the ogre views the kobolds as ammunition rather than allies.

Creatures: This fight likely begins when the kobolds slink out of hiding to attack, but the ogre hurler joins the battle quickly, tossing the kobolds at intruders before entering melee. The kobolds fight bravely while trying to avoid being the closest one to the ogre. The overconfident ogre fights until slain, but the kobolds break and run as soon as the ogre falls.

Oh this is delightful! My players are gonna be headed for an underground adventure after they finish up Plaguestone, and this is perfect for them!

Loving these Otari-based encounters, characters and toolbox entries! But the spoilers are brutal (I'm only up to Chapter 6 of Shroud)... going forward, there's got to be a way to get folks up to the current chapter. :-)

This is hilarious and useful. Will find a way to use it.

We didn’t design the system to catch people up. We can consider more spoiler tags/hidden text. But you might want to make some Will saves vs reading ahead with these blogs too. ~AA!

I had a very different image in my head when I read 'Heaving Kobolds'. This encounter is much better, I think!

We've looked into ways to do this with the mass mailing system we use, and haven't found a great way to get that done. We will continue to explore our options, however, and should we do this again, we'll try our best to give people ways to catch up if they sign up late.

Yep, just a suggestion. I'm enjoying the story so far and failed each of my Will saves when reading the other Otari-based blog entries (saves I didn't mind failing given the return with GMs Toolbox, Encounters, and more). :-) I was late to First Edition but loved all of the information around Sandpoint. Moving into Second Edition, I'm hoping Otari will be fleshed out to a similar level of detail (even if much of it comes via the blog). Well done!

Haven't even gotten an email for the story even though I updated my settings weeks ago.

As shared on another thread, we discovered bugs in the system we are still chasing. Thanks for your patience as we work them out.
