PaizoCon 2016 Call for Volunteers!

Monday, February 29, 2016

Usually, I use the blog around the first of the month to announce GMs achieving their 5th star, changes in the Venture-Officer team, and the newest Campaign Service Coin recipients. I'm going to postpone that blog for now, to discuss something near and dear to many people's heart:

PaizoCon 2016

Pathfinder Society will be running most of the released Season 7 adventures, with particular emphasis given to those highlighting the season meta-plot and following the activities of the characters introduced in Serpents' Rise. We are also scheduling tables of Serpents' Rise, to give those who may have missed it a chance to play it before we enjoy its successor, Serpents' Ire, as our Special Event on Sunday evening. There will also be a full compliment of Season of the Runelords Adventure Card Guild scenarios, as well as a preview of the Gen Con Open run by Tanis, and a special scenario written by Venture-Lieutenant Tyler Beck.

There will be games offered during the afternoon slots Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, coordinated by Venture-Lieutenant Louis Manko Levite. If you are interested in running an afternoon slot game, please email me at pathfindersociety@paizo.com with details. When the PaizoCon schedule goes live, we will list all of the games, official and fan-run. We will also have a space onsite to list all games running during the afternoon breaks. Stop by PFS HQ for more information!

After careful consideration, we are not scheduling separate Core tables. If you wish to play a Core session, find a table of like-minded friends and sign up. When you sit down to play, let your GM know you wish to play a Core game.

We estimate needing over fifty GMs and Card Guild volunteers to ensure Pathfinder Society at PaizoCon runs smoothly. While most of the headquarter volunteers are returning from previous years, there are a couple of slots available. There are a limited amount of Tier 1 slots, so if you are interested, we recommend sending your email in quickly.

Volunteer slots are scheduled as follows:

SlotRPG/ACG GMsHQ
Friday Morning7:45 AM to 1:00 PM7:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Friday Evening6:45 PM to Midnight6:30 PM to 11:30 PM

Sunday Evening6:45 PM to Midnight6:30 PM to 11:30 PM

The breakdown of what benefits are available for each tier are:

TierBadgePrint ProductT-ShirtsStore CreditBoon/Reward
Tier 1 (6 slots)
Tier 2 (5 slots)
Tier 3 (3 slots)
Tier 4 (1 slot)

The details of each benefit are as follows:

  • Badge—A free 4-Day PaizoCon 2016 badge
  • Print Product—A FREE copy of one Paizo print product of your choice valued at $59.99 or less (excludes preorders or backorders). Email paizocon@paizo.com with your choice and it will be reserved for you at the convention store.
  • T-Shirts—Limited release t-shirts in purple (GMs)/orange (HQ) for new volunteers
  • Store Credit—Paizo.com store credit at $10 per slot
  • Boon/Reward—An PaizoCon exclusive boon (RPG) or reward (ACG)

Those interested in volunteering should email pathfindersociety@paizo.com with subject "PaizoCon 2016 Volunteer." Your email must include the following information:

  • Name
  • Paizo.com email—This is the address you use to login to paizo.com
  • Paizo.com username
  • GM or HQ
  • What slots you wish to volunteer
  • The tier of scenarios you wish to run

My plan is to review the emails on Friday, March 4th, and begin responding then. I will consider every email, but reserve the right to select volunteers who have worked at PaizoCon in prior years.

It's only 13 weeks to PaizoCon! Time is flying and it will be here before we know it. So, in the meantime—Explore, Report, Cooperate!

I haven't received a response. Does this mean that I was not selected to GM? Is the schedule still in progress?

Let's be honest. Last year at BOTH specials, one of the players bought you a beer.

My memory fades :) But, yes, I think that's right, and I think it was the same player. (3 or 4 of the players were the same at both tables.)

Any idea when the schedule will come out?

Is there any worry of PaizoCon selling out? I'm guessing no. I haven't bought a ticket, because if accepted as a Tier 1 GM, I won't need one....

Sorry, no theories as to when the schedule will be out for Paizocon.

I cannot speak as to when the schedule will be released, but the volunteer list is being finalized as we speak. HQ and ACG GMs have already been notified of their status. RPG GMs and RPG/ACG mix GMs should receive their confirmations as well as their GM schedule over the next 24-48 hours. I will post when the last of the confirmation emails go out so you will know if you were/not selected as a volunteer.

You are awesome!

At this time, all volunteer confirmations have been sent out. We had a large surplus of volunteer candidates (many more than we need) so if you did not receive a notice, your volunteer services were not required. We still hope you plan to attend.

There are always some cancellations each year as real life forces volunteers to change their plans. We keep a list of potential volunteers on a standby list so there is still a chance you could be asked to volunteer. There is also the possibility that if you volunteered but want to upgrade your tier status, cancellations might make that possible.

PaizoCon is sure to be an exciting and fun-tastic event. So, whether you are a volunteer or just a player, we hope to see you there!

so, I didn't see the volunteer thing until today and this is also my first Paizocon. I was wondering other than GM's what type of Volunteers are usually needed? (for next year, maybe) thanks

There is always a need peeps to work the HQ table. Beyond this and Gming, there really isn't all that much for which to volunteer. If you get there early enough, you can always swing by the PFS room and ask if there is anything you can do. Someone will put you to work doing something.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

We have HQ volunteers who help with setup, tear down, logistics, and mustering players as well as GMs. All the positions are currently filled for this year, but we occasionally have cancellations. If you would like to be added to the stand-by list, you can send an email to Tonya. Might as well CC me since I am managing the grid for her and will get the email anyway. We can also always use help setting up on Thursday morning/afternoon if you'll be around. It would be in an unofficial capacity, but a lot of people join in just for fun and to start interacting with folks they haven't seen in months or more. You are welcome to join us for that.

EDIT -- and what Jon said! :-)

The best chance for volunteering is to be watchful starting at the 1st of the year. Information about the convention starts to leak out around then, and the call for volunteers is usually in the Monday PFS blog later in January or February. The sooner you express interest, the better chance you'll get in. Most volunteer slots are generally first come, first serve. The same process can be said of GenCon as well.

Thanks for expressing interest in help out!

If I'm not cutting down a forest or out exploring the local area/gathering provisions I'll try to hop down to give a hand.

No idea what kind of mindset or physical condition I'll be in at that point, though.

We welcome any/everyone who wants to help out. The more help we have, the quicker set up gets complete and the sooner all involved can start drowning their sorrows in a good mug of ale or whatever your preferred method of celebration
