It's a Brand New Day!

Thursday, August 21, 2014

If you're a regular poster to the paizo.com messageboards, you may have noticed that we now have a link to our Community Guidelines in the reply box to each thread and private message. What is this change exactly? Well, we've aggregated a lot of feedback from our Website Feedback forum, email, and among our staff and these new guidelines are the result.

You might be wondering, "What does this change actually mean for me?" or "What is this meant to actually accomplish?" These new guidelines are intended to make our moderation goals more transparent and lessen the ambiguity of our decisions. It's also meant to better facilitate issues that may arise and enable our moderation staff to react more efficiently.

There are a lot of people signing up to post on paizo.com daily, and as Paizo and Pathfinder continue to grow in popularity, we want to make sure that your voice can still be heard. So check out the new Community Guidelines, let us know what you think, and thank you for your feedback and continued support!

Is it still OK to dot threads?

Paizo Glitterati Robot

Dotting is OK, though rather than dotting, you may want to check out the Listing feature (the "LIST" link right next to flags). This feature lets you keep lists of just about all the content on paizo.com :)

I think that we've *glasses* got some guidelines to follow *exits*

The Eleven Commandments of the Paizo Boards clearly spelled out and explained! Yay!

...and should anyone stray off the straight and narrow, there exists a Confessional Thread already set up for your absolution! ;)

Am I the only one that thought of Dr Horribles Sing Along Blog on this one? Here I thought Paizo was going to go hard core on people breaking posting rules. :) It's a brand new day

I still think the basic rule of "Don't be a Jerk" should cover 99.9% of the stuff that is wrong with the internet, but it is nice to have some clarity.

Nope. :)

I think "don't be a jerk" should still be included, but I can understand wanting cleaner / clearer policies.

That is so... useful! Wow.

I'm ashamed I've never bothered to really investigate what the heck that feature did until today.

Did I mention "wow"?

Thank you for mentioning this in a context that suggested "hey Anguish, you might actually like this".

I think those are great (though I'm sad to see the disappearance of the most important rule, which I always found quite succinct and not as ambiguous as it was sometimes portrayed).

Thank you for the guidelines.

With regards to the last point - the one about language - can I suggest that posts in other languages might be acceptable if they're accompanied by an English translation? Non-English speakers could just feed their own posts into Google Translate. This could be particularly useful in the PFS Grand Lodge as non-English speakers look for games.

:)

Now I have that song stuck in my head.

Which... I don't mind so much.

(After reviewing the guidelines I almost had 'Spam, Spam, Spam, glorious spam, wonderful spam!' stuck in my head, so I dodged that bullet!

Silver Crusade

+...dammit!

Still, very glad to see popcorn posts pointed out. Some threads might actually be salvaged without that self-fulfilling prophecy taking place. :)

Hrm, these look good.

Can I still refer to the removal of a post(s) by a moderator as "Chris's Orbital Bombardment Laser?"

:)

The problem with this is that the moderators won't necessarily know that the translation matches to the non English bit of speech.

It's true, but it's a fair assumption that moderators aren't reading every single post in the forums either, and that they're relying to a certain extent on the flagging system to find posts that violate the terms of use. Forcing those who want to connect to use English when that may not be their first language may be driving them away from the website, which (speaking as a PFS Venture-Officer) is not ideal, at least as far as PFS goes.

That said, it's a request and suggestion, and they're welcome to reject it if they feel it's too much extra work.

Out of curiosity, what is the point of someone posting "grabbing popcorn"? I don't get it.

It is used to indicatea belief that the thread will soon become a flame war which said individual is watching for entertainment. such a statement often seems to ignite said flame war.

Read and agreed.

Means they're planning on idly watching the flames fly (usually in amusement) until the thread gets locked because it is nothing more than a flame war/bait...so they're grabbing popcorn to set back and watch the thread explode more or less.

To watch the ensuing flame war.

Hey guys, in reference to the language FAQ, this actually isn't a new policy (it was just a bit buried because it used to live in our general FAQ list). While we may decide later on the adjust it, we just don't have the resources to properly support and moderate posts in languages other than English at this time. I know it's a bummer, but our team has plenty on our plates to keep us busy. We'll keep it in mind as things evolve with these new guidelines. :)

Ah...I see. Thanks for the explanation(s).

Good to have certain points underlined, although I too miss the "Don't be a jerk" rule.

However, I still think that there is a place for "+1" comments in certain types of threads, particularly those which ask in some manner for a list of who supports a certain idea. For example, if a poster were to ask about the possibility of a "Blood of the (Whatever)" game supplement, I would like to be able to show my support for the idea quickly without having to write a short essay answer. :)

When we flag something, why isn't SPAM one of the options that can be picked? Wouldn't this help you?

Paizo Glitterati Robot

Not particularly. Spam is pretty easy to identify and "Breaks other guidelines" works just fine. The flagging options bring posts to our attention pretty equally.

Thanks for the answer.

I'll use Breaks other guidelines then :)
