Ultimate Campaign: Behind the Screen

Thursday, May 9, 2013

In just over two weeks, Ultimate Campaign should hit your local game store or your mailbox. In the build up to the release of this new 256-page hardcover expansion to the Pathfinder rules line, we are showing off some of the things you will find inside.

This week, we are taking a look at Chapter 3, which is absolutely packed with new systems for GMs to use in their game. Each one of these sections is designed around one theme and they are easily added to any existing campaign when the story calls for that particular theme. For example, if the player's travel to a kingdom where honor is valued above all else, Ultimate Campaign includes four pages of rules on honor and how it can be incorporated into the game. Are the heroes tasked with exploring a great, uncharted wilderness? No problem, there are six pages detailing rules for exploration in a wide variety of terrains, covering everything from hazards of travel to random map generation!

All told, this chapter contains 15 sections detailing various rules systems you can add to your game, including rules for alignment shifting, making contacts, developing relationships, and retraining. This last section is sure to be popular at your table, allowing characters to spend some time to change almost everything, from feats and skills to class features and archetypes. You can even retrain your class levels, given enough time and a suitable teacher!

One of my favorite sections of this chapter includes rules for playing young characters, before they start their adventuring career. It includes rules for young members of all of the core races, guidelines for available classes, and tips for roleplaying and the types of encounters young characters might face. While this is only a short section at the end of the chapter, I can think of a number of games that would have greatly benefitted starting the story before the PCs became the heroes they are today.

That about wraps up this week. Next week, we are going to take a look at the final chapter of the book, dealing with kingdoms and war!

Wow, very cool. I think that I might like this section the best... random map generation? Very intriguing. The alignment shifting contacting relationship ideas will be welcomed as well. Definitely liking the reveals for Ultimate Campaign so far!

I am so looking forward to this to arrive

Other than the retraining (which will never happen in any game I DM), this section could be useful.
The "children" adventure rules might be neat. Sounds like PF's version of 0 level characters from 2nd edition.

I'm super stoked for the young adventurers section.

Also love the pic of Valeros. :)

I'm actually really happy to hear that the retraining will take both time, money, and actually finding a trainer. I think that'll be a good way to balance it. I also am excited to see the new exploration rules and the rules for playing young characters! Randomly generated map, here I come!

Does this chapter include details on building factions?

I actually really appreciate retraining rules (at least the idea, got to see how it actually works before final approval), I think of a PC who has a defined history, but finds himself in an unusual situation.
One example from a game I'm in now is our Wizard is an Evoker, but we found that the main enemy of the campaign has some insane SR, pretty much killing his whole character concept. Wouldn't you expect him to pour significant resources into actually being an effective spellcaster so he can you know, save the world or something?

Veleros's Orphanage is coming

Orphanage? I was thinking Daughter. Maybe from one of the many nights he enjoyed some Soft Company.

Though it might be a Son...

Retraining is a brilliant idea and I can't imagine any reasonable DM not allowing it. This allows a player to change their character naturally over time and avoid the trap of wanting to change their character by either killing their character off or retiring them. Anything that helps to keep organic leveled characters from being at a disadvantage to a freshly created high level character is a great addition to the game. Big thumbs up!

Sovereign Court

I'm very curious about retraining; I want retraining, I'm just very curious to see if Paizo came up with a brilliantly fair and balanced way of doing it.

Besides that, I like the idea of "rule packages" to use for specific themed campaigns.

15 new reasons to make this book truly live up to the word ULTIMATE! I am loving the previews! On either side of the screen, I cannot think of a book I have ever been more excited for! Thanks for helping me make it through another week of waiting! :D One more preview, one week later and to quote Igor Olman: "IT MUST BE MINE!!" :D

Thanks again for another awesome preview! Can't wait to see next week's glimpse of greatness! :D

Anything in here for PFS?

Scarab Sages

A whole chapter for Kingdom! Yay! Much better than the half a dozen pages in Kingmaker.

Agreed'd on this sounding like a good way to help organically played and built characters.

also wondering if this was the "unexpected" Valeros pic hinted at by SKR in Tuesday's blog thread

You'll end up in the Boneyard for that - but I bet it was worth it.

I don't think it would get you put into the boneyard any earlier than naturally would happen...but I am pretty sure she will take it into account...

By I love how this book is shaping up...my only fear is that it might take the Role out of Role-playing for some groups out there.

I want this for inspiration for some day taking another stab at writing my own campaign. I've done it before... I used to even consider myself good at it. Until the Adventure Paths came along of course, and I now realize what an amateur I am. Still... I think I have it in me somewhere. Maybe this book will make the difference.

If not... heck, there are so many APs already that I'll never have time to run them all. Paizo is a one company golden age for RPGs.

I'm really looking forward to this book! :D

Hmm, I wonder if the retraining rules will be allowed in PFS?

It all sounds great. I just hope that the kingdom-building parts of chapter 3 are compatible with the excellent 'Book of the River Nations' from Jon Brazer Enterprises. But whatever we get, it'll be a delight to read.

Really looking forward to more complete (and hopefully easier to track) kingdom-building rules. I just hope they triple-checked all their math for hex size vs area, travel times, etc. this go-round...

Retraining class features and archetypes ???

WWWAAAOOOOUUUUHHHH !!!

Just when I was thinking this book had me in heaven already

Probably something like "Oops, sorry for accidentally sending you to Hell. It seems you were actually due to Heaven. A mistyping of some sort, I guess. Now we just need to get this officially corrected in your file before sending you to your just reward. It might take some time though."

I thought Valeros was more like Ash from Evil Dead 2,

but that reply is close enough.

You, sir, are the Master.

@the_black_raven: This sums my feelings up pretty well.

Doted!!
i watch this book as an the GameMastery Guide for experienced Gamemasters, since the GMG was oriented for new Gms and have a little things to offer to me (actualy the semi-humanoid npc bestiary at the end of the books was the only thing i realy use, and no so often)...
