Pathfinder Battles Preview: Goblins on the March!

Friday, September 30, 2011

When we put together the set list for our first major Pathfinder Battles set, Heroes & Monsters, we knew it needed to contain several goblins. Ever since James Jacobs and Wayne Reynolds reimagined these classic monsters in the very first Pathfinder Adventure Path volume, “Burnt Offerings,” these little green-skinned bastards have been sort of unofficial mascots for the Pathfinder brand. They just had to be represented in the set.

The behind-the-scenes images below show the unpainted master sculpts of two of the goblins included in the Heroes & Monsters set. As WizKids’ sculptors pretty much translated our critters directly into three dimensions, we did not require any changes to their look.

The image below shows the goblins in their full-color glory. We asked WizKids to darken the greens a bit on these little guys, so the final production models will come off a little less day-glo than they appear here, but you can get a good sense of how nasty the goblins will look when they come chomping into your life in December!

They be plasticrack, you be food!

Next Week: I have no idea which images we’ll preview next week, but I am confident they will look awesome. Let me know what minis or Pathfinder Battles information you’d like to see, and I’ll do my best to reveal it here in seven days!

Erik, is there a complete list of minis in the set you can share with us yet?

Not yet, but I'm working on it. We will release this list before the product is in stores, and probably much sooner than that.

At some point, doesn't have to be this week, I'd really like to see the bases of these minis. I know you gave a small description in the product thread, but a picture is worth a thousand posts. :)

So noted. The bases look great, btw. I just need to figure out a way to show them off via the internet. I'll put something on this in an upcoming blog for sure.

Silver Crusade

How rigid are the bases? I recall some of the DDM bases were pretty flexible & didn't help some minis that were related to Plastic Man stand, ha ha.

Gobbies are lookin great, heck every preview looks great. Hoping to have enough cash to go after a case or it's buying singles or packs when they launch.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks to the Australian dollar Pathfinder Minis subscription (or even a case) are now out of my reach. Which sucks as these little guys look friggin' fantastic!

The three creatures quoted above are all in Heroes & Monsters. At least two of the goblins are common, and the Goblin Mystic (which we have not yet shown) is rare. I'm honestly not sure about the other goblin at the moment, as he was a very late addition to the set.

Too late to give him a torch? Or a torch & a dogslicer?

For the Rise of the Runelords set, (**spoilers**) I really hope to see:
Warchief Ripnugget (mounted or unmounted--either way is fine for me);
A goblin warchanter (not a deal breaker either way, but nice to have);
A goblin or two with torches and dogslicers, or perhaps one with just a torch;
Shadowmist;
Erylium;
Aldern Foxglove;
Shalelu;
Xanesha;
Lyrie Akenja;
Malfeshnekor;
The Skinsaw Man;
Sinspawn (hopefully 2 different ones--as commons);
Skinsaw Cultist (common);
One or both of the Dragons;
Dire Bear;
Runelord Karzoug (naturally);
I'm sure I can think of others. :-)

That's great to hear. Can you spoiler it for us a bit? I hate to compare, but how do they compare to DDM bases?

You might earn yourself some extra fried onions on your burger when you come out this way. ;)

I hear JPEGs are all the rage these days.

You're going to be very, very happy.

How about stuff from Serpent's Skull? I'd love to see some of that. We just started that adventure path. It's pretty hard to get good minis for representing giant crabs and sea urchins -lol

I'd love to see some Thrunefang Cannibals, Eurypterids and Dimorphodons. Those would be really helpful with the adventure.

Honestly, I'm happy to see more prepainted stuff of any kind. I love painting my own minis, but generally don't have the time or money to paint nearly often enough to populate the my games I'm running.

Scarab Sages

I'd like to see a miniature for some of the less common class/race combos.

They're not plastic, but the first two parts of Serpent's Skull are available right now in the Paper Minis licensed PDFs.

So I've got a request. I've seen a lot of talk about the miniatures that are being released under the Pathfinder Battles heading. What I haven't seen is any real mention of stuff to justify calling the product lines Pathfinder Battles instead of Pathfinder Miniatures or something similar. The second blog post that has the Pathfinder Battles tag mentions Encounter Packs. If those are what I think they are, then we've got something that puts the Battle in Pathfinder Battles. Could we hear more about those Encounter Packs? Also, if there is anything else planned for the Pathfinder Battles line like that, could we get more info along those lines in next week's post?

I'm not really sure what you mean about "Battles" either not being justified by the main set or being justified by the Encounter Packs. Can you be more specific?

The reason it's not called "Pathfinder Miniatures" is because that's the name of Reaper's line of unpainted metal minis. We needed something different, and "Pathfinder Prepainted Miniatures" or "Pathfinder Plastic Miniatures" just doesn't have a great ring to it.

Just a note that the Goblin Mystic is actually uncommon (as is the fourth goblin).

Pathfinder Battles sure does conjure up the idea of a skirmish type game. But I totally agree with many posters from other threads that a skirmish game should in no way overshadow the original purpose to provide miniatures for the Pathfinder RPG. But I do believe doing both is doable. IMHO - If a really fun skirmish game was designed, then more miniatures would be flying off store shelves.

So will they be bundled together 'in place of' a medium?

Yeah my friend saw that I had lots of DDM's. He thought he could get some cards he was missing, but was upset when I told them I threw them them out. I never even took them out of the bag.

My problem with DDM was that the minis were made for the miniatures game FIRST. Therefore we get left with some pretty useless minis for RPG.

I am OK with Battles being a game in itself as long as ridiculous miniatures are not made for it. Every miniature should ultimately have its goal as RPG useful.
