"This is the only teleportation circle I've seen," says Kaz, examining it for any clues as to its destination, "Unless someone noticed another one?"
How large is the building? I'm guessing we're more than 100 feet from the outside.

![]() |

Zak waits for a moment just in case somebody has found another, then sighs and says "I'll go first.
"If it takes me someplace close, I'll be able to contact Kaz telepathically to tell him. If it teleports me someplace dangerous that's nearby, he can just call me back. If it hurts me, it'll hurt him too. If he suddenly dies for no reason don't follow me."
"I don't think that's likely."
Zak rolls his eyes. "If I thought it was likely, I wouldn't do it! And if takes me someplace too far away, it'll break my connection to Kaz and by extension this plane and I won't be able to physically exist. But he can just call me back again and I can tell you that." He then strides into the circle.
A few moments later...
On the off chance it's within 100 feet:
"He says it's fine," Kaz reports, "He's outside." Kaz follows.
If it's further:
"Oh, he dissipated. Hang on."
Zak once again reappears. "I think it's okay," he says, "I saw outside before I stopped existing. But I didn't have a chance to look around, so I'm not 100% it's outside here. Probably?"
"That'll have to do, then."

Meadow quickly grabs the box and its contents, stashes it in her backpack, and rushes into the circle. "Come on everyone. You heard the runelord. Pirates!" The ranger waves at the shadow as she leaves. "Thanks shadow lady."

![]() |

Shayla shrugs and follows Meadow and Silence.

![]() |

Zak and Kaz confirm that the teleportation circle works and takes you outside. Everyone else scrambles through and arrives on what would normally be a lovely tropical beach.
This sun has started to set by the time you leave the Azlanti facility, painting much of the beach a soft crimson. The Grinning Pixie is silhouetted upon the shimmering waves, and several rowboats litter the beach. Eras, Zinthyra, and several others sit hunched down beside the rowboats.
They’re surrounded by several other figures. Abruptly, thirty masked figures emerge, with sharp features and even sharper blades. They spread out between the crew and the rowboats.
“It’s a trap,” Eras hisses to you as you get your bearings. “These pirates give the Mordant Spire elves a bad name, using their cause as an excuse. I’m sorry, they caught us unaware and...”
The brigands hurry from the undergrowth and form into two groups of twenty, all wearing masks. They outnumber Eras’ crew almost two to one. From their group, one figure emerges wearing a half-face mask and decorative attire which signifies her position as captain.
She leaves her blade sheathed and stands at the head of the crew. In accented Common, she says, “Pathfinders! Under the most recent negotiations with your organization, all Azlanti relics within this region fall within our protectorate. If you wish to avoid an unfortunate diplomatic incident, I would put them nicely down on the ground and walk away”
“Don’t listen to her!” snaps Eras. “There’s no such agreement in place and the ‘diplomatic incident’ she speaks of is a ruse. They’re little more than brigands hoping to win standing among her fellows by stealing a wealth of relics. Pillagers and looters, nothing more.”
The captain sneers, turning her gaze away from him. “Let’s not mince words, then. Hand over your treasure.”
This does not have to go to combat. The scenario has instructions for how to resolve the encounter should you choose to Submit to the pirate’s demands OR to Negotiate with the Pirates instead of just going to combat, which is of course an option also. But there’s an opening here for a bit of parley and RP.

![]() |

Shayla is not really one for negotiation but she waits...

![]() |

That's not even a good story. If we had an agreement like that, wouldn't they be the ones breaking it to steal what we would be giving them anyway?
Yes, I know.
"We really don't have a wealth of relics. We might have with more time to figure out how to extract things properly, but we had to rush because... well, pirates were attacking. Do you see us carrying a load of treasure?"
Kaz holds up the wand. "We found this wand. Do you want this wand?"
A little nervous about trying to fight the pirates, Kaz is even less interested in surrendering to them.

![]() |

Meadow sighs. "Okay fine. Don't hurt us. This place was mostly cleaned out of anything truly valuable, but we did find this."
She reaches into her pack and pulls out a stick covered with bells. A few of the bells are noticeably missing. "We found this in some sort of time bubble that kept it from totally rotting away over the centuries. We think it's some a planar key of some sort. We didn't have a lot of time to examine it. You can have it. Just let us go."

"Oh yes ma'am," says Kaz politely with a vigorous nod, "I'm sure we all noticed that. You've made it quite clear."
He shrugs apologetically. "I suspect my compatriots are annoyed at me already for allowing you to take that much, and I've already told you there wasn't much else. There was a flooded library. All the books were ruined by water, except the one that was on fire. Things happen to ancient sites."

Well, it didn’t have to go to combat, but it certainly seemed like that was where it was headed as the two parties squared off against the other. Then Kaz opened his mouth and sealed the deal.
”Snarky little lizard,” the Captain snarls at Kaz’s comments. ”You overestimate yourselves, Pathfinders. We are Mordant Spire elves. We have been scouring the seas of your kind for hundreds of years, and now your bones will be left here to be picked clean by the crabs upon this beach. And you will be forgotten.”

Meadow, that’s a Crit Fail on the Bon Mot. If you choose to keep the roll, you suffer the penalty instead.
Kaz is a bit confused about how all this is his fault. But once he gets it, he calls forth the Captain’s greatest fear. Whatever it is that she saw, you are certain you don’t want to experience it yourselves as the color drains from her face and she turns her eyes away from the battlefield.

She stares hard at the Pathfinders before turning to her peer, Captain Eras the Needle. ”I see you’ve bested my sailors. Very well. I request to be allowed to return to my ship with my remaining crew. You would not be able to man two ships, and sailing mine through these waters without me would be hazardous if you were to encounter others of the Spire.”
Eras surveys the damage that his own crew has taken in the mass melee and stoically agrees. ”I cannot condone your actions, but trying to man two ships with you and your crew in a brig would indeed be dangerous. You will remain on the beach until my standard is out of sight over the horizon. Failure to comply will result in cannon and magical bombardment. And you will vow not to attack Pathfinder ships within sight of this island.”
Your opponent agrees to the terms and Eras directs his crew and you to make for the Pixie.
Riding in the tender on the way back, Zinthyra congratulates you for your help. “I know I jested with you that you were only worthy of carrying my shovels but, in truth, I was genuinely impressed with your work. The brigands back there have no idea about the key. It’s going to be so much fun seeing what’s behind that door, isn’t it? Tell me you’ll come along when we open up the seal and discover what other secrets Lesolethe hid away!”

The dwarf addresses himself to the pirate's chief.
We told you not to fight. We told you. But didn't listen. They never listen. Even if we tell them every time.

The young ranger's face lights up as she realizes what her friend just did. She gives the owl a big hug, sticks her tongue out at the pirate captain and turns to walk back to the Grinning Pixie.

"Hmph. We could put her in the brig and leave her ship here."
"I'm not really comfortable leaving her to attack non-Pathfinder ships either," Kaz agrees quietly, but doesn't argue with the venture-captain, "Although really, they didn't actually seem all that dangerous."
He remembers that she defeated the venture-captains, and apparently quite quickly and easily. He hopes they didn't overhear that. "Wait... is she weak or are we that strong? I suppose I have been learning more powerful spells...
"Oh no! Oh dear, is Silence sick? Oh my, I'm afraid I don't have a spell for curing illness."
