So you have some time to discuss amongst yourselves I would highly recommend at least 1 (and probably more) players have some kind of note taking system. There are a number of NPCs, locations, etc. and keeping track of all of them can be a bit much.
If you want feel free to create one or more Slides or some other shareable site where everyone can access the information.

Okay, that's simple enough.
I've created Gameday XIII - 'Gallows of Madness - A Foul Breed' Player Notes
As we go places and meet people I'll try to keep it updated, but I encourage other players to add notes as well (it's editable).
Guardian XI |
I have started collecting details in the Player Notes slides. Everyone feel free to update/annotate them as you see fit.

That's great--thanks for setting it up!
Guardian XI |
Oof. I haven’t updated it since before our party met the mayor. I can do so tonight but if someone can be me to it feel free.
Jakeric |
@Guardian XI: It's perfect for an investigation-type mission before there can be a lot of little clues and details that are very easy to forget in a long play-by-post games. I've run some games where the party goes really off-track because the players have understandably forgotten something they learned months ago in real time and just a few days ago in game time.
@GMing: I'm away for 48 hours, please bot as necessary.
Jakeric |
An early heads'-up that starting on October 12, I'll be away for a couple of weeks without Internet access.
Vreekka The Brainiac |
I'm traveling today - will post tomorrow.

I'm off and away for 16 days--please bot as necessary. The game's a blast--great GM and fellow PCs!

The numbers should correspond to spots on the map. If you want more information on any number it would require a Diplomacy to Gather Information.
5. Pricknettle's Potions and Poultices
6. Temple of Erastil [Visited]
7. Gunty's Hearty Breads
8. Dependable Drummady's
9. Petrello's Haberdashery
10. Witch's End Tavern [Visited]
11. Saringallow's Sundries
15. The Gallows' Graveyard [Visited]
16. Town Hall [Visited]

Don't forget that Vreekka will also need to make a Spellcraft check in addition since Detect Magic does not identify an item on its own. Luckily Vreekka has Spellcraft and can take 10 (assuming Guidance) for a 20.
I thought that the Craft check replaces the Spellcraft check? The description of the alchemical tool Reagent Paper would suggest so. Doesn't matter right now when Vreekka uses Take 10, but would be good to know for future adventures...
Vreekka identifies the vials as one Elxir of Vision and one Elixir of Hiding and the wand as a Wand of Bless Weapon (10 charges).
I don't think she can identify wands, only potions. ;-)

On Reagent Paper: All the item does is provide a +2 Alchemical bonus (which means it would stack with other bonuses) to either Craft (Alchemy) or Spellcraft checks to identify potions.
On Vreekka's class ability: Note what you wrote, "When using Craft (alchemy) to create an alchemical item, an alchemist gains a competence bonus equal to his class level on the Craft (alchemy) check. In addition, an alchemist can use Craft (alchemy) to identify potions as if using detect magic. He must hold the potion for 1 round to make such a check."
However Detect Magic does *not* identify potions per se; it merely detects if the item (potion) is magical and how strong the aura is. For reference here's the Detect Magic entry:
Which is where the Spellcraft skill comes into play:
From 'Check': "This skill is also used to identify the properties of magic items in your possession through the use of spells such as detect magic and identify."
From 'Action': " Attempting to ascertain the properties of a magic item takes 3 rounds per item to be identified and you must be able to thoroughly examine the object."
And 'Task': "Identify the properties of a magic item using detect magic 15 + item’s caster level"
On the wand: Oops! That's what I get for trying to hurry a post without paying attention! We'll say some wandering genius helps the group out with some information. :)

I can’t say I have seen or considered that interpretation of that rule intersection.
The wording of the ability indicates to me the craft alchemy check replaces the spellcraft check made to ID potions and the detect magic mention is clarification that the spell isn’t necessary to this process. Otherwise why would it even mention the craft skill if all the ability allowed was to detect if a potion was magical?

I wish the authors would've made it clear. My interpretation is also based on the alchemist class does NOT have 0 level spells. In fact they don't receive Detect Magic at all on their spell list.
In the text Vreekka provided the only mention is substituting Craft (alchemy) for Detect Magic - not Spellcraft.Which is made even weirder because Alchemists do get Spellcraft as a class skill and the Identify spell at 1st level.
Again I think the intention was for an alchemist PC to use their Craft (alchemy) in place of only Detect Magic in the 'Is this magical? / Okay what is it?' situation.
Cannoli Jones |
I’m cool with the interpretation and it doesn’t seem to really change much for the class.
The alchemist was not the cleanest class written, that’s for sure. I think a lot of stuff was thrown in at the last minute to even make it function. They get almost fully functioning magic spells but for basically themselves only and a book to store their spells that they need spellcraft to write but they aren’t a caster and don’t get cantrips but also can cast wands like a caster but can’t cast scrolls.
I love them but are annoyed by the issues they add to the game.

Agreed it's written as if there was a concept in mind but a failure in the execution.

Incidentally one useful item for classes like alchemists and investigators who get spellcraft but not detect magic is a discerning wayfinder from the Pathfinder Society Primer. The enhancement costs 5PP and functions as a normal wayfinder except it casts detect magic at will in place of the light spell.

Where is this Primer at? I've never even heard of it. :(

I'm going to be traveling from later today until the 28th and I'm not totally sure if I'll be able to post during that time. If needed feel free to bot Victor (there are some botting instructions at the end of his profile).

My guess would be he'd need to make skill checks in the near future.

I'm back and mostly alive! I'll try to get caught up and get a post up in Gameplay in about 12 hours or so.

Okay, that's simple enough.
I've created Gameday XIII - 'Gallows of Madness - A Foul Breed' Player Notes
As we go places and meet people I'll try to keep it updated, but I encourage other players to add notes as well (it's editable).
I updated the NPC list a bit to reflect our conversation with the cobbler. There's still lots more we could put in. I wonder if we should make a sheet with a list of clues (like the "follow Yellow Boots" comment the bird made)?

Exactly this :) I’d stopped editing because I sensed that no one else was finding them helpful. If that’s not the case let’s create whatever notes we need there.

@GM: I'm off on a 9-day stint sans computer. Please bot Jakeric & Grizzlebin until I get back. (and don't stress about using spells or putting them in harm's way--that's part of the fun!)
@Guardian XI: I've added a couple of NPCs and a Clues slide. I don't really know how to make tables on the slides, but I'll try to add some more stuff when I get back.

Cannoli will hand Grizzelbin some rock candy and he can enjoy it from the back. He looks like he has had a hard life.

Day Job Craft (Alchemy), Crafter's Fortune: 1d20 + 9 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 5 = 30 Nice! :-D
Can I also add the +1 competence to create alchemical items? I think it does apply...
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 4 No... :-/ I blame Cannoli Jones' acting! :-P
Guardian XI |
No boons for robots: 1d20 ⇒ 1 Definitely not!

boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 18
day job (Diplomacy via Caravan vanity): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
(If I still have a my reroll at the end of the game I'll use it to reroll the day job roll and take 10 for a total of 23 including GM stars)
Cannoli Jones |
Cannoli’s acting was for Mr. Roboto and him alone, obviously.
I believe you cannot use the competence bonus to make alchemical items for your Dayjob due to it only being a bonus on crafting the items, not on all craft: alchemy checks.
There is a Dayjob faq out there somewhere I will dig up, hopefully it will clarify.

I've updated the clues some more. I wonder if we could have a sample of the purple slime identified by some expert in town? It seems like a pretty big clue to whatever weirdness is going on in Saringallow.

Since I'd consider this a DC 5 (at best) Knowledge check for any of your brainiacs, an empty glass vial like for a potion, oil, etc. would suffice to collect a sample.
