Zeldones and everyone else who speaks Goblin can make a small part of the conversation.
"We're not going to help a plug-ugly arsemonger like you."
Cerrus Falto |
While Netkin was examining the insignias, Cerrus spoke about what he remembered after consulting his tome. "From what I seeing from my notes, Hellknights view their insignia very highly, almost as a sacred symbol of sorts. I can't explain why members would leave these behind; they normally take great precautions for them."
When Resa brought the group's attention to the noises in another room, Cerrus turns his focus to that task. "Zeldones, should you go first since you can speak to them?" With that suggestion in mind, Cerrus makes way for Zeldones to move to the front.

Which of the voices sound like goblins, and which sound like halflings?
"It's an argument. Someone wants a guide into the dungeon below the Citadel, and someone else is refusing."
Hey, my post last night was my 44,000th to the boards. No intervention needed <g>.
Resa Dermade |
"So they need a guide, we could do that. Why do we not offer and be respectful to those who do live here? What harm could be in that?" Resa queries to those gathered close by, keeping her voice low
Alseta GM Delta Arena |
It sounds like the one demading to see the dungeons beneath the citadel is the halfling, and you do notice some concern on the other voices.
***
According to the information in your tome there is also an underground complex underneath the citadel.
There is no map, but the notes suggest there is a main hall connected to a central hub and rooms set up in two wings, with one wing being set up for habitation and the other one being set up for mortuary purposes. There is also a suggestion that there might be a second undeground level undearneath very similar to the first.
Cerrus Falto |
Cerrus consults his tome quickly, finding the earmarked page about the citadel. "Not exactly a map, just a paragraph of notes describing the layout of the rooms beneath ground. Possibly two floors in total."
Hearing that this argument is between goblins and a halfling, Cerrus concurs with Netkin. "It's likely not a coincidence that our trek into this citadel finds us on the path of a halfling. We may not want to help them, especially if they are making demands the goblins are refusing."
Turning to Zeldones, Cerrus gestures to indicate that he should lead the way into the next room. "I believe you have the best chance at leading diplomatic efforts, assuming this situation is salvageable."
Zeldones |
Zeldones smiles a little nervously. "Confronting an arsonist magician and a band of unhappy goblins. Nothing to it!" It might have been easier to skip this and jump straight to the uncomfortable family drama...no, this is still better. He approaches the door and knocks.
Ardoinel Oreflame |
Ardoinel nods at the conversation.
"It seems the gods smile on us today, then. We've aimed high, planned well, now let's strike while the iron is hot," he says to Zeldones.
He waits for the response to their...surprisingly polite intrusion into the conversation.
Alseta GM Delta Arena |
As Zeldones knocks on the iron gates to the courtyard, the growl turns into a roar, followed be the sound of mighty jaws snapping together. The conversation between the Goblins and the Halfling stops and you can hear a few screams from startled Goblins.
The roar and the snapping jaws sound significantly closer than the voices speaking in goblin.
Resa Dermade |
Resa, being close to the door has her long ear pressed against it, a soft clang from her many piercings heard as she comes back and tells the group, if it was not obvious " We seem to have some type of beast on the other side of the door. Perhaps we can look through and perhaps feed it something, and then take care of our arsonist? That would make the most sense to me. Unless Netkin this is some family member, then you perhaps should take lead dealing with them." Her words were soft, a strange focus on her face as she never did fully look away from the door. She had her star knife out ready incase something burst through it.
Netkin Bigpot |
Netkin stares at Resa with an unsettled look on his face. "Why would it be some family member? I live alone with my grandma... And there are plenty of halflings out there!"
He sighs. "I have some more jerky..." He hands some meat from his own rations to the elven woman.

Ardoinel listens to the sound of the roar, trying to figure out want manner of beast they were dealing with.

Zeldones |
"From what the halfling just said, the creature belongs to the goblins. The halfling doesn't think much of it, whatever it is. It sounds like we'd have to go through it to get to them. I also don't think they heard me knocking." The human scratches the back of his head uncertainly. "Cerrus, do you know if there's a back way? That--whatever it is--doesn't sound friendly, and the Bumblebrashers probably wouldn't like us killing their pet."
Alseta GM Delta Arena |
More terrified screams reach you, along with another roar in response.
"Liars!"
Ardoinel Oreflame |
Ardoinel may not understand the words, but he hears the fear easily enough.
"We need to move, now!"
He attempts to open the gate.
Is it locked?
Alseta GM Delta Arena |
The door is unlocked and opens up easily. In front of you a short flight of stairs leads down to an open-air courtyard surrounded by imposing octagonal walls. A few errant milkweeds and tufts of crabgrass protrude from the cracked cobblestone flooring. The ground to the west is sunken in, creating a natural pool of fetid rainwater. To the north, the battlementshave partially collapsed into a huge mound of stone and wooden rubble, under which some sort of reptilian creature has been crushed. The top half of a flight of wooden stairs rises up to the battlements above the collapsed section of the walls. A thick rope dangles down to within a few feet of the top of the rubble pile, affixed with a grappling hook to the lower portion of the stairs. On the ground near the rubble pile and the colapse stairs lay several crude swords, bows and arrows.
On the other side of the courtayard, scraping at the top of the rubble pile, there is a growling, dragon-like creature. The creature does not look pleased, opening its mouth towards the battlements above, hoping for food to drop down into its mouth.
The battlements above stand 25 ft. above the courtyard’s ground, and are cornered by cicular watchtowers. To the southwest, the reddish smoke of a bonfire rises slowly to the sky. While the shouts from the goblins and the halfling are centered to the northeast. There are a few goblins on the battlements, as well as a halfling man holding another goblin at the knifepoint. It is clear that these are the two parties arguing in goblin.
I have mark in red on the map where the encounter would trigger. If you advance you can position your characters there or before that point for your initial positions.
Resa Dermade |
Resa nods absently at Netkin, her eyes focused on the dragon creature. Such a prize would really be worth talking on, and would surely impress her friends. If she was able to take it out, maybe she could get some gold for it, maybe something good. It was a dragon right? And that meant maybe she can stay and eat
" Netkin, your family is strange, and you are my favorite. Please do not turn out like them. Holding innocent goblins at dragon maw is rude I feel. Let us solve this." And with that Resa will rush forward towards the dragon creature, star knife ready to stab deep in it.
Netkin Bigpot |
"I told you, we're not from the same family - except perhaps in a metaphorical way..."
Netkin quits his plaintive protesting when Ardoinel urges the group forward. With no option to back away, he once more puts away the useless jerky, and steps in the courtyard.
"Wow," he whispers under his breath when he spots the dragon-like creature. Netkin's eyes widen, and though he keeps clear of the beast, he can't keep his eyes off it. He's seen drawings of dragons in books, of course. Plenty of them, and some of them very realistic. But to see one up close...
Arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Identify the creature?
There's some commotion on top of the battlements, he notices distractedly. He looks up to see one goblin in something of a pickle, and visibly at the mercy of a halfling's blade. Perhaps this was the arsonist they were looking for? He certainly didn't look friendly.
He snaps back to what is happening just in front of him - that is to say, Resa moving to the dragon with murder in her eyes. "Wait! Are you sure this is the priority?" he points to the battlements. "It doesn't seem like it can reach them!"
Cerrus Falto |
Cerrus can't understand the back and forth in goblin, but, like Ardoinel, he does understand the screams. "We don't have time to look for another way in. We need to help the goblins."
Cerrus forms up behind Ardoinel as he opens the gate, sword and tome in hand. To the group, he calls out "Let's do what we were sent here to do!"
Ardoinel Oreflame |
"It can't reach them, but he can toss one of them down there," Ardoinel says looking up at the gathering on the battlement. "And it looks like that's his intention. Let's go!"
He marches out by Netkin to protect him, banging his rapier's pommel against his buckler to get the dragon's attention.
"HEY! YOU WANT A MEAL?! COME AND GET US!"
Ellaeaanda |
After bypassing the unhelpful bugbear hermit, Ellaeaanda silently follows the party, as if in an unobservant trance. Only when Resa charges headlong into battle does she rouse from her dreamy state.
“The spark we seek threatens murder for mysteries below.” With bow in hand she advances through the door and flicks her gaze upwards at the halfling before dropping her violet eyes to assess the roaring dragon-like beast. “The root must be cleansed before we can reach the crown.”
Perception on halfling: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 1 = 22
Resa, I hope you don't mind that I've moved your token to match the action described in your post. Please feel free to reposition her if what I've done does not match your intent.
Alseta GM Delta Arena |
Netkin It is most unusual, but you have seen this creature in books. It is a Grauladon or “Mud Drake,” a distant offshoot of dragons. They are generally found in tropical swamps and jungles, where they make their dens in fetid ponds and shallow shores. There, they will hunt more than they can eat, guard the corpses of their prey, and scavenge it little by little as the meat rots. Some say that their breath is so foul that it can make people sick.
***
Resa based on his height, and his body physical condition, it makes sense that the size of his feet and the preassure created by his steps would leave the tracks you followed outside the town. Not only that, but he is not alone, hidding in the half-collapse tower is one of his fire elementals. Fortunately, he seems hesitant about killing the goblin in his hands, but he is fidgeting, and near the end of his limited patience.
***
The Grauladon turns around with heavy steps to face towards you, its eyes focusing directly on Ardoinel. It growls at the clang of the rapier hitting the buckler.
Ardoinel’s Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Cerrus’s Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Ardoinel closes his eyes and begins banging the pommel of his sword on his shield in rhythm with a dwarven forge chant. As he does, the air begins to shimmer with heat, and puffs of smoke begin coming from his mouth with each word. Resa Dermade |

Ignoring Resa, the creature moves towards the Dwarf with heavy steps. As it approaches, it turns slightly sideways and swings its tail.
With the wide, powerful, swing of its tale, it sweeps both Ardoinel and Cerrus off their feet.

Casting frostbite; DC 15 basic Fort save or take 7 HP cold damage. Then activating arcane cascade stance.
Ellaeaanda |

Zeldones
The grauladon seems doesn't seem to be too bothered by the cold arround it.
Ellaeaanda
The halfling up above seems to hesitate and shakes his head. ”What’s happening now?! Who are you people?!”
The grauladon strikes you as fairly well defended, with thick scales and no noticeable weaknesses. It also seems pretty alert but not terribly fast. No weaknesses but its lowest Save is Reflex.
Netkin
The vial of bottled lightning arcs too wide, breaking on the tail of the grauladon. The electricity arcs lazily only across its tail. It misses but it takes the splash damage… IDK if Cerrus and Ardoinel take splash damage since the Player Core contradicts the GM Core on that. I’ll post the quotes in discussions.
Cerrus
Theorizing that it is a fresh water creature, you spill some salt water on your blade, hoping that it might affect the graudalon. You then trace the patterns over your weapon with your tome and strike at it. But the scales on the creature makes your blade bounce back. No weaknesses, in fact it seems like the creature is wide awake. It is immune to the Paralyzed and Sleep conditions.
Ardoinel
Once again, the scales of the mud drake are too strong for the weapon to go through and harm it.
Fairly unlucky round as far as strikes are concerned.
Netkin Bigpot |
Netkin blinks in disbelief when his vial - and his friends' blades - ricochet off the graudalon's tail. "All right then," he mutters to himself, foraging in his bag for a tanglefoot bag. "Let's see if it can stay in one place... Hopefully while we run away..."

"Erm. Guys. Are you sure we can take it?" he calls out to Cerrus and Ardoinel hesitantly. "It seems tough..." If he notices the halfling calling out to them, he's obviously distracted by the threat right in front of the party.
