GM Erich |
Clarence and Mia finish off the last two grave-workers with quick strikes. Alas, only Ulvard has suffered a wound (both physical and mental).
Sorry, Ulvard for the initiative kill-steal.
Combat Over!
Zug
Inka
Clarence
Mia
Ulvard -10 damage
Pink Foe -10 damage <dead>
Amanita/Barry
Blue Foe -18 damage <dead>
Zug gets the first granted hero point to even things out
A little urchin girl scampers in as the crowd thins (a bit dejected at the brevity of the brawl) and confers with Vionnia in the window to record the results of the fight on a slip of paper before running off.
Vionnia emerges from the building and gives you a purse of coins (20 silver for this battle). "Well, that was a bit anti-climactic... So, its off to Crownsgate, and the next fight, perhaps more of a challenge, I hope!".
--------------------------
Along the way, as promised, it is time to get in her good graces...
You have about 45 minutes to travel and along the way you can talk to her and get to know her better. We will break this time into three social rounds of Discovery and Influence. Each of you can make one of those rolls each round.
Skills that can be used for Discovery on Vionnia include either a DC 13 Heraldry Lore, a DC 18 Perception check, or a DC 16 Society check.
If you use Discovery, you can learn one of the following (two on a critical success):
Let me know which one(s) you are aiming for with your Discovery roll.
----------------
Once you know (or simply guess) what skills might influence her you can use your turn to try a skill to Influence her. Bonuses granted for role-play.
Let's do Round 1! Everyone is up.
Clarence The Hunter |
Clarence attempts to impress (influence) Vionna by demonstrating his physical prowess.
"I am Clarence. As you can see from the earlier fight. I can hit hard! I can carry heavy loads with ease!"
Athletics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Ulvard |
Ulvard claps Clarance on the back.
"Ulvard will buy Clarance Ale!" he loudly proclaims.
"Ale is good for bruises." he adds sadly.
He spends the time mixing up reliving the recent battle with Clarence and trying to chat-up Vionnia.
perception DC 18: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 skills to influence her.
Inka Sator |
Not wanting to intrude on Clarence’s attempt to impress Vionnia, Inka simply listens and observes the woman as they walk to Crownsgate. Along the way, she praises Mia’s prowess. “That was some nice shooting back there! Is archery standard training for a war and exploration correspondent, or did you pick that up separately?”
Perception DC 18 (Discovery): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Wow, that's 3 crits already! I think I'll learn:
1) Which skill that can Influence Vionnia has the lowest DC
2) One of her personal biases
Mia Efimerida |
Mia sings a hymn with warlike hope:
"Oh, how noble to give your blood,
to face your foes without fear of death,
please, Psomeira, bless and heal me,
so I may bleed again on another day!",
and Ulvard's wounds close with the bardic magic.
"Now, for the report, how was it, Clarence bravely charged in, the clear cowbell giving a rhythm to his steps..." she thinks aloud as she pulls out a new paper and starts writing.
Perception (discovery): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 Let's go with resistances as Inka just took what I had thought about taking.
Healing hymn, sustain for 4 rounds on Ulvard heals 8 damage. Trying to refocus by writing bardic reports, before next combat.
GM Erich |
From the four of you so far...
She admires Clarence's prowess, but doesn't seem particularly impressed.
Inka's observations lead to her to realize that Vionnia is actually a noble of some sort here in Oppara, but must have fallen out of favor to be working for this racket.
As such, Inka also surmises that Vionnia wouldn't like being dismissed or ridiculed because of her noble upbringing and any attempts to do so might lead to a bad outcome.
Further, Mia realizes that although Vionnia enjoys vigorous arguments and jesting; direct threats, physical or otherwise, will only make her confrontational.
Piecing together what you know...
Underworld Lore to demonstrate the required knowledge to help her navigate the hidden societies and gangs or Oppara Lore to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of Taldan politics would be the easiest ways to Influence her.
Two more to go in this round...
Zug Cowbell |
Society (Discovery): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Zug tries to think what really makes pretty humans like Vionnia going. He is quite sure there is nothing like some cowbell music touch the soul. But what kind of music? Heavy beats? Complex melodies?
Weaknesses are undiscovered , so let’s try that
Ulvard |
What did Ulvard? discover?
The big man hops along to Mia's jaunty tune. Offering her a big grin he suggests that "And Mia is even better than Ale!"
GM Erich |
@Ulvard figured out one of the lores to influence, as did Inka.
After a few more minutes of conversation, Zug figures out that Vionnia is interested in powerful people with connections to improve her noble family’s standing.
Offers of valuable connections will reduce influence check DC’s by 1.
Only Amanita remains this round. Just Influence skills left to Discover...
GM Erich |
Round 2! Everyone is up. You know Underworld Lore and Oppara Lore can be used to influence, are there others?
Amanita you can roll twice...
Ulvard |
Ulvard has hunted prey in the wilderness, but he was beginning to realize that working the city has some similarities. First you needed to understand how your target moved. What spooked, them, what type of berries they liked.
He points his keen eyes and ears toward Vionia.
perception - disvoery: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Inka Sator |
Inka continues quietly observing their handler, figuring that her skill at convincing people to pay their taxes might not be the best choice here.
Perception DC18: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Wow, Inka’s dice are on fire! Figuring out more skills to influence Vionnia is all that’s left, right?
GM Erich |
She takes a particular liking to the halfling and along the way to the next fight, through interactions with some of the locals who inquire about the bouts, Inka and Ulvard realize that many of the social skills can be used to Influence her. Namely, Performance, Diplomacy and Deception (in increasing order of difficulty). There is one more Influence skill left to Discover, then it is time to just Influence.
Round 2! Amanita, Clarence, Zug, Mia are up.
Clarence The Hunter |
Feeling rather injured since he's unable to impress Vionna with his Athletic prowess, Clarence decides to see what does make her tick.
Perc: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
He notices, instead, that everyone has feet...
Mia Efimerida |
Mia follows the hints found out by Ulvard and Inka.
She starts talking to Vionna about the stories of Iblydos: "The most famous of our legends, at least in my circles, are those that glorify ultimate sacrifice and determination. I'll give you one poem:
'Son, gone to battle,
losing his arm and sent home.
Mother, sorrowful, mourns:
Oh, what shame is this,
not defending us anymore,
with one arm you can hold a spear?"
Her alto voice, with strength and clarity, suits the poem well. She looks around at the city, gestures around, and comments: "Here, you seem to be a bit more forgiving. And we do have tragedies and comedies, but even they tend to be quite strong in the misfortunes of life."
Performance (Oratory): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
GM Erich |
"Quite the poem, Mia. If you survive today, will you scribe that for me as a gift?" Vionnia requests. One Influence success
Mia Efimerida |
"Of course, what would poems be if they aren't shared?" Mia promises Vionnia.
"We've clearly got the right audience here, I even saw the first dance to my hymn. Some Shelynites in Absalom wanted me to 'Tone it down with the blood'" she says, delighted of the reception to her art.
She doesn't seem to flinch a bit at the mention of her possible death today.
Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
Sorry for my absence, all, got swamped with homework for a bit.
Amanita, learning that perhaps their appearance can be somewhat off-putting, waits for a moment.
Round 1: Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Upon the revelation that Vionna might be impressed with performance skills, they start ruffling through their bag, after a moment pulling out several puppets.
She starts talking to Vionna about the stories of Iblydos: "The most famous of our legends, at least in my circles, are those that glorify ultimate sacrifice and determination. I'll give you one poem:
They wait for Mia's poem to be done (not wanting to steal the spotlight from a fellow performer) before jumping in. [b]"Yes!! Actually, I was recently in a production of Rise of the Goblin Heroes: A True and Accurate Account, here, I should still have a script somewhere--"
Drawing several puppets from their bag, all of varying quality and make (the group containing both a very-realistic marionette and a sock puppet with googly eyes) of a few goblins, one wearing a crown, a wolf, and a human.
Act V, Scene 1
Enter ZUSGUT, CRIMSI, GRENEK, SIATHORN, MITZI (a wolf, not a dog), PIZAZZ, and ULTHUN (a human).
ZUSGUT (from atop his throne): I see the great heroes have returned! But who is this with you?Speak, brave knight.
ULTHUN: Oh mighty chief of the goblins, whose wit and skill are unsurpassed, I am called Ulthun, Watcher-Lord of Lastwall. Alas, that land has been overrun by undead and is no more!
GRENEK (hops forward): Is true. Undead everywhere.
SIATHORN: But we helped them escape! The longshanks. Not the undead.
MITZI: Woof!
CRIMSI: I helped collapsed the tunnel behind us. It was great!
PIZAZZ (huffily): I found people who appreciate my singing. Here, let me show you. (clears throat)
GRENEK: Quiet! Chief’s speaking!
(PIZAZZ grumbles.)
ULTHUN (to ZUSGUT): Please, my lord, we beseech you and ask the help of your mighty tribe. We are but mere humans and lack the cleverness and skill needed to escape the clutches of the undead. Will you aid us?
ZUSGUT: Of course, of course! Crookedtoes, my people, harken to me! Now is the time foretold, the time when the longshanks would come before us in desperate need.
GRENEK: We help too! We know how to fight undead longshanks!
SIATHORN: Yes, Mitzi will tear them apart with wolfish fierceness!
MITZI: Bark!
PIZAZZ: And I will compose a war song to lift our hearts.
(ALL except PIZAZZ groan.)
CRIMSI: No, no, no. We need my catapult!
ZUSGUT: I think we need to hurry; no time for catapults or songs. Prepare for the journey south and into our destiny! Now, WE be heroes!
ALL GOBLINS (cheering together): We be heroes! We be heroes! We be heroes!
Performance: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 Sure, hero point: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Zug Cowbell |
"Ooohhh! Goblin heroes play! Is very good!" Zug claps his hands, and jumping up and down. "Me in play also, very popular play! We was great, big applause. Me play Ulhun, the hooman." he continues, reminiscing his time in the stage. He rises on his toes, putting up his best human-act.
And he almost forget about making friends with Vionnia. Almost, but not quite. Luckily their guide is a cultured person, and clearly favors performing arts. Thus, he grabs his cowbell, and tells his bat, Gorgonzola, to get ready.
"Me has this little piece... Full cowbell version of famous 'Wraith of Opera' play. Goes like this:"
"One and two and four" the goblin whispers to the bat, and the two start playing perfect unison - Zug his cowbell and the bat using the goblins head as a xylophone.
Ding-ding ding ding di-ding ding di-ding... ding ding ding ding ding-ding-ding... it starts, soft and gentle. And soon moves into a more majestic CA-CHANG section.
Performance, virtuosic performer, accompanist: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 1 + 1 = 15 meh, hero point
Performance, virtuosic performer, accompanist: 1d20 + 11 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 1 + 1 = 25
"You like?"
GM Erich |
It takes some time to sus out, but Amanita finally realizes that even nobles can be kowtowed.
So, Intimidation is the final Influence skill, but be wary that it has the highest DC and the previous warning (from Mia) that "direct threats, physical or otherwise, will only make her confrontational..."
"Such a talented little troupe you are! Here I thought I was escorting the usual bruisers..." Vionnia interjects at the demonstrations of art.
Two more successes
Round 3! Everyone is up! All Influence skills have been identified (Underworld Lore, Oppara Lore, Performance , Diplomacy, Deception, and Intimidation). Also, if you don't want to roll directly on them (and risk critical failure), you can roll them as as aid (DC 15).
Clarence The Hunter |
Can Clarence not make a check? Only skill is intimidation
GM Erich |
He can, but there may be repercussions... yes, it is a bit of an odd set-up.
Inka Sator |
“That’s a lovely poem!” Inka smiles approvingly at Mia. “Your country of Iblydos sounds like a marvelous place. Such loyalty and duty. Do you know of any others?”
“I’ve been in places with considerably less patriotism,” she continues casually. “Some of them are even ruled by gangs, and sometimes you need to know the proper signs to just walk down the street safely.” She demonstrates by spreading out one hand perpendicular to her face, touching her thumb to her nose, and wiggling her fingers.
Underworld Lore: 1d20 ⇒ 3
It appears my lucky dice have cooled off ...
Clarence The Hunter |
Intimidate, Aid: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
I doubt anyone will be using Intimidate so I'll harmlessly aid...
Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
Is there a specific benefit to using every skill? I've got a decent intimidate, but since you said the DC is higher, idk if I wanna risk it.
GM Erich |
The skills are just choices, no benefits (other than a lower DC for some). But Intimidation has been singled out as maybe having a downside to use.
Mia Efimerida |
"Oh I forgot my music!" Mia says apologetically.
She casts a spell, and a faint sound surrounds her, waiting for something.
She starts her tale, and the music supports her, first quietly but picking up the pace as the story gets going:
"Between the years when the oceans drank Azlant,
and the rise of the sons of Aroden,
there was an age undreamed of,
when shining kingdoms laid spread across the world.
And into this world came beasts of frightening power,
cyclops, minotaurs, hydras, and many that have passed from memory,
and against them rose the first heroes.
Now, let me tell you of the days of high adventure..."
Mia goes on to tell a story about the first heroes of Iblydos.
Perform (Oratory): 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 = 18 +1 circumstance from Musical Accompaniment
Zug Cowbell |
It's not that Zug disapproves Mia's choice of music, but it really could use more cowbell. And so the goblin creates own background music for the story.
Perform, virtuosic performer: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 11 + 1 = 18
BTW, my previous roll was one too high. Virtuosic performer and accompanist are both circumstance bonuses. Sorry about that
GM Erich |
Vionnia continues to be impressed with the illustrious wordplay (and the steady knock of the cowbell). Two more successes
Round 3! Only Amanita remains.
GM Erich |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Roll the last influence check when you can, Amanita. We can keep things moving for now.
Crownsgate is in somewhat better repair than the Narrows, and the buildings have sturdier bones—though most have been picked clean. The one thing the districts have in common is that the law seems equally disinterested in both.
This district is filled with old industrial buildings and warehouses, and whatever wealth it might have had has long since been pilfered by the rest of the city, right down to the cobblestones. Cutthroats and criminal gangs hold sway over the shadowy alleys, with the occasional desperate beggar trying to eke out a living.
With the afternoon quickly approaching, the parting clouds let in some welcome, sunny warmth after the cold and muddy slums an hour or so previous. As you near the site of your next battle, a lone beggar stumbles in front of your group and falls to a practiced knee.
"Spare a few copper pieces for a lost soul?" He mutters, trailing off in shame.
Ulvard |
Ulvard, knowing that generosity is the "vice of the civilised man", listens to the beggar, takes out a copper and presents it to the man.
"Ulvard has heard you and bestows generosity upon you."
GM Erich |
Vionnia eyes the humble barbarian with a hint of a smile.
Ulvard gets a +1 circumstance bonus on his next check to impress Vionnia (after the next battle).
------------------------
The roof of this crumbling bridge lets shafts of light from the afternoon sun pierce its dusty interior. The rundown houses lining the bridge have been boarded up, and rubble and detritus lie scattered on the floor. A broken chain and rotted warning sign stick out of the debris near the entrance.
A lone figure stands, slightly hunched, at the other end of the bridge.
Vionnia instructs "For this fight, please keep the fighting to the general area of the bridge, and again, no looting of the opponents is allowed."
Place yourselves where you want to the right of the white line. You have one round to prepare. Let me know if you want to use something other than perception for initiative.
The roof of the bridge is 15 feet above the floor, all of which is considered difficult terrain due to substantial rubble.
Clarence The Hunter |
Clarence readies his shield and pulls out a javelin
Inka Sator |
“Six against one?!” Inka cautiously readies her bow while assessing their foe. “Will this be a fair fight?” She glances at one of the nearby buildings, trying to decide if she can take advantage of a higher vantage point to shoot over her allies.
Draw Gakgung. Hunt Prey vs enemy. Can Inka climb up (Athletics +7) to start on top of a building (e.g. see map)? Or are the buildings more than 15’ high, so that she wouldn’t be able to see into the bridge from there?
GM Erich |
"One should learn to enjoy the surprises life brings..." Vionnia smirks at the ranger as she readies her position at the far end of the alley.
@Inka Note there is a roof over the bridge that might block the view from nearby buildings. You are probably ok right were you are though - shooting straight down the middle.
Subject V115.04-A "Amanita" |
Amanita also joins in Mia's story, using their array of puppets to bring it even more to life.
Performance: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
------
Amanita and Barry move to flank the opening.
“Six against one?!” Inka cautiously readies her bow while assessing their foe. “Will this be a fair fight?” She glances at one of the nearby buildings, trying to decide if she can take advantage of a higher vantage point to shoot over her allies.
"Well, if this were a play, we'd likely all be thoroughly trounced as a way of showing how powerful he is, so... at the very least, I think we have reason to be concerned."
Mia Efimerida |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Mia looks around the maze of narrow alleys. "It is going to get tight, and although I consider myself more a swordswoman, I'll join Inka in the bow unit again", she decides and also climbs up to the roof.
"A moment to prepare? Even more concerning... but maybe I should give it all even though I might run out of magic before the final." She takes her bow in her hand, casts a spell on it, and starts describing the situation, with quite a different tone, as the excitement of combat hasn't taken over her yet: "On this end of the field, the away team starts preparing for the match. With the support of ladies on the roof, Clarence in the middle is ready for the start. For the home team, the tactics are not as clear as only one member has entered the field thus far..."
If these are allowed:
◆◆ Runic weapon on Composite Longbow
◆ Courageous Anthem with oratory -Sorry Zug
I guess Mia has refocused as the time between was mostly poems and stories?
Ulvard |
Ulvard readies his greatsword, and spends a moment trying to note if any of the bridge floor seems to be especially rotten... to the extent he is likely to fall through it.
per: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Zug Cowbell |
"Ulvard big man with big sword. Big sword needs hit bigger." Zug says, and reaches out to touch Ulvard's sword. The goblin draws magical runes onto the blade with his finger, making the whole weapon glimmer in magic.
Cast Runic weapon on Ulvard's greatsword. +1 item bonus to attack rolls and increasing the number of weapon damage dice to two
Ulvard |
Ulvard's eyes glow with delight as he swings his swords faster and harder through the air, noticing the sound it makes as if cutting the wind itself in two.
GM Erich |
Amanita's Influence is also a success!
-------------------
A couple of you climb to the closest rooftop. 10 foot high if it ever matters.
Vionnia asks if you are ready and waves at the figure on the other entrance of the bridge, who raises his hand feebly to signal back. Your guide then whistles to signal the beginning of the fight.
Ulvard Init: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Inka Sator |
At the whistle, Inka immediately springs into action, firing arrow after arrow after arrow after arrow in blindingly rapid succession from the top of her building. Thanks to her short stature, there is no need to stoop to fire below the roof of the bridge.
Hunted Shot attacks: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 1 = 91d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 1 = 21

Attack & Damage (P): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 191d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4
◆Hunted Shot, ◆Strike x2 w/Courageous Anthem in effect
Ulvard |
Ulvard, suspecting a trap, readies an action to strike the first opponent to comes within range.
"Ulvard is suspicious..." he states.
In the meanwhile he continues to eye up the bridge for spots likely to not support his weight.
per: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
GM Erich |
Ulvard hangs back, awaiting trouble, but sees nothing wrong just yet.
@Ulvard, for reasons, I'd like to keep the seek action rolls secret if you want to take them.
Inka does not hang back, and her volley of arrows sail down the bridge, two striking the old man in the chest.
