@DS: Not sure on the various paths. I can have a stab but would be good to get a wee insight before committing?

Scoundrel Path - sounds interesting, perhaps his wanderlust has gone sour and he's found himself on the wrong side of the tracks... A Fagan type per'haps?
Seafarer Path - makes sense if he yearns to see the world?
Warrior Path - most likely nay

Male Human

Oh, maybe we don’t pick class yet…and I haven’t chosen my +1 to Str or Dex yet as I’m unsure if we will get more bonuses.

Male Hairy Highlander Halfbreed (ThirdSwede) Barbarian 9/King O' The North 5/Staffy Dad 7

@Daniel: As noted above could we get a peek behind the curtain on stuff like Paths etc.

Am also curious if say my character is POOR, is there a level below that or is he at the gutter of society - just helps with the mental shaping of all these events as we go :)

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

Sure can answer some questions!!

There are two levels below poor, they are squalid and wretched!

Most of your background time is spent serving in one or more vocations. A vocation is a job or activity in which you spend most of each day performing. Similar vocations are grouped into paths, which share a significant common element in some way. There are several different types of paths you may choose to spend your background time in.

Collegiate Path. You may decide to attend an institution of higher learning. This path is optional and comes with special entrance requirements, costs, and rewards. This path can only be selected during your 1st season.

Vocational Paths. These paths form the largest type and span a wide variety of activities. This group contains two different subtypes: open paths and qualified paths. The difference between them is the entrance requirements.

To join a vocation from a qualified path, you must pass a test — otherwise, you won’t get the job! Vocations in open paths do not require a test to enter and may be taken by anyone at any time. If you fail the test to join a qualified path, you must choose a vocation from one of the open paths.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

Collegiate Path has 4 possible Institutes - Academic University, Arcane Lyceum, Divine Seminary, and Martial Academy.

With a Vacation, you can either take the skilled (Qualified) path or the unskilled (Free) path.

Below is a partial flowchart for this next section. It is why I wanted you all to update your characters because you can gain skills, proficiencies, and even points to attributes

STAGE 4: PATHS — PAGE 16

Step 1: If this is your 1st season, you can choose to try for the Collegiate path. Move to COLLEGIATE PATH PHASE I: COLLEGE ENTRANCE, of the Collegiate Path Phases (page 18).

Step 2: Otherwise, advance to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE I: CHOOSING A VOCATION, of the Vocational Path Phases (page 23).
Note: If you end up in the Prisoner path, instead of the steps above, jump to PRISONER PATH PHASE I: CHOOSING A VOCATION of the Prisoner Path Phases (page 58).

STAGE 5: CLASS TRAINING — PAGE 63

Begin with CLASS TRAINING PHASE I: CHOOSING AN ADVENTURING CLASS, of the Class Training Phases (page 64).

STAGE 6: WEAVING RELATIONSHIPS — PAGE 66
Select one or two other party members. Roll 1d10 on the Past Relationship Events table for each party member.

YOUR BACKGROUND IS COMPLETE!
It’s time to enjoy playing your new character!

Male Human

Just waiting on the result of my YOUTH and ADOLESCENCE: Life Event: Ally…

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

Ally. An ally is a close friend or could be a romantic partner. They may have a special or unique position or have some valuable knowledge. An ally will always help you if they are able and will take risks to do so.

Male Human

Ah. So a plot device. That is either completely underwhelming, or totally game changing. ;)

So Daniel - can my budding Magic User try for entrance to a Collegiate Path or is that closed to him? Not sure if I can only go Scoundrel/Seafarer or Warrior or if they are just the ones I get a bonus on?

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Historian/Curator

OK, so I will start with you, Black Dow.

First, have to decide which colligate path you wish to follow. I assume it is the Arcane Lyceum, as this is the normal path for wizards. Next, you need to be able to pay for the schooling...and lucky you, you have a Patron. This allows you to "ask" your Patron to fund your schooling. You will "owe" your Patron and adds a great hook for later adventures!

PATRON TUITION TESTS:
Arcane Lyceum: Intelligence check vs DC 16 - Your 14 INT gives you a +2 to this roll.

If successful, you have someone willing to pay your way through school otherwise you will need to go into debt to pay for the schooling.

ENTRANCE TEST:
Intelligence check vs DC 12 - Your 14 INT gives you a +2 to this roll.

If you succeed, congratulations! Your 1st season will be spent in the halls of education. Continue to COLLEGIATE PATH PHASE II: COLLEGE SEASON. If you fail, you cannot proceed further in the Collegiate path. Instead, you must skip to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE I: CHOOSING A VOCATION (p. 23) and select a vocation from an open path. That will be your 1st season.

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

my character would be also interested in college if possible. Perhaps I'll go Divine instead of Arcane.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

ok Scranford. You will follow the same basics as above but your numbers might be a little different for Divine.

PATRON TUITION TESTS:
Divine Semenary: Wisdom check vs DC 14 - Your 12 INT gives you a +1 to this roll.

If successful, you have someone willing to pay your way through school otherwise you will need to go into debt to pay for the schooling.

ENTRANCE TEST:
Wisdom check vs DC 10 - Your 12 WIS gives you a +1 to this roll.

Male Human

I’m guessing I’ll try to gain entrance to the Martial Academy.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE I: CHOOSING A VOCATION
At the start of each season, you must choose a path and vocation in which to spend the season.

Step 1: Select a path and vocation. Choose one:
 If the vocation is from a qualified path, you must qualify to continue. Move to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE II: QUALIFICATION.
 If the vocation is from an open path, you do not need to qualify. Skip to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE III: VOCATION SEASON.
Important! If you are returning to this phase after having completed at least one season in another vocation (not including the Collegiate path), you must pass the qualification test for the new vocation, if any exists. Should you leave a vocation and switch to a new one (whether by choice, or because an event forced you to switch vocations), you must pass the qualification test again if you try to return to the vocation you held previously.

VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE II: QUALIFICATION
Step 1: To enter this vocation, you must successfully pass a qualification test.
 If you succeed, proceed to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE III: VOCATION SEASON.
 If you fail, you cannot enter the vocation selected. You must return to VOCATIONAL PATH PHASE I: CHOOSING A VOCATION and choose a vocation from an open path.

Male Human

Ok. So entry into Martial Academy is “open/free”? Regardless, I’m not really interested in a Martial Academy. Bounty Hunter!

Vocation Path, Law Enforcer: Bounty Hunter DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 WIS Check

Oh well. I guess my SAT's weren't high enough. I'll consider the Acolyte vocation.

Hmmmm, I think I would like to try and go for a Martial Academy. How does it work?

Male Hairy Highlander Halfbreed (ThirdSwede) Barbarian 9/King O' The North 5/Staffy Dad 7

PATRON TUITION TESTS: Arcane Lyceum: Intelligence check vs DC 16: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

So epic fail. Will likely go with Scoundrel vocation path... gain a +1 due to Social Class

DEX - Scoundrel / Charlatan, Criminal, Pirate, Smuggler (DC 6): 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 = 8 Whew!

Likely go Charlatan (hey if I can't be a wizard I can pretend to be one...) or Smuggler (see the world, bring contraband over its borders :)

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Acolyte school

Okay. so I guess it looks like a commoner...

No worries Daniel, take all the time you need. Hope you’re feeling better!

Those are usually nasty - hope you feel better soon.

Male Hairy Highlander Halfbreed (ThirdSwede) Barbarian 9/King O' The North 5/Staffy Dad 7

Nae bother brother - take your time and echoing the gang on your recovery.

Male Human

I’m away from home for the next 4 days - I’ll still be able to check in an post, just a little less frequently (or voluminously) and access to maps might be…strained…though I imagine we won’t be up to battlemaps here (if you’re planning on using them) for a while.

Liberty's Edge

OK, sorry for the delay... I finally seem to have kicked off the stomach bug that has been plaguing me...lol

OCEANSHIELDWOLF: You can try any of the ACADEMIC paths if you want, as long as you pass the entry roll, but let's get on to your Bounty Hunter path!!

You made your Qualification roll so your next step is for you to select a proficiency from your vocation's Improvement table (see below).

Deception
Gaming Set (any 1)
Insight
Persuasion
Stealth
Thieves' Tools

Roll 1d6 + your current season count on the Self-Improvement table.

After this, you roll for Misadventure. If you succeed, you have escaped danger. Nothing else happens in this step. Your DC for this roll is 10 against your WISDOM.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

SCRANFORD: OK as a commoner you can choose from Vagrant, Vagabond or Citizen.

Once you decide you can choose a proficiency from your vocation's Improvement table.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

ALBION: To gain access to an ACADEMIC PATH you need to secure a source of money to pay the tuition as well as rolling to pass an entry test.

You can either try to have a PATRON support you while you go to school, or attempt to get the tuition prepaid by family or a family friend. Finally, you can take a debt for the amount needed and pay it back after the game starts.

Prepaid: Martial Academy - Constitution + (Social Rank Modifier × 5) check vs DC 24

Patron: Martial Academy - Constitution check vs DC 14

Entry Test: Strength or Dexterity check vs DC 10. If your Social Rank is 3+, gain +1 bonus.

Liberty's Edge

Male Historian/Curator

BLACK DOW: OK, so you need to decide which Vocation you want to follow. Once decided you will be able to choose an Improvment.

Down the Line
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 2) - 2 = 13
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 1) - 1 = 15
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 3) - 1 = 13
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 2) - 2 = 10
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 6) - 3 = 16
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 3) - 2 = 11

Male Dwarf

Social Rank: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 5) = 12

Modest Social Rank 3 Modifier 0

Place of Origin: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Urban

Childhood Environment: 1d100 ⇒ 16

Close Relative

Missing Parent: 1d100 ⇒ 5

Dead and Unknown

Childhood Relationships: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Childhood Relationship 1: 1d20 ⇒ 6 Ally

Childhood Relationship 2: 1d20 ⇒ 17 Rival

Male Human

@Daniel: How many times will I get to choose from that list? Given my super low Charisma, I’m thinking Deception and Persuasion would be a bad idea. I’m also thinking Thieves Tools might be best left to an Expert (class) so…Stealth, Insight or Gaming Set I guess, just trying to get a handle on how many bites I get at the Bounty Hunter cherry…

Self Improvement: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 I’m guessing this is Season 1?

Misadventure, Wisdom DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Youth and Adolescence

Self-Improvement Urban: 1d6 ⇒ 6 +1 Wisdom

Event: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 Mystery

Wisdom (DC 10): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 Solved

Starting Age: 3d10 + 35 ⇒ (8, 5, 2) + 35 = 50

Paths

Collegiate Path: Military Academy

Patron Tuition Test (Con DC 14): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Fail

Entrance Test (Dex DC 10): 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 1 = 16 Success (Now to incur soul crushing debt 450gp/year)

Attendance Improvement: Athletics

Self-Improvement: +1 Strength

College Event: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9 Cheating scandal, I snitch, Gain an Enemy

Spend 4 years in college incur 1800gp debt (if a dragon eats me they can't collect...)

Graduation Test (Con DC 12/16): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Graduate with Honors: Expertise in Athletics

Age: 54

Increase Social Rank: 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Social Rank 6

So since we are using OSR rules and those use backgrounds in place of skills, is there something we are going to do to replace the skill options? I don't think I saw this addressed in previous posts, if I missed it my bad.
