Player: Chris N. aka kaervek78
Character: Kurik
Pathfinder Society Number: 331079-3
Character class and level: Paladin 3
Faction: Silver Crusade
Day job: None
Regular or slow: regular
This Chronicle #: 9
Kurik is a STR-frontliner with a greatsword, Power Attack and Furious Focus. If ranged attacks are necessary, he uses his sling. His best skills are Diplomacy(+10) and Intimidate(+10) - he uses the latter regularly to demoralize enemy combatants. He has some experience in Animal Handling(+7) and is not too bad in Bluff(+3) and Disguise(+3), despite not being trained - though he will not tell lies. He surely isn't very perceptive(-2), and Knowledge isn't his domain, either.
Kurik has some energy resistances (Fire 3, Cold 3, Acid 3) and also has the Omen trait: Once per day, you may attempt to demoralize an opponent as a swift action.

@GM Redelia: what is the expected posting frequency at this table?

![]() |

No need to apologize - I just wanted to know your expectations. ;-)
I hope you got the power back now.

![]() |

Do not worry, Redelia, we are not in a hurry.
Real life always comes first, especially when it's a matter of health.
Take good care of yourself!

It has been 6 days. In order to be able to move forward soon, shall we bot Sssala?

![]() |

I'm sorry, I really hope Kurik does not take all the fun out of the current situation. I mean, how often in PFS has a party the possibility to prepare and execute an ambush? However, a paladin has a code of conduct that he better follows - or else...
I'm trying to not pull a Miko Miyazaki - the worst example of a self-righteous paladin - here, but I do not see a way to participate in an ambush and keep my paladin powers...
PS: Suggestions welcome!

GM Redelia |

Kurik, there is no reason a paladin cannot participate in an ambush. The paladin cannot lie, but no one is needing to lie for the sort of ambush being set up, not even a lie by omission or allowing someone else to lie, both of which at least in society paladins are expected to be able to do. It is possible that there is a reason your particular paladin cannot, such as if your deity has a more specific code.

![]() |

All I want is to not become a fallen paladin.
I already witnessed a fall in a PFS game, so I thoroughly read the code of conduct (see below) and thought that the bolded part means a paladin cannot participate in an ambush.
Or are there PFS specific changes to the paladin I am not aware of?
A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class features except proficiencies if she ever willingly commits an evil act.
Additionally, a paladin's code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.
Anyhow, I am happy to take part in the ambush if that doesn't trigger falling!

PS: Here is the description of Ex-Paladins.
A paladin who ceases to be lawful good, who willfully commits an evil act, or who violates the code of conduct loses all paladin spells and class features (including the service of the paladin's mount, but not weapon, armor, and shield proficiencies). She may not progress any further in levels as a paladin. She regains her abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her violations (see the atonement spell description in Spell Lists), as appropriate.

Just my 2 cents but I think it would depend upon whom you’re ambushing…undead, demons, obviously evil creatures should be fine…an ambush where you’re not sure whom you might be ambushing might be a different story…

![]() |

Yeah, that's why I suggested Kurik stays in the open and detects evil while you guys hide and ambush them if they are evil. Seemed like a doable option...

![]() |

Kazumi is better anyway.
I think calling an ambush a lie is really stretching things. We're granting ourselves a tactical advantage. Would you say it's unfair to smite evil against something that can't smite good?
If an ambush is what caused the paladin in the other game to lose their powers, I would have serious questions for the GM.

![]() |

I did not think an ambush is lying. The question is: is it honorable?
But as I said: I am happy to take part in the ambush if that doesn't make me fall!

GM Redelia |

Is it possible some GMs in non-society games might think an ambush is not honorable? Maybe, but any reasonable GM would at least warn you first.
Can a society GM make your paladin fall for an ambush? I don't think so, and they definitely have to warn you first.
In conclusion, you're fine. I would suggest rather than retconning what you've already said, since the roleplay is so good, letting your teammates convince you. :)

GM Redelia |

To be a little more verbose, society GMs have to be a little permissive for paladins to make things work. There are scenarios where if the GM was strict, a paladin cannot participate in the mission. In order to keep paladin a playable class, society GMs have to let paladins do things like watch their teammates lie and let paladins cooperate with evil NPCs because the society says to.
I also tend to believe that paladins of NG deities have a little extra wiggle room compared to paladins of LG deities.

Thanks for the info and the further explanation regarding Society play! That makes totally sense.
I just did not want to do something that makes Kurik fall, that's all.
So, I am ready to be convinced by my teammates. ;-)

"These look quite slippery. And with my heavy armor I'm not very good with slippery. I'll go first so I don't hurt anyone else if I fall, but... shouldn't we investigate the room where the plant came from before we go down?"
I wouldn't want to have unexplored rooms behind us before we go down to another level...
Oops, I didn’t catch that we missed a room; we can explore it first…
As for when we go down the stairs, let Beleg go first…he has a good Acrobatics mod and can perhaps catch someone if they fall…or perhaps lessen their fall…looks like it may be a long way down and could be lethal for some of us at our current level…
