Watching as Mukluk settles in comfortably at Koya's he shakes his head 'no.' "Storm and I headed north out of the Sanos heading north, met Shalelu just the otherside of Turtleback Ferry. She was with the Rangers then, when she decided to come home I came with her." He shrugs "First time I'd been out of the Sanos Forest.'

As the conversation wained, Rory was considering how he'd spend the money he'd been allocated. About then Kisaiya asked Mukluk about borrowing some money. He considered voluteering to loan her some, but it seemed like Mukluk had it well in hand. As they chatted about the trip Rory frowned, maybe he should have loaned her the morning, he'd have picked something insead of vegtible soup to eat everyday.

As they sipped their tea, he considered what potions they may need for the road...

”Bless you my son.” so says Father Zantus, a friendly sort of town priest. He has seen his town suffer much over the last years, but has stood like a rock upon which the town can rest. He gratefully takes in the tithe, and promises to devote it to Abadarian pursuits. ”Perhaps, as I am somewhat unfamiliar with the process of lending, we could spend some time on your return to establish something more formal? Though I favor Desna myself, Abadar has a lot of respect from this town, and I with them.”

To Koya Mvashti, he is courteous and polite. He seems somewhat disconcerted by her offer of making potions at cost, but recovers quickly. "Thank you for your hospitality and for your generous offer. Though the Master of the Vault and the Song of the Spheres differ greatly, they are both patrons of travelers. Indeed, I myself have taken this oath, common among his paladins: 'I am a protector of the roadways and keep travelers from harm. No matter their destinations or goals, if they are peaceable and legitimate travelers who harm no others on the road, I will ensure that they pass safely.’ I pray that I can keep this caravan safe.

Should I ask you to brew anything for me in the future, it may be another cup of this excellent tea. I thank you again.”

”Ahh yes. You are more formal and I more free.” she laughs lightly, but more at herself. ”I shall endeavor not to step on your toes good sir! There are plenty to minister to a caravan, even one so small as this! Just three wagons, and one of them mine. Gracious!”

She passes the plate of biscuits around again.

Sandru finds you shortly thereafter and has questions, ”Ameiko mentioned some seed money - a partial payment in caravan supplies, and maybe more, but she said you lot were handling it. Let’s talk a bit about needs so we can get things going, shall we?”

I’m fine with the recommended purchases on the treasure sheet, but if you could elucidate them in character to Sandru that would be great. A chance for the party to discuss any changes as well.

Also, as far as roles go, Trader is in addition to a regular caravan role. Ideally you'll have five Traders to cover each town so you don't have to spend much time there. Just fan out and sell. We currently have two, though Ameiko is willing to help out a bit as well. So three.

Kisaiya pulls out papers with which she has been doing various accounting. ”Okay, so I was thinking we upgrade the undercarriages on each of the wagons. It’s three quarters of the money, but I think it’s worth it. The extra speed will save us time and saving time saves us…well everything else.” She then points to a line item. ”Cold weather gear for the wagons is really more a precaution than anything, but I’ve been on a caravan when unexpected cold hits and it will pay for itself quickly.” She points at a few more lines. ”And then some trade goods, some materials in case we need to repair anything, and of course foodstuffs. I want to keep the menu versatile, so there’s going to be a good mixture of ingredients. I know how best to efficiently keep the food from running a kitchen and working on a caravan, so we should have tons of room. The extra supplies are for long-term backup supplies and will just need to be kept dry. I’m thinking some hardtack, pemmican, and coffee in reserve. I know nobody really wants hardtack or pemmican, but we can make Rubaboo and Hellfire Stew with them and some of the other excess ingredients.” She flips through the papers as she tries to remember if she has hit everything. ”Oh! And we should probably hire on a wainwright to keep around on reserve. I don’t think any of us actually know how to fix a caravan. Any recommendations you have would be welcome, as the only one I know is up in Kalsgard, so no help to us now. Too bad, as Gertrude could fix anything.” She then facepalms. ”Of course, and the rest of us. We can all do some trading in town but along the way, Mukluk can be our guide, Rory help out with scouting, Durgan staying on as the healer, Ameiko entertaining us with her music, and me as the cook, naturally.” She takes a deep breath, having rushed to get all of that explanation out.

Mukluk nods along as if he understands half of what Kisaiya has clearly put a lot of thought into. He grunts and offers encouragement this idea or that, but is mostly truly lost by the time all the recommendations are offered and explained.

The things he cared most about (food) seemed to be covered, and if that was ever an issue, he had his own stores of stew ingredients as well.

Ah, didn't realize there were no Abadaran clergy in town.

Durgan thinks a moment.
"If there is no Church of Abadar to make loans, then I propose this: use this gold to improve roads, bridges, wells, fortifications, docks, drainage ditches, or other civic infrastructure here in Sandpoint. Allow the Mayor to decide on the investments, with reference to the copy of the Manual of City-Building that is kept at the Shrine of Abadar. That sum of gold should pay for a skilled architect or engineer, a skilled craftsman, and a team of ten laborers, for at least a month. Please keep records of who is hired, what they are paid, and what they accomplish."

That will be Durgan's normal course of action on loot distribution; tithe 10% either to a Church of Abadar, or failing that for local improvements in civic infrastructure, or failing that to the Caravan.

Kisaiya Shiraishi wrote:
"Oh! And we should probably hire on a wainwright to keep around on reserve. I don’t think any of us actually know how to fix a caravan."

Durgan nods. "I can attempt field repairs, but I have little experience there. I would not place myself in that role."

With Breadth of Experience he can make Profession checks untrained, such as Profession (engineer or wainwright), but he does not actually have a rank in either skill. If the AP calls for a check at a specific time, he can attempt it, but he cannot provide the ongoing benefit of a wainwright.

Sipping his tea, Rory nods as Koya explains she'd be bringing her tea pot in her own house-wagon. Smiling at Durgan, also comments about the tea. Listening as the older woman spoke, Rory realizes she was right, quickly deducing the dwarf's nature. As the others were getting up to leave, Rory slides into Storms saddle, turning to their host. "Storm and I are more free too, I'll take you up on your offer, let me think about it. In the meantime if you need any leather work done for harnesses and such just let me know."

Pondering the things he should purchase 'for the road' Rory stayed with the others as she discussed what needs they had. As she talked, he realized he'd probably need to pick up some cold weather gear, maybe a coat and a tent or extra blanket. When the conversation turned to needing a Wainright, he chimed in, "I don't know anything about wagons, but I can make and repair harnesses."

As Mukluk excused himself to speak to his ass mule, Rory wanted to take care of something as well. Nodding to the Durgan and Kisaiya, "I'll catch you two later as well." Heading to the church, he finds Father Zantus asking, "Pardon me Father, would you be able to prepare a couple of spells to improve the quality of a couple weapons and a piece of armor?"

Yeah, there’s a shrine in the cathedral, but no independent priest. You could fund one, maybe bringing in some talent from Magnimar.

Father Zantus listens carefully to Durgan. After a moment, he takes out a scrap of paper and makes some notes with a stubby pencil. ”I’ll do the best I can. Maybe the southern bridge. It was near burnt in a goblin raid some time ago and could use some work. How does that sound?”

Rory Cornelius wrote:

Happy to be on firmer footing, he readily agrees, ”Sure thing Rory, just let me know what you need and I’ll prepare it for you - usual rates of course.” Getting some masterwork transformations?

The next day, Gozran 5, a Wealday, while making your purchases and other preparations, you stop in to see the caravan being fitted out with the new undercarriage you recommended, and being loaded up. You meet the two drivers, Bevelek and Vankor. Nice enough men, if a little quiet. They’ve worked for Sandru for years, and have learned to be quiet in the face of his outgoing boisterousness. They have an eye for their work and they watch the preparations, help load, and generally check the wagons for road readiness.

You mention the need for a wainwright, and Sandru readily agrees. ”I think I know someone we can hire, leave it to me.” he says. By the end of the day a wiry youth with rough calloused hands provides a list of needs to Kisaiya. It’s a good list. (basically the supplies you’ve already purchased) His name is Taaniel.

Near the end of the day, Shalelu Andosana (image) returns to Sandpoint from some foray or other, and joins the group at the caravan. She greets Rory warmly, and may know one or two of you as well. ”Good job on the Brinestump Marsh goblins. I understand after you killed them, you burned their village to the ground.” She nods seriously, ”Well done.”

She seems impressed by that and your measure in her eyes increases slightly. As you might expect coming from such a well renown archer - and hater of goblins.

Finally, the following day (Gozran 6), the wagons are re-configured, loaded, and ready to go! It’s early afternoon before everything is in place. Ameiko suggests leaving the following morning, but Koya pushes for an immediate departure. ”We can camp at Thistle River if we get lucky with these new fangled wheels.” she points out. ”A lovely spot for a first night celebration!”

Do you leave now and push it, or depart in the morning?

Mukluk is careful to cleverly balance the load on Moose's saddlebags, his own provisions and Mukluk's gear providing most of the weight. He and Moose had been traveling partners for a while now, and so they tend to get along just fine once things were set just right.

This time it was different, however, as they were part of a much larger group, and many other horse (and mule?) friends around and, more importantly, Moose wouldn't be setting the walking and sleeping schedule. Sure, it was Mukluk who did all the food preparation and clean up, all the laundry and talking, but it was Moose who decided when it was time to slow down. Each had their thing, and that's how it works.

"Now Moose, do you think you want to press on to the Thistle River today? You remember how much you like thistles, right? Or...did you want to take it easy as we get to know your new horse friends? There is no harm either way, but we gotta work as a team with rest," Mukluk asks Moose, wondering what it would be.

1d2 ⇒ 2

Mukluk counts the number of ear twitches.

"One...TWO! HAW! HAW! HAW! That's two twitches! We press on. That's what we'll do! We'll press on to Thistle River. That's a good way to do that."

And, as guide, Mukluk will lead the caravan right on then.

”Alright. I just…need to go get something. I can’t leave without it. I will be fast, I promise.”

Kisaiya rushes back home as quickly as she can. Her father will still be at the Glassworks until the evening, so nobody is there, just as she hoped.

She goes and stands in front of her Grandmother’s armor, staring at the ho-ate mask, a fearsome demonic grin with bared fangs. Once it had scared her, but she felt little fear anymore, and certainly not of something so closely connected to her family. ”Grandmother Reiko, I swear that I will not do anything dishonor to you or our family while I wear this armor.” She wraps and packs away each piece of armor with care and precision. Finally, she sets a bag containing almost every piece of gold she owns and all she has borrowed on the stand, along with a letter.

The Letter:

Dad,
I am glad that I came back to Sandpoint. I never appreciated you as a son, but I am glad that I was able to come to an understanding with you as a daughter. I am especially glad that you reached out to me first, as I know how difficult that is for you. I think me coming back was what we both needed at the time.

An opportunity has come up. We found more treasures including a letter to Ameiko’s family, a letter that speaks of treasures and secrets in Brinewall. Ameiko wants to go, and she asked all of us to go with her.

I find myself in a conundrum, being both sworn to honor my parents and to other obligations that insist I should go with Ameiko. To resolve this, I am leaving you all the money I have: 1700 gold pieces, the value as best I can determine of a single suit of ō-yoroi armor. I know you, ever the Abadaran, dislike receiving charity, even from family members, so consider it a payment for Grandmother’s armor if you wish.

I don’t know what we will find there in Brinewall, but I suspect it will be something dangerous, and I cannot guarantee I will be coming back. Even if nothing bad happens, if Ameiko wants to keep going, I get the feeling she will want to, the way she talked about wanting and adventure and how serious the preparations have been. If so, I will be with her. Grandmother served Ameiko’s family back in the old country, and I can think of no greater way to honor her memory than to do the same when called upon.

This is not like before. This is not youthful impulse borne out of high emotions, but the desire and obligations of a mature grown woman. Still, I know you would object, so I am leaving you with a letter rather than an argument. I do not want to leave with bad blood between us. I do not think I could bear it again.

And, well, if this ends up a short trip, then you can box me on the ears when I get back.

Your faithful daughter,
Kisaiya

She takes one last look at her childhood home at the doorway. She bows. ”Thank you.” She is not sure who she says it to, maybe the mother she lost who was so closely tied to this house, maybe to her father who is not here to see her off, maybe to the house itself for being her home. She closes the door and turns away, rushing back towards the caravan.

yep :) Is there a fee for the three spells or is it just the cost of the MW? If so I may need to alter my purchases depending on the amount. if were doing the traditional math Caster level × spell level × 10 gp I'll need to adjust some :)

Spending the night quietly camped near the church, Rory headed there to speak with Father Zantus first thing in the morning. Leaving his Buckler, saw-back gladius and Storms chain shirt in a pile, he asks the Father, "If you could make these three items masterwork that would be awesome." He smiles, "I've got the gold to do it."

Having left his items with Father Zantus, he heads to Koya's house. Knocking on the door, he smiles at the older woman at she opens the door, Asking, "Miss Koya, if you could make a potion of lesser restoration and four postions of curing light wounds, that would be wonderful."

Intent on meeting the others at the wagons, Rory stops at Vinder's General Store and purchase winter clothing, a tent and extra blankets, just in case he ends up sleeping out in the weather. Packing up his new gear he heads to the wagons, hoping for a place to store his gear.

As the day winds down and he picks up his items from Father Zantus and Miss Koya, he returns to the wagons. Tickled to find his friend Shalelu there he waves and smiles as she congratulates them 'on a job well done.' He pauses for a moment, realizing his friend doesn't know that the fire was an accident. He hated to think it was a happy accident and decided that he would tell her they didn't burn down the village on purpose. Seeing how serious she is, he decides to wait and tell her some other time.

When the conversation turns to leaving, Rory watches as Mukluk carries on his conversation with the near-legendary Moose. Watching the mule twitch his ears, Rory looks towards Storm, who's ears are always twitching. Not knowing how often mules actually twitch their ears, Rory still isn't sure how trustworthy the mule is. But he is sure how trustworthy Mukluk is, so if Mukluk wants to leave that night it was fine with him. Chiming in, "I think Miss Koya and Moose are right, let's leave tonight."

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Father Zantus may not be Abadarian, but his churchly income sees to it that the poor of Sandpoint don’t suffer overmuch. So he does charge for spell casting… for the most part. He’ll certainly charge someone whose purse is as fat as yours. :)

There are two horse drawn wagons (covered and Koya’s) and one mule drawn (supply), so Mukluk has friends if he wants ‘em.

You depart and travel the Lost Coast Road leaving Sandpoint heading north! The drivers are easy on their steeds at the start - not quite trusting the new undercarriages. Sandru though takes the lead wagon and slowly increases the pace. The others have no recourse but to keep up - so they do and you make very good time indeed!

It’s nearly evening when Koya says, ”Isn’t it just marvelous?” from her usual spot on the front seat of the middle wagon in the caravan.

You come to a bend in the road, a little above the Thistle River, and it is indeed a lovely sight. The road follows the river a bit before eventually coming to a fordable crossing. Before it does, you come upon a most delightful camping spot - used by Varisians up and down the coast - likely for generations.

It looks east over the river, so you get the delightfully warm sun on your shoulders as you gaze into the slow moving watercourse just past the fire which Shalelu organizes. A pair of otters swim some distance downstream, or maybe beavers - you can’t see them. Either way, their playful splashing makes for a good bit of merriment as the camp is prepared.

Ameiko begins singing early in the process and before much time has passed the camp is well established and the fun has begun! Food and drink are broken out and the party ensues (image). Varisians are known for their evening festivities after long days, and the ‘first night’ celebrations of any new caravan run are generally memorable occasions.

Spurred dually by Koya and Ameiko, the party goes long. The crackling campfire throws sparks into the sky until even the moon itself has settled in for the night.

Oh yeah, for sure. And so will Moose. Though Mukluk will only befriend if Moose isn't going to get jealous, and there is no telling with that ass.

Mukluk and Moose stay near the mule wagon, with Moose's new mule friends. And though he is not hired as a Driver, nor a mule tender, Mukluk does spend a bit of time making sure all the horses and mules are well tended before joining the party.

A confirmed introvert, Mukluk is not exactly comfortable at the 'party', especially if Moose was hanging with his mule friends and he would need to meet and speak with new people in a social environment, aka, an utter horror and huge energy drain.

He does find time to take a seat next to Kisaiya (assuming she's not dancing up a storm or hobnobbing all about) and tries to find a Moose-like party friend to latch onto as he adjusts to the many new peoples in the caravan.

"Do you party like this much?" Mukluk asks.

Durgan, for his part, mostly enjoys the first day of the trip.

Nobody is seriously injured so his task as Healer is uneventful - perhaps there is a mild sprain or blister to attend to. Nor is the caravan in a village where his Trader skills are necessary.

He takes note of the quality of the road and of what sort of investment might be needed for a bridge over the Thistle River.

At camp, he is happy to use his spells to refill water supplies and ensure that foraged food is edible.

He turns in early, waking for the late watch shift.

Spending most of the day either riding point with Shalelu or off hunting in the woods and then catching up with the wagons, Rory enjoys the time with Storm back on the road again. Once they settle down at the bend in the road a little above the Thistle River, Rory unsaddles Storm and let's him wander off hunting as he helps prepair the pair of conneys for the pot. As the party ensues, Rory helps himself to the food and drink, but makes sure he doesn't take in too much of either knowing they would need to keep a watch. As the night winds down he pitches his bedroll under Miss Koya's wagon, where he can stay dry but still see what's going on. Checking in with the others, "Anyone mind If Storm and I take one of the middle watches?"

Eventually, morning comes (Gozran 7, Fireday), and with it a lazy sun rising over the slightly steamy river. You break camp, perhaps a little thickly, and head further north - leaving Sandpoint behind!

The day passes fitfully enough, until near dusk when the movement of some spooked deer raise the hackles of your scouts Shalelu and Rory. Sure enough - trouble!

A smattering of goblins charge out of the forest on either side of the road - but the fearsome trouble is the ogre, a scrawny ogre perhaps for working with goblins, but an ogre nonetheless! Pushed forward by some goblins, the ogre blocks your path and the horses in the front wagon rear up at his approach.

The drivers do their best to control their animals. Most of you are on wagons. Getting off to an adjacent square is a move action. Or you can jump (Acrobatics DC 10 or fall prone) for 5’ of movement.

Knowledge Local DC 13:
It’s an ogre all right. CE Large humanoid (giant).

Stories are told of ogres—horrendous stories of brutality and savagery, cannibalism and torture. Of rape and dismemberment, necrophilia, incest, mutilation, and all manners of hideous murder. Those who have not encountered ogres know the stories as warnings. Those who have survived such encounters know these tales to be tame compared to the truth.

An ogre revels in the misery of others. When smaller races aren’t available to crush between meaty fists or defile in blood-red lusts of violence, they turn to each other for entertainment. Nothing is taboo in ogre society. One would think that, left to themselves, an ogre tribe would quickly tear itself apart, with only the strongest surviving in the end—yet if there is one thing ogres respect, it is family.

Apparently, the dice agree that he really hates goblins.

Mukluk greases up the ogre, sending him sprawling. Kisaiya continues to struggle to land a blow on the scrappy goblins. Rory’s mighty steed goes down fighting (don’t forget to roll for stabilization at the start of each round), while Rory himself leaps off and stabs the beast! Durgan continues to show his hatred, to the joy of Shalelu, as he plasters the next goblin like chomping on pez from a pez dispenser. He then stands on their bleeding forms as he steps up. Ameiko begins to sing a delightful little ditty about slaughtering goblins (inspire courage, +1 att/dam) and moves against the ogre, also looking for the AoO. Mukluk pours a little life into Storm and prepares for battle. Kisaiya moves up and helps to protect Ameiko. Durgan protects the party and takes a swing for the team as he positions into flank. Rory delays, then cracks the ogre in the back of the knee - you know that soft spot that hurts oh so much! Storm, from the ground, gnaws on the ogre’s exposed toes, tearing off a nail. Ameiko continues to sing as she steps up and swings in flank with Durgan, but she misses. Shalelu moves up a bit and takes a shot at the ogre, seeing no further goblin threat, and misses.

AoO Ogre on Durgan: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (3, 5) + 7 = 15

The ogre looks at his club, sure he landed a blow on the hard dwarf. But it is not to be.

Ameiko on Ogre: 1d20 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 3 = 9 damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 = 5
Shalelu on Ogre: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 11 - 2 = 14 damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8

The ogre cries out in pain, and lashes out at Rory for his hit.
Ogre on Rory: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (4, 8) + 7 = 19

Rory comes a hair-breadth from dying, the protection from the good representative of Abadar no doubt making a difference.

Having done his best to protect the party, Durgan now switches to offense. He plants his feet and takes a two-handed overhead chop with his axe, aiming for the ogre's kidneys.

Kisaiya steps forward cautiously and slashes at the ogre, but having never fought something properly bigger than her before, she has difficulty deciding where to aim.

Round 5

Mukluk would be laughing, but the blows to Storm and now Rory had taken some of the steam out of him. He wonders what he should do, and then thinks exactly what Moose would do: spit in the ogre's eye.

Mukluk does just that, offering a (probably not) mule sized glob of magic phlegm at the ogre while uttering some clever words that Moose seems to like.

Adhesive Spittle -2 to attacks, -4 to dex for 2d4 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 rounds. DC 16 Reflex to avoid being stuck to the ground DC16 str to break free.

He wipes off his mouth and looks back to Moose to give his friend the thumbs up sign.

Barely dodging the ogre's club, Rory steps closer to Durgan. Raising an eyebrow as Mukluk spits, actually spits, at the ogre, he wonders if Mukluk is trying to get the ogre to attack him instead of everyone else. Hoping the mule-skinner will be safe he thrusts his sword at the ogre, as Storm attempts to bite the ogre and drag it to the ground

Mukluk hocks a big loogie at the ogre! Kisaiya swings wide, unsure how to handle the ogre. Durgan brings a chop down on the ogre and does indeed see the bright red of the kidney in the wound he just made. Rory brings the ogre to within one hit point of succumbing to his injuries, but not quite enough. Ameiko swings and misses, again, but Shalelu, thanks to the spittle, plunks an arrow in the great brute’s chest and fells it!.

Ameiko on Ogre: 1d20 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 3 = 11 damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 = 5
Shalelu on Ogre: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 11 - 2 = 15 damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 2 = 10

The ogre, unable to attack from unconsciousness, collapses in the greasy spittle of the battlefield.

Mukluk quickly moves over to offer the ogre's brain the business side of his pick. He might not be a great dwarven warrior, but he knows the basics of killing giants.

"Just in case he gets back up!"

coup de jerk: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 3) = 13 piercing damage

"And one more, just to be sure."

coup de jerk: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 1) = 8 piercing damage

"HAW! HAW! HAW! Now that's the best kind of giant! Good and dead!" Mukluk looks around to see how he might help with the wounded.

Before I forget, Mukluk will replace his potion of CLW with one from the stash.

Durgan immediately moves to cast Cure Light Wounds on the dying horse, sacrificing Divine Favor.

CLW: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

He then joins Mukluk in finishing off the wounded goblins, as nobody else is in imminent danger of bleeding out (other than the goblins).

Once that is done, he will Channel to heal.

Channel 1 of 3: 1d6 ⇒ 3

He then heals Rory.
Liberating Command to CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Durgan has more healing if needed, but out of prudence he will wait to see if Ameiko or Koya offer any healing before he continues.
Ameiko is a bard and so might have CLW; Koya is seemingly a cleric of L3/L4 and so would have more powerful Channels.
