Raphaeleos activates his wayfinder to shed light before looking around for signs of traps.

So many 20s...
Not only does Akrag spot and disarm all the traps, he also finds a stash of ancient coins concealed behind a trapped slab of stone.
"I guess this is what you call, plunder?!?"
Delving further into the caves and rounding a corner, the Iolite Squad discovers a half-dozen skeletal dwarves. They shed centuries of dust and cobwebs as they rise to attack the intruders with ancient picks and shovels.
Despite your desire to jump into the fray, to proceed through this area, the Iolite Squad must defeat the undead on their own. These foes pose little threat if the hobgoblins use good sense. Each of you can help with tips about battling undead foes or general battle tactics by succeeding at a DC 20 Religion or related Lore check (such as Warfare Lore or Undead Lore)

![]() |

"Stabbing isn't very effective against skeletons," Zibini observes, "because they're full of holes already."
This advice is both obvious and not particularly actionable for most of the squad.
"I met some nice skeletons once..." While he's talking absently, Zibini pushes a little confidence towards Raphaeleos.
Unless I can somehow convince you that Engineering Lore: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 is related (because they're... in a place?), Zibini has no relevant skill training.
Ah. Didn't quite succeed anyway.
Cast guidance on Raphaeleos.

"They are quite packed so anything area stuff works great! And of course healing spells", Lindevaile Tindome tries to guide the hobgoblins.
Lindevaile Tindome's Underworld Lore is mostly about prisoners and illegal activities, so unless they are forced labor or the like it doesn't help a thing. I'm pretty sure they are not herbs.
"Caitlin, you said you're good in dealing with undead?" she asks. "Let me help you think, Hilyani", she calls aid to Caitlin.
◆ Guidance on Caitlin

DC 20 Religion w Guidance (not sure if it applies): 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 = 14
"With undead, well..." Raph's words falter, unsure what to say next. He then blabbers what comes to mind on how to defeat them.

Caitlin talks about the strengths and weaknesses of Skeletons.

Skeleton Lore: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 = 27

Knowing the skeletons will do little to prevent themselves from being surrounded, Caitlin suggests a quick flanking strategy and Harsk throws in some practical smashing techniques. Sergeant Drussem and Ozaril leap into the fray, while Akrag and Gintka outflank the skeletons. After a brief skirmish, the enemies are defeated.
As the bones hit the ground, Gintka is drawn to a flash of light from one of their jangly fingers. She pries the ring off and quickly examines it. "Ack. Too shiny to not be magic!" and tosses it in the air to Lindevaile.
This heavy iron ring is shaped to look like the head of a ram, with curling horns. DC 22 to identify (Nature, Occultism, Arcana, Divine)
In the large chamber ahead, a ruined, rotting campsite occupies the east wall. The hobgoblins spend a few minutes picking through the wreckage. Sergeant Drussem says, “This must be where those dwarves made camp. A long time ago, it seems.”
After a few minutes, Ozaril exclaims, “I found something!” He lifts a small wood chest still largely preserved, and the hobgoblins open it to find ancient scrolls, a dusty tome, and a few miniature stone statuettes.
Upon reaching this area, the Iolite Squad sets out to record their findings for submission to the Pathfinder archives. It is time to do aid them with the "Report" part of the Pathfinder creed by serving as scribes, which will require a successful DC 21 Society check.

![]() |

Raph takes a good look on the ring tosses to his co-agent. "Looks familiar to me..."
Religion: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Raph has Society +0. He will pass on the reporting one.

![]() |

"How does it work? A command word or do you have to fiddle with it somehow?" Lindevaile Tindome asks Raphaelos instructions to using the ring. "I can try to use it, but I guess anyone can. I'll keep it for now but just say if you want to try it", she says and puts the ring on her finger.
"What should we write? 'Warned by the dusty wind, the heroes were prepared for the attack. And they prevailed, feeling more like a team than before.' Oh, and something about the items." she chats about the report.
+1 untrained on society, so succeeding only on natural 20. Maybe someone with a bit better bonus could try.

![]() |

"Reporting is boring," says Zibini, "but other teams' reports are useful. Only fair, I guess."

![]() |

Fortunately for the Squad, Caitlin has exactly the advice required and the hobgoblins carefully translate the ancient dwarven texts and discover clues about when the site might have been constructed. Moreover, the stone statuettes in the chest have some intrinsic value and should be brought back to Absalom.
-------------------------------------
Turning a corner through a corridor that exits the chamber, thick cobwebs and hundreds of spiders choke this passage.
“Our weapons will be no use here,” says the sergeant.
Gintka steps forward, already mixing a few vials of smoking liquid eagerly. “This should clear them out.” she giggles.
To proceed through this area, the Iolite Squad decides to smoke out the spiders with alchemy. Gintka passes a pair of fuming vials to each of her companions. Each of you can give Gintka advice on what reagents are most likely to repel the spiders with a successful DC 23 Nature or Survival check.

Despite the oracle's protestations, Zibini and Lindevaile are able to augment Gintka's vials and she smokes out most of the teeny spiders, though a few remain to harass the group as they move through the passage.
Sergeant Drussem orders her squad to regroup and rest for a moment. She turns to all the Pathfinders "Your guidance has been beneficial so far but whatever made this web caked tunnel is probably more dangerous than all these little spiders. I suggests we all take a moment to rest."
Feel free to take a 10 minute rest here and refocus or change your exploration activities or prepare for any battles ahead. Caitlin gets the final hero point reward for all the successes during the instruction challenges for the Squad.
-------------------------------------
New map
Rough stairs rise to the west, and a wide passage leads east. Thick webs cling to the walls and ceiling. A loud scrape and thud alerts the Squad to the presence of something beyond the east passage. “Wait here,” says the Sergeant, who signals her squad to stay on their guard as they press forward. One of them shouts a curse as a sharp twang echoes through the ruins—part of the ceiling above, concealed by webbing, suddenly collapses. The hobgoblins rush forward, dodging the cascade of boulders that fall and block the passage.
As the dust settles, the hobgoblins’ faint battle cries mix with a hideous chattering noise — something is attacking the squad beyond the collapsed passage. Before you have time to start digging out the tunnel to help the trainees, the ambush comes to you as well!
