Cuthalian hops off the wagon and draws his long blade. Listening.

Dark Archive

Endless Night - DAY 5

Cuthalian hears something not only slapping paws somewhere in the water (puddle?) but it seems to be eating something, or rather gnawing. Then this "something" sniffs and suddenly heads in your direction... It passes very quickly forward and then freezes as if listening and sniffing again with not letting go of a gnawed bone with a some pieces of meat from its claws.

Even hunched and creeping upon all fours, this reptilian behemoth towers over ten feet tall. Thick scales straining over overdeveloped muscles, the thing looks like a remnant from a primeval epoch, its jaw underslung and filled with protruding teeth while a spiked crest runs from its low forehead down its bent back and out to the tip of its powerful tail. Raising its heavy head, the brute’s nostrils flare wide and—blank white eyes narrowing—it shudders with a deep, reptilian sound, a noise somewhere between a growl and a hiss.

And even from this distance, you can already feel the sickening stench coming from this creature. S~!*, the Gadak whispers. I heard they lost a couple, but... He pauses, glances at those of you who have already drawn their weapons and then jumps behind the cart so as to be on the other side of the creature.

Cuthalian: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Velath: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Colgrim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Cirok: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Soryan: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Reptilian: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4

The dice perfectly reflected what I thought. First you all, then it. Gadak directed the riding lizards into the left passage, too narrow not to risk the wagon getting stuck, but suitable so that there was a barrier between the creature and the lizards. It seems to be aware of your presence, but it doesn't see you yet (here it is, the advantage of 120 feet of dark vision!). You can slightly change the position of the tokens at the beginning - I tried to arrange it as you said, but the map and your idea of the area could be different. By the way, the wagon is without a roof, let's say about 5 feet high. The gully in the center is not deep but creates a difficult terrain for medium or smaller creatures. Two stalagmites create a good cover for the creature now. Dungeoneering to identify creature. See the map.

This is a rare creature, you haven't even heard of them, but you just could guess by similar signs. It's a mutated troglodyte. Probably alchemy or magic made him like this. You have two questions!

Dungeoneering Lore:

1) Even from a distance Soryan Dirge smelled the Mutated Troglodyte. What do I think will happen, and from what distance, if the Stench becomes overwhelming? (How close before a Fort Save, and the penalty for Failure?)

2) What language and how intelligent is the Troglodyte? (If it has a 3 INT and knows Draconic, for example, I can cast Hideous Laughter on it from 40.')

My Move Action was quietly moving behind the stalagmite at half speed. (Whispering something briefly to my allies as a Free Action)

Velath, I moved your token.

Growling a guttural roar that turns into a hiss, in which you can feel both a huge hunger and some kind of ferocious territorial rage, the creature throws a gnawed bone and runs to you.

Soryan is casting a spell. Troglodyte hears a joke about dwarves and stones, but it seems too fierce to pay attention to it.

The stink is getting closer...

Velath and Soryan can shoot at it from behind the stalagmite, but the creature will have cover too (correct me in discussion thread if I forgot something about the rules of shooting in the 1e).

Soryan Dirge scurries to the back, hopefully keeping himself completely out of range of the reptilian reek.

"It was too resistant to my Enchantment; I shall attempt to trap it less any of us become overwhelmed by the rancidity."

From the (hopefully) safe distance of the rear, Soryan Dirge casts another spell, pointing at the ground directly beneath the Troglodyte. A second later a two-dimensional, glossy square appears underneath the creature, looking as though a rent in space opened to swallow the monster in an extradimensional hole.

Crunch:

Move Action: Run 25 feet to stay out of its 10-feet range of stench.
Standard Action: Cast Spiked Pit directly beneath the Troglodyte (all 4 squares).
A DC 20 Reflex Save is required to not fall in the 50-feet-deep extradimensional hole. (10 +3 +7)
Falling Damage is 5d5 (and Prone)
Piercing Damage is 2d6
Climb DC is 20 (climbing at 1/4 movement) ; each round climbing suffers 1d6 Piercing damage from Spikes on the wall of the Pit.

Edit: Looking tactically at the map, Soryan Dirge likely would Cast the Spiked Pit first, then Move to the back since the back is in a Fog and may have hampered his ability to aim the spell. DM's choice, either way.

Endless Night - DAY 5

The heat has started, as they say in my homeland.

Gadak looks out of the fog and does not believe his eyes.

Balancing elegantly on the very edge of the deadly pit, Cirok throws the dagger down. Whoosh! A heart-rending roar of pain is heard and the weapon returns to his hand, heavily bloody, so much so that it looks completely dark. A moment later, Colgrim flies past him and with a cry of rage falls on the monster. A dull hammer blow is heard, then sound of bodies colliding and immediately the sound of a body falling. Next, Velath approaches the edge of the pit and sends an arrow down (another scream of pain and rage is heard!), also managing to stay on the very edge of an obviously slippery slope into the pit.

So. @Cirok, once I will agree to such a change of dices, but only once (21 would be a miss by the way; I added additional dmg). @Colgrim here's another 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2) = 11 damage for a collision after a fall. Both you and the troglodyte take this damage. @Velath your arrow hits. You don't need a fortitude saving throw now (you not in the aura), but at the end of each turn while you're standing on the edge of this pit, you need a reflex saving throw (DC18). Now I will use these 10 and this is exactly enough.

The reptilian behemoth lets go of the grips and ends up at the bottom of the pit* with the ex-dwarf. The tightness does not prevent it from tearing with its claws and teeth and lashing with its tail. On the contrary, the pain seems to give it some kind of frenzied energy and ferocity.

*I think you are both squeezing now, which means -4 to AC and attack rolls.

Bite: 1d20 ⇒ 4 Claw: 1d20 ⇒ 19 Claw: 1d20 ⇒ 13 Tail: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Colgrim manages to block the bite with his hammer, literally inserting it into the clanking mouth, but leaves his body open to the blows of claws and tail. Colgrim tries to block the bite with a hammer, but when you prone and such an angry monster is right above you, it is very difficult to do this, and each attack of the creature reaches the target - the flesh of the drow.

Bite: 4d6 + 1d8 + 56 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 2) + (3) + 56 = 70 This is the total damage, you can apply DR three four times.

Anyone within 10 feet of the creature:

Colgrim math:
@Colgrim, summing up: you were hit for +/- 81 damage (see DR), you are prone and squeezed and in the beginning of your turn you need open a spoiler above. If you succeed Fort check, your attacks will have -10 to hit or -6 if you stand up (and get AoO) and -2 to damage.

@Everyone, Reflex DC18 at the end of each turn, when you are left on the edge. If you fall, you can immediately open the spoiler above and make a Fortitude saving throw.

Endless Night - DAY 5

oooookay...

Enraged by a new attack and acute new pain, the reptilian killing machine switches to the one who hurt him last.

Bite: 1d20 ⇒ 17 Claw: 1d20 ⇒ 8 Claw: 1d20 ⇒ 13 Tail: 1d20 ⇒ 1

dmg to Cuthalian: 4d6 + 48 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 3) + 48 = 61 (75 dmg total with falling dmg)

@Colgrim (and Cuthalian, although it doesn't seem to matter to you right now), the only way to get rid of nausea is to leave the aura of the creature. No additional saving throws, alas.

ROUND 5: PARTY IS UP!

Soryan Dirge, having spent a moment looking at Gadak to see his façade as he observes the encounter, now hears the sounds of combat going horribly wrong. 'What can I possibly do, now?'

He speaks quietly to the Drow next to him, "Look, fellow, they are all piling into the Pit -- they must have seen a Treasure on the Troglodyte that we failed to perceive and are trying to steal the magical bauble for themselves! They shall not get away attempting to keep the booty from me!" Bluff that this is the reason I'm joining the encounter, and that I'm hiding my grave concern over my allies: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (7) + 26 = 33

Soryan Dirge rushes forward, removing his Scroll of Stoneshape from his enchanted Haversack. Upon getting closer to the edge he shouts angrily at his Paladin ally, Velath Tel'quessir -- in the Sylvan language of the Fey (hoping Gadak doesn't understand Sylvan and only hears the angry tone of Soryan's voice): "I can Stoneshape a ledge or bridge of sorts so we can better reach the fight from above!"

I don't suppose there is any chance the 8 missed, AC 21 armor and magic? I'm down otherwise. Does it cause 1d6+12 with each hit? With a 1 it did miss me once. Just hoping. :)

Velath doesn't even look Soryans way as he speaks. He grabs out two more arrows and fires the arrows at the creature. Both looked flying true and it looked like 1 penetrated his thick hide. The other it appeared to be deflected. He balanced himself carefully on the edge still.

one thing, did I mention all of Velaths attack vs a smite evil opponent bypass DR. In case he has any on his first arrow.

Endless Night - DAY 5

@Cuthalian, bite has 2d6, that's why 4d6 total. Tail has d8. But thank you, I double-checked everything and alas realized that I inflicted 6 more damage to you. This still leaves you at -1, but makes the situation a bit less dramatic.

Two arrows, one after another, crash into the back of an angry reptilian. A scream of pain and rage, last in its life, and it subsides, collapsing in an incredibly heavy and smelly carcass on the two drow below.

Out of initiative. Will you stabilize Cuthalian? It's not obvious to you how close he is to death (to wait for the end of the spell). Colgrim, the stench is still monstrous but not as intense. You are no longer nauseated.
