Dismayed by the deteriorating weather conditions and the disappearance of the two mechs in the city ruins, Lapeidra can't help but feel like the team is walking into a trap. "I've got a bad feeling about this."

Somewhere in the old Panther's cab there is a small leak, and rainwater drips down onto her HUD. She wipes it with her hand and gives the controls a punch. The screen flickers unconvincingly.

"I got nothing. Lloyd, Charly? Any signatures coming through your gear?"

She focuses on her feet actuators to make sure the massive machine doesn't slip or get stuck in the mud.

Charly frowns as she remembers the day she'd gone from tech to mechwarrior. While the first sign they were under attack was the arrival of the first salvo of missiles, the first sign anything was amiss were dead comms. Being able to contact the Last of Nine was reassuring, but she still can't shake the feeling that something is about to go horribly, horribly wrong.

"Lloyd, Let's do a broad spectrum scan. Let me know what bands I should take."

Trying to Create an Advantage for Lloyd, Broad Spectrum Scanning Techniques

Sensors: 4d3 - 8 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 3) - 8 + 2 = 4 I believe that's a success.

That might be a success with style.

The inclement weather made maneuvering the Griffin more difficult. Thick mud, caked along its exposed joints, made the fifty-five tone mech feel as sluggish as a Mech twice its size. Water continually cascaded down its cockpit window, causing the world outside to blur with each thunderous step. Gunny, content with his new Mech, constantly shifted his attention from the Mech’s comms to its multilayered sensors. There was no doubt the Griffin was an upgrade when compared to the Commando, and he knew it.

While trying to keep up with the group, Gunny brought his scanners into a narrowly focused field. In an attempt to enhance Lloyd’s scans, he focused on a designated area, which in theory, would allow Lloyd to focus his scans with a little more efficiency.

“All this rain and muck is causing this stomper to move like a slug.” Gunny complained over the lance’s secured channel. “I don’t like this. It feels like something’s off.” Taking his eyes off the HUD for just a moment, he reached down into a nearby bag and retrieved a small flask. The weather was cold and damp, leaving the veteran feeling like he needed a quick warm up. With a smile, he unscrewed the flask’s top, and then held it high in the air. “Hers to thinking ahead.” He stated just before taking a long swig of its contents.

Gunny is attempting to provide a team bonus of +1 for Lloyd. His sensors are at +1.

Jack was never good with sensors.

Oh, he could take one apart and put it back together with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back, but actually reading one seemed like another language. Just looking at the interplay on the Angel's readout of how the rain was doing a bang-up job of hiding the tale of what aren't what's supposed to be here...here???

Weren't they supposed to be doing something important here? Oh bother.

Well he didn't know how to get the best reading, but he knew how to help -other- people get the best reading.

"Lloyd, I'm slaving my bi-spatial phase matrix to your own. Hopefully we can triangulate something that resembles good data here."

I also am providing a team bonus of +1. Lloyd has a +4, so he can get up to another +4 in help. Between Gunny and I he now has +2, not counting Charly's advantage.

If I understand correctly, we need a separate roll for each spoiler, right?

Lloyd frowns in concentration as he focuses for a moment on refining the transmission from Command. He doesn't like that "assault level" warning.

Sensors vs. first check: 4d3 - 8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 2) - 8 + 4 = 5

"Someone's jamming things on the Captain's end. I don't like that 'assault' word being in what she said, though. We'd better keep a close eye on our sensors... Speaking of, focus on mid-wave infrared. Near's going to be absorbed by water too much. Interferes with long-range radar bands too. Keep watch for hostile comms. Might want to cut down on our own transmissions."

His 'mech slows as he focuses more on his sensors than piloting. Taking in the readings from the others' Battlemechs and coordinating them takes most of his thinking.

Sensors vs. first check: 4d3 - 8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 3) - 8 + 4 + 2 = 5 Invoking the aspect, not sure if I can also get those +1's?

"Got them. Industrialmech heading to the mine. Phoenix Hawk heading northwest... where's Alpha in relation to us?"

After stowing away his special flask, Gunny responded over the secured channel. “What do you guys think? Head after the worker or the Hawk?” There is a chance that the worker is just that. A forced worker who may not be a legitimate combatant.”

Taking a moment to consider the Hawk, he continued. “I wonder where that Hawk is off to in such a rush. Do you guys think he is trying to reach the main assault?”

Gunny took an extra moment, after the transmission, to refocuses on navigating through the dense mud and rain. The blurred visibility made it difficult to avoid obstacles and he didn’t want to take a chance on dislodging what little armor the Griffin had. At least not due to a minor collision that could simply be avoided.

Lapeidra knows what she thinks, but it's not her decision alone to make. "Why would the digger go to the mine without its escort? That doesn't add up. Unless it's going to collapse the mine and seal everyone inside. I wouldn't put it past pirates to do something s+&&ty like that. The Locust pilot might be giving them hell, but then you'd send the Hawk too, right? I'm ready to go to the mine and find out."

Lapeidra can make nothing from this situation.

After moving through several slogs of mud, Gunny brings the Griffin in behind his designated group, and then responds. “Lapeidra has a good point. Personally, I think the worker is likely not a combatant. If I’m correct about that, we could hurry and try to intercept the digger, force a surrender, and then question the pilot. If we catch up with the Mech and it’s a combatant, then we deal with it while its out here all alone. What do you guys think?”

Quick decisions are made and the chase for the industrial mech is on. The race really isn't much of a contest given the quick moving mechs of the Stormhammers. Even Gunny in the Griffon is able to outpace the ponderously slow stride of the big digger. Following a similar track to that taken by the scout crew earlier, lead mechs first get pings on their screens with approximately five kilometers still to go before reaching the mine.

Breaking into a clearing, you all can make out the lumbering frame of the industrial mech as it moves along through rain, forest, and mud at a steady thirty-five miles per hour. Likely not equipped with the same kind of military grade sensors as regular battlemechs, it initially appears that the big mover is unaware of its pursuers.

Current range to the industrial mech is 5.

Lapeidra throttles back to stay even with the industrial mech and allow the shorter range payloads of her companions' mechs to take the lead.

"If the digger is the bait and that Hawk is circling around with its friends we'll be vulnerable. Keep a close eye on your array, Lloyd."

She opens a channel to the digger, adjusting the frequency to limit the range so as to not alert the tanks at the mine site.

"Hey big fella, where you running to? You should know we gave your buddy Deigo a pretty sweet deal. We let him live and agreed to give him a ride off this rock. Seems we're in a generous mood today. Maybe it's the rain.

"You got three options: keep running and die, turn and fight, and die, or give up and get a free ride. We'll even throw in hot meals and a shower if you're not a total asshat about it."

Keeping his distance from the comm, Gunny listened carefully as the group attempted to contact the Digger. Assuming the Work-Mech was designed for abuse, the amount of armor that thing likely carried, was a bit concerning. That, and the fact its tooling mounts had the potential to do massive damage. The group’s only reprieve, in this situation, was the fact the stomper seemed slow. At least Gunny hopped it was slow. After all, it looked slow, and he doubted anyone would put high end tech in a work horse. "That thing better be slow". He thought outload as he considered the situation.

As a precaution, Gunny flipped over the arming toggles on his control console, which brought the Griffin’s LRM’s system online. Now powered, the missiles locked into place, causing the Griffin a jolt slightly as the Mech’s arming winch finalized its rotation. Reassured that his weapon was now online, he brought the Griffin's long-range reticule up and then lock onto the Digger. Satisfied with the Griffins performance thus fare, he then sat back in his chair, took a long drag on his cigar, and then waited patiently for any sign the Digger intended to fight.

Lloyd starts making a wide circle around the IndustrialMech, keeping an eye on his sensors in case something else is coming. The situation is definitely strange, and he doesn't like the jamming on the communications with HQ. But he also doesn't like leaving a bunch of hostages under pirate control.

So, for now, he keeps watch, not thinking his little Wasp would add much to the current intimidation factor. He circles more on the north, figuring if something's coming it'll be from that direction... and if there's something powered down, well, the Mk I Eyeball might spot it when thermal wouldn't.

"What?!" A startled voice answers back across Lapeidra's comm link. "Holy s$%t, who're you? Another of Hutton's goons. I should've known that damned Grant was just toying with me when he said you lot were pulling out. Deigo the one who put him up to it?"

The big digger slows to a halt and turns to face the arrayed power of the Stormhammers. Its heavy, brutal looking arms hanging casually at its side.

"Well, it doesn't matter. I can't dig anymore in that morass anyway. You want me to go back and try, fine. You're holding all the cards, I'll do it, but I can guarantee you we won't get anywhere." There's a long crackling pause as more of what the Canopian said registers.

"Wait. Do you say something happened to Deigo?!" Panic. Fear. Both are plain in the man's voice even in the poor quality signal from the industrial mech. "S$#t! I gotta get back before it's too late!"

With that the industrial mech turns and begins to stride at its lowly top speed through the woods.

Jack frowns as the pilot of the workmech gives vague answers to a situation he still thinks is unclear. He hated things that were unclear. When things were clear he could cut out the pieces and make them fit to dance and talk or whatever he wanted. When things were not clear things just...exploded.

"Hey friend," Jack says at the workmech, loping his Hawk along to keep pace, still not seeing the need to hurry. "My name's Jack. What's your name?

Lloyd hangs back a bit and stays off to the side, keeping his eyes on his sensors in case anything tries to ambush the group.

Lapeidra pushes her Panther to its top speed of sixty-four kilometers per hour. Not nearly as swift as her lighter weight companions, or the heavier Phoenix Hawks for that matter, but nearly twice that of the slow moving industrial mech. Charly and Lloyd in their faster scouts, both hang back a bit, while Jack simply keeps pace with the running digger to try and gather more information about the situation ahead.

"The pumps!" Comes the worried reply. "Deigo locked the pumps for the lower mines. Said he'd turn them back on when he made it back safe and sound and the job was done. With our families and friends locked down there, we had to do whatever he demanded. S$#t!...."

The transmission cuts out as the mech stumbles and the pilot puts his full attention to keeping the cumbersome mech upright and on the move. After a few seconds, he pops back on the comm.

"Don't really know what the raiders were looking for. They just grabbed anyone with experience in a mech and either put them in those crap scouts or into one of these." He says. "Most took off north. A few others somewhere southeast. While I got stuck tossing dirt around in Cedarville. Waste of time if you ask me. Ain't never been anything here except timber mills and wood finishers. But apparently Hutton himself gave out the coordinates. Thought is was some League storage house or something." The disgust and disbelief in the man's voice is clear. "Total load of hogwash. The League barely recognized our existence when Stettin was a real colony. Doesn't even know we exist now. Not since the Free Worlds destroyed nearly everything or any value or use when they fell back during the second succession war."

The chatter passes the time and soon enough Lloyd is reading the power signals from the mine bright and clear just a short distance ahead. He tries to shout a warning to Lapeidra and Markus who are in the vanguard but both seem to be dead set on charging forward regardless of any danger.

Thus the two are the first to spot the smoke rising from several buildings in the compound and from one of the stationary Manticores. The flash of small arms fire occasionally bursts from buildings all around the compound. The Jenner lies on its side like a decapitated stork. Nothing but smoking wreckage left where the head and central torso used to be. The damaged Locust still sits in the same place, parked next to the main head shaft building.

As the two lead Stormhammers start to cross the open ground toward the wooden stockade one of the tanks unleashes a beam of man-made lightning across the compound and blasts a hole on one of the older buildings. Several bodies are tossed asunder by the blast.

Having forgotten the range advantage of the small Whirlwind autocannons mounted atop the mine building, it isn't until the flash of their muzzles and the telltale *pingpingping* of metal bouncing off their armor that Markus and Lapeidra realize they are already in the weapon's sights.

Watching his lance-mates rush in and engage the enemy, brought Deigon’s adrenalin to a whole new level. Inspired by their battle lust, he brought the Griffin into an all-out run. Knowing the limitations of the Griffins LRM system, he locked onto the Whirlwind cannons. After taking the time to adjust his cigar over to the right side of his mouth, he made it a point to grip the stogy firmly with his teeth. “Well now, looks like I’m just close enough to take a shot.” He stated before taking a hefty drag on the stogy. In one single motion, he exhaled the cigar's pungent smoke and pressed the LRM fire button simultaneously.

After the Mech shifted forward, as it recovered from the launch, Gunny began to chuckle while he watched the cascade of missiles fly across the sky. “Looks like it might be a bad day for those Whirlwind Cannons.”

Lloyd is much more cautious in his approach, not pushing his Wasp to anything near its top speed. Just moving forward one zone.

He does turn up the output of his sensor to maximum, letting the remaining Manticore know it's being targetted. He's not sure what it's shooting at but he doesn't really want to let it keep doing so.

Whoa.

Suddenly it became clear. Deigo, or whoever was controlling him, must be more clever than we thought. They'd left a ticking time-bomb of sorts. No doubt the mines have some waterflow filling them up, and those in their will surely drown without the pumps clearing it out.

This was good to know. Well, later. They'd need to know after getting through the guards and then it was a matter of...fixing. things. First the guards.

Forearmed with his knowledge, Jack sees Meatbag do the Steiner Recliner Scout on a Manticore and decides to follow suit.

It's then that Jack realizes his bi-spatial phase matrix is still slaved to Lloyd's TarComp and he's getting some very interesting targeting data.

Artificial lightning crackles across the open area as slams into the earth and wood fortifications. Instantly super heated water vapor violently bursts forth exploding several massive timber trunks and ripping a sizable hole in the barrier while sending shards of tree, and globs of mud and rock cascading down across the entire field. A few muddy blobs even manage to splat atop Markus and Lapeidra's mechs.

Markus unleashes the full power of his Phoenix Hawk upon the dug in Manticore. Laser light boils armor plating all along the front and main turret sections of the heavy vehicle. The molten red scars steam and hiss in the still falling rain as the heavy barrel swings around to take aim at the onrushing threat.

Meanwhile, Gunny sends a spread of missiles streaking toward the tower fortification housing the long ranged, but weak autocannons. Although the mechwarrior's aim is true, the the pirate missile load appears to be of poor quality and several of the warheads spiral uselessly off target or don't even explode upon impact. Only a pair of the ten launched warheads cause any real damage and not enough to take the defensive fortification out of the picture.

Following in the wake of Lapeidra and Markus, Jack brings his Phoenix Hawk within range of its heavy Harmon laser. With the aide of Lloyd's sensor lock, the beam strikes true adding to the damage already caused by Markus.

Charly still has an action. Then the enemy has a turn. Both fortified tanks are still operational. There is a light mech-sized hole in the stockade made by Lapeidra that removes the Overcome to pass through Zone 2.

Steiner recliner?

For some reason, Meatbags thoughts drift to some Canopian mixed wrestling episodes. There was the storyline with the clash between the BULL OF TAURUS, and the MOST RADIANT SUN SIR ARTHUR DAVION, the latter being the least liked character in the entire circus (he drew record crowds though). After beating the proud bull in a clearly fixed fight, a *masked avenger* came in, using exclusively STEINER MOVES, and accidentally killed him. Because a lifetime of hard booze, drugs, steroids and playing a completely loathworty character while being a fairly reasonable and humane human being caught up with Felix Prohaska, the real name of "SIR ARTHUR DAVION SUN RESPLENDENT", and he suffered a stroke while in the recliner.

His uncle "BIG ROCK", who did participate in the circus at the start of his celebrity carreer, quit (some people think he was the masked avenger) invested in funding drug rehab stations following the incidient. And was paying pensions to the relatives of the dead wrestler.

No time to dwadle, idiots are shooting at me!

Feel free to invoke "distracted by sudden Anime wrestling flashback" if you like. I plan to reinvoke it if Meatbag gets involved in fisticuffs at some point :)

Moving into range, Charly unleashes the fury of her Wasp against the already damage tank. One of her missiles continues to shred the beast's armor while her laser fails to cause any harm.

The first tank unleashes a barrage of short range missile fire and a medium laser at Markus' Phoenix Hawk. The first taking advantage of the clear line of sight provided by its defensive position.

The second stationary tank splits its fire sending a PPC blast and a flight of long range missiles streaking toward Lapeidra's Panther while a burst from its SureShot short range missile system and OMI laser lance out toward Charly.

Finally, the autocannons in the tower trade pot shots with Gunny, the long range ballistic weapons trying to pepper the mech of their former comrade.

Markus can Defend an SRM6 and a Medium Laser Attack. Both are at +4.

The staccato beat of the lidar and radar threat warnings turn into the saw-edged howl of locked and fired missiles. Charly executed the textbook counter for the missiles at this short range, jinking left and right, using small bursts from the jump jets to help overcome the momentum and get it going the other way.

Unfortunately that put her right in the sights of the laser. The gunner isn't as on the bounce, however, and instead of slagging her light armor, he misses as she pirouettes out of the line of fire.

Already wound too tight from the first fight and the prospect of having to apologize to Jack, the stress causes something to snap in Charly. The Wasp is already going to need an overhaul after the way she's abused it when it's not in top condition. What's another few score hours fixing it?

I believe Gunny should be in zone 5. He ran last turn, which allowed him to target the AC2’s with a range of 2/5.

As the rest of the group focuses on the tanks, Gunny moved the Griffin slightly closer and retargeted the same Whirlwind turret that managed to avoid the battery of crappy pirate missiles. It doesn’t take long before the Griffin’s systems realign and locks back on the turret. Before he got a chance to launch another volley of inferior missiles, his HUD lit up, indicating an outside targeting lock. “Crap!” Was all he could say before being overwhelmed with auto-cannon rounds. The Griffin was a much larger Mech than the Commando, which required a lot more effort to bring into any kind of defensive maneuver.

Deigon didn’t waste any time. He veered the Mech left. Then dropped its torso low by bringing the Griffin into a squat. In that last second, he throttled the Mech forward in hopes that it would cause the turrets to underestimate his position.

Piloting Defend +3: 4d3 - 8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 1) - 8 + 3 = 1 (1 armor stress)
Piloting Defend +2: 4d3 - 8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 1) - 8 + 3 = 2 (Tie)

Although he managed to avoid a couple of the high velocity rounds, his tactic just wasn’t enough. Almost immediately after bringing the Griffin back into a normal forward motion, he could hear a number of rounds slamming into the Mech’s outer armor.

After the flak from the cannons slowed, Gunny reverted back to his targeting display. Fortunately, his lock was still in place. Knowing his missiles overshot their intended target last time, he decided to adjust the display a bit shallower to compensate.

The Griffin’s missiles where hot and ready to fire, but the PPC took slightly longer to heat up. The weapon seemed to stutter as the Griffin’s main power supply diverted an enormous amount of power in order to charge it. Way more than Gunny had come to expect from a PPC. In time, the weapon came online, but seemed week. There wasn’t enough time to evaluate the problem, so he simply decided to fire it and see what happens.

The expected knockback from the Mech’s LRM’s jolted the Griffin back. As the Mech recovered, Gunny fired the PPC. A burst of energy shot forth, like a blast of pure lightening. As anticipated, the weapon's lack of power caused its shot to fizzle off into the distance. "What a piece of s&**!" He exclaimed as he watched the lightening display fade off into the distance.

Moving up to zone 4 and firing LRM-10 and PPC at the Whirlwind turret. Gunny will spend a FATE point and invoke his aspect "Bag of Bolts" to gain a +2 for the LRM volley.

Lapeidra's Panther blasts a much wider opening in the stockade, effectively eliminating it as a barrier to the interior of the mining compound. At the same time machine gun fire prattles in the wet late afternoon air. Bullets bounce of the armor of the damaged Manticore as Markus fills the air with his twin M100's. Armor cracks and chips under the barrage until a section finally gives way altogether when the Steiner pilot slams his Phoenix Hawk's fist into the front quarter panel and into the tanks inner workings.

Advancing into the assault, Lloyd fires a quick salvo of short range missiles, but the warheads almost immediately loose their target lock and go flying off to detonate among the trees and rocks of the ridge. With a curse for his luck, the Sensor-tech puts the crosshairs for his medium laser directly over the tank and fires. The ruby red beam scores a direct hit melting armor and boring a good sized hole into the enemy defenses.

Suspicion begins to mount that the missiles loaded into the pair of Wasps are somehow faulty. This time it is Charly's salvo from her Bical launcher that spiral's out of control and explodes before crossing even half the distance to the target. But also just like her lancemate, Charly is able to score a direct hit with her Diverse Optics Type 2 laser to boil away more of the tank's armor.

Advancing with cautious purpose, Jack fires a salvo of lasers at the already damaged tank. The heavy Harmon beam along with one of its lighter weight cousins slump into the earthworks causing little harm to the actual tank. The other midsized Harmon strikes deep into one of the openings caused by Markus' assault where it knocks out the enemy's own medium laser system.

Leaving the tanks to his companions, Gunny manages to just slip aside from the autocannon fire flashing across the battlefield from the high tower. Advancing the Griffin up the rise, the Stormhammer mechwarrior fires off a salvo of long range warheads that detonate all across the fortified tower. Smoke billows from defensive structure and chunks of blasted armor rain down into the mud and muck below. Unfortunately, the killing PPC blow simply doesn't manifest as the weapon malfunctions. Although, the string of curses blasting from the mechwarrior easily match the general power levels of a functioning PPC.

The desperate crew of the badly damaged Manticore fires a point blank salvo of short range heavy warheads at Markus. It's companion defender unleashes a bruising salvo against Lloyd's Wasp as a full flurry of a half dozen heavy warheads stream across the open terrain backed up by a ruby laser beam.

Continuing the long range exchange, the twin tower cannons fire again upon the larger target of Gunny's Griffin

Notice vs Overcome +2:
As you scan the battlefield for both immediate and potential threats, you spot a group of a dozen or so lightly armed fighters hurrying from one of the smaller buildings toward the central tower. They seem to be using the smoke and debris caused by the assault on the tanks and stockade as a bit of cover.

It only took a few moments for the Griffin's rearming winch to snap into place, allowing the next set of missiles to shift forward and arm. Almost immediately, the Griffin’s control panel lit up, indicating the payload was ready.

Without delay, Gunny braced himself for the kickback, and then fired. As expected, the Mech lurched back and then recovered. As soon as the firing sequence finished, he recharged the Griffin's PPC. This time he allocated more power to the weapon, which brought it up to full strength. As soon as the panel indicated the weapon was ready to fire, he fired it. The burst burned his eyes as it ripped across the sky. It was a marvel to watch, with lightening shifting back and forth in a tight network of controlled energy.

I'm sure there are lifting/throwing rules somewhere in the straight BT rules encyclopedias, but I'm not familiar with them off the top of my head. You could use it to increase a punch or kick attack.

Lapeidra notices nothing. In fact, with all the smoke and explosions, she loses track of the enemy altogether and waits for her optics to clear.

Nuts, no mecha anime shenanigans this time, I guess. :P
What would be the roll to try tipping it over? Piloting?
