Thank you!
I actually feel a little bit nervous; this is my first experience with 2nd edition, and the first time I've ever played an unfamiliar system via PbP. I'll apologize in advance for whatever I screw up, and go on record as saying please don't hesitate to point out things I screw up.
I'm going to add more details to my profile so you don't have to click on the pathbuilder link to my crunch (and so I won't be screwed if it gets erased), but that probably won't happen until tomorrow night or Thursday during the day.
edit: lol- apparently the lodge discriminates against anyone with an animal companion (and gnolls and dwarves with badger heads). good thing we have a token human to watch over this zoo.
Ethel Ayabu |
Hi folks! Super excited to play with you =)
@Dorgrum: it's going to be fine. We'll mess up sometimes, but, hey fun > rules. In the games I played so far, I found PF2 requires some perspective changes (three actions, no surprise rounds), but is ultimately easier and more flexible than PF1. It also feels harder to really screw up a character.
Also, Ethel is possibly the least approachable of this merry band. It's going to be great.
Pickle Tooth |
Pretty stoked to finally get some actual 2E under my belt. I've basically done nothing but build characters!
lol we found a common ground to be discriminated against!
@Ethel, I just saw your post in the recruitment thread. Yeah, it's good to be back. I tried to go through and message everyone from the games I was in before but most everyone has disappeared.

I picked the badger avatar for my profile, but my description is of my dwarven appearance. That’s partly because I couldn’t find a dwarf avatar that had the distinctive hair/beard coloring I wanted for him. In social settings he’ll usually default to his dwarven form (unless/until Pickle Tooth convinces him to lean into his more bestial side).
Have you two thought much about what you’ll do with your free archetypes? I was thinking barbarian would be a good fit for me (since badgers have a rage ability), but it looks like we’re kind of light on healing (and spellcasting in general), so I could look at maybe trying druid or something instead if we need it. (That low level of casting ability might be a good intro to a 2ed caster too.)
GM Axolotl |
To quote the droid from Star Tours...it's my first time too! Well, in the GM seat. We'll learn as we go.
for healing, I've seen Battle Medicine/Treat Wounds work pretty effectively. And Free Archetype does indeed make everyone a little more Swiss-Army-knifey. Also, bards are full casters in 2E, so they're more on par with clerics, druids, and wizards in this version.
Ethel Ayabu |
I was thinking about the Unexpected Sharpshooter archetype because, honestly, it's just very funny. I'm happy to pick something else that benefits the group.
My WIS and INT are not very good, so I don't have access to spellcasting archetypes, but I could take Blessed One for some emergency lay on hands. Would be interesting to have this really uncaring woman suddenly being able to make feel people better with a simple touch.
Something to keep in mind with multiclass archetypes: the earliest you can get a healing spell is level 4. Only cantrips and scrolls/etc until then.
GM Axolotl |
Let's see what happens. If we are really worried, I will handwave that Sharrowsmith's operation gives you a CLW wand on loan.
GM Axolotl |
Feel free to start chatting in the Gameplay thread; you are still on the barque, headed to Sharrowsmith's Exports, maybe a few hours to go.
GM Axolotl |
Is Ethel using the same file for her foot as her pistol? Ewww :D
Unexpected Sharpshooter is funny and cinematic.
Ethel Ayabu |
Is Ethel using the same file for her foot as her pistol? Ewww :D
It gives her shots an extra oomph. Simply not the same otherwise.
GM Axolotl |
I hate it when that happens!
Hey panegyric, can you put a link to Ethel's Pathbuilder page in her profile? Thank you!
Ethel Ayabu |
Oops, completely forgot about adding info to the profile! Really sorry, but everything should be there now!
GM Axolotl |
Thanks! Hehe, it's funny to hear you talk out of character :D
I will be visiting a friend tomorrow and will be afk for most of the day--feel free to RP as you walk to Sharrowsmith's. I'll try for a...

wow, even I didn't like the inevitability of that pun.

I’m on my phone right now but I’ll try to get my banner set up tomorrow too.
Ethel Ayabu |
so, dear party members, two questions before we treeleport to shimmerford.
1. do we have any way of healing at all? Soothe spell via the bard, healing potions/elixirs of life?
2. how much money do we have if we put all our finances together? I have 1SP, could probably get 1GP more if I sold my cooking set.
My experience with PF2 is that it can be pretty brutal if you don't heal up a bit between combat encounters. I'm fine with risking it, just wanted to mention for those who are using the system for the first time.
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
I have the medicine skill but I forgot/didn’t realize that I needed healer’s tools to really use it. I have 2 gold left, but a quick srd search looked like the basic kit is 5g, maybe?
Pickle Tooth |
I currently have 4 sp.
If I can sell something, the only things that I have which are worth any significant amount, are the two acid flasks. Which would sell for 3 gp total.
On the flip side, if our GM would allow it, I can swap out a spell for Soothe, I hadn't really considered a healing spell as a bard when building the character lol.
Ethel Ayabu |
If swapping the spell is ok for both you and the GM, perhaps we can try to roll with it for the first scenario and use our first "salary" to get the kit?
---
Regarding the healer's tools, we could afford if we sold our stuff then. How much depends on whether we sell things at half-price (default), or full price (because we haven't started our first mission and the GM's feeling very forgiving).
If we can sell things at half-price:
- Ethel: 0.6GP
- Dorgrum: 2GP
- Pickle: 3.4
Total: 5.9GP
If we can sell things at full price:
- Ethel: 1.1GP
- Dorgrum: 2GP
- Pickle: 3.4GP (and keep one flask)
Total: 6.5GP
GM Axolotl |
Swapping a spell is fine and you can sell your stuff at full price because yes, your GM is kind and benevolent. Most of the time. ;)
Ethel Ayabu |
All hail our kind and benevolent suzerain.
Ok, Ethel is selling her cooking set.
My suggestion to make the math simpler: Dorgrum and Pickle put 2GP each, Ethel puts 1GP and will owe each of you 0.5GP (to be paid as soon as she gets more money).
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
I'm really not worried about getting paid back for something that's going to benefit the whole party. Pickle might feel differently, but 2/2/1 is fine with me.
GM Axolotl |
I really didn't know y'all were that skint for money--but then again, I'm used to potions being 25 gp. Or whatever it is.
Kinda neat that bards get different healing spells. I was trying to recall some story about a bard that gave a king carbuncles or something, and instead found out about bards, filidhs, and druids, almost being a continuum, the filidhs or vates being more of soothsayers (different sites will say different things).
Pickle Tooth |

Nah, I'm good.
GM Axolotl |
Oh for Ethel's sake, Tree Stride is from same-species tree to same-species tree. What a horribly specific spell. I am going to apply Handwavium unless you'd like to roleplay the two week voyage and overland excursion to the River Kingdoms. -_______-
I swear I found a creature that did overland flight, but now I can't find it.
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
Its a magic tree- it can connect with any kind of tree the caster designates. (There, Handwavium applied, lol.)
GM Axolotl |
Paizo was down for a bit today... boo!
Do you all use Discord? We can always set up a server over there in case there are outages, or to just chat.
Ethel Ayabu |
I'm really not worried about getting paid back for something that's going to benefit the whole party.
<3 She'll craft you something in return anyway.
Do you all use Discord?
Yeap. I actually just started playing a PbP game via Discord a month or so ago. My handle is panegyric#5829
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
Hey, this is pretty much the busiest week of the year for me at work, so I apologize for falling behind right away. I should be back to regular posting on Monday or (next) Tuesday, and I’ll try to get a few posts in between now and then. I do have discord (I got it for the chat in another game) but I rarely use it. If someone posts a link to a server or whatever for this game I’ll join it and try to participate.
Ethel Ayabu |
For what it's worth, I'm perfectly fine with taking it slow for a bit.
Also, this might be way ahead of time, but I will be away in a business trip later this month (17-21). Should be able to post from my mobile, but that largely depends on how exhausted I'll be at the end of each day.
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
Thanks for letting us know, Dorgrum. Are you an accountant? :D
Good guess, but no. I work at a church.
GM Axolotl |
Well, happy Easter and a Chag Sameach and a groovy Vaisakhi to all who celebrate! :)
Your humble GM will be in The Valley of Death and then the Eastern Sierras for the next two days. Might go to Manzanar and pay respects. I’ll post at least once before I return!!
GM Axolotl |
I'm sure everyone is chilling/hunting for eggs/enjoying Paschal lamb or tofurkey today. Be hearty and of good cheer! I am on get together #2 of the day...
Ethel Ayabu |
Back from all the easter stuff, finally =)

So, to keep track of things, it seems we have 7 points of interest:
- a brown-haired human dressed all in white (went into the woods, never returned)
- a half-elf woman with beautiful silky black hair and gold armor over an amazing red dress (went into the woods, never returned)
- professional looking human woman with a white dog (went into the woods, never returned)
- nervous human man staying at the inn who really needs a shave and a trim (staying at the inn)
- dead cultist (might be worth checking his burnt-down house?)
- Mrs. McClairby who lost her cat
- Mr. Rujat’s who lost his prize cattle
Dorgrum Stonebreaker |
I'm back too! Sorry for the delay, I was just too burnt out yesterday to write anything.
Thanks for the list, Ethel. Do any of us have any people skills? I've got none, and my Charisma modifier is -1 so it's not like I'm even alright using them untrained. I could try to track people who disappeared in the woods or maybe the cat/cattle, if you want, but someone else would have to take point on pretty much any other lead.
GM Axolotl |
And no worries, Dorgrum--recovery takes time!
Heh, it would be hilarious if you all have no people skills, but I think Pickle will save the day for that area.
