The adventurers begin their adventure aboard a ship bound for Quantium, the capitol city of Nex. The Society covered their expenses for the voyage, asking them to keep their wayfinders and other signs of affiliation with the Society under wraps and travel aboard a low-profile merchant vessel to avoid attention. Though the journey is free, it is unpleasant; about the rickety Opportune, they contend with uncomfortable bunks and dusty provisions. Quantium’s port inspectors pay little mind to the Opportune’s arrival so, about an hour after dawn, they reach the local Pathfinder Lodge, Nexus House. The lodge’s staff greets them, giving them ample time to eat and freshen up before leading them to Venture-Captain Sebnet Sanserkoht in one of the lodge’s pillow-laden sitting rooms.

A young human teenage boy, adorned in full plate mail that's a tad too big for him, stumbles off the Opportune onto the pier. He runs awkwardly to catch up with the group. Slowing him down is a large halberd strapped to his left hip and a longbow strapped to his right. Both weapons are comically dragging on the ground behind him, as he approaches.
Breathing heavily, the 5' tall boy looks to the group with wide-eyed excitement. "Golly, it's great to be going on another mission!" Catching his breath, he quickly says, "I'm Dennis. My daddy says I'll grow into my armor. I'm a real good fighter. I've been practicing with my new bow, too!"
As he swings around to show off his bow, his halberd nearly knocks an elderly gentleman off the pier into the water. "Oh, sorry mister. You'll be okay." Turning back to the group, he doesn't notice others grumbling about the unpleasant journey. On the contrary, he remarks, "Wow! What a fun trip! I've never been on such a nice boat before." It was, indeed, his first time on any boat.
Dennis continues talking animatedly, often interrupting himself, as he takes in the sights and sounds of Quantium.

The corners of his mouth occasionally twitch downward into a frown, but he pulls them back up as soon as he notices. He does not sit when escorted to the venture-captain's sitting room, but stands rigidly at attention with his back to the wall.
"Iltag," he offers as an introduction. "I am here as part of an exchange program between the Pathfinder Society and the government of Oprak."

She rolls her eyes as Dennis nearly knocks a bystander off of the pier but manages to hold her tongue. At the lodge she immediately heads to the kitchen and helps herself to a large mug of ale and heads to take a bath.
She arrives at the briefing in a timely manner and takes a seat. "Rufus, Gyere ide. Ül."
The dog pads into the room and lies down at his mistress's feet.
The woman nods to the group. "I'm Zaza the Measure. I'm a sorceress."

Mimi is getting used to the long sea voyages needed to reach the locations of Pathfinder Society missions, but even she's a little put off by the woeful conditions on the Opportune. So it is with no small relief that she carefully walks down the gangplank to solid ground once again. "Good reeddence you baleful barge."
Before marching off to find Nexus House, she adjusts the sheathed rapier at her belt so that it can be easily reached; it's ornate silver hilt shines in the bright sun. She flicks the tails of her long royal-blue coat and it settles again comfortably on her shoulders. Finally, she very carefully places her prized wide-brimmed cavalier hat on her head at just the right angle and fluffs out the flamboyant crimson feather protruding from it. A long mop of bright red hair falls down past her shoulders, framing a pair of clear green eyes set in an attractive, light-skinned and freckled face.
Once at the local Society lodge, she introduces herself. Sweeping her precious hat dramatically across her front, she bows. "I am Mimi de Valence at your serveece. You may call me juste Mimi. I am pleezed to make all of your acquaintances"

A bronze-skinned gnome wearing a bright crimson sash and lavender saree stands beside a wooden table holding a lumpy parcel covered in velvet cloth. A multitude of bangles, earrings, and necklaces jangle musically as she speaks. “Welcome to Nexus House! I am vash-vatom Sebnet Sanserkoht, at your service. And may I presen—”
“VrFrph Zircurs!” A muffled voice calls from beneath the cloth, cutting Sebnet off. With a sigh, Sebnet pulls the velvet aside to reveal a grinning skull. The pink lights glowing in each of the skull’s eye sockets twinkle. “As I was saying... the great Zykyryz! Sebnet, I thought we worked this out? I promised to stop doodling on your table, and you promised to quickly pull the curtain to give me a dramatic reveal!”
Gnome and skull both tilt their eyes down to the table’s surface, where an ink pen rests next to numerous crooked spirals, as if someone had drawn them with the pen held in their teeth. Zykyryz reacts first. “Er, that just goes to show my powers of divination are a-head of their time — hey!” The skull is muffled as Sebnet unceremoniously drops the velvet back in place, shaking her head as she claims a nearby seat. “Our humorous friend here, Pathfinders, is why we sent for you. We don’t have too many details, but Zykyryz, as she’s calling herse—” From beneath the velvet, “Those letters do not get enough love in your chronicles! It’s a crime not to use them!” Sebnet’s eye twitches ever so slightly, but she continues. “She’s taken the name Zykyryz for now because she likes the sound of it, but she’s almost certain that wasn’t her name before. We discovered her in the vaults of the Grand Lodge. Unfortunately, nobody could figure out who or what she was, as if she never existed! However, I have come to believe she’s one of the Arclords of Nex.
“Other recent events provide evidence to support this theory as well. Agents of a long-time foe of ours, the night hag Aslynn, have been snooping around anywhere I went to do research. It’s as if the more we learn about the skull, the more others do as well.
“I need you to take Zykyryz into Quantium. Follow her hunches and premonitions about where she can go to remember who she is. Return here when you’ve gleaned all you can, and together we’ll try to discern why Aslynn is after her before whatever scheme she’s up to comes, dare I say it... to a head.”
Sebnet pulls the velvet cloth from the now-chortling Zykyryz, suggesting the agents decide who among them wants to devote a free hand to carrying the mission’s star. "So who carries her, and do you have questions?"

They’ve been lobbying for control over Nex since he disappeared.” Sebnet answers Zaza. "I think Zykyryz is an arclord based on recent events. Am I sure? Not really, and I might be all wrong. That is where you come in, to find who truly she is. "As for Aslynn, I am not sure if she will interfere with your mission, keep yourselves on your toes, but be viligant as well of her interference. Aslynn is a powerful night hag who has plagued our operations for nearly a decade. You might now be able to guess why you were instructed to hide your wayfinders. It’s possible local and veteran Pathfinder agents are known to her spies, but that’s less true of those newer to our Society. So long as her agents don’t know that you’re connected to this lodge, you should be able to walk freely.” she advises Mimi, thinking if she has answered her questions with an accent not that familiar to her. "I have no intelligence as to the presence of her forces here." she shakes her head to Iltag. "If you have no more questions, you can head out to the city. And I have letters for you too." she gives them two scrolls.
I trust this letter finds you well after your voyage. I wish the Society could have found a better ship for you to take to Quantium, but the secrecy of your trip has acted like an invisible shroud, guarding you as you sailed. By now you have met our... your little burden. Vash-vatom Sanserkoht strongly believes that discovering the truth behind this mobile migraine (dare I say migration?) is in all of our best interests, and could unlock new avenues and allies for us in Nex.
To this end, it would be very helpful to the Envoy’s Alliance if you would be on the lookout for new allies while you conduct your investigation in Quantium. Even those who may seem misguided at first might learn better ways, and bring benefit to all.
Yours,
Fola Barun
I agree with our archivists that we need to identify and catalog all of the things that have entered our vaults but shipping one of them off to Garund just because she can talk isn’t wise — and I’m not just saying that because she called me a “rusty shovel” and insulted my beard. If you’re reading this, however, it means that I’ve been overruled... again.
While you’re investigating things in Quantium, the Vigilant Seal recommends that you keep the skull’s presence as discreet as possible, and I do recognize this is no small thing that I ask. More importantly, keep information about the skull and any magic linked to her on a need-to-know basis. I trust your judgment if you feel certain allies of the Society can be trusted with knowing more, but I also trust you to know where those limits are. Keep on your toes down there — something you should remind your chatty friend that she can’t do.
Eando Kline
After the agents read the letters, "I observe the goals of these two factions could be at odds with each other. And as a GM, I should note that accomplishing one mission might preclude the PCs from completing the other. I advise you to decide in advance which faction’s mission you want to prioritize, but I can’t give any specific advice on either."
She also gives the a list of people and places they might want to check out, which she has thoughtfully prepared on a piece of parchment for them in advance, and a large box of consumables to take what they only need.
• A bureaucrat at the Bandeshar palace
• A certain location at the docks
• Two persons in the Merchant’s League
• A nearby nature preserve
• A priest at Scrivenbough library
• The Warlock’s Walk

He tries, not very hard, to keep a straight face.
When the group is discussing faction missions, the fighter says, "I'm a Horizon Hunter." He stands proud and quickly continues, "But I think it's nice to make new friends. I vote for the Envoy's Alliance mission!"
Before the group leaves, Dennis surprisingly does think of one question. He asks, "If we're supposed to be all secret-y and hiding our wayfinders, won't we be obvious if we have a cool talking skull with glowing eyes with us?" He continues to marvel at Zykyryz.

I see no reason to keep her bundled away." She pauses for a moment in thought. "Still, some discretion is likely wise. We should probably avoid parading her about in the open too much. Fortunately, Sebnet tells me that there are few places in the world where people are as willing to accept the magical and fantastical as normal as the streets of Quantium. Even a talking skull like me is unlikely to cause a scene. So yeah, my obvious presence will be as normal as anyone." she continues, but she vigorously retorts when Zaza mentions a bag to put her into. “Absolutely not! I refuse to be treated like a bag of bones! I don't like your idea.” she tells Zaza.
The Pathfinders exit Nexus House to a bright morning as the sun climbs toward fluffy clouds high above. The streets of Quantium flow with uninhibited magic, an arcane wonderland unlike any other major city across Golarion. From the stairs of Nexus House alone, they can see an ice cream cart run by a protean woman, a gathering of oozes being led by a wizard down the street as they absorb various refuse and waste. From a distance, a golem marches inexorably onward around the edges of the city. As they reach the bottom of the stairs, Zykyryz whistles flirtatiously at a particularly tall ghoran woman, whose glance bounces off of her with an eye roll. The enormous Bandeshar palace sits in the middle of the city’s lake, surrounded by serene waters and flying carpets. To the far west of the city is the Scrivenbough library, the red stone sticking out among the other buildings.
"Anyway, let's go ahead the Bandeshar Palace since that is the first on my list." Zykyryz leads you to your first stop. The Bandeshar was once the palace of Nex himself. It’s currently the home of the Council of Three and Nine which governs the nation as well as hundreds of functionaries and government officials. Zykyryz leads them to retired Pathfinder human archivist Igrigi Lokar.
“Here we are in the headquarters of the nation. It’s a stretch to call it a brain-trust if you ask me...” Zykyryz declares to them.
"Hello, hello! How may I help you?" asks Igrigi.
At this point for each destination on the list, you make interactions with people or places using any of the skills provided or any appropriate skill justified by a good roleplay to help Zykyryz recall a memory about her former interactions from that site. For your first stop, the Bandeshar Palace the skills are DC 18 Diplomacy DC 18 Deception, DC 16 Pathfinder Society Lore, or DC 18 Society, or any appropriate skill justified by a good roleplay at a higher DC. When the group meets Igrigi, Dennis quickly finds out that it is exactly as boring as it sounds. However, to help his new friend, Dennis greets the archivist, "Hi Mister! I'm Dennis. Is this a real palace? Do you give tours here? I'll bet your work here is real interesting." He's quite certain the work here is dreadful. Dennis triggers something in Zykyryz mind when he mentioned 'give tours'. "I remember now, I used to converse with Igrigi when I visited Nexus House’s libraries. He tours me around the library while looking for the books I need." But the archivist is clueless. "Yes, of course, this is a real place, you silly. I certainly don't just give tours around the library, and I can't remember a talking skull that I toured around." he quickly dismisses the idea when Dennis mentions that his work is interesting. "As for her, well, I don't know, seeing that she is talking, she might be a mimic, I could say. They are common here, anyway."
You successfully recover a memory for Zykyryz.
Zykyryz asks them to immediately go to the docks before she explodes and rants about being called a mimic. "He compares me to a mimic?! How dare him!" she rants to them after they take their leave from the palace. She then leads them (but still ranting) to the easternmost point of Quantium, from where they can see the edges of the Valkus Isle. Tiger points out a small vessel. It's a bit hard to see from the distance, but it looks respectable. (not the Opportune).
"That one there, the one with the square sails. It looks humble but it's fit for a powerful wizard such as yourself."

Dennis continues to chat with Zykyryz, laughing at all the head comments. Turning to Zaza, Dennis helpfully suggests, "I'm no expert, but maybe no disguise?"
At the docks, Dennis looks onto the water but only sees the luxurious Opportune. Not understanding Zykyryz disparaging remark, the youngster sighs dreamily, "I hope the food is as good on the return trip!"
After walking with the group to the market, Dennis says to Zykryz, "No offense, Z, but it isn't super fun just talking to boring people." While others are engaging the merchant, Dennis asks Zykryz, "Oh! Maybe an arm-wrestling duel at the next stop?" He quickly adds, "I mean, not with you, of course. You're 'armless enough." He laughs.

Zaza shakes her head. "I am not ashamed of you in the slightest. I merely suggest a bit of subterfuge in order to protect you by preventing any agents of Aslynn from easily determining your location. Neither of us wants you to fall into her hands."

On the way to the outsider Zaza is distracted by a bolt of vibrant purple cloth being sold by one of the vendors.

You are my supplier of rare magical reagents and skymetals for my experiments." she tells the extraplanar exntrepreneur. "Don't you remember me?" Zykyryz asks. To be honest, I think we just met. But yes, I supply rare magical reagents and skymetals but not for everyone. Hmmm... Now that you mentioned it, I remember somebody that I used to regularly sell my limited stocks but I seem to not remember the name..." she tells them.
You successfully recover another memory for Zykyryz.
As that goes on, Zykyryz seems distracted by somebody that sports an asymmetrical array of razor-sharp crystals from his head in lieu of hair. “With head-spikes like that, he could be a literal headhunter if you got him angry!” she exclaims which makes the man turn his head to the group, not angry but flashing a bright smile. "You are right with the head-spikes! But I am not that hotheaded as you might think." the merchant then bows. "My name is Olorthu. You have visitors to your shop, I can see, Ladhlia. I just passed by, anyway. I sell diamonds, if you want to buy." he tells them with a wink.

Zykyryz tells them. Olorthu somewhat nods, thinking if he really sold something like that, and to whom. "I think I did but I can't remember the name. What is your name again?" he asks to which the talking skull replies "Zykyryz" while explaining that she believes it is not really her name. "Well, I can't be of help because I really can't remember the name, but one thing is sure, it is not Zykyryz."
"Diamonds are a status symbol, and women and men alike love it. Diamond has a nice reflectivity that can dazzle anybody! Just like mine!" he then projects his hair, trying to reflect light on it to dazzle anyone, but the crystals on his head are too rough to reflect much light. "You can color your hair if you want," he tells Dennis as he pats his head, treating him like a child. Anyway, I am gonna take my leave." and from there he goes.
Another memory unlocked.
"I think we need to go." Zykyryz tells them. "I heard from Sebnet that a recent Pathfinder mission involved eliminating a smuggling ring operating under the city, and the conflict had spread up to the surface in this area. It is actually in the sewer! We might unlock more memories there, quick!"
Everyone goes and upon arrival, Zykyryz indicates a nearby manhole cover that leads to Quantium’s putrid sewer system. "Okay, everyone, go down now." she tells them to go down the sewer to check what they can find there.

Haha! But it is so funny. Look at your faces now!" she adds. "Anywayy, let's continue our memory-hunting, I'm serious now."
Zykyryz first leads them to the docks, until a distinctive cylindrical building of red brick comes into view. This is the Scrivenbough, a fortified library complex dedicated to Abraxas, demon lord of forbidden lore and magic. The sight of the building might stir something within the skull’s memories. “Okay, so next we go to the library of demon lord Abrax — actually, strike that. At the Scrivenbough, Dennis whines. "A library? Who likes reading? Not me. That's for sure." But the lad brightens when he hears about a demon lord. Spying a nerdy-looking fellow with thick spectacles carrying a stack of thick tomes, he runs up, "Hey Mister! Is this the library? I don't like libraries. I'm not a reader. But is there really a demon lord here?" After barely pausing to breathe, he continues, "What's Nethys' Twin Temple?" Dennis tries not to look too bored waiting for the answer.
