Research Rat |
Research Rat’s Engineering: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
"Here, let me see that!" Research Rat starts rewiring the cameras. "That should help."
DM Kludde |
The new set of hospital room is remarkably squox-free, but otherwise unexciting. Dark shadows play tricks with the light, as if having a mind of their own.
The cameras briefly flicker back online, enough to get an idea of the layout of nearby rooms
I've made the fog transparent, so you know what rooms are on this side. The glimpse from the camera isn't enough to see what is in them
Vaidra |
Vaidra heads for the double doors in the middle of the room (into A11). She takes a perfunctory look, then opens the door.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Chance the Fortunaut |
Chance comes forward to back up Vaidra. "Just in case you need a buddy, I'm here!"
DM Kludde |
The double doors lead to a large operating room. A computer in the corner is still active, and emit some weird static noise Krrrkkvaidrakkkrrrkkchancerrrkhhkkkphelpskkrrkkkksssstalgothvolitarekkkssss oooorktekkkkkrrhkkk
There's a counter near the operating bed, for all the strange shifting shadows present in this room, none of them seem to be near a vial with orange liquid, making it stand out like a bright light in this room.
Chance the Fortunaut |
"That computer just said all our names. That has to be significant, right?" Chance looks at the screen to see if there is a visual message in addition to the oral one.
Vaidra |
Vaidra also keeps her distance from the orange vial, but looks into all the dark corners in case something interesting is hiding there.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Talgoth |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"And not remotely creepy," Talgoth says drily as he comes up to the door to take a look at the room. At the sight of the glowing vial, he murmurs a couple of arcane words, and starts scanning the room with detect magic.
Jortek Omek |
Jortek rolls his eyes as there is nothing exciting going on again. He proceeds into a something circular area or room (A12).
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Phelps Amurun |
Phelps looks at the liquid to see if he can determine whether it is the liquid needed for the vacuum machine they saw earlier.
Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
DM Kludde |
Chance mobves closer to the computer, but the machine explodes before it can emit further names.
When Volitare inspects the vial of liquid, she gets a vision of Sikooli, the blue-hued Lashunta mother, injecting a liquid into the machine in the operating theatre, into a vial filled with shifting shadow. The injection device seems special, a syringe inscribed with strange symbols.
Research Rat |
Research Rat swats Chance when the machine explodes. "That is what happens when you don't let the professionals handle the computers! See what a mess you caused?!"
Chance the Fortunaut |
Chance, on the other hands, is undaunted. "Hey did you see that, everyone? I exploded that computer with my brain! I think I may be developing a new psychic power!"
We just walked through A11, right? Chance walks through to A10, and then A12. Afterall, there may be more computers to explode.
DM Kludde |
A10:
This exam room contains simple tools and a thermal body scanner. A datapad on the southern desk contains corrupted files and an audio recording.
A12:
This combination lounge and supply room is stocked with tables, shelves, and cupboards. A book on the desk is entitled On the Theoretical Hybridization of Extraplanar Magic with Modern Technology.
A freshly cleaned tea set sits on the table.
Chance the Fortunaut |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Chance packs up the book and Ajanu's tea set, as both are obviously valuable, especially the tea set, because who doesn't love tea?
"We're good!" She pokes her head through the door. "No space monsters jumped out at me from the shadows and ate my face! Let's go around to the other side!"
After everyone rejoins her in A2, she moves north into the room that is west of A15. My mini is marking the spot, and I moved everyone else's minis into A2.
"Okay, let's see what's behind this door! Maybe we'll find more stuff for the machine!"
Chance the Fortunaut |
"So we're searching for a syringe with weird runes on it? Did Ajanu's mother design every aspect of her hospital to be creepy?"
Talgoth |
"Maybe she was trained in medicine by drow," Talgoth mutters, as he joins Chance at this new door. "I knew some on Apostae who put creepy runes on everything they deemed of any real value to them."
Chance the Fortunaut |
Chance shakes her head. "See, I don't get that. On Worlan, we believe in hospitality. If you find a stranger sleeping in your bed when you come home, you make sure they have the fluffiest blankets, make them breakfast and then refill their supplies before sending them on their way." Chance looks around. "You know, instead of tearing this place down, the locals could turn it into a museum. 'Pet the squoxes! Have tea with an unliving experiment! See the shadows that want to eat your face! Learn why all this was a bad idea so we don't repeat it!'"
Now that she's opened the next door, Chance looks around the room. What does she see?
DM Kludde |
Maybe they're safety runes? Warning: Negative Energy?
When Chance picks up the tea set, she sees a vision of Sikooli and Ajanu drinking tea. What a peaceful moment.
A3:
The exterior windows in this large office are boarded up.
The boards are a false window covering that easily swings open. Footprints on the windowsill indicate this window entrance is regularly used by a humanoid.
A framed photo of Ajanu holding a squox sits on the desk.
Chance the Fortunaut |
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8 Perceive what?
"Is this cute or what?" Chance picks up the photo of Ajanu holding a squox and shows it to the other players. "Hey, I thought of another addition to the museum. A photo booth where you can pay for images of yourself playing with squoxes!"
Talgoth |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Talgoth pushes the false window covering partway open with the end of his rifle. "Someone has been coming and going here pretty regularly," he says, pointing out the tracks.
Is Ajanu still with us? Talgoth's first guess would be him, but he would be also be interested in the borai's reaction if it wasn't him.
DM Kludde |
Ajanu is waiting in the operating theatre, but if you want to ask him something, he's available. It looks like indeed, this is the passage that Ajanu used to get in and out of the hospital.
Together with the tea, the photo might make a good memento to put the soul of a ghost at ease, once their main reason for lingering on the material plane has been removed.
The next door reveals a hallway. There's a garden on the far end and a few doors.
Vaidra |
Vaidra moves up to look in the garden before focusing on the other doors. Just in case there might be something in there.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
DM Kludde |
The garden is full of sickly plants that are barely alive, though some berries have been nibbled off one of them. Some tiny footprints in the soil indicate these plans are visited every now and then.
Vaidra also notices something far more alarming overhead: a black lash of clumped-together venumbrites ready to pounce on her...
Engineering check to disable, or mysticism to sever the negative energy connection
Phelps Amurun |
Engineering Roll to Disable: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
That's a nasty trap. These things didn't seem that hostile.
Jortek Omek |
Jortek lets the others do the disabling and whatnot while he serves as their lookout to whatever threats that may come upon them. "Is it done already?" he says impatiently to Phelps that is working on disabling the trap.
Vaidra |
Vaidra leans back out the way and tries to help Phelps disable the weird nanites.
Engineering aid: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Unfortunately, her nanites are a little wigged out by the shadow beasties and Will Not go near them to help with disarming.
DM Kludde |
Phelps gets rid of the danger. Volitare finds there is still some life in the plants, but they are not going to hold out a lot longer against this corrupting influence.
There's not much further of interest in the garden. It must have been pretty once, though.
Talgoth |
"Some of my former, ah, 'employers' would probably like you, Jortek," Talgoth muses quietly. "You strike me as a fellow who's happiest when bashing things." The lanky half-orc then moves forward to see what else might be beyond where Vaidra stopped.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Chance the Fortunaut |
With the whole door-opening mandate, Chance works on opening another door into the round room. "What do you think is in here?"
DM Kludde |
The round room is the garden, actually. My bad for not updating the map
Chance the Fortunaut |
Alright. Chance looks at the two doors south of the garden and flips a coin to determine which door she should open.
1 = Small Square Room
2 = Longer Rectangular Room
Coin Flip: 1d2 ⇒ 1
"Let's do this one!" Chance goes South and opens the small square room. "Hello? We're doing an inspection!"
Jortek Omek |
Jortek smirks at Talgoth's compliment. "Recommend me to your former employers if you still have contact with them. We might agree more onto something." He tells him as he also moves forward with Chance who calls out to the South. He rolls his eyes as she attempts to says hello when he assumes that they are the only persons there. "Why don't we just enter?" and goes ahead of them.
DM Kludde |
There's no response to Chance's call. The room is a laborotary kept at an unusually cold temperature. There's messy laboratory counters which hold scattered research equipment, and a vat containing a swirling black liquid.
There's also a computer to explore.
Phelps Amurun |
Phelps ears perk up (literally) A computer you say? as he moves up to check it out.
Computer check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Obviously he is too excited to explore the computer properly.
Hackrat |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Hackrat scurries over to investigate the computer before Chance can get close enough to accidentally blow anything else up.
Computers: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Woot! Hackrat just earned his wage for the day!
Chance the Fortunaut |
Sheesh. Blow up one computer, and that's that. Reputation ruined with Dataphiles forever.
"Do we know we're the only ones here? We've already met a borai, his ghostly mother and a bunch of squoxes, which I cannot talk to but Volitaire can. There might be more people!" She pauses. "Besides Worlan rules of hospitality clearly state that guests must announce themselves the first time they walk into someone else's home."
DM Kludde |
The computer shows logs that indicate Dr Sikooli and her research assitant were investigating a way to fuse nanites with energy from the shadow plane, creating venumbrites.
A video recording shows distorted images, with equally distorted sound “No more… mistakes… It was… supposed to end like this…”
Among the lab equipment is a large syringe, fitted with arcane runes symbols. From the computers logs it is clear the arcane marking indicate 'danger', 'shadow energy', 'not for ingestion'.
You can roll a perception check
Talgoth |
Talgoth and Hackrat speak quietly as they compare the computer logs to the syringe's markings. Neither seems to care much for the device.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Phelps Amurun |
Phelps looks around.
Perception check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
And is very oblivious
Jortek Omek |
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
"Does the syringe still contain something in it?" Jortek asks, acting interested with the syringe.
Chance the Fortunaut |
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Chance meanwhile, is staring at the picture of the research assistant. "Who is that?"
Have we been told of a research assistant before?
