She grins at her comrades and says in a harsh voice Greetings, name Kazkoya.

A well-toned, athletically built woman with long amber hair and slightly pointed ears strides in with an air of confidence. She's covered in gleaming plate mail and a longsword is sheathed at her hip. A hefty shield, bearing the symbol of Iomedae, is slung over her back
She offers a bright smile at those present.
"Greetings, everybody!"
She announces joyously.
"I'm Franzine. Shield Maiden Franzine Morgenstern of Iomedae. But, you can just call me Franz."
She shakes hands all around.
"It will be a pleasure adventuring with you all. I can't wait--" she suddenly stops short when she notices the goblin, barely knee high, fidgeting with his floppy hat below her.
'Oh my goodness!!!" she squeals with glee.
She kneels down and pinches the goblin's cheek. He squints at her in slight annoyance.
"Well, aren't you just A-Dor-Able!”
She gives him a little pat on the head and stands. She nods in approval, a wide grin on her face as she looks around at her new companions.
"I can tell we're going to be a great group of friends."

When you arrive, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin stands over an imposing desk, studying a large map. Several notes and documents lie scattered about the desk, seemingly in an ordered disarray with several stacks of notes about ancient Osirion manuscripts in one pile, a set of sketches of Osiriani relics in one corner, and so forth. Ambrus looks up with a furrowed brow as he pushes another pile of notes aside. "Well, you’re finally here. Great! We had best hit the ground running with this next assignment. There’s a matter in Osirion, at the Sothis lodge, that requires great care on the Society’s end. You have all proven yourselves worthy agents and I thought this might be a good opportunity to put your skills to use. The first thing you should be aware of with this mission is that—"

KRAAKOOOM!

Suddenly, an enormous explosion rocks Skyreach tower, and Valsin’s eyes grow wide. He rushes around his desk and throws open his door before prompting, "All of you, come with me!" Outside, large flames dance from inside a shattered window on one of Skyreach’s higher levels. A loud, melodic tone rings out from Ambrus’s wayfinder. He takes a moment to open its cover and then puts it away. "Pathfinders, the Grand Lodge is under attack. I need you to head up to that room," Ambrus commands, pointing at the shattered, fiery window above, "and see what’s going on. I’ll try to assess things here on the ground floor and get everyone to safety. Be careful. If my suspicions are correct, this has something to do with the recent attacks on lodges across the Inner Sea. If you find any intruders, try to take some alive! I’m counting on you."

You run off in the direction of the explosion. Reaching a hallway between two flights of stairs, you run smack into a quartet of humanoid creatures trying to make their way downstairs. Seeing you block their path, they draw weapons and attack.

She whispers out of the corner of her mouth with an amused grin.

Noticing the enemies approaching, she gets serious.
"To arms, to arms!!! Archers at the ready!!! Spellcasters, ready spells!!!”
Franzine shouts as she holds her sword high.

Glaring at the enemy in blue, she valiantly strides forward, sword and shield at the ready.
When she's about 25 feet away from blue, she bangs her shield with her sword and snaps her shield in front of her.
"I have strict orders to harshly discipline anyone found wandering the halls without a pass."
She scowls and waves her sword menacingly.

Trigger: An enemy damages your ally, and both are within 15 feet of you.
Your foe hesitates under the weight of sin as visions of redemption play in their mind’s eye. The foe must choose one of the following options:

• The ally gains resistance to all damage against the triggering damage equal to 2 + your level. After the damaging effect is applied, the enemy becomes enfeebled 2 until the end of its next turn.

At a certain point, the creatures get the Shaken condition where you can persuade them to surrender. ◆◆ Diplomacy/Deception/Intimidate to persuade a shaken enemy to surrender. Once they surrender, they are removed from Initiative.

Reactive Shield:
You can snap your shield into place just as you would take a blow, avoiding the hit at the last second. You immediately use the Raise a Shield action and gain your shield's bonus to AC. The circumstance bonus from the shield applies to your AC when you're determining the outcome of the triggering attack.

Bakbat sends streams of fire at Yellow, White and Blue. White barely avoids getting scorched but Yellow and Blue aren't so lucky. Blue takes a hit to the face which immediately shakes his resolve. Yellow takes a hit to his leg but shrugs it off and keeps fighting. Kazkoya pokes White and does damage but is not enough to sway White's resolve. He then tries to convince red to surrender but Red shrugs off his words and keeps fighting.

Franzine and Quetzahl both swipe at Blue and Red but neither blow connects. Through the wild melee, two more of the humanoid creatures slink down the stairs and try to cross the hallway, sticking to the sides of the passage to try to get to the other stairwell.

Green runs down the stairs and the hallway, stopping only to try to poke Franzine with his shortsword...

Pink runs down the steps and tries to get through but only finds the entire hallway blocked. He gets close and draws a dagger, ready to throw at the next target.

Anjo sends two arrows at Red. Both strike center mass and bring Red down. Anjo then tries to get Blue to surrender but Blue only shrugs off the threat.

To be clear -- you can only attempt to convince them to surrender when they're shaken. Regular Intimidate/Demoralize checks work as normal, but they won't surrender. Anjo's intimidate check wouldn't have succeeded regardless.

Yellow pulls out a dagger, hurls it at Bakbat then runs down the stairs and escapes.

Glimpse of Redemption:
Trigger: An enemy damages your ally, and both are within 15 feet of you.
Your foe hesitates under the weight of sin as visions of redemption play in their mind’s eye. The foe must choose one of the following options:
• The ally is unharmed by the triggering damage.
• The ally gains resistance to all damage against the triggering damage equal to 2 + your level. After the damaging effect is applied, the enemy becomes enfeebled 2 until the end of its next turn.

Reactive Shield:
You can snap your shield into place just as you would take a blow, avoiding the hit at the last second. You immediately use the Raise a Shield action and gain your shield's bonus to AC. The circumstance bonus from the shield applies to your AC when you're determining the outcome of the triggering attack.

Quetzahl steps up and sends a fireball at White but does not hit. Kazkoya and Big Tusk work together and gore White, though Kazkoya's attempt to scare White does not succeed. White's resolve appears to waver as Kazkoya and Big Tusk clobber him. Franzine slashes at Green twice and wounds him with her first slash. She then moves to try to block the stairs.

Emdi bellows to White to surrender. White, with freedom so near, stops dead in his tracks and realizes that surrender is probably the best solution (seeing that he's also seriously wounded). He drops his weapons and heads back to the group.

Combat Over

Kazkoya sends Big Tusk to find the remaining escapees but the animal returns, having lost the trail.

As you catch your breath and take control of the prisoners, Sorrina Westyr arrives in the chamber. Sorrina is also attempting to investigate the attack and is surprised to find you here. She tends to your wounds (you're all healed to full) and tries to determine what happened here.

Shortly after Sorrina’s arrival, another figure enters the room: a hobgoblin man clad in heavy armor, carrying a wicked looking halberd. As he enters, he’s tinkering with a humming wayfinder and, noting that things seem to have settled down for the moment.

"Ah! Toldrar! Glad you're here. These are the Pathfinders who responded to the initial alarm."

She turns back to you, saying "This is Toldrar. He's the new Head of Security for the Grand Lodge, but I'll let him tell you more about himself."

Still a bit preoccupied with his Wayfinder, Toldrar greets you and shakes your hands. The wayfinder's humming ends with a brief chirp, which causes Toldrar to become elated and sport a large grin. He pockets his wayfinder, lightly bobbing his head with excitement.

"Ah, Pathfinders, it’s been an exciting day, hasn’t it? I’ve been hard at work lately, working with your Spells and your Swords to improve defenses around the Grand Lodge. Gods know it was due for an overhaul. Well, I can say that the new defenses work! While it will take some time to reimplement all of the defenses that are getting used up or destroyed today, the fact of the matter is that they worked. Even the initial implementation of the wards and everything else seemed to have dealt a major blow to our attackers today, and I consider that a splendid success. From the looks of things, we’re under attack by the Onyx Alliance, a ruthless mercantile organization from Shadow Absalom!"

"We’ve had other recent run-ins with the Onyx Alliance, but now is not the time for a history lesson. We’re still under attack! But I think we can make quick work of these intruders. See, I know something they don’t: I can see where they are. Well, not directly. It’s more of a ‘fumbling about in the dark while someone holds a candle at the other end of the room’ situation, but we still know plenty that we can use to sort this all out. According to the wards and reports I’m receiving, the attackers are spread out inside Skyreach, and we have a general understanding of where they are. I think I can gather a group to clean up what’s left. Since you’re already here, though, I think I’ll let you take care of everything on this floor while Sorrina and I work through the rest of Skyreach." Toldrar gives a nod and another smile. "Let’s get to work, shall we?"

Reports state that there are a number of sizable creatures in the hall, and the area should be considered dangerous."

"Second, reports note that several intruders have barricaded themselves in an archive on this floor. At the moment, these intruders haven’t done any damage to the archive’s contents, and I hope to keep it that way. Take things slow here and try to find a non-violent end to the matter, lest they risk damage to an important repository."

"You can do these tasks in any order you choose. Meet back here when you've dealt with both tasks. If you were able to defeat this bunch, you should be able to defeat the rest. Oh, before you go, I think you can use these."
