No idea if that helps ID the drag marks or not.

It's worth a shot. Maybe Survival or Perception? Constantine isn't going to make either of those but what the heck, there's a 20 on every die!

Anathiel will follow along, ready to deal with any creatures trapped down here with us.

@Anthiol: The tracks look like large worm like creatures, that could have possibly eaten their way out of the spider. Most likely Giant Maggots, or something similar.

@Arrius: you notice that the drag marks continue towards the northern passage with your survival, also thinking that they are the signs of Giant Maggots of some sort.

@Pakk: Aravashnial smiles at the mention of Urzu before raising his hand up towards Pakk, "I would have to say, you learned manners and a good heart from your mother, unlike some blithering noblemen. I would greatly appreciate the help. Perhaps, I can offer advice if anyone of your fellow folk have any questions." Stumbling a bit, the elf catches himself on Pakk's shoulders before steadying his balance. Fully upright yet keeping a hand on Pakk, Aravashnial stands a head above the half orc. Taking a deep breath, his ears seem to perk up a bit as his voice became more inspired, "It seems that there's at least some competent folk around as well. Let us get to the surface so someone can fix my eyes. Even though I cannot see, I will do my best to help for the kindness shown to me. Tell me, who needs a protective spell? I have a few I can still cast for the day."

Anevia speaks up then, using her makeshift crutch to hobble towards Aravashnial. "I can look after you, as long as those able can keep an eye out for any dangers. We won't be as fast, but it's better than staying here alone."

Maggots? How well are we equipped in terms of handling diseases? Filth Fever, possibly Demon plague will be a concern. I can sadly contribute only little to such endeavours.

"I have some rudimentary training in healing but I don't have a healer's kit or much in the way of magic. Nothing specifically for any kind of disease. But it would seem we aren't alone down here so we need to keep our eyes open and weapons at the ready."

Addressing Aravashnial, Constantine says, "Thank you for your offer and we may need your assistance. We don't know where we are or how to get to the surface but we'll do our best to get you and the others back. However we don't know what situation we will find ourselves, or Kenabres, in given...what happened...."

Well now that I'm far away from the battle, of course it begins!

Pakk is heartened to hear Aravashnial compliment him--and moreover his mother--even after the fairly obvious clue that he was a half-orc. With a hand on his shoulder and Anevia coming closer, the alchemist is ready to provide good physical support.
"I'm armored now, but if we get into any trouble--"

Maggots? Useful, but admittedly foul. If that...

The conversation about grappling with disease is suddenly cut short by the sound of buzzing. Pakk's eyes go where Arashvanial's ears do. From the corner of his eye, he sees Horgus start moving over, too.

Ah, so I'm not good enough to touch him, but he'll happily stand behind me while I face danger. Fine.

Pakk hefts scimitar and starts moving forward. "We have something flying towards us," he says low. "If you want to stay near me, I'll move slowly. If you want to stay further back, I'll move faster towards it and cut it down before it comes anywhere near you."

It would require a DC 10 Acrobatics check for Aravashnial to move greater than half speed (probably 15 ft), and I'm guessing that Anevia's land speed is also reduced. If either of them can still move this turn and want to stay with him, he will move no farther than they are able to move. If they would rather stay back, he will move 20 feet directly east (indicated with a green arrow on the map). In either case, he will ready an attack with his scimitar.

Sorry about that Arrius! I missed it on mobile.

Arrius' blade cuts through the cyan creature as it attempts to harry Askold, splitting the insect in two. Askold, noticing the yellowish insect flying towards the large boulder, moves up and strikes the insect with his blade, tearing through the wings and through the thorax.

"I don't know you well, but it seem you're the only one I can trust, not being like the others...."

Anevia: "Horgus, you are as foul as ever. It's no wonder you're not well liked. Come Aravashnial, stay with me, and we will get out of here. It seems that we have a competent group with us, aside from our rich worm, he speaks offering her shoulder as a guide for the blinded elf.

Aravashnial: "Thank you, and than the others. If I had my eyes, I would be more of a help than I am now. Hopefully we can leave soon, as I fear we aren't safe."

Combat is over!

There are three bisected young giant flies on the ground. From when the battle first started, Askold saw them come from the northern tunnel which has a slight incline.

Askold twists his Scizzore, then cuts it free to the side, evidently not wishing to get whatever that thing has for blood in his face by simply removing his weapon.
He then carefully cleans his Scizzore, making sure to remove tainted matter.

These things are almost certain to carry diseases, I recommend cleaning your weaponry of their viscera. The enemies were coming from the northern tunnel. They are also fairly weak, yet survived in that direction. What lurks in the southern one may well be stronger.

2000 gold? For the delivery of your person, intact, to the surface? I am hardly averse to moonlighting as a mercenary or bodyguard, I would however add that that the most effective way to keep you from harm is to keep adversaries away from you, and me between them and you, ideally closer to them then to you. Beerfiend speaks to Horgus.

Knowledge (planes), what's off about the flies: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

"We half breeds are the only things keeping you safe. They were flies, you odious, racist dretch." The choice of dretch, one of the lowest of demonkind, is a purposeful insult. He was insulting three aasimar, a dwarf, an elf, a half-orc, and another human, trying to set up divisions. If he wasn't careful, he would find himself left behind. Just wait until he finds out that the one "not being like the others" is friends with at least one of them.

As the more mobile of the group begins forming up into an exploration party, Pakk looks to Aneva and Aravashnial. "I'm sure that you'll be ample help," he says. "You seem a powerful mage to me. And Anevia, I don't know your skills, but I'm sure even with a broken leg you're of more use that--" he glances over towards Horgus, "--some people." He sighs. "Will you be able to hold here for a moment while we investigate ahead? Or do you want to stay along at the rear?"

Pakk joins the rearguard in either case and is happy to formally make Zeno's acquaintance. "A friend of Anathiel's is a friend of mine," he says platitudinously, reaching out his hand to shake Zeno's. Platitudes could go reasonably far in a situation like this. The urge to ask more about the ritual is strong, but Pakk resists. "I'm sorry you came back to Kenabres under such circumstances, but hopefully we'll manage."

I agree. We move into the northern passage.

Dretch? Greedy and vain, could become a Nal-something? The hell were those huge greedy pig demons called, s!#!, I filed them under "run away right now" so I dont remember anything? But individual soul strength seems to weak for that. Probably gets devoured as a Larvae. Or doesnt end up in the Abyss at all, Hell probably got a better claim on him.

Askold watches the exchange with some interest.

But maybe I should leave the judgement to Pharasma. What do I know. If I look at him, clearly a merchant, possible noble. A man of some means who has likely spent most of his life to earn more. Now, Demons happen, everyhing is on fire, and he clearly seems to be the weakest person in this cave, weaker then either of the cripples, or the others, surrounded by people who all clearly possess abilities he does not have. So what does he do? Yes, seek to assert his relevance, by offering what he has, cash, seeking to avail himself of rare resources, such as protection and safety, in return. Is he in that regard different from me? Look at me, I am Askold Beerfiend the occassionally useful, keep me alive!

Little of his inner monolouge will show, his thoughts being his own.

Alright beerfiend, less moping more scouting! His mind returns to the present.

Sorry about the lack of posts on my end. Impromptu layer visits and a 12 hour shift got me kerfluffled for the past few days!

@Pakk: These Flies seem to have been tainted by the abyss and show demonic traits. The carapaces seemed to be slightly thicker than usual, and it seems that they had incisors rather than the normal mouths of flies.

Askold and Arrius head the party further into the caverns, with Horgus, Anevia, and Aravashnial keeping to the rear at their slower speed. The group, as stealthy as they could, bashing heads and kicking rocks aside, make it to the smaller cavern chamber. Upon a quick inspection, there is a corpse of a giant maggot as well as the husks of three larvae close to what apperas to the the remains of an abandoned campsite. A kicked through fire ring and torn bedroll seemed to be well used, as if its inhabitant frequented the site regularly.

"Agreed, assuming we find whoever it is and the maggots didn't kill them. Speaking of introductions, we haven't even introduced ourselves to one another. Niceties are forgotten in dire situations like the one we all have found ourselves in. I am Arrius Voralius Constantine, Paladin of Iomedae, citizen of the Empire of Cheliax. And you are?"

Constantine offers his hand to each of the PCs and the NPCs.

Well met, I am Askold Magnusson, warnamed "Beerfiend", a Skald of Sarkoris. A bit of a hobbyist when it comes to alchemical things as well.
In contrast to other Skalds, my songs enchance your weapons rather then make your furious, a destinction those of you with magical abilities requiring concentration will appreciate.

He currently has his Scizzore on his right, and thus carefully chakes Arrius hand with his mildly less spikey spike gauntlet and spike shield wearing left.

Can I make any inference on the owners of the campsite?

Demon Lord of entropy? I think our insulting term for that one was "the ugly Qlippoth bait on someone elses crappy fishhook"

Anathiel looks at Askold, temporarily stunned by those words. He can't help but to begin trembling. His eyes roll back. He speaks in a flat whisper, as if coming from infinitely far away. "You haven't seen It. It stretches back forever in both time and space. It exists to devour everything and turn it into pure seething chaos.

He overcomes the trembling by clenching every muscle in his body. Forcing himself away from the void and back to the here and now by sheer willpower. His voice changes from a whisper to a growl of anger and pain. "That thing took part of my soul, so I would prefer that you not be flippant about an ABYSSAL POWER when you haven't stared down it's infinite maw."

Askold raises an eyebrow.
Qlippoths have yet to win a single war yet, on the totem pole of stuff they are like, mildly above us mortals

Peace Anathiel, but remember you speak with one whose homeland and family was taken by the Abyss. I know somethings about Demons, and the one thing nearly all of them cant stand its mockery. Anything a Demon cant stand I shall endeavour to do.

Constantine observes the troubling outburst from Anathiel; not the second one of his own will but the first, apparently uncontrolled and unbidden, proving the power of corruption exhibited by demons.

"Peace good Anathiel. From my limited interactions with Askold it appears the 'Beerfiend' wants to use humor to protect himself in difficult situations. He was not trying to insult you or whatever you are going through."

Anathiel likely notices the paladin's eyes narrow as if studying Anathiel for any other...manifestation...of demonic influence.

I got my name in a proper way, you see, bunch of Cultists raided us, I trolled them into drinking "Holy Sacred Beer" which was actually experimental alchemist fire, claiming that the burns the received where Cayden Cayleans wroth they were overcoming and then one of them casted firebelly and boom happened!

Did any of us Detect Magic in the initial room? For...reasons.

Moving ahead, Pakk looks at Anathiel and Zeno with a wince of concern at how this might sound before he quietly informs the group: "The flies were infused with abyssal energy that led to mutation unbecoming of their species. We should be wary. Anything else down here could be as well, for better or worse."

As introductions go round, Pakk sighs. He had tried to make that happen earlier in the cave where they first fell, but...agh, he shouldn't think too much of it. He shakes Constantine's hand and waits a moment to shake Askold's as well. They were the only two that he hadn't formally met yet, after all.

"Anthiol is being modest," he says as the dwarf introduces himself. "He's probably read every book in this city two or three times." Probably scribed a fair number of them, too.

And then poor Anathiel finds himself cornered in that mental space where Pakk had seen him often enough. He lets the exchange go--the man could take care of himself after all--but bites his lip throughout.

Askold wrote:
"Anything a Demon can't stand I shall endeavor to do."

"Then mock them to their faces," Pakk insists at the end. "Instead of retraumatizing their victims. We don't all cope the same way."

The half-orc sighs. No, don't give them more reason to think you cantankerous or frightening. Be gentler. You're smarter than this.

"Anyway, it'll be good to have another with knowledge of alchemy around." Even if he's unorthodox. "I'm Pakk Holstad: raised in Kenabres and trained at the University of Lepidstadt." He looks around at the others--most of them didn't really look like warriors. Pakk looked the part, what with his chainmail and longsword, but he doesn't feel like it. "I'm just a researcher, though. I'll do my best, though."

I should've compared with others before 'finalizing' Constantine's spell list; unfortunately he doesn't know Detect Magic. Hopefully someone else has it.

"Started out as "just a researcher" you mean. Perhaps the gods have marked you for something greater? Remember, just have faith in yourself and the gods."

Pakk purses his lips at Constantine's comment, trying not to let his face contort. "Mhmm," he offers.

He doesn't have much faith in either, but he certainly had more faith in himself than the gods. He doesn't want to just say that to a paladin, lest he become offended. He knew Anthiol was at least nominally religious, and that was just a topic that they avoided discussing overtly.
