Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

The crisis is here!

Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

You are all on a Starfinder vessel that is part of a fleet traveling through the Drift to an archaeological dig on Lubomram-4, a planet in a newly charted system in the Vast. The expedition is under the command of veteran agent and Forum member Bennock Gunstrel (art on Slide 4).

“Good morning, Starfinders!” expedition leader Bennock Gunstrel says from the viewscreen. His familiar smile is welcoming, and his graying hair is tied in its usual ponytail. “Here’s today’s update: Thanks to the vagaries of Drift travel to the vast, we’re running a little slower than our original projections. Still, we should reach our destination in the next week or so. I’m sure you know the mission documents front to back by now, but today’s a good day to review them one more time anyway. Also, I’m sending out team assignments as I speak. Please spend a little time this morning getting to know the agents you’ll be working with once we arrive; you’re going to be spending a lot of time together once we get planetside.”

“That’s all the announcements for today, Starfinders,” he concludes. “Have a great day, relax, and get yourselves ready for action. I, for one, can’t wait!”

Please introduce your PC and describe how you are spending your time traveling through the Drift! You can also make purchases from the quartermaster at this time.

**HOUSE GM ANNOUNCEMENT**

Alarms blare and warning lights flash as the ship makes a sudden, sickening lurch to one side. The artificial gravity cuts out just long enough to scatter unprepared Starfinders and their belongings into the air before slamming them down onto the deck. The swirling colors of the Drift have vanished from the viewports, replaced by the star-studded void of normal space. An unfamiliar planet looms, growing larger with each moment as the ship races toward impact!

Starfinders scramble to battle stations, rushing to regain control of the ship and assess the situation. “Captain!” one of the bridge officers shouts over the din, “We’re losing altitude quickly!”

“Engineering!” the captain calls into the intercom. “Get those thrusters online, now!”

“Working on it, Captain!” a voice crackles from the speaker. “Feedback from the Drift engine did a number on our systems. Axial controls should be coming back online now, but we’re still working to reboot the main thrusters!”

The whole ship rattles as it begins an uncontrolled descent into the atmosphere. “Pilot, use whatever power you have to flatten our descent!” the captain shouts. “We may not be able to prevent a landing, but with a little luck, we may be able to walk away from it!” Over the next few tense minutes, the flight crew work heroically to make the captain’s words prophetic. The ship quickly loses altitude, skipping hard off a hilltop before skidding to a violent stop through an alien forest.

Starfinders all over the ship pick themselves up and slowly make their way onto the surface of the unknown world. Communits reveal the rest of the fleet is in similar straits, landed on the planet or in the process of doing so under various degrees of control. Bennock Gunstrel calls everyone’s comm units. “Starfinders! If you can hear me, rendezvous at the coordinates I’m sending you. We have a lot of folks who need help and need all available agents immediately!”

Table GMs, please begin Part 1.

All right, Starfinders! You can choose which mission you would like to help with. Your choices are We're Going Down (Starship Repair), What's Out There? (Combat and Nature), Stuck and Sinking (Wilderness Rescue), or We're Not Alone (Exploration and Combat). I'll run the first mission to be proposed and seconded (though if anyone wants to propose a full order, that will keep things moving!) We'll track what you've done on Slide 5!

Well All'ock is bad with most skills, so she would probably want to do Stuck and Sinking or We're Not Alone.

Ryphorians are not entirely common in the Society, and Summer Ryphorians are even rarer, but never the less there is one here before you.

Wearing shinny armor in a Yoski style, and carrying a large rifle strapped to her back, All'ok seems to give off an impression that she is not quite paying full attention.

"Hello, I am All'ock Starsgift, cleric of Sarenrae. I am here to support your efforts and make sure we all survive the expedition."

Second Seekers (Ehu Hadif)

A muscular korasha lashunta with a purple solar mote and very elaborate scarf and tunic decorated with the religious symbol of Desna puts on a charming smile to each one of their new companions and reaches out telepathically to great them. They project a soft sensation of a light kiss on the hand in greeting.

"Good to meet you all, that's my name in mental speech but I've always felt 'Kiss' is a fine translation for it otherwise. So that's me, I'm Kiss the great champion of Lady Luck herself! My story of how I got here is rather long and complicated but it sounds like we don't have time for all that today, so just know I studied the cycle back in the Desnan church Scintillatrix on the Sun and well... I sort of got distracted, joined a dance group for a while and then found out about you Starfinders and all your travels before I could properly graduate. But that's okay! Lady Luck can wait, and in the meantime I can help out here and let you all know that if you need an extra bit of protection, stay behind me and I'll protect you."

As the ship starts shaking Kiss reaches up and pulls out a shield that folds out like a fan of cards made from sheer energy then hops in front of the rest of the group to block them from any stray and not strapped down equipment as they land.

Kiss is likewise pretty bad at skills but very good at punching things and meeting new people so I vote for "We're Not Alone"

Ratatat bows to all in the room and says, "Hello everyone. I'm a warrior pursuing studies in the philosophical art of war. At this point in my career, I'm most interested in the doctrine of shock and awe."

Ratatat pulls out a pulsecaster rifle in one hand and says, "Please meet my dear friend, Shock..."

Then he lifts up a massive yellow star plasma array in his other hand and says, "...and my other close friend, Awe!"

Ratatat manages to nimbly stay on his feet and tries to catch any breakables getting tossed around before they hit a hard surface and breaks!

With us being a bit more combat focused, I'll suggest the following order: We're Not Alone. What's Out There. We're Going Down (Hellih and Ratatat are both engineers). Stuck and Sinking.

THIS IS NOT THE RELAXING TRIP CAPTAIN GUNSTEL ANNOUNCED A large mechanical...minotaur says as they move onto the deck. Seeing several Starfinders looking askance at them (and some with vague expressions as if the figure is somehow familiar). They raise their hands and say. OH. DO NOT BE ALARMED. I AM NOT AN ACTUAL MINOTAUR. I AM MERELY A PROMOTIONAL DISPLAY FOR 'GAUNTLET OF GOLARION' THAT GAINED SENTIENCE. THERE IS NO NEED TO BE ALARMED.

The figure looks around at the panicked agents, injured crew, and flashing warning lights. NO REASON TO BE ALARMED OF ME. THE SITUATION AS A WHOLE IS FAR OUTSIDE OPTIMAL PARAMETERS.

PERHAPS IT WOULD BE BEST TO FIRST SECURE THE PERIMITER

Cygpo's good at tech skills (and life science), so they'd ideally jump to the starship repair. But looking at the rest of the party I think Ratatat's proposed order looks solid.

One of the agents is a medium-height android. His clothing is old and with signs of wear. He wears defrex hyde which is a common armor among Vesks, he lacks his left hand which is replaced by a massive arm too big for his stature finished with only four fingers. Whenever he has a bit of spare time, he cleans and disassembled his gun.

That was exactly what he was doing when the shitp has hit the fan. Most of the parts flew up and scattered across the hall as Hellih hit with his back on the ground

"Dear Triune that love their creations!" he rushed to collect parts and reassemble his rifle as they dived for the surface.

On the ground Hellih simply said "Hellih, I am gunsmith with small shop in Downlow. Did anyone know what have happened?"

I am fine with Ratatat order, Hellih has plenty of skills. For CHA he uses hireling as a AI module

Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

All right, We're Not Alone! I have put our active map on Slide 1! I will always do this so it's easy to find. After this encounter is done, I'll move it to the end.

Bennock calls to you as he emerges from a supply tent.

“I know it’s been a long day, Starfinders, but I’ve got a mission for you. One of our crews spotted a wrecked starship, crashed into the side of a hill a little bit north of here. As best as I can figure, it’s not one of ours. I’d like you to hike up there and explore the wreck. Try to find out whose ship it is. If there are other people on this rock, we definitely want to connect with them if we can. We don’t have time to go chasing any wild geese right now, though, so please head back here when you’re done. We can follow up on any leads you find once things have calmed down.”

You arrive at the site of the wrecked ship. You see a tunnel through the wreckage and obvious footprints lead out of it to the east. It would seem the crew got out safely.

You go through the tunnel and reach what is clearly a science lab. Samples of minerals and alien flora collected by the ship’s crew are scattered among the equipment. In the northwestern corner, a large canister has toppled, spilling a strange, iridescent liquid across much of the floor.

DC 24 Physical Science:
You determine the substance is a harmless mineral oil that could be used to craft an unusual pigment.

A broken computer terminal stands on a workbench along the eastern wall, its screen shattered and casing cracked.

DC 20 Computers:
You can extract the hard drive, which can be accessed by installing it into another computer (one is available at the base camp if none of you have one). The hard drive contains a log of everything the crew found in their explorations, including the name and location of the planet they explored in the Vast.

You realize there is low level radiation here, but as ong as you are all wearing armor, you are fine.

IF WE ARE SWEEPING THE SHIP, IT WOULD BE LOGICAL TO CONTINUE TO CHECK THE ENGINE ROOMS TO ENSURE NO CRITICAL DAMAGE THAT COULD CAUSE A DANGER. I BELIEVE THAT MAY LIKELY BE LOCATED THERE. the andorid points westward To 'B5' I think

Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

Yes, the hard drive would indicate that these were Weydanite clergy returning from a pilgrimage of exploration into the Vast.

You move westward. This large chamber was the ship’s cargo hold. It seems like the Weydanites gathered as much of the usable equipment and supplies as they could carry before departing. Most of what’s left was smashed and broken.

As you search, you find a few useful items: an advanced medkit, a fire extinguisher, a broad-spectrum scanning kit, and a case with four tier 2 stimulants.

Fort save this time using shirt because radiation absolutely sucks: 1d20 + 6 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 4 + 3 = 14

Well then! Guess we're getting radiated.

Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

Eddie tells everyone to focus on H while he inspires Kiss to feel better!

All'ok realizes that these are gremlins! The most powerful one is a Hobkins Gremlin Malefactor. They can cast spells and, as he is about to see, they can go out of phase against ranged attacks.

50% miss chance, low misses: 1d100 ⇒ 61

But All'ok hits despite the gremlin's best efforts!

Cygpo knows that the weaker gremlins are vaaigruks. They are immune to poison and have spell resistance.

caster level check for Cygpo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

But he overcomes the spell resistance!

Kiss steps forward and swings, taking out the hobkins gremlin. It can't dodge a shield to the face!

The radiation starts to take a toll, however.

Kiss is weakened on the poison track! The victim takes a –2 penalty to Fortitude saves, Constitution checks, and Constitution-based DCs.

The remaining gremlin tries to wreak as much havoc as possible! It catches All'ok, Cygpo, and Hellih in a cone of fire!

Apologies for using the wrong pronoun for All'ok there; I realized it just after the edit window.

Hellih fires on the remaining gremlin and takes it down!

We'll say its aura went down when it died, so All'ok, you're in the clear. Kiss, you luckily never hit Impaired, so you don't need to save against radiation sickness. I think you will have to sleep off the Weakened effects, though.

You don't find anything else of note in the room where the gremlins were.

Continuing on, you first find a lavatory! It is clean and well-maintained, other than one small cabinet that has toppled and spilled a variety of cleaning supplies across the floor.

Next, you find the crew quarters! They are full of toppled and broken furniture. Surviving drawers and chests lie open, as if someone hastily gathered their belongings before departing.

DC 20 Perception check:
You find a journal wedged under a broken bedframe. It details the author’s daily schedule of prayers to Weydan, notes and sketches from a recent journey into the Vast, and recollections of a series of mishaps that happened aboard the ship in the last few weeks before the crash.

You also spot the Engineering area. The door at the entryway to this chamber lies twisted off its track, torn off by the force of the crash. Inside, a few cracked monitors and flashing red lights warn of the many errors and nonfunctional systems in the crashed ship. A large, hemispherical protrusion in the floor that houses the ship’s power core is cracked, the edges of the opening partially melted by the heat within. Repairing the power core requires specialized equipment and a significant investment in time that is beyond your current means.

You have completed exploring the wreck! I will report the success and move you on to the next mission either late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Kiss looks leans against the wall, trying to keep up a cheery face, despite their clear wooziness. "Oh, I'll be alright. Nothing I can't muscle through. Just a little winded is all."

That said they do spend a good amount of time leaning against the walls of the structure and not a whole lot looking around.

I can't possibly succeed at a DC 20 Perception anyway so let's just assume they didn't feel up to trying.

What's Out There!

You return to camp and just have time for a ten-minute rest before Bennock finds you again.

“Some day, huh?” Bennock says with a light grin. “Listen, until we can figure out what’s going on and call for help, this place is going to be our new home. We don’t know anything about the area around us, though. I don’t know about you, but that makes me a little nervous. Do me a favor, head into the forest and do a wide lap around camp, see what we’re dealing with. Keep an eye out for anything useful, and watch out for any wildlife we should be concerned about. Oh, and take care of yourselves!”

The area around the Starfinder camp is dense and trackless forest. Thick underbrush and frequent elevation changes make for slow going, and it takes several hours to circumnavigate the camp.

DC 20 Survival check or DC 24 Perception check:

You notice tracks in the mud near a stream, indicating predatory creatures are nearby.
