Kaseem quickly steps up and slams his morningstar into the indentation left by Kalak's slam. What Kaseem hits feels... softer, mushier. The croc has been brained, and its body goes limp.
The party then looks to Caught, who still has stars in his eyes from the professor's color spray. He still blinks rapidly attempting to gain some semblance of coherence and deliberate thought (in vain). He cannot act

You've created a situation wherein he will be stunned for some moments longer and you may perhaps be able to achieve a non-lethal victory. For now, we're still in rounds.
Jilla is up to end round 1!

I didn't buy a sap for Kaseem since he isn't proficient, which is a shame because it should be a simple weapon.
Kaseem tries (poorly) to hide his surprise with excitement at his victorious swing on the voracious crocodilian foe!
"By the scales of Wadjet, I did it! Hah! Wait until my ungrateful brothers hear of this!"

Jilla rushes into the fray and leaps high enough to aim a punch right at the kitsune's nose!
Unarmed Attack (nonlethal): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

[dice=Unarmed Attack (nonlethal)]1d20+4
[dice=damage]1d4
"Who knew she could leap so high? Did you know she could leap so high?"

GM PaleDim |

Oww... oof? The kitsune absorbs the slight punch on the nose, but given his condition he can barely tell it apart from the experience of being blinded and stunned. He continues muttering incoherently and feeling around him for orientation.
That blasted fey riddler... I'll solve it... I'll show him...

You will technically be unimpeded for two more rounds after this, but let's continue going one-at-a-time while in case you discuss your plans in this round or another (e.g., discuss tying him up or something).

Kalak spins around, continuing his fury and drives the earthbreaker into the kitsune. Flood this place of knowledge!?! You will pay!
attack, rage, power attack, bless: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Damage, power attack, rage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 1) + 9 = 16
Seeing that caught is blinded and cannot react, Kalak drops his rage, Um, perhaps we should detain him instead? he asks, breathing hard...
Drop rage, fatigued....

![]() |

”Okay, stop hitting him for a second. Someone pull out a piece of rope and let’s bind him and resolve this without killing him,” Yulau calls out to the others.

![]() |

I'll wait for an update from the GM and see if there's anything left to heal or just scrape off the walls...

![]() |

"Oh, for crying out loud! Tie him up with this!" Professor Masaendri grabs her rope and marches it over to the group gathered around the fox.
Move action to "draw" the rope, then standard action to move.

Kalak's swing knocks Caught out cold! In fact it might have been a little too hard...
Out of combat!
You now have a dead kitsune body and the remaining two fragments of the scroll. You also have the name of the kitsune bard.
What do you do?

Scraping it is then!
"At least we didn't promise that bloated guppy to bring this fop in alive. We might as well check his remains, see if he 'helped' himself to anything else from the Overflow Archives before we hand over his corpse."
Kaseem will cast Guidance on himself before taking 10 on searching the kitsune's corpse for a Perception of 20.

GM PaleDim |

Kaseem picks over the kitsune's body and comes up with the following inventory:
tanglefoot bag
chain shirt
mwk buckler
rapier
mwk shortbow with 20 arrows
20 gp

Yulau casts Detect Magic and examines Caught’s gear. She identifies the spider climb potion and the catching cape for the group.

"We'll have to see if this equipment came from the Archives or if it was on him when he was imprisoned. Hopefully we get to keep it!"

Jilla looks a little embarassed. "Sorry Prof Double M! I know you would have liked to solve the riddle. But he was really asking for it! So . . . back to the big fish?"

"We can't make that bloated minnow wait forever; who knows what more damage it can do? For better or worse we take the corpse and deliver it. Oh and you're right; he was 'asking for it' and Kalak gave 'it' to him."

![]() |

Kalak slowly lifts the body of Caught, breathing hard from being winded, It was not my intention to kill the fox man, but this is the result he sought for himself. and leads the way toward the fish upstairs.

Lips pursed in a tight, thin line, Professor Masaendri bites her tongue on all the waspish things she is about to say as she stows her rope. Instead, with obvious effort to remain calm, she grits her teeth and casts Detect Magic on the items Yulau didn't identify.
Potion, spellcraft DC 16: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Arrows (2), pellcraft DC 20: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
After coldly informing the group that these are a potion of Cure Light Wounds and two Sleep arrows, she strides toward the stairs, huffing: "Fine! Hustle this corpse over to Mistress Koi post haste. Move along, everyone!"

GM PaleDim |

The body of the kitsune is no trouble for Kalak to hoist, and in fact for him is about the size of a sleeping child draped over his shoulder.
The party trudges back downstairs and through the main floor of the archives, finally ascending the stairs to the mezzanine where the party knows that the large koi resides.
When they reach the floor of the mezzanine the great fish turns, her eyes widen and her fishy mouth somehow expands wider. Clearly Mistress Koi is in shock.
The dreadful fox! He is supposed to be a prisoner in my charge and now he is dead? Did you at least bring the final scroll fragments? Did he have them?
She barely waits for an answer before spiraling into anxious prattling.
I had one job. ONE job and that blasted fox tricked me, and now this... Perhaps the riddler can revive the fox and continue his suffering and riddle-dueling. They have much power in the fey realm. Surely it is possible...
What do you do?

"Yes the dreadful fox had the last of the scroll fragments and he also had a crocodile which tried to eat us. If you're in trouble you could easily find a job in Osirion! There are many who would pay handsomely for you to make an oasis in the desert or some other water spectacle. Why I can practically see the gold coins now..."
Kaseem has a dreamy look on his face thinking of all the money he could make...

![]() |

It was a heated moment, and the battle-fury was on me. If you can bring him away with you and heal him, then I think we would accept that? he looks to the others for confirmation.

![]() |

Grimly, Professor Masaendri concurs. "Yes. Here are the remaining scraps of the scroll. I...apologize deeply for the fox's demise. One of our party suggested that his name is likely 'Caught'." Kalak: the person who killed him and spotted the scrolls we collected. Brilliance and foolishness all rolled into one.

GM PaleDim |

As soon as Molvil repeats the name...
A magical wind seizes the parchment scraps and stitches them back together. As an unseen chorus of voices murmurs Sylvan incantations, the words on the scroll form a vortex that draws the kitsune's body back into his inky prison.
Soon, the remainder of the fey creatures, the albatross and the owl, the remainder of the tooth fairies, all speed by you and follow the kitsune into the vortex.
Mistress Koi sighs heavily.
Yes very well. I suppose that's about everything that poured out. A promise is a promise. I can ensure the waters recede and that the damage done to the books is fully reversed. Stand back please...
You all step away and around the side of the fish and she quickly makes it so. A torrent of water rushes into her gaping fish mouth. This happens for what seems like minutes until the archives are once again dry. Indeed, all of the books and files you can see on nearby shelves appear dry as if none of this had ever happened.
That will be interesting to explain to Shaine...
Mistress Koi lazily turns towards the vortex to floats towards it. After her form disappears into the murky blackness, the vortex fades from view. Finally, the script settles back to its original form, and the scroll drops to the floor, its magic dormant once more.
With the sudden surreal experience of having no evidence of any of your recent experiences, you trudge back to the lobby to hand Shaine the scroll.
With that the scenario is complete! Thanks for playing! I will prepare your chronicles and report the game tomorrow evening.

![]() |

"Ah so much for getting the Koi to work for me in Osirion... At least we won't get stuck with cleanup duties down here! Let's report back to Shaine and see what kind of punishment he will unleash on Virmyl."
Thanks PaleDim for running and thanks to all of the players!

"I don't understand what just happened," declares Jilla. "But I think we won!"

![]() |

Sighing, the Professor concurs. "Yes. We won. Though it may have been better if we'd kept the fox alive. Mistress Koi could have been a valuable ally in the Fey realm, but I fear she may think of all of us as dreadfully ruthless now." She turns toward the stairs, suddenly weary to her bones. "Come, it is late. Mr. Shaine will likely have questions, and I would like to see my pillow before the sun rises."

"I don't understand what just happened," declares Jilla. "But I think we won!"
This happened:
"DC 15 Knowledge (arcana or planes) wrote:It seems the scroll represents an extradimensional prison. It's likely the real Virml inadvertently released the contents of this prison in his hapless meddling. Uniting the six fragments and speaking the kitsune’s name aloud can return him to his confinement.
Pulling back the curtain slightly: Mistress Koi was something of a prison guard for Caught. The entire thing started (of which there are few clues in the scenario proper) because of the fey riddler that Caught dueled with (and he lost). Otherwise this a little romp to clean up the Fey mess and notice his name encoded into the riddle on the scroll. The riddle itself is quite nonsensical and a very round-about way to reference him.
