Ahh. How could I forget. Paladin code.

Humble pulls his feather out o his sleeve to enchant everyone with nonlethal abilities, and waits to see if Tino's Toughest do likewise.

He will step back behind Kyrie and Kioko.

"You compliment us, Kyrie Breakspear," Tino says with a grin.

Ingdani breaks off from conversing with the guide assigned to Tino's Toughest. She interrupts, "While the qualifier does not begin until tomorrow at dawn, it is not permitted to grievously harm any of the other competitors."

Tino bows to the Tian-Sing woman. "Of course! This will just be a friendly match. We have no intention of anyone being injured."

Ingdani and the other guide nod to Tino and resume their conversation.

Given the approval of the guides, Yabin looks at you with his lidless eyes and slowly cracks his knuckles. Ji-yook dusts off her claws. Takatorra checks his gale blades.

"Since you have indulged our request," Tino says, "you may choose the location of your match. Would you prefer the beach, the jungle, a riverbank, or the mountains?"

Rakka looks at his staff, and at the quiver of arrows at his hip. He shrugs, and says "I am most comfortable in the jungle, but then this tournament is not about being comfortable. I will defer to my teammates."

"Fortunately, the jungle is right over there," Tino says with a gesture toward the edge of the beach where the jungle begins. "Let's go!"

Ingdani and the other guide separate as you begin to move toward the jungle, taking their places next to their teams.

Ji-yook looks away from a soaring shore bird she was watching. "Oh. We're moving."

The two teams move into the shade of the jungle. It is simultaneously cooler due to the shade and hotter due to the humidity trapped under the canopy. The teams walk further and further apart until by unspoken agreement, everyone stops and faces one another. "This seems like a good spot!" Tino calls over.

You take the time to ready what weapons you choose and get into formation. The two guides move out of the way but close enough to keep an eye on both of you. Tino and Takatorra both bow toward you. Once you have returned a gesture of respect, the fight is on!

Humble takes a moment to observe.

Yabin makes arcane gestures and chants. Raising his open palm skyward, a ring of fire blazes to life around Summary Judgement. Concealed from the other team, the nagaji moves to the west.

Rakka moves behind the tree and takes cover, which garners a squinty gaze from Ji-yook.

Yabin strides forward to stand beside Takatorra, where he draws an arcane sigil in the air and speaks a sibilant phrase before touching the one-eyed tengu. The crimson armored warrior calls out to Ji-yook before he becomes blurry and indistinct, "Did you really think that would work on her? Let me show you!"

Ji-yook glances at the tengu and shrugs.

The ghostly Takatorra advances upon Kyrie and begins to leap and spin as strikes from his gale blade come at the champion from all directions. Her stance keeps her shield well placed, but one strike slips past her defenses. She is able to reposition herself just in time and the shield absorbs the blow. Kyrie gets the sense that as impressive as the maneuver was, the tengu was holding back.

Ji-yook snorts in companionly amusement at the tengu's failure.

However, at that same moment, Tino reaches out a hand, imploring, "Irori!" The ranger finds a supernatural resistance against her wakizashi. The magic concealing Takatorra prevents Kioko from seeing the look of appreciation they give her.

Ji-yook sprints in closer and throws another rune engraved dart at Kyrie's foot. This time it punches through her armored boot, pinning her foot to the ground. The kitsune continues running on toward Humble.

Takatorra looks to Tino. The Irorian nods. He sprints around the Iomedean with her foot stapled to the ground, past the dueling tengu, and around Humble as fast as a breeze. He unleashes a rapid series of blows against the Abadaran. An open palm slams into his sternum, taking his breath away for a moment. Ji-yook darts toward Rakka. She places both palms together. Her tails crackle with blue fire that jumps off of her tail to coalesce in a ball of blue energy in front of her palms. Ji-yook drives her palms and the blue energy at Rakka's chest, but he's far too fast and easily leaps out of the way. The ball of energy flies past him and strikes harmlessly on the ground.

Rakka ducks out of the way of Ji-yook's fiery punch, responding in kind with a quick combination of his own. First, a glowing maw seems to leap out from the top of his staff, biting down on Ji-yook. He follows that up with a quick punch, his fist once again shrouded in an ethereal claw.

Ji-yook immediately regrets being so close to Rakka. The magical fangs and claws leave the kitsune's strength sapped. Though Takatorra and Yabin do not look winded in the least and Ji-yook still has fire in her eyes, Yabin relaxes his stance and Takatorra sheaths his blades.

"We yield," Takatorra says.

You have time to chat with the other three while you wait for Tino to wake. Once he does, he rubs his head and groans. However, the next thing he does is give you a grin and congratulate you. "Well done!" he says, rising to his feet with Takatorra's assistance.

He then lays a hand upon Ji-yook, and she stands straighter and stronger.

"Thanks. But I was fine," she says with an even voice.

Looking to you, Tino says, "Thank you for the enjoyable match!" He does not appear to resent his thorough beating in the slightest. "Here. A reward for being such good sports and indulging us." He removes a bone wand with a carved skull at one end and offers it to Humble. "Death ward. A wand of death ward, that is."

"Well, we won't go so easy on you next time," Tino laughs. He fishes two rune stones out of his pouch. "Take these. I've heard this island is covered in undead. I'd hate for ghosts to get the better of you before we have a chance to fight again in the tournament," he says with a wink.

In order to be able to use these, we'll need to bend the rules. Change transferring a rune from a runestone to a 10-minute Exploration activity.

While you sit and tend to each other's wounds, you have time to chat with Tino's Toughest. Yabin, the nagaji, remains quiet and enigmatic. Ji-yook feigns disinterest until there's a chance to make a clever quip. Tino and Takatorra, however, are quite friendly and willing to talk your ears off.

You learn that Tino grew up in a small village in Quain. His older brother was killed trying to stop local ruffians from stealing from the family shop when Tino was ten years old. After a long, blue period, his parents convinced him to join the local fighting school where his older brother had trained. It was not a smooth transition, but the patience and wisdom of his teacher brought the young Tino around. Ultimately a fire was lit within the young man to master one hundred and one fighting styles from across Golarion, so he left home to expand his knowledge.

He soon reached Quain's Dragon Temple where he learned the teaching of Irori and, more importantly, befriended Takatorra. He invited Takatorra to join him on his quest. Together they encountered a greedy highway bandit one day who tried to swipe Tino's purse. Tino and this ninja traded blow for a long time.

"I sat on a log watching and eating biscuits," Takatorra says. "I was instrumental."

Ji-yook blows air through her lips. "Yes, yes. Let me spoil the surprise. The ninja was me."

Ji-yook and her partner in crime, Yabin the Just, were not terribly nefarious highway bandits, and Tino invited them to give up their criminal lifestyle and join him in his quest for enlightenment. They have traveled across Tian Xia together for many, many years now and met many new friends and learned many things. Hao Jin's invitation to the Ruby Phoenix Tournament was a chance to learn techniques from beyond Tian Xia's shores.

Less than an hour later, everyone is hale and whole thanks to the divine blessings of Abadar and Irori. "You and we should each be on our way," Tino says with a smile. "Thank you again for indulging me. I am certain we will meet again."

Humble's golden eyes glitter as he pays intense attention to the stories; he believes in the power of silence, and is a little cagey about diclosing information. After all, a careless word might lead to loss of leverage (further: he's used to Kyrie talking about the Knights of Lastwall as part of her endless recruitment efforts; he might even watch with dismay as she gives them some shield-fighting pointers).

He nods to Tino. I do not doubt it. Until then, may your ventures be profitable.

With Abadar's divine guidance, you swiftly make your way along a narrow jungle path and emerge in a small clearing at the base of a tree covered hill by midmorning. A path winds up the hill toward a relatively large structure hidden within the vegetation. Narrow pillars line the both sides of the path.

"Here is the Temple of Irori," Ingdani says. "This structure is one of few that were built during the Tian-Sing occupation millennia after the Taumatan empire disappeared. You must search the ruins for your phoenix necklace and at least one of your three silver feathers in order to compete in the qualifier tomorrow morning. You will probably want to secure a safe place to rest during the nights as well." She adds the last with a wry chuckle.

Ascending the path, you see that the stone pillars are carved with representations of the Master's Rebus. The simple dirt path leads to a large pair of wooden doors bearing numerous intricate carvings. Two statues, each of an androgynous human, stand to either side of the doors, though the southern statue has been knocked over and now lies in pieces in the grass. Large webs cover the temple door and the exterior walls to the northwest and southwest. Something massive writhes in the thick webs that cover the northwest wall.

Let me know how you want to approach the temple--investigate the writhing mass, head straight for the front door, scout around the temple, sneak through the webs, etc.--and/or update your exploration activity in the blank next to initiative on your macro page.

Rakka holds his staff up in front of him, gripping it with one hand at the center. He draws an arrow from his quiver with his other hand, holding it up to the center of the staff, then draws it back as if he were pulling a bowstring. As he does, the staff flexes and bends, the wood becoming thinner, more flexible, as a bowstring becomes visible in his draw hand, the arrow nocked and ready to fire! The transformation of his weapon complete, he nods to Kioko and moves stealthily into the long grass.

Changing exploration mode to Avoid Notice. I vote for scouting around the outside first.

Never ceases to amase. Humble doesn't bother hiding his amazement at seeing Rakka's staff change.

He also votes to survey. What is that wriggling thing? Perhaps if we free them they will feel indebted to us, and offer us a bounty for our efforts.

| Extinction | url= |

You break off of the path a sling's toss from the main door in order to sneak through the jungle and survey the perimeter. The first thing that you realize is that the entrapped creature is unlikely to provide a pecuniary reward for releasing it. Kyrie recognizes it as a crag linnorm, which is a type of dragon barely more intelligent than an animal whose death bears a fiery curse. Humble, however, believes it is a triceratops, a huge lizard of animal intelligence from the forgotten past capable of trampling ogres under its feet.

On the north side of the front portion of the temple are two sets of stairs that lead up to a wooden door. A little further on you see a well. Near the back of the complex on the north side is a wide hole caused by a collapse of the stones long ago. Through the hole, you can glimpse the form of a humanoid sitting cross-legged on a platform with several prayer instruments arrayed before them.

Moving around to the south, you find several statues surrounding a beaten patch of dirt. Most resemble animals, but two depict androgynous humanoids.

Finally, on the south face of the west part of the ruin is another pair of stone steps leading to a wooden door.

Now that you have scouted the perimeter, it is time to choose a path inside.
