Welcome! This is a PSF game based on a module. So completing the first chapter (of 3) will be about the same as completing 3 modules.

I'd like to suggest that everyone post using past tense. I think it reads better on review. I'm okay, however, with present tense if people prefer it. It does take a little discipline to double check the post before submitting it to make sure it is in the past tense.

I like to make saves and some skill checks under spoilers to speed things along, so let me know if that is okay. It does mean you should have your character sheet detailed in your profile with all character features found on the standard Pathfinder stat block. It helps me find things quickly when a stat block follows the standard Paizo format. It also helps to have special class features, feats, and traits either linked to an SRD or the texts for these included in the character sheet somewhere.

No one needs to make major changes to the stat page, but I can tell you that it can take a lot of time when a GM has to scan a profile page for a minute to find out where the skill bonuses are listed or when the GM has to spend a few minutes running a special class feature through an SRD search engine.

I can post a link to a text document that is preformatted to make it all in the standard format, if that would help.

The first post in the gameplay thread gives you the set-up as to why a team of Pathfinders would be at the location where the adventure starts.

I like to make any dice rolls under spoilers to keep the post focused on the descriptions of the action. Spoilers labeled "On the Table" mean that any player can look at the spoiler to see what the rolls were. Spoilers labeled "Behind the Screen" have rolls that players should not look at until the encounter is over. These are rolls that would give away information that characters would not know.

When you post your rolls, it helps if you give the roll as it would be without any modifiers, and then list whatever adds to or subtracts from the result. For example, if you are making a melee attack with a longsword, you are getting a flanking bonus, and your character is shaken, write {dice=Longsword, flanking, shaken}1d20 + 5 + 2 - 2{/dice}, where the normal attack bonus for a longsword is the number given on your combat stats section, such as longsword +5 (1d8+3). This lets me know what was factored in so I don't have to ask if you included the penalty for shaken or the bonus for flanking. Same goes for damage rolls, skill checks, saves, etc.

For melee attacks, it helps if you put the damage roll on the next line after the attack roll. When both are on the same line it can be harder to spot the attack roll result and if it is a hit.

I'll look over characters soon, but if they are legal PFS characters, they should be fine.

Play what you'll enjoy playing. I will tell everyone that there is a major element of undead in the plot, so it may help to have a divine spell caster somewhere in the party.

This is the first time I've been a GM for a PFS game. I just downloaded the most recent version of the guild guide. I believe players must list boons that they may be applying to their character, so let me know anything I need to know. If there is something you need to know from me, I'll get the information. Tips from those more experienced are gladly accepted.

Some things you may want/need to know about Davarn, the settlement where the adventure starts:

Davarn: LN large town, population 2000.

So this is below the 5000 required to be able to make purchases or procure spellcasting services (per the PFS Guild Guide).

So make any purchases you want for your character at the start of the game. All PC's came from Absalom and passed through large cities getting to the settlement, so you would have had opportunities to purchase PFS society legal items before getting to Davarn.

Non-magic items should be available and the community block in the module background information on the settlement lists spellcasting services available up to 5th level.

Other things about the town will be revealed in the game as needed.

And the Wizard I just don't feel like playing since we have an arcane caster. Unless others feel we need him.

Hi everyone, checking in (thanks to Noral for the invite!) - sorry to be late - I've been on vacation and wasn't checking the boards.

Gronkh - Cavalier 4 (doesn't seem like a good fit for a Darklands focussed adventure since he spends all his time riding an axebeak)

I just read something that alters what I gave earlier.

For the duration of the festival, Davarn functions as a small city rather than a large town. This increases its Base Value and Purchase Limit to 5,600 gp and 37,500 gp respectively. This doesn't change the other rules regarding purchases, but it lifts the restriction on magic items, so long as they are under the base value and allowed by the Pathfinder Society Guild Guide.

See the section on Always Available Items in Chapter 4.

The weapons are made of wood and are not MWK or magic. So a practice greataxe would not get the +1 magic or MWK bonus nor would it be made of cold iron.

Signal when you're ready to play out the spring muddle competition. It will be conducted in the manner of a melee, although with different goals. We will roll initiative and then proceed in order. Each PC and NPC will move around the course, try to grab flags, and/or try to impede the other team with magic or physical actions that don't cause lethal harm or otherwise violate the rules of magic use.

It might be wise to review the rules on swimming, climbing, and acrobatics. Combat maneuvers like grapple, bull rush, steal, dirty trick, disarm, reposition, and trip.

In some combat situations, it is common to allow all players to post in any order and then have the GM do run the NPCs. In this situation, tactics will be important, so I'll evaluate outcomes in strict initiative order. You are free to delay to allow another PC to act ahead of you or ready an action to insure your action goes off after another PC action. This will alter the initiative order in future rounds.

If you have limited opportunity to post, feel free to post before your turn has come up, but put the key activities under a spoiler. I'll copy and paste the spoilered information so people won't have to backtrack to follow the flow of action.

Have fun with this. Nothing critical hinges on winning, but there are a couple of prizes awarded. The winning prize is naturally better than the runner up, but both are a nice pair of items. How the PCs play the game (fair or foul) will affect how the residents of the town react to the PCs for the following week.

I've updated the map with text explaining the skill checks needed to move through each obstacle area and the location and skill checks needed to obtain each flag.

I've added numbers in red on a white background to indicate the elevation above the water level.

You might want to read these and plan how you intend to navigate each section.

Since this is a game for PFS credit, I don't see any provision for awarding the prizes for completing the competition on the Chronicle sheet. The prizes are not listed in the magic items for purchase section. So if you win the prize, you can divvy the items up for use during the adventure, but if you want to have the item for future games, you'll need to purchase it assuming you have the necessary prestige and gp.

With that in mind, you may not want to invest in magic items to help you in the competition, but if you do, consider the following:
Potion of Monkey Fish, SL 1, CL 1 50 gp or Scroll SL 1 CL 1 25 gp
Elixir of Swimming 250
Elixir of Agility 450 gp
Elixir of Tumbling 250 gp

PCs and NPCs can cast spells prior to the start, but they must be cast from the starting line during the 6 rounds just before the event begins. A check will be made to be sure no spells have been cast on any contestant prior to the start. This gives contestants a chance to make Spellcraft checks to recognize the spells being cast and also limits others from aiding the contestants with spells. The event inspires a lot of betting, so this rule was established after some groups attempted to help one team by paying for spell casting to give contestants an unfair advantage.

Welcome GM Abraham and Vinnie! So we have five, which is probably where we should close recruitment.

I need to tweak the competitors to add one more so there are equal numbers on both teams. I'll set the scene for the competition and describe the opponents.

Still need a post from Trevor, Sadaf, and Gru'gar. Comapnion/familiars will act on the initiative of the main PC.

I use the Paizo Chrome add-on that allows me to replace the character avatar image with one of my own choosing. I mainly use it to when the avatars available don't do justice to what I imagine the character looks like, particularly when uncommon races are used.

I've done that with Vinnie, since the image of a chimp distracts me from what the Vanara look like. I've posted the image on the map just to the lower left where the competitors are placed. Use it on the map if you like, although it's okay to use the chimp image if you and the others prefer.

If anyone else has a preferred avatar image, you can post it on the map and I'll use it when I work on posts.

I'm looking forward to getting started. This week, I'll have limited time to post on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These situations with lots of NPCs often take me a while to work up, so if I just have a short amount of time, I usually don't attempt anything involved.

Sadef: I notice that most of Sadef's prepared spells cause damage and so are not legal in the competition. Are those the spells you want Sadef to have prepared for the competition? I'd recommend reviewing the druid spells for more useful spells, unless he does not plan to cast spells during the competition. If you do revise your list, state any spells buffs you are casting before the race begins.

Everyone: I'll have a post up soon. I'm reviewing all the NPCs for their buffs and prepared spells, etc. I rolled initiative for the NPCs earlier but I will have to alter those for some of the to account for some spell buffs like Cat's Grace which will adjust the results.

One last thing, please be sure your header information has updated values that take into account your buff's and so on. Should have AC and saves, plus anything else you care to specify. Just for this encounter, it might be good to list your skill bonuses for acrobatics, climb, swim, and any other skills you expect to use, as well as your speed. If you have a swim and/or climb speed, please list that in the header as well. If I have to 'bot anyone, I'll have the current values.
