That's an examination and an Arcana check or a divination magic spell to find out.

"I can detect for magic, but it takes a few minutes. As we're not in a hurry..."

If the group agrees to wait a bit, he'll cast detect magic (ritual, 10minutes). He'll also check the other gear they've accumulated.

If not, he'll gather the items just in case and check them later.

Either way, "Where to next? I think we've swept the upstairs. Did we miss anything on the first floor?"

Back to the basement? Or are there other outbuildings?

Jekka said that the smugglers used lights in the attic to signal incoming ships. Not really sure how they get up there, considering the stairs, but I think it's worth checking out. I can get up there. If someone can lend me some rope, I can tie it off and lower it down.

Baghotir, do your ritual. We can spare the time, I think. While you do that, I'll poke around in the wardrobe a bit.

Alisanne pulls out her dagger and uses it to lift the cloak and boots out of the wardrobe for Baghotir to examine. She'll then use the dagger to poke around in the wardrobe, seeing if anything comes loose or she can hear any hollow spaces behind or below the wood.

Before we get to your investigation...

Alisanne uses the dagger to carefully lift the cloak. She brings it around and sees that the inside of the cloak is lined with a dull yellow fungus or mold of some kind.

Intelligence (Nature) will identify it.

Alisanne returns to the hall and approaches the next room to the west, checking to make sure the door is safe before entering.

Moving West... The door is unlocked and appears safe. Opening the door...

Rubbish is scattered around what was once a fine guest bedroom; there is evidence of rodent infestation, and webs hang in the corners. A four-poster bed stands against the wall opposite the fireplace. Its woodwork is worm-ridden, and the curtains that once screened the bed are torn and stained. There is no bed linen, but the bed is mostly intact.

Baghotir looks around a little, pokes at some rubbish with his battle axe, and shrugs. He expects most of these chambers are abandoned. Frankly, he's a little surprised it's as active as it is!

He'll move on to the next room to investigate when the others are ready.

"Careful Baghotir, that floor could be rotting from the rubbish." Caelius treads carefully as he is afraid he is going to go through the floor again. He helps poke around as he follow the dwarf in exploring the next room.

Investigate, but there's nothing here. You can move on.

There are two more rooms on this level that haven't been explored, and there is the attic, though how would you get up there?

Baghotir will head to the next room after this one has been searched. He's still checking the floor as he goes with his axe so he's moving fairly slowly.

Let's wait for Belwick to finish his thing before we go exploring any more. If we can't find another way into the attic, I can get myself up there. If Caelius will lend me his rope, I can tie it off and lower it down for the rest of you.

Belwick follows Baghotir, more curious than anything. Deciding that words of inspiration are due from the group's leader, he says, "You're all doing great so far. Keep it up."

The door appears safe--No sign of tripwires, traps, or alarms. The structure appears sound. The door is unlocked.

I have put folk in a reasonable position on the map. If you disagree, now is your chance to amend.

The Party opens the door?

This bedroom has no furniture, but rubbish is scattered everywhere, and webs cover the walls and ceiling. From the doorway, you can see a glint of light in the fireplace from a small, highly reflective object.

"Proceed in with care, my friends. We've seen enough collapsing floors to last us a lifetime I think. But there's clearly something in the fireplace that bears investigating. Let's see to it."

Baghotir's instincts serve. The party will not be surprised by the swarms of spiders that descend with the muffled clambering of thousands of tiny legs!

Venn steps clean into the doorway, hoping to distract the swarm by offering himself up. He doesn't take it passively though as he tries to sweep his greatsword through the mass:

At that moment, Ned springs into action. He moves through the door, grabbing the torch on the way.

Thank you, Sir! Spider Flambe coming right up!

He tumbles through the spiders and dodges every single of of them as he passes through the swarm and into the room. Cunning Action-Disengage

On the other side, he flourishes the torch and attacks the swarm with it. Torches do 1 Point of Flame Damage Torch Melee Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3[/ooc] The attack misses, unfortunately.

The spiders at the door move away from the fire and towards Venn... spider swarm attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 but the spiders do not manage to score a hit. This movement draws an opportunity attack from Ned... Torch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10, which misses.

The spiders closest to Baghotir however... Spider Swarm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 swarm over him and cannot find their way through the plates and mail to find the chewy dwarf center. Miss.

Belwick is up!

Suspecting that fire magic will serve the group best, Belwick works through the arcane gestures and magical syllables to create and fire a bolt of flame! It flies out towards the nearest swarm.

Standing firm, Venn takes a wide arc, trying to disperse the swarm as quickly as he can:

Venn, covered in spiders, hacks with his blade and sweeps away large swaths of spiders.

Swarm is reduced in sized and does reduced damage. Well done. Venn is still threatened.

"Thank you Alisanne!" Baghotir thanks her for the blessing.

For now though, he disengages from the swarm, not wanting to suffer its effects until he has to. He falls back into the room (3 squares south), axe at the ready if it advances on him once more.

Spiders can't hear. But... Man, I don't want you to throw away an action. Sure. 2 Points of damage.

The sound waves from Alisanne pass through the air and are sensed by the tiny hairs on hundreds of thousands of tiny legs.

Ned moves to the swarm on Venn and tries to burn it.

Torch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23, and... Fire Damage: 1 + 4d6 ⇒ 1 + (2, 1, 2, 6) = 12 burns the rest of the spiders off of Venn. He continues then moves and dashes down to stand beside Baghotir.

The spiders are drawn by vibrations and move south to consume Baghotir...

Spiders!: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 but can't get through the armor.

Baghotir gets a reaction to attack the spider swarm.

Belwick is up.
