Dungeon Master Tony |

The crossbowmen draw curved blades, cutlases, made for quick strikes and pair off against Venn.
Young Man:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16, hit for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
That's it, Kid! Just like I taught ya!
Older Man:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 MISS.
Baghotir is up, followed by the Lady Archer and then Venn.

Baghotir Nightthane |

Baghotir takes an arrow to the spleen (Do I need that?) and growls as he closes with the shooter.
He turns to Caelius as he arrives, "Bah! I got this!" as blood oozes from his belly wound around the arrow shaft.
He swings his glowing warhammer, and swings hard, on the woman leader in the corner.
Warhammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 damage (b): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
If she doesn't drop, he prays to Clangeddin for another shot (gain attack as a bonus action) and he'll amplify the attack with inspiration to ensure she goes down before we do!
Warhammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 or Warhammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
damage (b): 1d8 + 4 + 1d8 ⇒ (8) + 4 + (1) = 13 (crit)
Then he'll use his move to move along the bunks 25' east.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Still reeling from Alisanne's psychic assault, she is unprepared for Baghotir to soundly ring her bell with his warhammer, rattling her skull inside her basket helm. She drops to the ground, unconscious.
The two men facing off against Venn exclaim PROCAN'S BALLS!!! in unison and turn to look at each other, agape.
Oh Crap, again in comical unison.
Venn, would you care to offer a response and finish out the round?

Venn Greenbough |

Procan won't save you. Make your peace." Venn swings his greatsword
ATK: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 but catches it on the back of one of the chairs!

Baron Belwick Donnamoor |

Belwick gets back to his feet and shifts slightly. He once again weaves a spell that conjures a ball of flame, which he points at one of the crossbowmen and fires!
Fire Bolt vs Northern Crossbowman: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage (Fire): 1d10 ⇒ 6

Dungeon Master Tony |

The concern of the two men is punctuated by the spellcaster standing back up and hurling magical fire at them. Hit!

Alisanne Skullfist |

Hey, she knows who I am! Alisanne beams. She turns to the two crossbowmen. If only you two sad sacks were as well-informed, you'd realize how sorely outmatched you are.
Vicious Mockery, DC 14 Will: 1d4 ⇒ 3 damage on the older man and disadvantage on his next attack.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Wisdom Save Old Crossbowman:1d20 ⇒ 10
The old man is clearly shook by the spell. After sharing another look, the younger man opens the wall as if it were a door! The pair both disengage and flee out the door to the north.

Venn Greenbough |

"Get the f+~* back here!"

Baghotir Nightthane |

Baghotir watches the men run away and is having none of it. He moves further, and when that is not enough, he Dashes. (double 25' moves).
- - -
He swings to knock the man out if his damage is sufficient.
- - -

Venn Greenbough |

Venn doesn't let up on the pressure, pursuing the enemy:
ATK: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Bloody hell!

Dungeon Master Tony |

I think I almost hear yackity sax in the background. Insert 3 stooges noises where you think it's appropriate as these two chuckleheads...
I THINK IT'S GREENBOUGH!
THE GUY WHO KILLED...!
RUN!
Belwick is up. Then Caelius. Then Alisanne.

Baron Belwick Donnamoor |

"We're giving chase? So be it!" Belwick rushes to keep up with Venn and Baghotir.
Move, Dash

Alisanne Skullfist |

Alisanne chases after the others into the next room.

Dungeon Master Tony |

The two men both disengage and run up the stairs. As the first man gets to the top, hideous piercing screams--as if from condemned souls-- rattle the rafters and shake the entire house.
Everyone needs to make a DC 12 Wisdom Saving throw or be Frightened. Just like in the west wing of the house.

Venn Greenbough |

Wisdom Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 "Boccob's B&$%+~#*!" Venn winces at the cream, but isn't fazed.
He holds up, unwilling to charge upstairs into an ambush.
What I do with my turn is dependent on the second man, the one NOT at the top.

Venn Greenbough |

Mostly asking if I can reach and attack the second one or if I'd be rushing into the unknown.

Dungeon Master Tony |

For clarity, both men took the disengage option and are on the floor above you. If you wish to pursue, you'll be going up the stairs, presumably to the stairs you found near the kitchen.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Mostly asking if I can reach and attack the second one or if I'd be rushing into the unknown.
You can reach!

Alisanne Skullfist |

Will Save, DC 12: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
What was that?!

Baghotir Nightthane |

Baghotir reacts to the screetching!
Wisdom: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 vs DC 12 or frightened
The cry rattles the dwarf a little, but does not deter him from his act.
He can't keep up with his stubby legs, but he will move (25' closer) and cast Sacred Flame against the old guy.
Sacred Flame (Dex 14) damage (r): 1d8 ⇒ 6
"No stop all this running, or I'll hit you with far worse - and you may not live through it!"
Persuasion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 (if applicable)
- - -

Dungeon Master Tony |

BOT for Venn with approval via Slack:
Venn chases the two men up the stairs, cursing to obscure deities, and he attacks the older brigand with his greatsword, as he emerges in the scullery upstairs.
Greatsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, Slashing Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10
The man falls to the ground at the top of the stairs, groaning. His last act before he loses consciousness is to look at the younger man and say, Run, Kid.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Sorry, Baghotir. I am re-directing your attack to the younger man.
Baghotir also climbs the stairs and calls down silver fire from Clangeddin...
Dexterity Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 and he somehow dodges!

Alisanne Skullfist |

Alisanne rushes to the bottom of the stairs, drawing her dagger on the way. Seeing the fleeing pirate at the top, she flings the dagger at his retreating form.
Dagger: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Baron Belwick Donnamoor |

Wisdom save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Belwick stops when the frightful noise comes out. "Heironeous help me! What was that!"
He backs away, calling for his servant to come forward.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Alisanne's dagger scores a hit and the last opponent falls. Killed or unconscious? Tell me or you can post and narrate it if you like.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Light from the upper floor spills down the stairs, and torchlight from the barracks you just left flickers through the secret door to the south.
Shoulder-height wooden bottle racks line the north and west walls here. There appear to be no intact bottles left in the racks and shattered bottles cover the floor.
Against the east wall, at the foot of the stairs, rest two large metal storage bins that appear to be empty.
In the center of the room lies a human corpse clad in plate mail; a longsword lies by the corpse’s right side, and a large shield covers its legs.

Caelius Burningseeker |

DC 12 Wisdom Saving Throw: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Caelius is a bit shaken as he looks down at the dead knight. "Did they do this?" He grits his teeth. "If so then they need to be taken back to town and tossed in a cell." He leans down by the man to inspect the wounds.

Dungeon Master Tony |

The body is chewy and bloated for lack of better words--weeks old. He is wearing plate armor that is battered and dented in places from blunt weapons and kicks. The armor is serviceable and even roughed up is worth a fortune! It would be a small matter to have the armor repaired and re-sized to fit like a glove. You could probably don it now with some field repairs.

Baghotir Nightthane |

Baghotir helps disrobe the poor dead man and offers it to Caelius, "...though if you don't wear the heavy armors, I can certainly use it. Be a bit better than what I've got now and that's the truth."
Either way, he'll drag/carry the two archers back downstairs with the lady. "Do we want to interrogate them, or just take them into town for questioning? Might be there's a bounty on their heads, and either way we'll want that armor properly fitted to someone."
"I suggest we just take them in, though if you want I am decent at questioning." (Better at Insight than Persuasion, but still a +4, though I thought I saw someone with a +6. Maybe I can at least 'help'.)
He'll also take a short rest prior to any further action as he really is quite wounded.
Short Rest: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 (7/10hp)

Dungeon Master Tony |

STOP...I am really sorry to do this fellas, but...
As Baghotir starts to remove the armor, thick, chunky substance that resembles spoiled milk starts oozing from the body and coalescing into a swarm of small grubs. The swarm quickly grows in size and divides into two separate swarms of the creatures.
Initiative has been rolled.
1. Venn
2. Belwick
3. Caelius
4. Alisanne
5. Baghotir
6. Swarms
Map updated.

Baghotir Nightthane |

I won't be on later, so I'll go ahead and post my round now, though I'm at the end. If either swarm is 'still standing' he'll blast it - or try to!
Baghotir panics a bit when the worms cover his body and he worries about them burrowing in his ears, let alone his nose - or even eyes!
"Ugh!"
So he moves away from his swarm and overreacts, casting Guiding Bolt!
Guiding Bolt: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 damage (r): 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 5) = 13 (If hit, next inbound attack has advantage.)
- - -

Baron Belwick Donnamoor |

Also posting early. Whatever Venn does will probably not change my turn
Seeing the grubs swarm out of the armor, Belwick moves closer to the secret door. He weaves a repeat of his incantation, looking to light the grubs on fire!
Fire Bolt vs Nearest Swarm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage (Fire): 1d10 ⇒ 6

Alisanne Skullfist |

Alisanne's dagger scores a hit and the last opponent falls. Killed or unconscious? Tell me or you can post and narrate it if you like.
Each party member earns +30 XP
The dagger flies true and slices into the man's calf as it flies past. The wound to his leg causes him to stumble and fall, hitting his head on wood floor, robbing him of consciousness.

Excellent! Now we will deal with the swarms. Should you survive you will have two hostages.

Alisanne Skullfist |

Alisanne hops over one of the chests and puts as much distance between her and the grubs, coming to stand next to Belwick.
I think we'll need all the help we can get with these.
Alisanne puts her flute to her lips and begins playing a lively march to help inspire her friends.
Casting Bless on Venn, Baghotir, and Belwick. +1d4 to any attack or save for 1 minute.

Venn Greenbough |

Going into this not knowing how swarms work in 5e AT ALL, and I'm okay with this... I'm assuming my blade will do little, if anything.
Venn looks around for something large to tip over, hoping to squash as many of the grubs as possible.

Dungeon Master Tony |

Copied from Slack:
Cool! Okay... I like this. There are some empty metal bins in the room that can work. The swarms are currently occupying the same squares as Baghotir and Caelius. But I think you can move, use your interact to seize the bin and move it over, and then Ready the squashing. The trigger will be one of the characters evacuating that space.
I don't have any information on the metal bins beyond that they're empty. But Venn is pretty strong. I think they can be dragged/pushed at least and then tipped with an action. I think you should ready an improvised weapon attack. Use your Strength (Athletics) as your attack modifier, you will do 1d4+STR Bludgeoning Damage, and the Swarm is going to take an additional 1d6 of, "Falling", damage.

Venn Greenbough |

Venn looks around, spying the big metal bins. He looks over at his friends, "MOVE! GET OUT OF THE WAY!"
He hefts one bin, ready to slam it down hard and then scrape it across the floor. Trigger for Readied action is one of the PCs moving clear.
STR: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 for DMG if hit: 1d4 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (3) = 7

Caelius Burningseeker |

Caelius leaps out of the way as he draws his shield back out. His face turns a sickly green as he lays there on his rump. "Ugh, that is just as back as the spiders." As he watches the outer layer of skin begin to peel off with the armor he leans over and vomits everywhere. "That is all yours Baghotir."
Stride, Draw Shield
HP 6/12
AC 17 (+2 (19) w/ Shield)
Short Rest Die 0/1

Dungeon Master Tony |

Baghotir panics and moves away from the swarm of grubs, heedless of their little mouths...
Grubby Grub: 1d20 ⇒ 15 MISS
He blasts it with divine light and burns away what feels like a countless amount of grubs. The remainder of the swarm glows faintly.
Attacks against the northern swarm have advantage.
Caelius disengages and avoids an Opportunity Attack.
As soon as he's clear, Venn topples one of the metal vats on top. The swarm is smooshed, but seconds later is reformed and it oozes slowly towards the ranger. The same swarm is blasted by Belwick's magical fire.
Alisanne plays an old Faerie tune and everyone feels guided by weird magicks (party is Blessed).
The northern swarm moves towards Baghotir. Both swarms dash so no attack, but they cover Venn and Baghotir and threaten them.
Party is up.

Baghotir Nightthane |

Baghotir is swarmed again, but this time he keeps his head - just. Probably too he's out of spells and so that has limited his choices.
He'll disengage and retreat a bit toward the group.
- - -

Venn Greenbough |

"TRITHEREON!" Venn steps out of the swath, grubs clinging to his legs.
He tears down another vat down on the swarm:
Blessed Athletics: 1d20 + 5 + 1d4 ⇒ (19) + 5 + (1) = 25 for DMG: 1d4 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (3) = 7
