I picked up the Shining South for FR yesterday from Drivethru, and I think I can do a long term campaign with it. The adventures will be set in Dambrath. on the southern shore of Faerun. Figure Dambrath's aesthetic to be part Sinbad of the Arabian Nights, part bronze age Ugarit, part medieval Israel, part Wild Elves, and some Halruaa influence. Although I won't pick up the campaign until my Cormyr adventure is done.

The land is mostly civilized. The one exception is the Forest of Amtar, where the wild elves dwell. There are orcs in the western mountains that borders with Halruaa, and there is the Eastern Shaar and the Granuin Forest.

Since the setting is the south, prepare for a sub-tropical climate. Like the Jungles of Chult. There is a rainy season, and a dry season.

Races: Approximately 15% of the population are the half-elf nobles. Drow half-elves. 80% are human with drow elven blood. True humans (light skinned and fair haired) are rare. The rest are halflings and humanoids. Gnolls are often used as estate guards. Elves are almost never seen within Dambrath.

Languages: Most of the people in Dambrath speak Akalan, the original tongue of the Akaiuns. The "high" language of Dambrath is drow. The priestesses of Loviatar are all taught the "maidens' tongue", a language said to be sacred to Loviatar. Actually, it is a degenerate version of Thorass, the trading tongue of Amn and much of the Sword Coast. Someone who speaks Thorass cant make himself understood in the maiden's tongue. About 20% of the population, mostly those who deal with outsiders, also speak a bit of the common tongue.

Dressed for Success: Think of loin clothes or fur briefs for common workers and peasants, and you're not far off. Warriors typically wear padded clothing or soft leather armor to accommodate the heat. Plate Maille is rare. True nudity among peasants is uncommon -- young children are encouraged to play in the nude.

Merchants typically wear loose clothing. Vests are common among the merchant class, with middle class women wearing bras under their vests to protect their modesty. Clothes are produced from cotton and linen. Nobles dress in the finest silks imported from the Far East. Adventurers typically wear merchant clothing, or armor. Better yet, watch a Sinbad movie (Suggestions are the 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and the Golden Voyage of Sinbad) to come up with your character's costume.

Technology: Dambrath's technology is primarily the age of steel. About the tech of medieval Israel (Outreamer). Technology is about the time of the Crusades, to put it flatly. Damascus Steel (+1 Masterwork) is produced by swordsmiths, while armor smiths craft the finest leather armors. Blacksmiths are needed to make nails, and other iron implements.

Other Details: buy a copy of the Shining South (2e) and read up on the Dambrath entry.

Making a Character
To make an Adventurer in the land of Dambrath requires: 25 point buy, two traits, background skills, and start at level 1. Players may choose: Half-elf (half-drow variant), Human, Halfling, Dwarf (rare), orc, or gnoll. Other races (such as Aarakroka) have to be approved by me.

Class: All classes from the Core Rulebook to Ultimate Intrigue fit in the Realms. Smokepowder is rare, so the Gunslinger is rare. Try to stay away from the Occult Adventures sourcebook and use Ultimate Psionics instead when creating psionic characters. You may choose any archetype from APG, ACG, UM, and UC. Check with me if you want to create an Unchained character.

Definitely interested in the realms, though I have never played or DMed in Dambrath.

So, more or less how much time are we talking about?

About 1 month.

Well, that gives me time to read everything I can get about the shining south.

How do you handle clerics' domains and Faerun gods?

Generally, the 3e book Powers and Pantheons have entries for all the gods and should be consulted. I can help you with subdomains, of course. :)

I'm in ;) this could be VERY fun!

Sounds fun may look into this. Have a couple ideas.

Finding good reading material would exclude you?

I'm not sure it's that kind of group ...
That was some good reading, thank you!!!

Half-Drow nobility? How cool is that. But it is *so* rare to play a gnoll! I’ll be making one. Will do some more reading before making his background.

Would a constructed pugilist brawler be alright?

grumbaki... you followed me to this one I see.....usually I post interest after you already have. Nice to have ninja'd you for once. :)

Great minds think alike…fools seldom differ. :D

Elton: the gnoll has a racial hd of 2 levels. How are you adjusting this to make them on par with the other races? I'm looking at an alchemist with either dwarf or gnoll. Building both then seeing which i like and is easier to story up

YES, Grumbaki if you're going to go gnoll, got to try that Half-Drow Nobel goodness, or should that be...

GM EltonJ can we play LE?

So let's say a Half-Drow investigator. All them positions and poisons to work with. Just what a lesser-noble would want to learn when seeking to claw his way up that slippy ladder of power.

roll starting wealth unless directed otherwise: gp: 3d10 ⇒ (6, 1, 1) = 8 x10

ALso: crafting b4 starting at crafting prices?

I an leaning towards a Half Drow Arcanist specializing in Enchantment. A very low ranking house that doesn't like the orderly Hierarchy

Um, I hope you're not going to backstab the party.

Basic chassis for character is here. Will write backstory later. But the basic idea here is a Gnoll bodyguard. His right arm was mangled beyond recognition defending a nobleman from an assassination attempt. As a reward, cold iron was fused into the mangled mess and enchanted, giving him a functioning arm and hand once more. Given his profession, the hand has a blade attached to it, so that he is now always armed.

Will get a proper backstory up when at a computer.

In that case ... maybe I will submit Kendryl as an Azatariel.

The Chaotic Good Swashbuckler who will constantly keep an eye out for selfishness and evil.

By rebuilding the race using the ARG.

Two more questions for you:
1.) would you allow a hobgoblin worshiper of ilneval the orc god of brutality and war?
2.) If so what domains are available?

ilneval

Well.... with her being LE she would have a contract with the party, and as such the extensive clauses under the heading 'Wheaton's Law' would stop him from backstabbing the party :)

Thinking about it, going to make him and her. But she has a very masculine look drow with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. IMAGE HERE

And if Kendryl wishes to keep an eye on her, well by all means do so, but know this she will be keeping an eye on him. For naive trusting of strangers and selfless acts of generosity that would bleed the party dry of wealth, haha

Possibly. Ilneval's domains in 3e are: Destruction, Evil, Orc, Planning, and War.

In Pathfinder they are: Destruction (Catastrophe, Hatred), Evil (Demon), Orc, War (Tactics)

Probably roll20, since I know it so well.

Been filling out her profile yer as a Crinti she is Lawful-Evil.
With a small E, she is just pragmatic and has the Half-Drow pride as a sin. She is more unfeeling for those she sees as her lessers.
But she does not go out of her way to BE evil for the sake of evil. She does not follow an evil god. Logical/Pragmatic/unfeeling. It's all about the 'means justifies the ends' with her. If you have an argument that shows doing a 'GOOD' deed will give benefit to her she will do it.
Like I said 'logical and pragmatic.

I gave her the 'lesser noble' trait, cus when she meets someone of higher rank she has to suck that puppy up and kiss butt like all other low-rank nobles.

One other thing is she really really does not like the Red Wizards.
Why you will never know [backstory] but given the chance to spend some time with one and a torture chamber, ooo she would even smile.

Starting wealth 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12x10=120+100 Trait = 220gp

Is sword devil an allowable archetype for ranger?

@ EltonJ= I have been building 2 characters. I want approval for them or nix them before I complete the stories and crunch. I am ok playing either one but they are different in styles big time.

1. A hobgoblin warpriest of Ilneval war domain. He was captured as a slave for the orcs but when they found out he was as combat willing and capable as he was they decided to train him for a shock trooper for the horde. One of the priests of Ilneval took special interest in him and eventually he converted to the god's views on war and tactics. He now has his freedom due to his god worship. He still is treated with some suspicion among the orcs though. Lots more I can work with on that.

2. A dwarf alchemist crypt breaker archetype. He focus's on poison and the use and creation of it. Alchemy comes secondary to poison but both are very useful. He is desert born from parents of a merchant caravan. He began to "venture off" on his own during several of the trips. Especially when he would hear of a treasure or ancient ruin.
He worked and befriended with a half drow rogue during this time and the two made a strong duo. Lots more I can do with this one as well.

Which would you suggest and/or what background changes would you want to see to make one of them work?

Ironperenti wrote:

Sword devil? I don't think so.

I'm working on an Arcanist School Savant Enchanter who is a Cintri bastard. She thus is a deface lesser noble who cares little for the social Hierarchy, but has learned enough to keep herself free of the lash...most or the time. She does know how to use her magic and her natural Charisma to aid her most of the time.

Background:

Like most gnolls, Ulthak hails from the Gnollwatches. Born into one of the tribes that consolidated under Grubash Blacksnout, Ulthak was but one of the many gnolls who was hired out as mercenaries and bodyguards for the Dambrathan nobility. He was chosen to accompany a young half-drow noble from T'lindhet in moving through the nearby underdark trade route, not because of any particular martial ability on his part, but rather because he could speak both Aklan and Elvish. It was on this mission that he had the chance to show his worth, as a cloaker that hid above them dropped down at the young noble. Ulthak, without thinking, shoved the nobleman out of the way, causing the creature to fall upon him instead. His raised right arm went straight into the creature's mouth as it wrapped around him, like it's namesake. By the time that the creature had been killed and removed from him, his arm was a ruined mess, with little more than one and sinew left. Quick attention from healers managed to save his life, but left him crippled.

The nobleman was impressed, for in his delirium Ulthak kept asking if their charge was safe. Out of a sense of gratitude, the nobleman rewarded Ulthak with a new arm, sending him to the finest healers that his house had to offer.

It was certainly within the power of the nobility to merely regenerate his arm, but it was decided that if they were to waste their talents on a mere gnoll mercenary, then they might as well use the opportunity to experiment. Deep beneath the earth cold iron was commonly mined. The rare metal had a number of uses and was especially valued for it's ability to interfere with some planar beings' bindings. It was theorized that such a being could be used to bring the metal to life, and that when attached to a living being, it would respond like living flesh.
Using this, the House's healer decided to see if the metal could be bound to a living body. Using a mixture of metallurgy, divine and arcane magic, the very painful process was performed of reforging Ulthak's crippled arm. To their great surprise, he not only survived the process, but it worked. While it was true that more trials would be needed, it was seen as a great success in the field of science!

With his contract over, Ulthak is now in search of more work. He sees his arm as a badge of pride, proof that he is worthy of working for wealthy and powerful patrons.

And there we go! Ulthak the constructed pugilist brawler. His right arm looks like this. It has the viscous blades upgrade, meaning that it can do bludgeoning and slashing damage and has a 19-20 crit range. He has the feat "possessed hand" which reflects the process used to make his arm come to life. He doesn't even know that something was bound into the arm to make the metal come to life. He's just happy have it works.

So he's definitely a brawler. He has lamellar leather armor, in the local fashion, and on his left arm he wears steel gauntlets and vambraces, which acts like a heavy shield. So when he fights, it's certainly done in a pugilistic style.

Of the two the dwarf alchemist is pretty unique. I haven't seen many people run with such a build, and using poison is not something that I can recall ever coming across. The only thing that I might suggest is dropping Con or Wis down to 15 and pushing Str up to 12. Better carrying capacity. And for someone so tough, it makes sense (to me at least) for him to have slightly higher than average strength. But that's just a suggestion, the build looks solid.

I have to agree there. Not many people would use poison for a PC. Though poison is typically the woman's choice of weapons. Though, I wonder if the dwarf would use acid to break locks and deal with traps.

Just about done with the Chaotic Good Azatariel, and it looks like just in time really so that he can kinda keep an eye on everyone at this point.

The evil drow, the poisoning dwarf ... this party needs its altruist ;)

Haha, poison is good but a blade in the back is sooo much quicker.

As Ros is an investigator who uses Alcamey, I think she would know a poisoning dwarf. If not pay for his services.

On another note, this alt Roz is done, I used the 10 min background in place of a background story. Always find it gives good hooks for play on game.

And I found this even better image of her HERE

Kendryl would you mind if Ros and a kind of lite-hearted love-hate relationship with your PC. Loving the fact she can take the mickey when he is being overly trusting, and hateing it when he makes her go along with his altruist actions when logically put. :)
