A tall Ulfen man reports, but says nothing. He has several weapons strapped to his body, all of which seem well used. His leathers show patches from previous fights, but seem to be in good condition. He walks with cat-like precision, always aware of his surrounding, his stealth belying his 6'4" frame.
Maggie Poppins |
A female goblin wearing a porcelain mask depicting an attractive human woman with a little black hat greets everyone warmly as they arrive.
Morgan Titchwillow |
A short woman in dark robes joins the group. Her eyes, one green and the other violet, are a sign of genetic heterochromia. She keeps her distance, not sure what to make of the Ulfen sailor and perhaps prejudging the masked goblin. Trailing behind her is a surprising creature: a dweomercat! It's tiny, and clearly still just a cub.
She brushes aside a lock of raven black hair she speaks. "Greetings, fellow Pathfinders. I am Morgan Titchwillow, practitioner of the arcane arts. With me is my companion, Asher," she says, gesturing at the familiar.
The dweomercat adds its own voice, a soft purring sound, to the conversation. "Do any of you have food? I'm ravenous."
Morgan shoots her familiar a dark look, which the familiar feels through their empathic link. It flinches, then moves back behind the wizard.
Profit Humble Measure |
Humble Measure wears pristine white robes embroidered with silver, and long white gloves that cover his hands from fingertip to elbow. A bright halo the color of soft gold shines above his head, and his eyes are golden too — the color of ancient coins. He wears a golden key around his neck, a symbol of his faith.
He carries a pleasant expression on his face. He nods politely to you and speaks with a cadence you could measure with a metronome.
Hello, hello! It is delightful to embark upon another Project with the Society. His voice is warm, but he does not shake your hand. I am Prophet Humble Measure, a servant of the Lord of Walls and Ditches and a follower of the prophecies of Kalistrade, diligently preparing for the Hour of Victory. When he says the word "prophet" it somehow sounds like he's spelling it with an f.
To such an end, please sign this simple Service Agreement while we await our briefing. He places quills on the nearest surface. You can even read it if you wish, though I assure you it is merely a most basic Service Agreement and Liability Waiver for the services I shall be rendering during this project.
He looks at the dweomercat cat begging for food and frowns.

"So you are saying that you won't do your job unless we sign this piece of paper? Where I come from, you don't sign anything, 'less you want to spend the rest of your life on a ship." says Fafrd. "You do your job, I do mine, and we'll all get along just fine.
"Besides, didn't you learn about being a Pathfinder? Explore, Report, Cooperate?"
Fearful Berry |
A small squat, mushroom topped leshy with several gray and decaying tendrils shudders in as he looks over his missive, handed to him by Humble Measure once more. Dozens of eyes and sharp pointed teeth line its face like some sort of grotesque monster. He had not always been this way. In fact a small red corrupted Abyssal shard from Finadar lay embedded in his body that caused his body to decay slightly.
A vined hand reaches out as a shrill child-like voice shrieks that doesn't match the appearance. "I'm Berry!"
Reading over the agreement he tugs on Humble's cloak and points to a specific subsection. "This part hurts me." Dhampir

"So you are saying that you won't do your job unless we sign this piece of paper? Where I come from, you don't sign anything, 'less you want to spend the rest of your life on a ship." says Fafrd.
Or your head being separated from your body and falling into a basket, chimes in a tow-headed human, picking under their fingernails with the tip of an ornate blade. If you come from my homeland, anyway.

Morgan frowns at the paperwork, but not for the same reasons as the others. "Does your compact with the Pathfinder Society not supersede this document? I can appreciate the thoroughness, but I suspect that this document would not hold weight in the court of Absalom."

Humble nods to Fearful after stepping out of reach. Don't be hurt. In my experience, many vampire-kin attempt to hide their ancestry. Its unwise to obfuscate the truth from your medical provider. I do not judge, and prefer to be told in advance so I can adjust my preparations and ensure that you are not caught in a wash of channeled positive energy. Knowing in advance, I can even prepare negative energy spells to render better services. A good contract is all about clarity and communication, and beneficial to both parties, you see. Humble prepped a harm or two for healing the Fearful along the way in fact
He smiles at Fafrd. What’s a little contract law between friends? It merely explicates what we have already tacitly agreed to as members of the Society, after all. Why, last mission a horrid melixie named Thimbletoes smeared my face with honey whilst I was unconscious, as a prank. Thanks to this contract I was able to have the Church of Abadar serve him papers at his home; they arrived stapled under the lid of a barrel of honey.
Silliness aside Humble will still help whether you sign or not of course. He just prefers the signatures.
There is nothing in the contract that contradicts the rules or ethos of the Society.
Dungeon Master S - 2e |
It's quite the journey from the Grand Lodge in Absalom to the Anthusis Lodge in the capital of Vidrian. There is plenty of time to get to know each other, learn about each agent's skills, weaknesses, and comportment.
Dungeon Master S - 2e |
The office of Venture-Captain Finze Bellaugh is densely packed with shelves of books, maps, scrolls, and even more esoteric methods of note-keeping. The room’s wide windows are open, allowing a cool breeze to pass through the office. As the venture-captain stands to greet you, the gathered Pathfinders, a small crystal ball that had been used as a paperweight rolls off of his desk, falling into a nest of scrolls which are covered in scribbled notes. “Whoops,” the venture-captain says with a chuckle, deftly navigating the mess to replace the paperweight. Having ensured no vital documents are at risk of blowing away, he addresses the group. “Pathfinders! Today, we have an opportunity to do some good for the people of Vidrian and earn a little favor with the government. Here, let’s take a look at this.”
The venture-captain slides a narrow indoor curtain to the side, revealing a bell made of cold iron that hangs low from the ceiling. The bell is one foot in diameter and two feet tall. Intricate engravings depict crocodile-headed humanoids and normal crocodiles with monstrous features clambering out of a deep pool towards smaller humanoids on the bell’s crown. “The Society recently recovered this interesting object. I’ve been studying it, and it seems to have remnants of magic made for repelling bilokos. Or perhaps attracting them? Well, they’re awful things, and according to the old tales, they love bells—perhaps this object is a lure of some kind? According to my research, it belongs to a community of Song’o halflings, who must miss it dearly. This is quite curious, as Song’os typically craft more portable or temporary art to suit their nomadic lifestyle. This, however, is quite sturdy. I think there’s more here than meets the eye."
“How did we stumble across such an object, you ask? Now there’s an exciting tale! Recently, we learned of a band of mercenaries who tried to steal away with a ship and its cargo of cultural relics that need to be returned to their rightful keepers. We worked with the locals to stop them, rescue the ship’s crew, and recover the relics in a relatively good condition...” Finze pauses to closely examine the bell before breathing on the surface and wiping the spot with his handkerchief. “Make that pristine condition!"
“Unfortunately, the Imminent Laughter—that’s the ship— crashed during the pursuit. Our priority was rescuing the marooned crew, so the thieves escaped, and we didn’t have time for a thorough search of the wreck. We grabbed what looked important and got our people back to shore. There may be documents on board indicating where the bell came from—after all, the whole point of the Imminent Laughter’s voyage was to bring cultural relics back to Vidrian so they could be returned to their rightful owners."
“So, your mission is to head to the wreckage just up the shore and see what you can find. Report back to me once you’ve explored the wreck. Then, perhaps we can send you to return the bell and learn why it’s so important. If we can lend a helping hand and make some new allies along the way, all the better. Any questions?”
No mere neophyte agents, you've been diligent in your studies, skills, and are caught up on the latest edition of the Pathfinder Chronicles... at least some of you are. So you might know a few things about which the Venture-captain is talking. Feel free to volunteer to make Recall Knowledge checks concerning Fey Lore of Nature before asking questions.
Flamel Perenik |
Flamel appears distracted throughout the briefing, but speaks up almost as soon as Venture-Captain Bellaugh is done. How deep is the water the wreck is in? they ask, in clipped Common. Will we need to go underwater?

Morgan has made a point to study. After all, knowledge is power. And being busy reading means others leave her alone.

Then:
Humble seems grateful when Morgan returns the signed contract.
On the journey to Vidrian he secures the most cost-efficient room and board: basic gruel, warm water, and nights on the open deck in a stained old hammock that he borrowed for free. He entertains himself by re-selling trinkets among the sailors for a lamentable profit. Flavoring a failed Bagrain Hunter downtime from last session.
____
Now:
Humble sips a glass of lukewarm water while he carefully listens to Bellaugh's briefing. He grins at the idea of poring over extensive ledgers and ship logs. One can only hope these documents have escaped unharmed. It will be a joy to assist in discovering legal provenance of these items — even if it might get me dirty. Assume we can't prep spells like water breathing as we're leaving today? Humble will take a Chest Feather Token for his school item. It might carry the bell if it's under 10 bulk and fits, or loot from the wreck.
Finze, you mentioned that the Song’os are Nomadic. Should we recover the required documentation, how are we to find them?

Fearful also returns the signed contract, not so much with his name but a stamp of a small rotten berry juice made with his vine. "Is this ship underwater now?" He asks curiously, not sure if he will float or not. He lived among the shallow swamps and bogs so wasn't really sure.

She breaks into song.
"I love to laugh
Loud and long and clear
I love to laugh
It's getting worse every year
The more I laugh, the more I fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more I'm a merrier me, it's embarrassing
The more I'm a merrier me
Some people laugh through their noses
Sounding something like this, dreadful
Some people laugh through their teeth goodness sake
Hissing and fizzing like snakes
Not at all attractive to my way of thinking
When things strike me as funny
I can't hide it inside
And squeak as the squeakelers do
I've got to let go with a ho ho ho
And a ha ha ha too"
She notices no one is signing along and gathers her composure.
"I'm sorry Venture Captain, you were saying?"

With the back drop of the jaunty 3/4 beat to Maggie's song, the newly formed team puts their knowledge forth.
The venture-captain gives a chuckle, "The wreck never gets deeper than two or three feet. The tide isn't very severe there, so you should be okay." Expect difficult terrain at the worst.
Morgan has heard of Bilokos. They are cunning hunters who like to use tricks to single out victims and lure them away from their companions. They are said to subsist entirely on humanoid flesh. Fearful Berry and Maggie both recall reading the same entry at the Grand Lodge.
Fafrd recalls a lecture with a deeper knowledge that aligns with the mission. Bilokos have a fascination with bells, often using them for hunting and setting traps, but they can also be tricked by these covetous instruments. Bilokos who eat spellcasters can become more powerful creatures known as elokos, and rumors tell of powerful eloko leaders with connections to primal forces deep within the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse.
The venture-captain confirms with a nod as he points at one of the crocodile-headed humanoids on the bell. “Ravenous fey creatures that can only eat the flesh of humanoids. They plague the Expanse’s jungles, and they’re cunning hunters. Though I can’t discern exactly what this bell’s function is, it seems to be some sort of lure or ward to protect against biloko attacks. All the more reason to find out who owns the bell and return it as soon as we can. So I understand your concern Humble, it would be difficult—no, impossible—to find the bell’s owners by wandering around the jungle, so it’s vital that we learn more from the wreck, if we can.”

Not wanting to be regaled with another, the Venture-captain preempts Maggie, "If there are no questions, I suggest you head out and not let the wreck deteriorate any more."

After about 2 hours of uneventful travel north along the shore of Desperation Bay, the you reach the wreckage of the trade vessel Imminent Laughter.
Driftwood litters the sandy beach, still flowing freely from the bisected remains of a trade vessel resting in the shallows. Smooth rocks break the surface and surround the wreckage, as if the land itself reached up to tear the boat to pieces before clumsily grasping its prize.

Maggie's lingering performance continues, but the beat gets heavier as she gets excited by the combat.
"They call me the Hiphopopotamus
Flows that glow like phosphorous
Poppin' off the top of this esophagus
Rockin' this metropolis
I'm not a large water-dwelling mammal
Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis?"
Her Goblin Song is extra annoying and loud, irritating both hippos.
Performance vs Will DC: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29
Causes -1 to Will Saves on success or crit success
"Leave my friends along you brutish water pig!"
She then blasts the nearest hippo with Phantom Pain (Will Save DC21)
