Oddman |
Oddman gives an "all clear" sign to the group and steps back a bit.
GM Bret |
A large computer mainframe stands against the area's eastern wall, its guts exposed and several of its components sprawled throughout the room amid a layer of junk. Opposite this computer is a collapsed hallway, its chunks of concrete adding to the debris. Double doors stand in the north wall and the south wall, although the southern exit is partially concealed behind piles of trash.
The debris makes all areas in this room difficult terrain.
Shokil |
Shokil eyes up the room and then cautiously enters it.
"Anyone able to salvage information from that?" he says pointing to the computer.
"Be helpful if there was a catalogue or similar to help us find what we are looking for.."
He pokes hopefully through the junk in search of... anything.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Kiff Kiffington |
Kiff looks over the room from the doorway. perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
"Looks safe to me, Oddman what um do you think?"
He steps just inside the room with his weapons ready.
Oddman |
Oddman casts Spider Climb on himself and moves through the ceiling all the way to the secret door, trident in hands. If nothing jumps at him, he'll examine the floor from up above:
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32
Otherwise, if the x-ray visor has charges, he'll sense through the secret door into the next room.
GM Bret |
Since they normally say if something doesn’t have charges, the X-ray visor is charged in spite of being left there for a long time.
Other than the footing, the room appears safe for the moment.
The computer is a mess and will need someone to repair it. Searching the debris, Shokil sees a few parts in the debris that might be useful for that.
Oddman gets close to the secret panel and still doesn’t find any traps here. He does find the concealed control that would allow him to open the panel.
Azara Thenason |
Azara heads into essentially the center of the room, shield strapped on and solar weapon in hand. He keeps an eye out for trouble.
"One room at a time, right, guys? Can anyone fix that thing? Then we'll check that hidden door. Assuming it doesn't take us somewhere else, we'll go south afterwards since that route looks largely unused before going north," Azara says, pointing at the computer then the doors he mentions with his solar weapon as he speaks. His tone is far more suggestion than command.
Oddman |
Oddman points out the concealed control for the door-opening people to use, when the time comes.
Sprocket Tension |
What would it be to fix the computer and how long would it take?
GM Bret |
Sprocket estimates that it will take him at least an hour to repair the computer here. Engineering check
Looking around, the obvious doors to the south have a lot of junk piled in front of them that you estimate would take an hour for a single person to clear. The more people working on it, the faster you can clear the way. It also appears that the door is magnetically locked.
The passage to the west are collapsed and completely impassible.
Shokil |
Shokil will spend the time starting to clear the rubble from the secret door to the south.
"Let's not spend longer here than we need. I'm feeling queasy..."
Oddman |
Maybe just yank the data modules from the computer and move on? These "takes x amount of time" tasks are kinda obvious traps to douse the group in radiation for even more time
Sprocket Tension |
Now that my environmental protections are enabled, I am immune to the radiation.
GM Bret |
Together, it takes 50 minutes for Shokil and Dytabail to clear the rubble.
A short time after that, Sprocket manages to get the computer working again. The computer allows access to the complex’s lighting, temperature control, and the magnetically secured doors. It also displays two secure data files — one labeled “Ralveen” and one labeled “Prima” — each secured behind separate firewalls.
One of the things that Kiff and found in the debris is a DNA scanner. Sprocket thinks it would be much easier to get past the two firewalls if he installed it and had an appropriate DNA sample.
Computers to hack the system, one check for each file,
Engineering to put the DNA scanner back in place, then you would need an appropriate DNA sample.
Azara: D-Suit III, level 9
Dytabail: D-Suit II, level 7
Kiff: Lashunta tempweave, basic, level 4
Shokil: Vesk Overplate I, level 6
Sprocket: Lashunta Tempweave Adv, level 8
Oddman: kasatha microcord II, level 6
Dytabail, I didn’t see anything indicating you sealed your armor. You do get +6 rather than the below listed +4 vs radiation.
The rest of you have Armor of less than Item Level 7.
You get +4 for Armor vs radiation and any modifiers you would have vs Poison.
DC 17
If you failed:
The victim takes a –2 penalty to Fortitude saves, Constitution checks, and Constitution-based DCs.
You probably want to note this in your header as a condition.
Oddman |
Fortitude: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Shokil |
fort: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 + 4 = 31
Another way of queasiness assails Shokil as the door slowly gets revealed.
"I think at some stage we might need to retire to the ship to rest us and de-rad" he mutters.
As the team starts discussing the DNA scanner, Shokil points out that "We have a body back in the bath-tub. The scanner may at least tell us who that is..."
He fiddles round, trying to offer a hand with getting wires attached in hard-to-reach places.
engineering(aid): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Smith scoured the room. He could feel the toxins in the air working their way through his damaged armour. But he had a mission to do. If it cost him his life, well... that wouldn't be the first time. Didn't mean he had to like it.
Chomping down on his cigar he let his suits scrubbers dead with the smoke, and cancelled the alarms. They were just a distraction at a time like this anyway.
Glancing left and right he assessed what was left of his squad. Not much to work with, but if they survived, he'd have to write up a report on them all. And that was worse than fighting a whole squad of jinsul single handed.
Sprocket Tension |
sprocket will try to hack the planet
Computers: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18
Computers: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35
Sprocket will try to use the DNA from the body that Shokil suggested.
Engineering: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (11) + 20 = 31
GM Bret |
Oddman starts to feel queasy during the time that the junk is cleared away and the computer is being fixed.
Still need Fortitude save from Kiff.
I had forgotten to mention it, there is also the +2 circumstance bonus from Oddman’s Resist Radiation spell gem.
Slight change from the order posted because someone with Sprocket’s skills would have realized the only way installing the scanner helps is to do it before the hacking attempts.
Sprocket and Shokil work together to install the DNA scanner and then Shokil grabs some DNA samples for the scanner.
It is only thanks to the DNA samples that Sprocket gets through the first firewall. Having gotten through one, he finds it much easier to get past the other.
It contains several personal video logs of the izalguun Ralveen, who wears a thick ocular visor. It looks like the same visor you found in the bathtub.
Initially, Ralveen appears as a jovial, middle-aged male with several patches of brown mottling intermixed amid his silvery flesh. The initial logs are exceedingly dull, but in the third-to-last entry, he explains the arrival of a curious golden artifact.
In the next day's log entry, Ralveen plainly suffers some sort of ailment, and his skin has strange, downy patches.
The last entry is dated many years ago. In this final entry, Ralveen's skin is covered with feathers. He perches awkwardly on the back of his chair rather than sitting in it, and his eyes dart around nervously as he speaks.
Relic number 001237 has infected Prima and me with a strange radiation sickness. I fear our unborn children may have suffered the brunt of this taint, and I am unsure I can reverse the radiation's change—it's affected their base genetic code. I have found an antidote for this sickness, but there is a small risk of terminating Prima's pregnancy. While I have this vaccine at the ready, Prima has refused it. Since we detected our genetically altered code, she has grown both in physical stature and in foul temperament. She has turned violent on several occasions, but I forgive her. I know it is the sickness and not her. I plan to inject her tonight while she sleeps, as I cannot risk our sickness becoming worse. If we lose our unborn children, I beg for forgiveness.
This file contains several personal video logs of the izalguun Prima. Initially, she appears as a stern and commanding female with a silver coloration void of any dappling or marbling. She wears fashionable clothing and is obviously pregnant.
Her logs detail major decisions and mark her as the facility's chief caretaker. Her second-to-last entry describes the arrival of the golden obelisk artifact, which she finds particularly exciting.
Her final entry was recorded the day after Ralveen's final entry. Prima constantly scratches at a mucus-like sheen over her skin, particularly between her fingers. She seems distressed, and her speech is garbled, as if her tongue was swollen.
To those who discover this log, know that I am guilty of murder, and I would do it again. My children live, and I plan to bring them to term.
As for Ralveen's odious yellow cure, know that I threw it into the trash compactor and have destroyed it. No cure should come at the destruction of life. I embrace my change, and I realize that soon I shall be incapable of the thought required to run this facility and continue communications on this log.
This is my last entry.
I make my descent below to prepare for birth. I shall alter the environment to suit my metamorphosis.
If you discover this, turn back now, and leave us alone. I have murdered before to protect my babies, and I will not hesitate to do so again.
Shokil |
"Well, that isn't worrying.." swallows Shokil.
"Let's hope the radiation that we are subject to isn't going to turn us all into psychopaths.." shivers the little author.
He pauses, and rereads the logs. "Like any good author there are clues in here. They have children, so we may find young Izalguun's. How long do Izalguun's live anyway, anyone remember?" he asks.
"And look here... there is a cure. Let us hope is has not really been broken, merely lost... and that we may yet find it."
GM Bret |
Just as Shokil is saying that, the secret door opens.
Six serpentine cables slither forth from a squat pillar in the center of the revealed room. Tread marks and the stench of lubricants mar this otherwise pristine chamber.
Three robots resembling four-armed humanoids with treads rather than feet and a torso protected by thick polycarbonate plates are on the other side of the door. They advance menacingly, displaying a fan of red lights and giving some sort of command in an unfamiliar language.
It is late here. I will get the map of the other room and the robots put in place tomorrow morning.
Initiative has not been rolled, you do have a chance to respond.
Kiff Kiffington |
fort: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 21
"Um can the computer turn those things off?"
Shokil |
With a rather young-human-girl-like shriek, Shokil skitters back from the cables. As he does so, he unhooks his rather long rifle and points it at the threatening bots.
"Maybe tell them we are friendly?"
Azara Thenason |
"How tragic, but I guess we know what happened and what to look out for," Azara says, after he reads the logs.
"Mates in purpose united."
"Cursed and forced apart."
"Each protecting what they love."
When the robots appear, Azara takes the opposite tact from Shokil.
He raises his hands over his head, though does not dismiss his solar weapon.
"Yeah...anyone have anything that will help us communicate here? These things are just doing their jobs. I don't want to bash them or get bashed if I don't have to."
GM Bret |
It seems these are not the patient sort of robots. After only giving you a few seconds to respond, they attack!

The hp damage is all from the radiation.
Oddman |
Oddman moves a bit closer (still hanging from the ceiling), activates his plasma scabbard and tosses his trident at blue:
Adamantine sintered trident vs. Blue's KAC: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

6 on a 2d8, how nice
Sprocket Tension |
Sprocket spent an RP earlier to regain his SP while repairing Claptrap to full
GM Bret |
@Sprocket: I thought you had, just couldn’t find it in a quick search. Please update the RP in your header.
Oddman hits purple. He observes that the plasma is slightly more effective and may speculate that it is the electrical component of the plasma which the robots are susceptible to.

Smith hated surprises. Ever since his second wife threw him that unexpected surprise party. Of course it was her that was surprised that he had brought company home..
GM Bret |
Shokil’s shot hits the green robot on a seam in the joints. It looks like the robot took far more damage than expected.

Hope I got the right icon, brown surrounds for a half orc?
Do we take radiation damage each time, not just on first exposure? Gahh, I've been playing it wrong.
Dyabail moves up to block the doorway.
Does entropic strike have range? If so..he strikes, otherwise I guess it is readied

GM Bret |
If used with a reach weapon or at higher level Entropic Strike can have reach. Dytabail doesn’t have anything that would give him reach.
It looks like you moved the correct avatar. Thanks.
Dytabail moves forward and gets ready to strike if any of the robots come within his reach.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Calming himself, Shokil puts on his "Game face".
As Sgt. Smith looked around he saw his squad had scattered. One by one the robots were lining up to come into the room, and once they were through the doorway, they were going to tear the squad a new one..
He grunted, and unslung his quad rifle. Sure, this was maybe the case for a heavy machine gun, but he didn't have a heavy machine gun. He did have the quad rifle he took off the last sniper that was foolish enough to miss him. Twice.
Subconsciously Smith reached down towards his rock hard abdomen where there was still a scar from where the third shot hadn't missed. But it wasn't like he was going to feel anything through the power armor.
Waiting for the smoke to clear, he chewed on his cigar, finger tensed to terminate the first robot though the door way.
"I think my next book is going to be a best seller!" notes the halfling cheerfully as he squeezed his trigger.

I'm not too sure where the purple robot is. If it is the half icon between Shokil and green, he'll target that instead.

Sprocket gets his weapon ready while his trusty drone moves up and attacks green. Unfortunately something must have glitched in the drone’s targeting system.
