You have arrived in Sakakabe, a port town in the province of Minkai.
Sakakabe bustles on this clear, humid summer morning. The constant buzz of conversation and commerce echoes over the concentric terraces leading up the hillside from the town’s port. Wagons clatter their way across cobbled streets, their wares bound for export on waiting cargo ships. Oyster boats are returning to port from the north, their nets filled with the morning’s catch. The air smells of brine and seaweed. Fishers and merchants alike clatter across the pier, with shouted orders and affirmations traded from vessel to cart to street. Farther down, a beaming, older Minkaian man waves his burly, tanned arms from beside a rickety boat. “Ahoy there! Always good to see fellow Pathfinders in these parts. Name’s Masuhei Okonase, former Pathfinder agent and current oyster fisher extraordinaire! Good old Fola reached out and asked me to lend a hand, and I’m always happy to help out where I can.
[b]“So, Fola tells me that you’re headed out to Kayajima to scout some ground for a new Pathfinder lodge? That’s quite exciting! We don’t get much Pathfinder activity in the area, and I’d love to see the Society have a more permanent presence here. Might even inspire me to pick up the old wayfinder again, ha!
“I’m ready to take you to Kayajima when you’re ready. If you need to pick up anything before we head out, the markets should have everything you could need. Just let me know when you’re ready to set sail.”
Questions? Now or when sailing to Kayajima.
You may take some time to Gather Information (typically Diplomacy) before setting sail.
Arlo Rumble |
A cheerful-looking halfling stands besides the other Pathfinders. His clothes are well-worn and clearly more suited for travel than for city business.
"Hello there, my name's Arlo Rumble. I'm a cleric of Gozreh and I'm currently on a pilgrimage all around the world. I went to Arcadia a while back and now I'm in Tian Xia, this is wonderful! So many new places to visit and sights to see!"
He grabs an apple from his backpack and starts peeling it, offering parts to the other Pathfinders.
"So, Masuhei, what's the weather like in Kayajima? Any precautions we need to take? Typhoons, quicksand, blizzards, the like? Also, we're supposed to meet someone named Kukuha Mukai, do you know her?"
Jayma |
Jayma had come to dread the long stretches of time spent on ships merely to reach the place of her next mission. The endless days of staring out at a featureless sea and the constant repetition of the same tiresome chores aboard ship found her regularly examining herself with a mirror for any signs of an early bleaching.
The amenities on ship were quite appalling. There was essentially no privacy and little comfort to be had anywhere. Jayma daily gave thanks to Shyka that she'd learned certain spells from her grandmother that allowed her to keep herself clean and warm or she would have gone completely mad long since.
When not otherwise engaged, Jayma usually headed to the forecastle near the bow where the rush of the wind and spray of the bow wave was the most stimulating experience available on board. If you looked there on most days, you would see a small female gnome dressed in an impressive set of cutting-edge clothing of the latest Absalom fashion gripping the gunwale and looking out at the horizon.
Your eyes would first be drawn to her pixie-cut bright orange hair framing a beautiful, but strangely otherworldly face. They would soon move to take in the multi-colored hooded coat covering a peplum bustier that barely concealed her ample charms. Her leather breeches and boots in coordinating colors completed the outfit. At her belt were two sheathed matching daggers.
Moving unceasingly from one shoulder to another, occasionally diving into Jayma's coat only to quickly emerge elsewhere, would be her white ermine familiar Twyl, with his oddly intelligent eyes.
She'd already become acquainted with those Society members that had come over with her on the ship, but seeing that others had arrived before them, she goes over and introduces herself. "Hello there fellow Pathfinders. My name is Jayma, and this..." she puts out her right hand into which the ermine leaps, standing up on its hind legs to look out at the others, "... is my friend Twyl," A pair of small wings unfold from the ermine's back and it takes to the air momentarily before landing on Jayma's shoulders once again. "You have no idea how happy I am to have finally arrived. Long sea voyages can be oh so dreary."
When Arlo offers her a piece of his apple, she waves him off. "Thank you dear Arlo, but I need something a little stronger right now." She looks about for an inn that might supply her need, but is not impressed with what is on offer near the docks. Twyl is not so reticent, and while his mistress is distracted looking about, he reaches out almost pleadingly to Arlo with his odd human-like hands. Snagging the apple from the halfling's fingers, he proceeds to make short work of it.
When Arlo asks about the weather on Kayajima, Jayma turns back to him. "I don't know anything about the weather on the island, but what I've heard of the fauna is worrisome enough. The creatures to be found there are apparently quite hardy and ferocious and make short work of anyone who tries to take advantage of the free land available there. Those who survive their encounters with the powerful beasts tend to run back to Sakakabe to lick their wounds."
Maximilian Pardus |
Whistling as he makes his way to the others Maximilian pats his pockets feeling his slightly heavier purse. The rogue spent most of his time on the trip over below decks gambling with anyone he could entice to a game.
After a few hours of rest upon disembarking Maximilian's first trip was to a gambling den. Between rounds of cards he got the locals to talk about Kayajima. "Looks like another win for me boys! Maximilian says as he takes the pot. "So," he starts as the cards are shuffled and a new round begins. "what else is there to do around her? I heard something about exotic wildlife in an island called Kayajima? What's that about?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Zelphari Caryarus |
Zelphari found the sea journey enjoyable, as usual, spending much of the time on deck, welcoming the sea spray. He recalls nostalgically his childhood living by the sea, so while he missed his mercenary days, the long sweaty walks and marches was one part he did not enjoy in particular. Life has moved on though, and one thing the Church of Irori has taught him is to focus on the now.
The middle-aged human man is of average height, his skin a tanned deep olive colour. In fact, from certain angles, it almost seems to shimmer with a bronze-like tint. He is quite well-built, but he looks rather ... weathered. He bears faint scars, as if he's seen some fighting in his younger days. Despite that, he carries a gentle smile, although a closer look reveals a faint haunted look in his eyes. You find Zelphari wearing a well-worn splint mail. Over his back hangs an assortment of weapons: a guisarme, a long bo staff, while dagger hangs from his belt. The only other thing of note is a pendant carved into the shape of Irori's open palm hanging round his neck.
Arriving on a ship separately from the rest, he gathers with the group and waits patiently for his turn to introduce himself. "Greetings. My name is Zelphari, of Irori." He introduces himself in his deep warm voice. "Well, indeed Arlo. Being in the Society does take you places. Hopping back to Absalom City from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, in my case. And now back to Sakakabe again after, like what, six months ago?" Turning to Jayma, he adds with a faint smile, "Hope no possessed trees this time in Kayajima."
diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
By the way, Zelphari will always cast false life and longstrider (L2) on himself at the start of the day.
GM Blake |
Oh dear. I apologize. I swapped the information on the skills during preparation, so this result won't make as much sense.
Zelphari and Maximillian have a little trouble finding people in Sakakabe who speak Taldane.
Arlo Rumble |
When Arlo asks about the weather on Kayajima, Jayma turns back to him. "I don't know anything about the weather on the island, but what I've heard of the fauna is worrisome enough. The creatures to be found there are apparently quite hardy and ferocious and make short work of anyone who tries to take advantage of the free land available there. Those who survive their encounters with the powerful beasts tend to run back to Sakakabe to lick their wounds."
Arlo puffs up his chest. "I don't mean to brag, but that's exactly why I'm here. I have a special bond with the flora and fauna around me. And if it does come to battle, I'm an excellent healer. Don't worry, you're safe with me!"
During the course of the travel, Arlo will sneak more and more apple slices into Twyl's little grabby hands.
Druid archetype seems to complement a Gozreh cleric well. :P
Hobbs Picklesmith |
"Aha. Everyone is here it seems."
Stepping up to greet the group is a goblin wearing a top hat and spectacles. The top hat is tattered and clearly too small for his oversized goblin head. How it manages to stay on is a complete mystery. His cracked spectacles and also too small for him and are held in place by a length of string.
"Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hobbs Picklesmith. I am a practitioner of the esoteric disciplines. I suppose the banal among you would say I am a wizard."
Hobbs bows slightly and doffs his hat, revealing a tiny hedgehog clinging to the few hairs atop his head.
Hobbs Picklesmith |
Hobbs has Burrow Elocutionist and is able to speak to burrowing mammals. It may not work on Twyl since he does not seem to be able to burrow unlike his kin.
Hobbs adjusts his spectacles and approaches the ermine, making series of chittering sounds as though asking tiny animal a question.
diplomacy-gather information: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Arlo Rumble |
While Hobbs is busy with Twyl, Arlo lifts the top hat off Hobbs' head and hand a little apple slice to Erina.
Twyl |
Twyl is happy to stuff as much apple into himself as the strange little man is willing to part with. His mistress usually kept a close eye on him to make sure he didn't get into trouble, but she either hadn't noticed yet, or did not seem to mind him eating the fruit in this case.
When the strange large-eared green man appears, Twyl looks on with interest. He'd interacted with this type of person in the past, and as they'd always treated him kindly, he was not afraid. His interest spikes when the green man takes his hat off and Twyl notices the small spiny creature underneath... who then proceeds to wave to them.
How exciting! He waves back eagerly and wonders if she'll be his friend. Hoping to make it so, he takes to the air and hovers nearby. Reaching out with the chunk of apple still in his hand, he offers it to her.
GM Blake |
"Oh right," he says when Arlo asks about Kukuha. "you were supposed to meet up with her here. I ferried her out to Kayajima a couple days ago. She decided that she wanted to head out early to spend some time getting familiar with the island’s geography."
He then answers the earlier question. "The weather is reasonably mild. I haven't seen any signs of storms on the horizon. The island has a mountain, so you may need climbing gear. Food and water, maybe. There's no civilization on the island, only the remains of an old one."
Jayma |
Jayma had noticed Twyl's apple munching of course, but she trusted Arlo not to poison her familiar and was thus happy to let Twyl think he was getting away with something.
Once all the introductions are made and the apple has been finished off, Jayma decides to try and quench her thirst. "If you gentlemen don't mind, I think I'll retire to the nearest inn for a quick nip. Perhaps I'll find out something more about our dangerous little island in the process. Come along Twyl!"
She then inquires of some of the locals as to where she might find one of the more salubrious inns in town and heads that way.
Gather Information (Diplomacy): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Azu Azan |
Azu greats the others. Human, male, Garundi, there's not much mystery to the Ranger. A dromeosaur follows Azu closely. Azu nods at the host and then informs the others he's off to find some thieve's tools before he returns to the meeting point.
Erinaceinae |
While Hobbs is busy with Twyl, Arlo lifts the top hat off Hobbs' head and hand a little apple slice to Erina.
Erinacinae reaches out and carefully takes the apple. "Thank you very much."

"That's very nice of you but I already have one. Why don't you keep your piece for yourself."
Hobbs Picklesmith |
Hobbs frowns when Twyl fails to respond to his question. "Hmm...It seems that the addition of the wings has affected his speech center." He pulls out a pipe and fills it with a clear liquid before taking a closer look at the winged ermine. "Or it could be that he just doesn't feel like talking. More experimentation is warranted."
He nods sagely and blows into his pipe, causing a stream of soap bubbles to emerge and float away.
Zelphari Caryarus |
Zelphari seems to be distracted while the conversations go on around him, as he stares intently at the walls.
”Hey, did you notice? On these walls? They are etched with reliefs of ancient warriors. Almost entirely hidden by these modern architecture, but if you look at them from this angle, you can see them. Right?”
Turning to Masuhei with curiosity, he asks, ”I trust these relief has some history for Sakakabe?”
Maximilian Pardus |
Maximilian gives his pack a once over to check that he remembered to bring his climbing kit. Finally confirming that the kit was among his things the rogue gives a sigh of relief.
"Climbing kit check! Good thing I remembered to bring it eh Ruby?Garnet?" the gambler turns to his companions, a fiery leopard and a pretty, purple haired halfling.
Garnet is a hireling with Medicine +7 ad Lore: Hunting +7
Jayma |
Jayma makes a face when Masuhei mentions the possibility of mountain climbing on Kayajima. "Ugh! Really? I'm afraid that hiking up mountains is hardly my forte. This poor frail body of mine was not designed with such activities in mind." You get the feeling that she may be exaggerating for effect, but it isn't far from the truth.
FYI. Jayma has Str 8 and is untrained -1 in Athletics. She'll need help to deal with anything too physical.
She then pouts a little. "Do I really have to carry a heavy climbing kit around with me while we're on the island? How depressing?" She sighs. "Well, if I must I must, but I'm not going to enjoy it."
On the way to the inn she stops into a shop and gets herself a climbing kit.
Twyl |
Twyl is only momentarily disappointed when Erina turns down his admittedly half-chewed apple slice. He quickly recovers though when he realizes that it meant he got to eat it instead, which he promptly did.
When his mistress turns to leave, Twyl looks over his shoulder and making a chirping sound, waves goodbye to his new spiny friend. He had been so distracted by the appearance of Erina that he'd completely ignored the green man on which she was perched. Now that he thought back, Twyl realized that he'd understood some of what the green man had said. How strange, he thought; he couldn't remember that ever happening before. Maybe he'd imagined it.
GM Blake |
"Probably," Masuhei answers Zelphari unhelpfully. He ponders for a moment, then answers. "What I learned back in my school days, the island used to host Sakakabe’s military forces. At some point in our history, the island was abandoned. It wasn’t worth the effort holding an island off the coast, so provincial leadership decided to consolidate forces on the mainland. Not many people make their way out there nowadays. Don’t think there’s much of value, and the silver and fishing industries are booming, so there’s no need to overextend ourselves. That's probably not what you were interested in.
Masuhei must have been one of those Pathfinder more interested in the adventure part than the archeology part.
Once you have finished your supply run, gambling, and attempting to hobnob with the locals, you return to board Masuhei's vessel. The sea is calm. The Auspicious Pearl smoothly cuts the gentle waves. Apart from the occasional squawk of a seabird, the only sounds are the wind and water against the vessel.
While you sail, Musahei tells you, "I believe you’re headed to the fortress, which isn’t too far inland from where I’ll drop you off. At least that’s what Kukuha said when I dropped her off. Should be a pretty straight shot, if I’m not mistaken. This trip will only take a couple of hours."
Zelphari Caryarus |
"No, no, that is quite interesting, Masuhei." He turns back to examine the relief, awed by the history it must have contained over the years.
---
"Don't fret little one," Zelphari turns to Jayma. "I'll do what I can to help." Whether he recognises that she is just being particularly dramatic is unclear, but his offer is sincere and genuine.
He similarly follows Jayma along and purchases a climbing kit (except for the rope which he already possesses) for himself.
GM Blake |
"I retired to Sakakabe to take up my family's oyster farm," Masuhei prattles on as he sails the boat through the calm sea. "Business is booming lately, you know? I miss the adventuring life, sometimes, though. I get an itch to travel the world, meet new people, see new places, but then I remember that I've got employees who count on me. And that I'm not as spry as I once was. And that monsters have sharp claws." He chuckles. "Have you been anywhere exciting?"
The time passes as you listen to Masuhei or tell your own tails to entertain the retired Pathfinder. The island comes into view, and the mountain is hard to miss. As you sail nearer to the shore, you begin to make out the forest that covers the island, and Mountain Kayajima comes into sharper contrast. Finally, Masuhei brings his boat to at a rock pier.
"Here is where we part," he says. "I'll be back to pick you up tonight. You'll join me for a drink and some oyster soup when I get you back to Sakakabe, you know?"
Ruby, Fiery Leopard |
Ruby purrs as she once again has her paws on solid ground. Traveling by boat and being supported by water was not among her favorite things to do.
Maximilian Pardus |
"See you later." Maximilian says as he waves goodbye to Masuhei. Crouching to give Ruby a few pats he continues, "Well, it Looks like we have a timer. Shall we get going?"
Jayma |
Jayma smiles mischievously when Zelphari tries to reassure her. "How very generous of you to offer to carry me up the mountain, my dear Zelphari. But I just don't think that would be very seemly. I'll settle for being pulled up the difficult bits with a rope." She grins at her fellow sorcerer to show that she's pulling his leg.
Once back on dry land, Jayma sighs contentedly. "As much as I like to travel and see the world, I dearly wish there were a faster and easier way to do it than going by boat." She pets her familiar. "Ah, dearest Twyl. If only you were a little bigger; I could put a saddle on you and ride the winds without a worry in the world."
When Maximilian suggests that they get moving, Jayma agrees. "Yes indeed, Maximilian, let's get to the fortress and find Kukuha. The sooner we help her revive those ley lines, the better." Jayma was actually quite interested in finding out more about these ley lines. Her experience with such magical manifestations was minimal, but she'd heard many stories about spellcasters tapping into them to extend the power of their spells. She dearly wanted to experience that phenomenon firsthand.
"Let's make sure to keep an eye out for those dangerous beasts I heard about though. There's nothing like being torn to pieces by wild animals to ruin your whole day." Jayma was actually half-hoping that something would have a go at them on the island. It had been a while since she'd unleashed her full powers and she was getting antsy to pull out all the stops at least once on this mission.
Zelphari Caryarus |
"I'll definitely take you up on that offer, Masuhei. Really enjoyed the Minkaian sake the last time I was here, and definitely looking forward for more!" Zelphari bids the man farewell.
Once he turns around though, the Varisian becomes all serious, grasping his guisarme tight as he stares intently into the forest. He gives Jayma a half-grin though. "Indeed, don't want to miss the oyster and sake..."
Hobbs Picklesmith |
Hobbs hands everyone a vial containing a greenish liquid that smells of vinegar. "I suppose it's time for me pass these out. The effect should last all day so you might as well drink it now. It should provide a modicum of protection against any diseases we might encounter."
He drinks his antiplague and casts a couple of spells before lifting his hat to check on Erinaceinae.
"All set Erinaceinae?"
Hobbs casts false life and longstrider (lvl 2). He has already cast mage armor as part of his daily preparations.

Up the rocky pier and farther inland, a path winds into a stretch of cedar trees. The forest is tranquil, and the path, although partially overgrown with ground foliage, remains clear beneath the dense canopy. The ground consists of packed dirt and pine needles. An occasional rustle of leaves or flapping of wings break the silence. The air smells of rich earth and peat. Here and there you catch sight of wildlife: a colorful bird flits from a branch, a rabbit leaps under a bush.
Maximilian and Zelphari get the sense that you are being followed. They give a shout of warning as the brush rustles from every side of the path. Four massive boars emerge, tusks dripping with saliva.
Before anyone can react, one of the boars charges past Maximilian and rams into Hobbs, seeking the smaller prey. The blow rips through his necromantic life force. One of the other boards charges into Jayma and drives its tusk deep into her abdomen (critical hit). Both boars then back off to prepare for another charge.

For those who think that 1 point of AC is no big deal, I should point out that the two boar strikes against Jayma were just barely crits. 1 extra point on her AC would have made a big difference to Jayma's prospects in this case.
Jayma emits a sharp yelp as the boar rushes out and surprises her. "Eeek!" It quickly turns into a groan as the creature's tusks tear into her stomach. "Ugh!" "Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true!" she moans to herself as she looks down at her bleeding wound.
Fortunately, though deep, the wound is clean and none of her organs seem to be hanging out. Jayma had never been injured this badly in her entire life and the pain involved was far greater than anything she could have imagined. Her mind starts falling into a blubbering pit of despair. "This can't be happening to me. This sort of thing is what happens to others, not to me! Why me? WHY ME?"
Then suddenly, a breeze flows around her and her wound starts closing up; the pain fades away and almost completely dissipates. Jayma straightens up and notices Arlo holding up his holy symbol and casting a spell. She beams him a genuine smile of gratitude. "Dear Arlo, you are a wonder. Thank you for that."
And just as she was preparing herself to pay the first boar back in spades for the effrontery of laying a tusk on her person, another boar comes out of the woods and jams her in the side. "Gurk!" This time, the second blow does not generate the same shocked reaction from Jayma as the first. Her mind was now steeled against the pain and a fiery rage grips her instead. "What in the blazes is going on? Am I some sort of boar punching bag today? I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next!"
Pushing hard on her staff with one hand, she forces herself to stand up straight. She spots her second assailant. "How dare you assault me you hairy hog from hell!" She takes a few steps forward to get the creature within range, but keeps Azu and Zelphari between her and the boars. Spotting a nearby pinecone, she swings a practiced hand and with a "pinecone pummels piggy" sends it rocketing into the boar in question.

Arlo Rumble |
Arlo beams a bright smile at Jayma after her compliment, then winces as she gets gored again. "Please seek safety miss, I'll patch you up when this is over."

Jamaya magically manipulates a pine cone into head of the boar Zelphari just injured. The cone strikes with the force of an entire tree branch falling from dozens of feet above.
The boar in the woods with Ruby bursts out of the brush and then charges back at the fiery cat from behind, carving a gouge in Ruby's hind leg and comes within an inch of severing an artery.
The boar in front of Azu snorts and rushes off only to turn around and gore him in the thigh. Blood sprays across the pine needles (critical hit).
Encounter! Round 2. Bold may act.

Arlo Rumble |
Arlo looks around at the sudden violence all around him. Thankfully he's being spared, but the brunt of the attacks instead falls on his teammates. Considering Jayma looks like she might keel over at any moment, so he strides over to defend her if necessary. He positions himself between her and Red Circle Boar, just in case. He then tears open a fresh roll of bandages and quickly starts plugging the holes left by the boar's tusks.
Stride, then Battle Medicine on Jayma.
Medicine check, DC 20: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
Battle Medicine healing for Jayma: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (1, 5) + 10 = 16
With his final action, he conjures up a Shield spell to protect him from any potential harm. AC 20 until my next turn.
The difficult life of a healer. Do I use my limited Heals, or do I go for my equally limited Battle Medicines? :P
Azu Azan |
Azu grimaces as the boar rends his flesh. "Cleric!" Azu's call is more of a hey-look-at-me than any kind of command or demand. For a moment, Azu contemplates moving into the forest, but Azu suspects the creatures are fast enough to keep charging.
How far away do they move before they turn around and charge? Trying to understand how far they need in a straight line.
