Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Hey Everyone! Thanks for joining the table!!

Some standard things to do before we get started:

  • On slide 2, enter your character information. I'll eventually use this to fill out your chronicle sheets
  • On slide 3, enter your initiative, your perception and throw your token up in the marching order map. Feel free to move your tokens around as you like to set up your marching order
  • Update your profiles with your character sheets or provide a link in your profile to wherever you digitally store your character sheet. The community has already put together some of the character sheets in BB code for us here: CLICK
  • As mentioned, I do ask that everyone make a good faith effort to post at least once per day except of course when life intervenes and this isn't possible. When I see a need, I will bot characters to keep things moving along so if you'd like me to bot your character a certain way, please do include botting instructions with your character profile
  • Finally, please go ahead and introduce your characters to each other in the gameplay thread anytime and feel free to RP if the inspiration strikes you

I'll work on a bit of prep and look to kick off within a few days (assuming everyone else is ready as well)!!

D'oh! I always forget to flip that switch! Thanks for the heads up. You should now have access to edit the slides!

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Oh by the way, per SFS rules, pregens have boon slots but pregens don't come with boons unless something uniquely special comes up.

HOWEVER, promotional boon slots also apply! So if anyone has a t-shirt re-roll or other promotional boons to slot, please mention it either on slide 2 or on your character profile.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Alrighty, my prep is complete! I'll look to officially kick things off within the next 24 hours!

  • Scottybobotti/Obozaya: Looks like you've still got Quonx's character sheeting in your character profile. Perhaps a copy & paste error?
  • Joseph Martin 681: When you have a moment, please input your details on slides 2 & 3
  • Everyone: Also please discuss/identify which starship role you'll default to.

I just never changed it from the time I played Quonx. Do I need to put Obozaya's info in? I changed my tag line. I'm using the pdf file for her stats.

Gotcha! Throwing it in would make things a tad more convenient but nope, it's not needed. Thanks!

When it comes to Starhip Velloro skills do not give a lot of opportunities.

He can be 5 round captain (Intimidate +9 - so one demand from each crew member ;)) a Gunner +6 and Chief Mate (Acrobatics +9, athletics +6)

Hmm, Navasi's only somewhat serviceable in a number of roles:

Chief Mate (Acrobatics +9, Athletics +7) Captain (Bluff +9, Diplomacy +9)
Science Officer (Computers +9 (4 ranks))
    Pilot (Piloting +9 (4 ranks))
    Gunnery (Piloting 4 ranks+2 DEX)

Alrighty, kicking things off in the gameplay thread!

As for the starship roles, from what I can tell, it appears Iseph is the only character with engineering skills.

@GM bigboom, Thanks for the writeup for Obozaya. It made it extremely easy to put her stats into my profile.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Scottybobotti: Actually, I can't take credit for this one. It was put together by the PbP community. Take a look here for all of the other pregens in BB code. But I agree! It's super helpful!!
    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B3wrjlOOra6rLWJ3X1dqU0RJdzQ?resourc ekey=0-Vp3Ry9UYjpzNxz5gTlAlaw

A couple quick clarifications for slide 2:

  • cmlobue & Joseph Martin 681: For the "character name" column, instead of entering your pregen's name, please enter the name of your SFS character that will receive the chronicle. So for cmlobue, that will be character 312045-704 and for Joseph Martin 681, that will be character 73425-703. If your characters don't yet have names, then that's fine - you can fill this in later or I can leave the character names blank on the chronicle which you can fill in later. Either way works!
  • Joseph Martin 681: I noticed that the character 73425-703 you entered is level 5 (mechanic 4 / operative 1). Because this scenario requires playing level 4 pregens, the chronicle sheet can be applied only to characters that are level 4 or below. If your society character 73425-703 is indeed level 5, you'll have to switch to a different, lower level character.

Ah... I thought the rule was level 4 or higher. You can't assign it to a character under the level range for the adventure... is this a special rule for this adventure?

Let me know for sure and I can change everything if needed.

    Dataphiles

    Male NG Ysoki Technomancer 4 | SP 20/20 HP 22/22 | RP 6/6 | EAC 17; KAC 17 | Fort +1; Ref +4; Will +4 | Init: +3 | Perc: +4, SM: +0 | Speed 40 ft. | Spells: 2nd - 1/3, 1st - 2/4 | Active conditions: None.

In Starfinder Society, each chronicle sheet has a range of levels they can be assigned to. I believe this scenario is 3-4. You can give it to a character in that level range, or to a character below the range - but they will not benefit from it in any way until they reach the minimum level, so if you give it to a level 1 or 2, it will sit there until they hit level 3.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

    Dwinite is mostly correct.

And on behalf of Paizo, I apologize for the confusion around how to apply chronicles earned from playing pregens. I'll try my best to clarify....

The rules are in the online "Starfinder Society Guide to Organized Play" located here:
    https://organizedplayfoundation.org/Lorespire/Starfinder-Society-Guide-to-O rganized-Play

The specific rules around pregens are located in these two sections:

  • Before the Adventure: https://organizedplayfoundation.org/Lorespire/sfsguide._.Player-Basics#Befo re_the_Adventure
  • Applying Credit: https://organizedplayfoundation.org/Lorespire/sfsguide._.Player-Basics#Appl ying_Credit

With these rules as applied to our game:

  • The relevant rule stated is: "If you choose a pregenerated character, you must also choose an existing character of a lower level, a first level character, or a brand new character to assign credit to."
  • In this game, we're playing level 4 pregens. Technically, the chronicle sheets received from me can be applied to level 1, level 2 or level 3 characters only
  • The next rule that is relevant to us is: "Pregen Chronicles assigned to a brand new or 1st level characters can be applied immediately to the character at 1st level, or held until the level of the pregen. Chronicles assigned to characters of a level higher than 1st level, must be held to the level of the Pregen."
  • So when your character (which is currently level 1, level 2 or level 3) reaches level 4 (the level of the pregen you're playing), then you should apply the chronicle from this game to that character. Before your character hits level 4, you basically keep the chronicle from this game "on hold" waiting for the day your character hits level 4
  • One exception to this "on hold until your character hits level 4" rule is you can have this chronicle applied to your character immediately if your character is level 1 or a brand new character. In this case, the chronicle's credit reward gets reduced to 720 credits but you can immediately apply the chronicle without having to wait for your character to hit level 4. (I'll also tell you now because it doesn't hurt anything: If you hold this game's chronicle until your charater hits level 4, your character will earn 1530 credits which is presumably a typical reward for a level 3-4 chronicle.)
  • This begs the question, "Why can't I apply the chronicle from playing a pregen to a character that is the same level as the pregen?" The answer is written either in the forums or a Paizo blog somewhere that I can't find but is this: If you have a character that is the same level as the pregen, then you should play your character, not the pregen
  • HOWEVER, this scenario REQUIRES us to play pregens and we're not allowed to play our own society characters (same as in the RPG day skittermander games). So I think there's an exception in this case that allows us to apply chronicles to characters that are the same level as the pregen because we're not allowed to actually play our own characters. Again, I think this was stated somewhere but I can't find it. So my understanding is that players may designate a level 4 character to receive this game's chronicle

TLDR: The characters that you (the players) specify on slide 2 to receive the chronicle from this game can be either level 1, level 2, level 3 or level 4. You then hold the chronicle and apply the chronicle when your character hits level 4. But if your character is level 1, then you can elect to have the chronicle applied to your character immediately with a reduced cash reward.

Can we clone Iseph? He is our best pilot and engineer. Dwinite might need to hot swap for repairs, but he would be working off his good Int only.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Not sure what is meant by cloning Iseph.

But from what I can tell, it seems to me the best bet is:

  • Navasi as pilot
  • Iseph as engineer
  • Dwinite as science officer
  • Obozaya and Velloro as gunners

Heh. We can download Iseoh into the main computer so he can pilot and be the engineer! :)

Positions sound good to me. Although Navasi as pilot means she can't be the best darn captain ever...

If you would ask me I was certain that there is 6 of us ;) Darn it, I must have been half asleep ;)

With regards to positions keep in mind that they can be changed, I saw combats where it added some interesting dynamics. Especially that if the shields are intact engineer can be more useful being a pilot or even shooting ;) When there is time to patch systems and restore shields then the engineer is needed.

The thing is that the swapping of roles need to happen at the beginning of the round.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Yep, it is certainly true that roles can be swapped around at the beginning of the round. This is kind of tricky to pull off in PbP while also keeping combat moving at a decent pace.

My general take on starship combat via PbP is that I'm fine with posts and rolls falling slightly out of order for the sake of keeping things progressing - few things worse in Starfinder than one full week passing by and only a single round of starship combat is completed!

As mentioned in my GM profile, for starship combat, I'll usually ask everyone to post their actions and their rolls all in one go. If anyone is inclined, feel free to spoiler your dice rolls but I'll leave that up to individuals to do so or not. After everyone has posted, I'll sort everything into the engineering, helm and gunnery phases. So as a part of that time period when the round is open for everyone to post, feel free to swap around to different roles even if some other party members have already posted up their actions and rolls.

My aim is to keep things moving and fun while trying not to lose too much of the encounter's challenge - all within the constraints of this PbP medium.

On a side note, unless the party has really bad luck with rolls, I don't think you'll encounter much trouble with this particular starship combat encounter.

My idea was Navasi as captain, Iseph #1 at pilot, Iseph #2 in engineering.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Ah, so you mean we "make up" an Iseph #2 for the starship encounter? I don't believe that is allowed unless there is some particular Society rule around this?

If there is, please do let me know as that would be immensely helpful and something I'll have to note down for future games!

Yes, second Iseph stows away and randomly does work.

There are scenarios that grant an NPC for starship combat if the party has fewer than 6 people, but we can't slot them here.

Starship Actions ; Live Exploration Extreme!

Oh hey, you're right, thank you! I didn't realize point weapons cannot fire beyond that first increment. Welp, nevermind the shield damage... we'll retcon that out. I'll also assume Iseph diverted power to weapons instead of shields.

Hmmmm... And that leaves these goblin ships even more impotent than I realized. The inability to move AND shoot in a single round renders them pretty harmless unless there is some other strategy I'm missing. I think these critters will just be trying to force flybys...

If the party manages to disable another ship and take no significant damage, I'll probably call it.

Sounds like you can use some of the rolls from this game over in that game! ;-P

This scenario was written during the early days of Starfinder. So I'm guessing (but I don't really know) this starship encounter was maybe designed with balance that errs in the players' favor? Aside from suffering really bad dice rolls, I don't believe this 1-00 scenario starship encounter presents too much of a challenge to players.

But with Into the Veskarium being a season 3 scenario, starship encounters have been re-balanced to provide a bigger challenge, mayhaps?

Just in case there is any confusion, I'm going to sum up a few major plot points because they may have gotten a bit lost in the various details.

  • Luwazi originally hired you to go to Salvation's End to scout around and determine either a) it is worthless or b) there is something of interest making it worth future investigation
  • Before going to Salvation's End, you went to a prison to meet Livewire who was a part of an illegal salvage crew that had already visited Salvation's End. She revealed to you that they detected a strong signal emitting from underneath the surface and that "something" is down there
  • Luwazi confirmed that if this is true, then there might be something worthwhile on Salvation's End after all
  • After your space combat concluded, you also detected a strong signal coming from Salvation's End. So you landed and headed in the direction of that signal, which led you to this hanger which the Archer crashed into
  • Now, you've discovered that the source of the signal is coming from down below and hopefully this elevator with the incomprehensible alien controls will lead you closer to that signal's source

Do let me know if this helps clear up any confusion or if this summary wasn't necessary because the above was already clear.

Thanks and I appreciate the feedback!!

However, all downtime activities (including dayjobs) are now to be recorded by players rather than GMs on their own chronicles. So for the dayjob rolls, please go ahead and write in the amount yourselves: https://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo6shoe?Starfinder-Society-Year-4-Ru le-Changes

Great game folks, one of the best Obozayas that I played with so good job with that!

the nice dynamic within the team, good banter!

Chronicle is downloaded and looks good!

Unfortunately I played the duskmire record game. But good luck with it, I will keep an eye open for other of your games Bigboom!

Glad you enjoyed it! But yah, now that you mention it, I should have included a little "dun Dun DUNNNN!!!" when it was revealed that Borgor and Bago are the same - just to emphasize it a bit. hehehe

I've played 1-20 already, but thanks for the invite. I really enjoyed the way your ran the game GM bigboom. The Youtube videos were a nice touch. I especially liked the Rush Hour clip. Love that movie!

Thanks for the complement on running Obozaya. She isn't a very hard character to RP for sure.

@Supersuperlative/Navasi as soon as you confirm your chronicle is okay, I'll report the game to Paizo and archive this game.

Please let me know once you've had a chance. Thank you!
