So in pbp problem-solving situations as this, I think sometimes a simple vote is helpful. I see 3 ideas at the moment, feel free to add.

1. One goes in, finds out if there is a disrobing room for storing arms/armor, and scouts in general.

edit: Mal and Tib are tied with the highest Persuasion mods. Mal alone has deception, with expertise.

These are powerful arguments for Mal to scout it out first.

Well, I say we take the appropriate route for our current occupation. If a few heads get knocked then I say perhaps they shouldn't have been in such a questionable establishment to begin with. Surprise is our ally, and speed its lover. I'm not against a scout, however, a new face may be enough cause for alarm in itself.

Tibs votes for 2. If it ties between 1 and 2, he would change to 1.

With none so keen to take the initiative, you decide to wait until after hours to pinch one of the employees in the shadows.

Passing the time (About 3 hours), one might find a makeshift dinner in the right combination of street vendors (crispy lizards, roast whole corn on the cob, some kind of thin potato pancake with savory dipping sauces). Others could see to some entertainment in the form of newspapers (the big breaking story of the day is your failed coup), back-alley Baldur's Bones, or various ladies of the night (they don't seem to shy away at the sight of a badge).

Baldur's Gate of course was known for its clockwork fog, but it wasn't until the gaslighters made their rounds that you realized how dense it was becoming this night. Only a handful of the brightest stars could pierce the gray veil overhead.

*Squeeeeek Bang* Finally theres some stirring at the entrance as the gate swings closed, and you see an undecipherable tortle woman and a much too handsome man lock the gate behind them. After murmuring some pleasant farewells, they split up in different directions. (Tortle east, Human west)

There doesn't seem to be any activity inside, and no lights are on.

Where are you watching from? Right there at the gate, across the street, a block down around the corner? Farther than right at gate roll perception.

Map is in my DiA: Ch1 tracker under the stats. Might take a sec to load. Its the 15' wide region inside the courtyard wall. Plenty of shrubberies (elderberry) to hide in...there's also some benches and 3 fountains (the starred circles). You didn't see any traps/alarms but then again you can't see inside the main building from out there.

Insight: 1d20 ⇒ 13

The keymaster saunters along, seemingly oblivious he's being followed. The encroach of the night's fog greatly aids the party's attempts at anonymity, enabling them to stand right on the edge of sight and morph between themselves and vague humanoid forms with a few soft steps.

While the cacaphonous music of armor played on, Grim and the party weren't the only ones armed and armored out. No, the streets weren't crowded, but neither were they dead...the popular taverns were just getting started after all. And while many of the yellow granite structures had 3 or 4 stories above its ground level, tenents of those residences taking in the night from their balconies saw only an illuminated extension of the river Chionthar winding through the streets.

Donal made his move, hopping a little 3 feet wall to cross a small park, quickly closing the gap on his quarry a block over. It was easy to keep a lock on him, as the keymaster was whistling his own little spin on the dwarven pub classic Skippin' Twosies with an Orc's Entrails. In a short time, the Tormtar believed he was actually ahead in perfect position...

Meanwhile, Gorn was also setting up to pounce. He padded the opposite side of the cobbled road at a slightly accelerated pace, waiting for the keymaster to cross one of the many dark alleys separating the taller buildings. But suddenly, he was gone.

Gorn you have a 50% guess which alley the human just ducked into and are coming into it from one direction. Donal knows which alley the human is in and is coming from the other direction. Gorn, if you roll high on your 50% you will be in perfect position to pinch him from the other side in a coordinated way.

Donal:
The whistling stops, abruptly replaced by some rustling and sucking sounds.

What kind of light do you all have? The alley is much darker than the gaslit street.

"Aiee!" the supposed assassin shrieks, sounding much more like a little girl than a deadly slayer as his lips are forcefully pulled from the lips of the keymaster. Both of their thin shirts were stylish and halfway undone, and as far as you could tell, both wholly unarmed and unarmored.

Athletics: 1d20 ⇒ 1

The man falls into Donal's bearhug as if he always belonged there, completely at his mercy.

"Zora! Stop eet! You let heem go! Heeelp!" the keymaster shouts in a thick Chessentan accent, picking up a broken clay jug from the dunes of detritus making their incursion into the alley, wielding it menacingly. But it certainly appeared far less menacing than he intended...

Well played... you think him an innocent or one of the cult?

AvernusArt 2Grid

Hiding in the courtyard shrubbery affords the halfling a casual watchpost much more comfortable than the harsh city streets, but the babbling fountains muffle the courtyard and the only sounds Mal can really hear come from his imagination. The white marble of the benches and fountains glow with that soft, almost electric, ambience from the moonlight...the light seems to multiply and carry even further in the fog, eventually mixing with the orange glow of the gaslights across the shadow of the 10ft perimeter wall. The white nymphs continue to pour and pour their waters, uselessly. If there were any murderers here, they were passing up a great opportunity to not only kill Mal, but their own boredom. The occasional whiff of a pleasant oil or perfume as the wind can't make up its mind the only thing breaking up the monotony.

------

Elsewhere Donal and Grim debated the bathhouse employee's involvement. The man certainly had a fighter's physique, but it was hard to imagine the same person wielding that broken clay jar in the dark alley could carve up an innocent in the way that's been described. But then again, various magical ailments such as lycanthropy were known to plague man with sinister alter egos...driving them to do the most unexpected of things. As the lovers' footsteps melded into the night, an answer to such things was just as elusive.

Hearing no further hue and cry from Donal as the quarry comes bounding in his direction, Gorn assumes that Donal didn't want a chase for a good reason, and sees no profit in breaking an empty vessel.

"Probably an innocent," Gorn takes up Grim's question as he regroups. "The cult probably has their own way in and out, and may very well conduct their activities during business hours, leaving the mundane locking and unlocking of doors to unsuspecting employees. Fewer loose ends that way."

Myl knows that sneaking and ambushing are not her strength, so she lets the more light-footed members of her crew take the initiative on the ambush.

Moving slowly and trying to make as little noise as possible, she is delighted to see the results of Donal's foray were positive.

"Well in that case let's 'casually' work our way over and let ourselves in".

Given all the time spent waiting, can that count as a short rest?

AvernusArt 2Grid

Sure, short rest somewhere in the wait between shopping and midnight is reasonable.

The bathhouse gate hinge squirted out a tiny squeak as it flung open, though it wasn't loud enough to turn the heads of any fellow travellers of the night. Of course the fog was also a boon, allowing the party to enter the courtyard seemingly without notice.

The main building here can be entered by the front door on east side or windows I suppose. All shut at the moment.

Instead of resting, as normal people might do, Gorn spent an hour's time digging through rubbish piles. Finding a cast off pink plush dinosaur and a broken magnifying glass in the shape of a cucumber, he trades these items for 2 freshly caught racoons and 5 ounces of black mustard. Frying the animals in a sauté of pigweed oil, he drizzles them with crushed peppers and minced ginger.

He quickly devours one of the greasy products, and keeps the other in an oiled sack.

For one hour's work I can re-make mah snaX.

"I can cover the back," Gorn rumbles, having no problem being split up. "I can your back-door man. Donal, since you probably have more experience in this sort of thing, do you want me to go in hard or soft? I can do anything you like back there. Just tell me how you normally operate in the back door and I'll follow your lead."
