The Silverscale Tournament (Round One/Two)
Boos echo around the crowd as the old man, who quickly proves to become quite unpopular, sermonizes about a "god" that is not really worshipped around here - several of the teams throw down their poles to express their discontent, one team even accidentally kicks over their own net to do so, loosing the fish back into the water. (Success). He further demonstrates by calling upon the elements! (Ithuriel - please roll a Counteract, Spell Attack, or Tradition check to Catch Fish!)
Mandoo acts fast and shoots down a preposterously large Tiger Shark that had snapped two of Deka's fishing lines - she helps him reel it in and the crowd goes absolutely wild, soon forgetting heckling the old man. (Bonus Angler Points ((see below))!)

Mandoo's aim is true and his arrow hits home. The dying shark does not go down easily though and in its death throes threatens to break Mandoo's fishing line as well as the rest of Deka's poles. Not wanting to lose the shark, Mandoo hands the line to Deka and jumps into the water after his catch. He grabs the thrashing creature with one arm to hold it still and lifting it partially out of the water, pounds it with his fist until it finally expires and is still. He then carefully untangles it from Deka's lines to avoid damaging them further.
With the shark's carcas flung over one shoulder, Mandoo climbs back onto the shore and holds it up for all to see. He grins broadly at Deka. "I guess we're even now." He then returns to his team's fishing spot and goes back to getting his pole ready. He's having some trouble figuring out how the reel works; the line doesn't seem to want to run smoothly. "Hmmm. Mandoo eventually figures out how to make the reel work properly and after a few abortive attempts to cast further than a few feet, watches to see how Demed and Deka do it. Analyzing the fishers' technique, he turns back to his team. "I see how it works it now. It isn't all that different from shooting an arrow. You hold the reel still until you cast the pole forward and then release it at the top of the arc."
Cutting a little bait from the tail of the shark he just caught, he puts it on the hook and prepares to cast. Mandoo goes through the motions and reads off the steps in his mind as he does so. "One, hold the reel still. Two, bring the pole back. Three, swing it forward in a big arc. Four, release the reel at the top of the arc." Almost like magic, the baited hook flies out some sixty feet and plops in the water. "Yeah! Now that's what I call fishing."
He slowly reels in the bait, twitching the line along the way to make it look alive, and...
Catch Fish w/ Fishing Tackle (Survival + bonus) vs DC 14: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 1 = 25
...almost instantly, the line goes tight as something big bites hard on the bait. "Wooo hoo! Got one." As he reels in his big catch, he calls out to Demed. "Yo, Demed! I can see why you do this now. It's a lot of fun." When the fish is close enough, Mandoo uses the net to haul it out of the water and holds it up for all to see. To his companions, he says, "If nothing else, at least we'll eat well tonight, my friends."

Two rounds in one post, lets go.
It seems as though that situation has been taken care of... Time to focus on my own efforts. Seeing that the chum seems to be attracting shadows beneath the water's surface, Masei works to deploy her net cautiously around the active area before quickly drawing out as many fish as possible.
Stealth to deploy the net without alerting fish: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Athletics to retrieve the net quickly: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Hero Point'ing the Athletics because that was a natural 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
After some difficulty, Masei manages to make some headway with the net before getting it tangled, causing some of the more alert fish to flee before they could be pulled in. There has to be a better means of doing this. This method seems both indirect and ineffective.

"Luck" strikes again!
At nearly the same moment, Deka's unbroken poles are snatched away by two different errant sharks - smaller and faster than the one Mandoo subdued - and before anyone can react, attached to the toothy fish, the poles are towed from their secured spots, across the surface of the water, through a small wave swell, and PLUNK sunk into the water, gone from sight.
Deka scrambles here, looking at her last two poles, cracked and broken, the look of hopelessness crossing her face, and looking to cry in frustration, her usual humor instantly drained...

Who Dis |

...and so too with her brother, a strange look of seriousness crossing over his face, as he peers first upon his sister crumpled on the ground in her excellent fishing spot, his usual joking demeanor subdued.
He looks at his own "back-up" fishing pole (that has been lying with his other effects unused the whole tourney so far!), then over at the PCs, clearly weighing the options in his mind with some trepidation!

![]() |

Mandoo looks over at Deka and her broken poles and feels a little sorry for her. Unfortunately, his skills do not include the ability to quickly repair such things as fishing poles, and even if they did, he sees no real reason to help her. After all, broken poles and snapped lines were an occupational hazard of fishing and Deka was still one of their strongest competitors in this tournament. No doubt she would come up with a solution to her problems on her own, or maybe her brother would give up his spare rod to help her.
Mandoo turns back to his own still functioning pole and after applying more bait to the hook, once again goes through the same motions of casting and reeling in that had just worked so well for him...
I don't see the results of Mandoo's Round 2 Catch Fish attempt. I suspect it slipped through the cracks in the barrage of posts.
The following is Mandoo's Round 3 action. It is a second attempt at catching fish with his pole, and thus includes the -2 penalty for the repeated use of his Survival skill.
Catch Fish w/ Fishing Tackle (Survival + bonus - penalty) vs DC 14: 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 - 2 = 22
...and like clockwork, another fish grabs at the bait and is hooked. He whoops and reels it in, but then notices that the new fish is somewhat smaller than the last one. It appears that the little devils were starting to get wise to Mandoo's use of the pole and he suspects that his luck with it will not hold for much longer.
Since it appears that Round 4 actions are also being accepted, here goes Mandoo's
Deciding that the potential returns on his continued use of the pole would be limited, he switches tactics. He was beginning to get bored with that approach anyway. He puts his pole down for one of his teammates to use, and picks up his net instead. "Very well, let's see how well this thing works."
Not having witnessed Masei's more subtle use of the net, Mandoo is not exactly sure what to do with it. He thinks about it for a few seconds and comes up with his own approach. Holding a corner of the net in each hand and letting it hang down to the ground before him, he goes stand on a rock overlooking the water. He waits patiently for a large fish to appear within diving distance and then launches himself at it while spreading his hands wide to extend the net...
Catch Fish w/ Net (Athletics) vs DC 14: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
...and is extremely surprised by how effective this method is. The net breaks the water just above the fish and Mandoo's momentum causes it to wrap tightly around the squirming creature. When he drags the trapped fish back to the shore, he realizes that he has in fact caught two large fish with the net. Talk about beginner's luck!

...he walks over instead to check the Scroeboard, and makes a face!...

If you'll allow me to, Sense Motive on Demed's reaction to seeing his sister's poles snap. Specifically trying to figure out if he looks like he may have expected it to happen, as this feels oddly targeted for a series of random shark attacks. If I've already blown my chance to sense motive, ignore the roll. (As for the "seizing victory" bit, I mentioned it in the original post due to tangling up the net on accident.)
I'm laughing much harder than I thought I would, seems like Paizo's getting me back for those early 20's lol
Masei is preparing the net for a second go as she hears the -SNAP!- from across the pier. Seeing Deka in distress, she stops what she's doing without hesitation, weighing the nets down briefly before grabbing her tackle and moving out. Seeing an unattended fishing pole en-route to Deka (Demed's extra pole), she grabs that as well on the way over (while Demed is distracted with the scoreboard, without realizing its one of his).
Thievery to grab the fishing pole without drawing much attention, feel free to use this as my round 4 roll or if this is an interim event, just use it for this segment: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
"Deka, use these. You assisted my acquaintance earlier, and I am not one who simply forgets unpaid debts. I desire victory through my own merits, and will not accept victory over an opponent crippled by no fault of their own." Masei's voice carries a bit of subtle disdain when referring to "unpaid debts", but does not otherwise convey strong emotion as she begins to arrange the replacement pole(s). "If you feel you owe me for this after the tournament, you can show me how to make a pole like yours while you get it fixed."
If possible and allowed to be Deka, Masei would not be against staking this site out. The propensity for Sharks to appear here seems more than a random coincidence at this point, and I'd be willing to stake the area out with Perception before Sudden Charging any sharks that appear, or simply Javelin'ing them.
EDIt:If Demed spots me taking his pole and takes offense, I will get into an argument with him on the way to Deka.

With his trained eye for such things, Mandoo watches Masei's rather sad attempt to steal Demed's pole and rolls his eyes. Did she really think he wouldn't notice it missing? Now, on top of being way behind in the tournament, they had a pissed-off Demed to deal with.
He considers trying to calm Demed down and maybe suggest that he lend his sister his second pole, but his previous experiences in trying to pacify angry people had usually resulted in the exact opposite effect, so he decides to let someone else make the attempt if they so desire. After all, an angry Demed could be a distracted Demed that caught fewer fish.
Mandoo is +0 and untrained in Diplomacy or any of the CHA skills. The odds of him succeeding at a DC 15 Make an Impression followed by a DC 14 Request are <calculating> about 10%. The odds of critically failing one or both of those rolls (thus worsening Demed's attitude even further) is about 40%. The odds aren't there for the attempt.
Still, he did have a soft spot for Deka, and since they were probably going to lose the tournament to Demed anyway, Mandoo could at least try to salvage his relationship with the vivacious woman and maybe molify Demed in the process.
Mandoo reaches down and picks up the pole and fishing tackle he'd put down earlier. He hands it over to her. "Use this Deka. Doesn't look like we're going to beat your brother anyway, so if you can give him a run for his money with it, go for it." He beams her a smile and adds, "I guess you owe me now. I'll collect from you later when we have dinner together."
Turning back to his teammates, he calls out. "Let's put our backs in it now. Demed has a lot more fish than us right now and if we don't pick up the pace, we're going to lose this tournament to him."

Dinardin stops his efforts at fishing and turns to "fishing of men". He walks over to Demed and speaks low. "Demed. Victory in a fishing tournament is a fine thing. A fun thing. lol I'm already out of hero points GM; anyways, assume my interaction with Deka was handled as initially typed out, but I had the following exchange with Demed before going to assist Deka.
Demed whirls on Masei.
"Of course you would try and take my pole - I have caught many more fish than you, and you are jealous!"
"Ah, this is a surprise. I had assumed this pole belonged to some other competitor whom had forfeit the competition, yet it belongs to you? My apologies. I would have asked had I known its owner."
Masei glances at the rest of Demed's spot, and seeing his intact setup and other pole, continues. "You seem to be performing adequately with your own pole. This pole must be some sort of backup, correct? Then surely you would be willing to part with it to help your, "'Sis". After all, this pole was brought here in case of an emergency, and an emergency has occurred. I was already on my way to donate my fishing tackle to Deka. If you'd rather keep at the competition, I can bring your pole to her to save you a trip, or, if you'd prefer, you can come with me to donate your pole in person."
Masei is not concerned with material possessions or winning this competition, so it has not occurred to her that this would be a controversial decision. Deka is in need of tools to compete in this competition, and this is a competition that lists Solidarity as one of its tenets, so she is operating under the assumption that a local would be willing to assist another local, especially a family member, without need for coaxing. If Demed objects to this, Masei will escalate this exchange.

Demed engages with Dinardin, opens up a little in fact - of course never taking his eye off his own fishing line, nor his foot off his precious tackle box "Well, my sister is no pearl but... she is my only sister. But I must say: Look at how she sulks! What kind of big brother would I be if I always solved her problems for her? How will she learn to grow if we do not give her the space to better herself. You may think I am mean, but I say if you love someone, you allow them to solve their own problems. She needs to get up off her butt and stop complaining!"
Perhaps a little too far with the "tough love" idea, it is evident that Demed cares for his sister greatly, and is in some sense "coming from a good place" - that said, having expressed his viewpoint, he isn't 100% convinced himself as it stands...
...
""Ah, this is a surprise. I had assumed this pole belonged to some other competitor whom had forfeit the competition, yet it belongs to you? My apologies. I would have asked had I known its owner."
Masei - it is possible you fool Demed into thinking the whole thing was a misunderstanding (and reversing the negative shift in attitude from the failed theft) - at your option, you may attempt a DC 15 check to Lie, knowing that a failure here will cause his attitude to shift even further negatively!
...
There is a strange glow coming from one of the end of Demed's lines...
Mandoo and Masei, you may open the next spoiler below too!
The same color glow as was coming from his tackle box earlier!
If you can see the glow, you are welcome to make a Recall Knowledge check using any of the magical tradition skills in which you are trained (Arcana, Nature, Occultism, and Religion) to try and figure out what is going on!

Still very upset, Deka takes the pole offered to her, but sets it down - you get a sense that her hopelessness at making a good show of herself by exhibiting her skill at fishing is currently overpowering even her competitive spirit.

Masei definitely takes notice, figuring it must be some sort of fishing aid, but can't figure anything more precise. Considering the tournament seemed to allow for magic, it's hardly something to concern herself with at this point, but she'll certainly keep it in mind and bring it up to anyone who missed it for clarification after this discussion. Also, be sure to check Discussion for context as to Masei's intentions here.
Masei quietly holds a breath as the nature of the confrontation begins to dawn on her. She places her tackle box down carefully before turning to face Demed directly."I find your lack of solidarity troubling, as one who claims to have won this tournament twice before. Solidarity is one of the virtues this tournament was supposed to extol, was it not? Perhaps the word means something different to the people of Vidrian than it does to I. Where I come from, a lack of solidarity resulted in the collapse of a millennia-old civilization. Hm... Perhaps that was what your people used to shake off Chelish rule?"
The giantess crosses her arms as she looks down her nose at Demed, making sure to emphasize the difference in their stature. "I had assumed that a champion of Solidarity would be willing- no, eager even- to assist a competitor that had fallen on tough times through no fault of their own. But, if you would rather insist that a starving man learn to fish by his own hand than feed him the trout you hold, then you are weaker than I had thought. I will restate my offer: Come with me to aid your "'Sis" yourself, or allow me to aid her in your stead. If you choose neither, you choose to leave your countrymen to languish in their time of need."

Mandoo is a little disappointed in Deka. He thought she had a stronger spirit than all that. She wasn't going to be any sort of fun companion for dinner tonight if she didn't get her head back into the game. Feeling that there's little to lose at this point, he tries to lift her mood. "Come on Deka, don't be like that. This is only a temporary setback. You're better than this. Now pick up that rod and start kicking your brother's insufferable butt or you'll never hear the end of it."
I guess I'll play this as a Request given that Deka is already Helpful to Mandoo.
Action: Request
Diplomacy (Request): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Man! The whole Mandoo-Deka relationship thing is clearly something the dice gods want very badly to happen.
He glances over at Demed and...
Action: Seek
Perception (Seek): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
...once again notices the same green glow he'd seen earlier, except that now it was coming from the end of one of Demed's lines. Hoping to throw Deka's brother off his game, Mandoo says loudly enough for the crowd to hear, "Hey Demed! What's that green glow on the end of your line? You wouldn't be cheating by any chance? That would explain all the fish you're catching though. Without your little magic trick you probably couldn't catch a single one."
I guess I'll try for a Demoralize here as there's no real downside.
Action: Demoralize
Intimidation (Demoralize): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Dice gods still on Mandoo's side it appears... but for how much longer?
Turning to Deka, he asks, "Do you know what that strange glow is that your brother is using, Deka? Some sort of magical fish magnet or something?"

Dinardin sees things about to get serious between Masei and Demed and starts to play peacemaker. "Gentlemen, this is only supposed to be a friendly..."
and then Mandoo starts yelling about a magical light. Exchanging glances with Masei, Dinardin looks down into the water to see what Mandoo is talking about.
Perception +3

Who Dis |

Demed just laughs in Masei's face "You are going to tell me about my own people and culture? That is rich!" He turns in disgust away from the presumptuous outsider... (Critical Failure to Request > Attitude shifts negatively again!)
...and facing Mandoo's calling him out now, cowers a bit "It is just something I use to catch the fish - uh - a little glow worm on the hook!"... (Success to Coerce)
He is lying about the "glow worm"!
...Backing away from the party - as by some karmic force - he stumbles accidentally over the dock and plunges into the shallow water below!...

The Rabble |

Meanwhile, on the other side of the dock, Deka screams!
"A Giant Crab! Help me!!!"
Although she only sees the one, two Giant Crabs - one on either side of the dock - pop up from the shallow water, click their menacing claws, and immediately attack!
We transition to Encounter Mode now...

Mandoo's reflexes are good, but not good enough to avoid the attack of the large crab that rears suddenly out of the water before him. "Argh! What class of chthonic creature is this?"
Action 1 (◆): Recall Knowledge using Nature vs Black Crab
Recall Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
But Mandoo's limited knowledge of carcinology does not provide him with any answers.
Feeling somewhat restricted by the crab's claw hold on him, Mandoo attempts to pry it apart and slip out of its grasp.
Action 2 (◆): Escape
Athletics (Escape): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
It is now the turn of Mandoo's physical abilities to fail him as he's unable to find purchase on the slimy creature's carapace. "Blast it! I am stuck fast."
"Let's see just how tough you are, ugly"," he thinks as he balls up his fists and unleaches a flurry of punches against the softer-looking face bits of the creature.
Action 3 (◆): Strike (Fist) + Flurry of Blows, Powerful Fist vs Black Crab
Fist 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Crab Attack! (Round One, Continued)
Stuck fast, Mandoo struggles against the immense pincer, but is unable to escape or find purchase (Two misses - Escape adds to Multiple Attack Penalty!)
The second crab assaults the other side of the dock - and thrusts a clasping claw at Ithuriel, who up until now, had been minding his own business!

Masei briefly considers yelling a comment to Demed about returning to their discussion after resolving the crab situation, but realizes he likely wouldn't hear it anyways. Hearing Mandoo's exclamation, Masei gives a quick response as she draws forth her massive blade, "Does what kind of creature they are matter to you? Whatever they are, they want you and the others here dead. That should be enough for us!"
Masei takes a moment to raise her scythe skyward, briefly turning her attention to Deka and any other competitors in the area before bellowing, "PEOPLE OF VIDRIAN, keep an eye on the shore! Two fishermen are being attacked by beasts at this pier, others beasts may yet exist!
Having issued her warning, the giantess lowers her scythe and takes a deep breath before breaking into a sprint. Upon seeing Ithuriel with a claw around his leg, Masei quickly shifts priority from Demed to the elderly. He seems to be doing an adequate job keeping this one distracted. However, his life is finite, and easily terminated by the look of it. It is the logical choice to ensure his safety first. As Masei steps foot off the dock, she thrusts her scythe into the ground, using it as a lever to quickly pivot direction and slide in behind Ithuriel's assailant before making a sweeping strike at the target.
◆)Ready a Weapon (Scythe)
◆◆)Sudden Charge, preferably to get into flank with Ithuriel assuming it is no longer 10' away from him. Keep in mind the extra -2 to its AC if I can get into a flank.

Who Dis |

"You have saved me!" (Critical Success)
Hoisted onto the dock, Demed skedaddles to the other side of the paladin, and opens his mouth:
"I must say - though your friend tried to bully me earlier, I do feel bad that he is in that crab's clutches - that looks like it hurts!"
Demed's attitude shifted two steps positively; he is now "Helpful"
Hero Point for Dinardin!

Mandoo - if he survives - is Up!
Gosh, thanks! There's nothing Mandoo likes more than a nice back massage in the middle of combat.
As the crab's claws squeeze together and threaten to cut Mandoo in half, the monk uses all his strength to fight the steadily increasing pressure.
Basic Fortitude Save (1) vs DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Yikes! A crit fail for double damage; that's game over for Mandoo. He goes to Dying 2, then the next two constricts take him to Dying 4. Thank goodness Masei was kind enough to provide him a second Hero Point; a Hero Point that he will use right now...
Basic Fortitude Save (1) vs DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
OK, that's better. Mandoo only took 3hp from the first constrict. Now at 9hp.
The monk groans in agony as the claw bites into him. He almost passes out from the pain, but a final desperate plea to Desna for help is miraculously answered, and his fishing pole slips into the closing claw joint relieving the pressure momentarily.
Basic Fortitude Save (2) vs DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
The dice gods are being fickle today. No damage from that one.
Against all odds, the fishing pole continues to jam the crab's claw joint and the respite continues.
Basic Fortitude Save (3) vs DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Ugh! Takes the full 4hp on that one. Now at 5hp.
The pole finally gives way and the inexorable crushing begins anew. "Argh!"
Mandoo then struggles valiantly against the crushing claw to get himself free.
Action 1 (◆): Escape
Athletics (Escape): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
But to no avail. Mandoo is stuck fast in the crushing claw of the crab.
Seeing no other option, Mandoo reaches into his jacket and pulls out a minor healing potion...
